Maccheroni Republic - Life is full of pasta-bilities! So if you know anything about me, you know that I love pasta more than just about anything. While I can only officially claim about 12% Italian heritage, I'm 100% down for Italian food, especially homemade pasta, any day of the week. I'm spending this week in Little Tokyo for a conference, and while Japanese food is also absolutely my jam, when Maccheroni Republic slid into my Yelp feed, I knew that I had to hoof it over there immediately after we broke for the day. I saw the front of the building, and my heart sank because it looked closed, but then I noted the sign that indicated that the entrance is on the right side of the building through the courtyard. Thank goodness! I strutted through the courtyard, and observed about 15 people waiting for tables. Unbothered, I went up to the host stand and chatted with the stylish maitre'd - Dino - who indicated that he could have a table for me in 7-10 minutes. I proceeded to wait and I watched how he deftly sat the other waiting parties in order without difficulty or notes. To the untrained eye, it might have looked a little chaotic, but Dino absolutely knew what he was doing. About 15 minutes later, Dino sat me at a corner deuce in the inside dining room where I had a nice view of everything. Angel efficiently took my order and did a very good job of overseeing my table as well as about nine others. The dining room is so cute and homey, and the patio is a welcome respite from the bustle and business of downtown. Since I was "da sola" or on my own, I just tried the shrimp cakes and I ordered the Rigatoni all Norma which is one of of my go to pasta dishes since I don't eat much meat. Incidentally, this dish is named after Norma, the famous 19th-century opera composed by Catanese native Vincenzo Bellini. According to legend, a famous Sicilian playwright, Nino Martoglio, tried the pasta and was so overwhelmed by its perfection that he exclaimed, "Chista è 'na vera Norma!" ("This is a true Norma!"), comparing the culinary masterpiece to the musical one. So says Wikipedia anyway. The shrimp cakes were delivered quickly by a sweet food runner who kindly checked on me periodically during my dinner. The four shrimp cakes were accompanied by sauteed onions which paired really nicely with the crispy cakes that were brightened with a spritz from the fresh lemon wedge. She also brought a basket with four slices of Italian bread which I enjoyed with the EVOO and Balsamic that were on the table. My Watermelon Ciao was also so good. It was sweetly tart and such a nice treat on a Monday! Not long after I polished off the shrimp cakes, the rigatoni was delivered and dusted with a generous layer of parmigiana. The little fresh mozzarella pearls glistened on the top of the pasta and slowly melted and oozed into the sauce as I stirred it up. Yum! The rigatoni were al dente and delicious, and they were perfectly sauced. Of course, the eggplant was perfectly cooked as well, I only wish there had been a few more pieces of it - although by the time I ate the last noodle, I was so full! Alas, I had no room for dessert, but I intend to bring some of my conference colleagues back for a meal before the end of the week because it was THAT GOOD. I also loved that this place is NOT pretentious at all. There were all sorts of folks enjoying their food here from medical professionals in scrubs to college kids in shorts and t-shirts, and I was also very casually attired, but I was treated well and welcomed with graciousness and delicious food! First time at this restaurant. The staff was really welcoming and attentive which really makes a difference when stopping to enjoy good company and food in downtown. We went fairly early in the afternoon , to enjoy Lunch while visiting my aunt. They brought out fresh bread and it was really good, the balsamic vinegar had an amazing flavor . Forgot to snap photos of the appetizers , it's was Brushetta and The bone marrow, both were excellent Every dish came out and was sooo good , a nice portion and every dish was very well balanced and exceeded our expectations. The shrimp tasted very fresh and was perfectly plump and not overcooked. The Ragu with wild board was excellent and ragu was rich and hearty. Lasagna was very rich and decadent and we enjoyed every bite. Gnocchi con carne was delicious as well For dessert we had affogato , espresso was very rich and velvety , with the perfect sweetness. Flourless chocolate cake was amazing . Ambiance - although this place has lots of seating, it has a cozy, neighborhood vibe. Service - excellent. From the friendly greeter/hostess to the Italian sommelier who checked in on us and joked with us often, they really made us feel we've been customers for a long time. This is only our second time here. Our friends' last time of eating her was over 10 years ago. This is simply because we all live far from this resto. The cute patio seating area offers a wonderfully relaxed vibe away from the city hustle. LOVE LOVE LOVE Maccheroni Republic!!! I've been going to this place since 5 years ago and it's still one of my absolute favorite places in LA. So worth going to downtown for. The service is impeccable and very friendly to you. They're really knowledgeable about their dishes too. The place just reeks of experience and professionalism. And I can't even start with the dishes. From the vongole down to the tiramisu, everything is delectable and perfect. The only downside is they raised their prices over the years I loved it when I used to get pasta for less than 20 bucks a few years ago. And the wait tends to be terrible so I would try to go earlier (opening) next time or just hop to a bar nearby while on the waitlist. Plenty of reviews already but adding my two cents. Stopped in for bite after visiting the Bradbury Building (bucket list ). Started with the Burratina and Insulata Arugula. Both were good but enjoyed the Burratina more. Then we shared a plate of Cacio Pollo Pappardelle. Yum! Creamy rich with perfectly cooked pasta. We finished with a battle of the desserts: flan vs flourless cake. The cake was light and slightly bitter in a good way but the clear winner was the flan. The texture and flavor were fantastic. Delicious pasta and a slight Italian piazza vibe makes for a great experience. We were seated outdoor on the covered patio with heaters and greenery separating us from the public. The wait staff was attentive and well-mannered. My table ordered drinks that all looked great! The menu was extensive and the online QR code was super helpful with photos of the dishes. The table came with fresh bread and olive oil and balsamic for dipping. I ordered the special truffle gnocchi and it was so flavorful and rich. Located directly across from the bustling Grand Central Market, this spot remains a beacon for those who want high-quality, handmade pasta without the stuffy white-tablecloth pretense. I recently returned here for a work celebration lunch with my team after several years away. In a city where restaurants often lose their soul (or their flavor) after a few years, I was thrilled to find that everything was exactly as delicious as I remembered. Parking: There is metered street parking or you can save yourself the circling and just pull into one of the nearby paid lots. Check in/ Resy: this restaurant, unfortunately, does not do reservations which I highly recommend implementing one. If there is one area for improvement, it's the arrival experience. The check-in process was a bit chaotic, with several groups hovering around the entrance in a disorganized fashion. A formal sign-in sheet or a digital waitlist system would go a long way in managing the crowds. Food: Appetizers: We ordered a spread for the table, and every single one was scrumptious. They are light enough to whet the appetite but flavorful enough to stand on their own. The Seafood Pasta: My personal choice and a total knockout. The seafood was fresh, and the pasta had that perfect, firm bite that only comes from handmade dough. After a mediocre first visit years ago, I came back with an open mind for an 11-person birthday party at 2:30 PM on a Sunday. Because they do not take reservations, the zero-wait seating was only possible because the restaurant was pretty empty at this off-peak hour. I would absolutely never wait an hour in line for this place, but the timing worked out perfectly for us today. The staff was definitely much more attentive this time around, though that may simply be because the dining room was mostly empty. On a positive note, they finally fixed a major pet peeve of mine: for a restaurant making fresh pasta, serving pre-grated cheese out of a jar was a terrible look. Today, they actually had a server spooning the cheese onto our plates as desired, which is a massive upgrade over the old shakers. Our waiter Ivan and his crew were incredibly nice throughout the meal. The food itself was a mix of highs and lows. The bone marrow appetizer was a massive hit, and most guests really enjoyed their pasta dishes, though one person felt the sauce didn't live up to the pasta itself. I ordered the fennel herb salad with grilled Norwegian salmon. The salmon was tiny--likely only two ounces for $21--but it did have a beautifully executed crust and great flavor. The fennel salad, however, was horrible and completely all over the place; I couldn't even tell if I was eating fennel or citrus, and I will definitely choose something else next time. For dessert, Luisa's olive oil cake completely lacked sweetness and flavor, but the chocolate fudge cake was excellent. The real standout was the Tiramisu, which easily ranks as one of the best I have ever had. The major downsides come down to bad execution and rising costs. They only serve Americanos instead of drip coffee, but they made ours with room-temperature water instead of boiling water. Once cream was added, we were left drinking entirely cold coffee. Furthermore, their corkage fee has skyrocketed from $10 to $30, which felt excessive since I had to open the bottle and pour it myself. Parking is another financial headache. Finding street parking in downtown is impossible, so you have to use the adjacent lot. It costs $22, and even with the restaurant's $6 validation, you are still out $16. While they are designated as a Michelin Bib Gourmand--one of only about 65 in Southern California--don't confuse this with a star rating. It simply means good quality food at an excellent value. Between the cold coffee, the tiny salmon portion, the $30 corkage fee, and the $16 parking, this restaurant is simply no longer a good value. However, the experience was still a step up from my last visit. Very popular place, especially on weekends. They don't take reservations. Our party of 5 had about an hour wait and they only seat complete parties. The front desk attendant was nice and the server was friendly and attentive. It's a cozy ambiance that has a nice patio. Theres a parking structure directly behind the restaurant which makes the parking cost $16 with validation instead of $22. The food was delicious. The homemade pasta is very fresh. We shared the meatballs appetizer for the table which were awesome and flavorful. I had the Pappardelle Al Cinghiale which was good, but I thought it would have more tomato sauce. I recently visited this beautiful, cozy restaurant with a group of six and we had such a genuinely pleasant experience from start to finish. The food was delicious and arrived in a very timely manner, piping hot and thoughtfully presented. We were offered bread, water, and Parmesan cheese to complement our meals, which immediately set the tone for attentive service. I came here years ago and remember ordering something that I liked but did not love and always wanted to come back to try what I was eyeing the last time. Thankfully, someone on my team retired and I had the opportunity 6 years later to come back. I ordered the Bianchi & Neri and it was delicious. I can't describe how much I loved it. It has everything I love in a pasta - shrimp and creamy :). I am so happy that I came back and had the opportunity to have it. For appetizers, we had the calamari and the meatballs and the bruschetta. The bruschetta was super fresh and good and the calamari was yummy. I was starving so I didn't get an opportunity to take pictures. We came at about 11:30am on a Thursday so even with a table of 8, we were able to basically walk in with only a 5 minute wait. My wife and I had a wonderful time celebrating 8 years together! Parking anywhere in DTLA can feel somewhat sketch at night time, but once we were inside, it felt warm, cozy, and intimate. We came on a Friday night around 6pm and were lucky enough to be seated upon arrival since they do not take reservations. We started with the garlic bread which was buttery/soft like a cloud and loaded with garlicky goodness in every bite. She got the Blanchi & Neri while I got the Trifogli Del Fattore. The creamy sauce balanced the saltiness from the pancetta and stuck to the black/white noodles well. We loved the tomato sauce because it was thick, savory, and insanely addicting. On the table there is a bottle of chili oil which was honestly a cheat code. It had just the right amount of heat and added a nice flavor that elevated everything. I asked if I could buy some, but unfortuantely it was not for sale. All of the food is sooo delicious and it was such a treat to have fresh hand-made pasta. It makes such a noticeable difference in texture and taste that is unforgettable. The staff was so welcoming and attentive always making us feel at home. Maccheroni Republic offers fresh hand-made pasta. We had the following three pasta dishes: 1. Agnolotti di osso bucco: tortellini filled with osso bucco meat, and bone marrow in a salsa verde de spinach. With this dish, I could taste the spinach (which I loved), and the bone marrow provided a richness to the pasta that was very pleasant and not overpowering. 2. Ravioli di Zucca - pumpkin and sweet potato with butter cream truffle cheese sauce - delicious! 3. Rigatoni pom'amore: creamy tomato sauce, basil, burrata It tasted fresh and flavorful. No meat though. I also enjoyed their house-made chili oil. I drizzled that on my pasta, and dip my bread in it. It was perfect. Their house ice tea was also very good: rich with tea flavor. I look forward to coming back to try their other dishes. For mains, I got the gnocchi and my partner got the frutti di mare pasta The flavors were honestly so good. Rich, well-balanced, and just satisfying. I have to say -- the seafood pasta was loaded. If you have eaten around LA, you know how rare that is They were not holding back at all, especially for the price. As for the gnocchi, it was more on the softer side rather than super chewy, but it worked really well with the mushroom ragu. We started with the free bread, which felt a little dry and flavorless, but paired with the olive oil it was a nice touch. My, oh my, what a fantastic restaurant! My husband and I were in DTLA recently, and we wanted to grab a nice lunch in the area. I had heard about Maccheroni Republic, and how it's an authentic Italian osteria that serves organic, homemade pasta (and it also has a Michelin mention), so we decided to give it a try. Wow! The pasta was absolutely incredible! We shared two dishes -- the Pom'Amore (rigatoni, creamy tomato, burrata, and basil) and the Bianchi & Neri (black & white vermicelli, shrimp, pancetta, mushrooms, and cream). Just delicious! I also suggest the homemade tiramisu for dessert. Divine! And if you get a chance, dine outside on the patio. It's surrounded by trees, flowers, and plants, and it's like a little oasis in DTLA. I've been here twice so far and I've had the cacio pollo papperdelle and bianchi and niri (forgive me if the spelling is off). The cacio pollo papperdelle was pretty good (esp since I added mushrooms to my order) but I do wish it wasn't so salty. Perhaps I added too much parmesan cheese when they asked but overall, the pasta was a bit too salty for my liking. The bianchi and niri on the other hand was a favorite amongst our table and I really liked it! The perfect balance of flavors. The price is pretty steep but given that this is in DTLA, I can't really complain. The atmosphere is perfect for a small gathering (the restaurant itself is pretty small but there is outside seating!) or an nice date night. This place is located across from the Grand Central Market which is perfect if you want to get dessert. Service was quick and the waiter was super kind. Parking may be a headache in this area but I've always walked from work so I don't have to worry about it. read more

This is the second time I've been to this restaurant and it does not disappoint. Went here for lunch to celebrate a co-worker. This really is a restaurant you would have a nice date or wanted to treat someone rather than going across the street to Grand Central Market. The staff are attentive and friendly and provide their personal favorites. Our waiter recommended the Rigatoni Pon-Armoire and I devoured it all. The food was fresh and delicious. A coworker ordered cannolis for dessert which came with three. I never had a cannoli before but I had one and it was good. It was cold and sweet. They do provide the table with bread.
