Brunch here was SOOOOOO good!!! There was a 2 hour wait for Sunday brunch at Plum Bistro nearby so we went here instead. I got the Up on Mars Platter ($13.5) - every component was awesome and it was so beautifully presented. Highlights are definitely the mile high SUPER flakey biscuit, the creamy egg and the country gravy. That blackberry jam seriously tasted homemade too! I haven't been here yet, but I wear my Life on mars shirt around San Diego and get complements from time-to-time. Just the fact that this place is part of the lives of some cool people that I respect makes it worthwhile to support to me. Next time I'm back in Seattle I'm visiting for sure to get my drink on and listen to some great music, hopefully with some great people, like Seattle used to have. I'm not vegan but if I have to be to eat there, I'm down. What's not to like when there's records, food and drink in the same place! Is life on Mars really that much better than here on Earth? Depending on our rate of meat consumption, it might just be lol. But I'm not here to tell you that, and instead say that this trendy bar serving up vegan comfort foods is a great spot to take anyone for a good time. I joke around that I rarely have to wait to be seated at vegan restaurants but Life on Mars nearly changed that stance. Any restaurant in Capitol Hill is bound to be busy, so we almost had to wait on a Friday evening. Fortunately they had an outdoor table available so bam - in your face queue. Food wise - they offer a large selection of comfort foods that anyone will find familiar. From burgers and sammies to classic American sides, this can be a good spot for anyone looking to transition to plant based eating but needs a bit of help. I ordered their Crab Cake Po Boys with their quinoa salad as a side, while my partner went with their Spicy Chicken Sandwich and fries. We also shared their Mac N Cheese cause you gotta try this at any vegan spot to see how they do. My crab cakes were okay - crispy batter with what I believe to be seitan in the middle. The quinoa salad was not good so I wish I had gone for the fries instead. The chicken sandwich here was also decent - spicy seasoning was on point and it resembled more of a 'filet o fish' type of sandwich. I also thought the mac could've had more flavor but it may have just been the kind of vegan cheese they used. Overall, a pretty decent spot for vegan eats in the area but I find there are better plant-based restaurants elsewhere in Seattle that you can check out. Come for the drinks and vibes and maybe some apps, but grab a heartier plant-based meal elsewhere. read more

My friends and I wanted to enjoy a vegan meal out and we heard that Life on Mars was a great place to try it out! We came on a Saturday around 10AM for brunch and were able to get seated right away. My friends and I ordered 3 dishes and split all of them. We ordered the Comfort Plater, Triple Threat, and Chick 'N Waffles. Comfort Platter: the fried chickpea cutlet had an insane texture, but the overall taste and seasoning were lacking flavor. The eggs were also under seasoned but the color was great for the imitation. The potatoes were well cooked and seasoned! Triple Threat: the menu states that it's supposed to come with 3 sausages instead of 2 but when we asked they said it comes with 2. The pancakes were a bit dry but had decent texture and flavor otherwise! The sausages have a very shocking taste with them being spicy yet sweet. Chick 'N Waffes: this was by far my favorite dish. The fried cauliflower was quite tasty! And the waffle was a bit dry but definitely added to the dish. And the sauce drizzle tied the whole dish together. The waiters were super friendly constantly walking by to see how we were doing. Overall, these vegan dishes didn't wow me, but was definitely a great experience and would definitely want to come again for lunch or dinner! read more

We tried Life on Mars today, and based on the reviews, I came in with decent expectations--but sadly, it was a big letdown. I ordered the mezcal margarita, which tasted more like mezcal with lime than an actual cocktail--definitely not balanced, and not enjoyable. The fish and chips were just okay, but the fries were clearly old and reheated, likely in a microwave. The nachos were honestly the worst part--soggy, bland, and totally disappointing. I am constantly impressed by Life on Mars. The drinks are better balanced and more thoughtful and exciting than other bars in the city. I grew up on a meat and potatoes diet and don't have any issue finding a delicious meal from they vegan/veggie menu. I am also a huge audiophile and love that you can select records from their library for them to play live. This sets you up for whatever mood or feel you might need on any given day. Recommended to me by a friend, Mars was an amazing place; cozy and intimate without feeling crowded. Had a 21st birthday drink here and loved it. Ordered the Pink Opaque, which tasted light and refreshing and perfectly balanced. Atmosphere was impeccable. This is one of my new favorite brunch spots! Vegan or not, the food here is incredible and the drinks are even better! Plus, I like that they include the abv next to each drink. I ordered the "chicken fried steak" made with chickpeas and I cleared the plate... it was so amazing without being heavy or feeling like I need a nap. There is not parking here, as with most places in caphill, but I found street parking no problem! They also have a "you pick the record" thing going on weekdays after 4, and all day Sunday. You get to pick what's playing from a massive collection of records, and I think that's really fun. They do not take reservations, but our group of 5 had no issues getting a table. Good creative cocktails, good vegan food. One of the best ones I feel, as most of the time restaurants miss the fake meat recipes. The breakfast-YUMMY!! But it is expensive. This is a place I often go to chill with my friends but it is getting more and more expensive to buy these fancy cocktails. Even standard drinks like old fashioned or Martini are expensive. Service is good too. No fuss. They know when to not interrupt our conversation. But I have reduced my visits here. BTW the fries suck. Ambiance is a 10/10 from me. When you walk in to the left is a huge comfy cozy sitting area with an entire wall of records. It feels like a cozy living room from a posh home. The booths are all this very fancy looking mustard color with big buttons. I went in and immediately felt comfortable which is huge for me. The staff is beyond nice and very helpful. The man checking IDs at the front door chatted with us and even talked to us about the book he was currently reading. My sister and I are huge readers so it was nice to hear somebody talk about a book they liked. The servers were very attentive and helpful with the menu. They helped guide our food and drink selection. The Sri k was very good however a little strong for my taste. I am very much on the more sugary not taste my alcohol preference. But their vodka was infused with green tea and I did enjoy the overall flavor a lot. THE NACHOS They are VEGAN! They are so fancy. They looked like the most fancy plated vegan nachos I've ever had. There were many different fake cheeses and other ingredients. They tasted super fresh and I loved the nachos. This place is so cute and fun! I would have given higher reviews if it weren't for our host who was totally on another planet the entire time (probably up in mars, lol). We decided to wait on a table since none were available and he wrote our name down and we waited outside. Then, he walked outside and asked us if we were just hanging out on the tables outside and forgot about us when others started coming! It was fine since there were many tables enough to seat all of the groups, but it was weird. The food was ok. The cauliflower was so oily, when we finished there was a whole lake on our plate that spilled all over our table when the waiter moved it. Our saving graces were the nachos (so yum) and our wonderful wonderful server. The ambiance from our server completely lightened up our mood! I would come here for happy hour... and that's it haha! This place is the definition of a hipster spot in Seattle. Right on the Pike Pine corridor and the heart of Capitol Hill, this record bar serves up pretty good vegan/plant based food. I liked everything I go including the cauliflower, tacos and mac and cheese and was pleasantly spruced. There is usually a wait to sit but it's never taken too long to be seated. The staff was great and super organized and their cocktails, while spendy, were great. Parking here is a bit of a nightmare but it's right off Broadway so lots of public transit in walking distance. read more

So it's really hard to find a solid vegan breakfast, even in Capitol Hill. But the brunch at Life on Mars is hands down the place to go for some plant-based breakfast fare! The vibe of this bar is retro and fun. The bathrooms are a trip (go into the further of the two bathrooms! You won't regret it). The staff is friendly and efficient. And the food is bomb. The only thing I haven't loved there is the drinks. The Daoist, though clearly the cutest drink (yes please pandas) was undrinkable for me. That won't keep me away though because they have plenty of other interesting drinks to try! Each time I've gone to Life on Mars I've taken meat eaters with me. We ordered the nachos with chorizo, the chicken sandwich with fries, crab cake po boy with fries, side of aoli, and the orange tres leches. The nachos were pretty standard. The chorizo wasn't super flavorful but the cheese sauce was good. I wish there would have been more jalapenos. My partner described the nachos as "60% lettuce by volume". The blue cheese chicken sandwich was very mushy. The bun was mushy and so was the chicken. Neither of us could taste the blue cheese. The aoli was tasty and the fries had a nice crisp to them. The po boy was also really mushy and structurally unpleasant to eat. The flavor was fine but not very strong. I couldn't really tell what was going on. The fries were good. The tres leches was very flavorful but a little dry. It was our favorite part of the meal. However, the berries they used for decoration were frozen solid. read more

The service and ambiance here are amazing. My husband and I are vegan and have been here twice for brunch and the food both times was delicious. We decided to take our family from out of town here (not vegan) for dinner. I, as well as my cousin, were intrigued by the fish and chips since they said house made. We asked the waitress (super sweet) what they were made out of and she said banana blossom and I was stoked! I had never tried banana blossom and was eager to try since this place has amazing food. Alas the food came and it was gardein fish. No complaints! I love gardein and eat their "fish" at least once a week. But I was super bummed no banana blossom and kinda bummed we weren't told ahead of time the fish wasn't what was advertised. We'll def be back but just not to order the fish n chips. First, greeted by friendly staff, then there is their great drink menu (we ordered the Friendship Bracelet that came in a panda bear glass). We came on a Friday around 6-ish and only had to wait a few minutes for our table to be set up. It was definitely busy though. I respect that they check IDs/vaccinations. We ordered the blooming onion (around 12$) and a few drinks. The atmosphere reminded me of those cool speakeasies with the low lighting and seemingly high walls. It's a pretty small place but felt like lots of conversations. I admired the wall of vinyls that they had displayed. The blooming onion came out pretty fast but I wouldn't call it a blooming onion as it was just like half of an onion. I'll stick to the state fair next time. The drinks were good and strong (I can't remember the name but I did like the names of the drinks) and the service was good. Great place to get started before walking along Pike/Pine. read more

Let me preface with the fact that I am not vegan, however this is one of my favorite breakfast spots. The audiophile in me brought me, the food kept me. I love how Life on Mars alternates between two customer picked vinyls throughout the dining experience and even has for sale (I bought my "In Utero" here). I've been here several times at different times of the day, but brunch is my favorite. I've had the Comfort Platter a couple of times, because I'm a creature of habit and once I like something I always go to it. The breakfast potatoes are amazing, I really loved the chickpea cutlet and mushroom gravy, I was impressed by the vegan biscuit (the texture was spot on), and I can never hate on fresh fruit. I've also had the house made Bloody Mary, I love a good Bloody Mary and let me tell you this one is spicer than normal just the way I like it. They have an extensive bottle collection, and I saw quite a few local distilleries from around the PNW (even tried a maraschino liqueur from Oregon!). Perfect suggestions of both drink and food selections for our tastes and preferences. We loved every mouthful. All 4 of us were delighted with the delicious items we were served.
