True Classic New England Diner. Went here specifically for the fish and grits and it did not disappoint!! Limited parking, friendly staff and patrons. It's has a very basic setup inside, bar and tables. I would come back for the grits!!!

When we walked in, our initial impression was that it was a bar. But the name on their sign clearly states "Liberty Diner" which we decided to take at face value. Come in and take a seat. There's a number of tables for 6 along the wall facing the street, while a bar/counter lines the inner wall. Service is friendly enough, but quite casual. Their menu is listed on the boards posted up on the wall. One for lunch, one for breakfast, and a smaller whiteboard which listed a number of seafood dishes on our visit. We ended up sharing the pancakes with one side $7.50 (corned beef hash please), and chicken fingers with french fries $7.50. I wasn't sure if the pacing of the dishes were more due to the fact that we had ordered the first a couple of minutes ahead of the second, or if the chicken fingers just take longer to make than the pancakes. But we were sharing, so what evs. Their pancakes were fluffy and arrived as a stack of three, with butter on each. Their syrup arrived in an Aunt Jemima type bottle, but without a label. The hash were made up with more tiny diced potatoes than bits of corned beef, but it was tasty, not overly salty nor oily. The chicken fingers were white meat with a soft crisp coating. They counted 4 and sat on top of a pile of thin cut soft crisp fries. Notice a theme? Yes, me too. They did have the honey mustard I asked for, which was appreciated, while my DC preferred the old classic - Heinz Ketchup. Limited private parking available, but if you read the signs you can probably find parking on the street as well. Credit cards accepted ($5 or more please).

PATTY MELT REVIEW…read more Iconic diner on the edge of Chinatown, a couple blocks east of the Expressway. It's been around for decades and it's open 24/7. More of an authentic this-place-has-aged feel than the typical diner attempt to evoke an earlier era. Went in the morning and went for a patty melt-- because I could. It's too elusive these days, so being able to not only find one but have it at breakfast, a double win. Double patty is standard, not an add-on, and fries (probably frozen, but lengthy, crisp and fluffy) are included. No onions, no rye, but lettuce and tomato-- a non-traditional configuration. Nicely browned patties that had juiciness. The ingredients weren't anything to write home about, but the execution was great all around and so was the cheerful service from a seasoned veteran. Sure, I've had better with the proper rye, griddled onions, and higher quality beef, but an easy 4 stars for the execution, value, vibe, and being able to even order a patty melt before 10 in the morning. Bonus points for a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that was slightly warm. Breakfast items (eggs, crispy home fries, and pancakes) on a neighboring table looked good.

The parking garage around the corner is a huge win for the area, even though they can't validate. We came back specifically for the Butternut Squash Agnolotti we raved about the last time, so I was disappointed to see it's been pulled from the menu. The vegetarian options felt pretty slim this time around. I wasn't interested in a basic spaghetti pomodoro, so we pivoted to small plates and drinks. The Squash Blossoms were stuffed with truffled burrata and drizzled with lavender honey, and the pine nut dukkah gives them a great crunch. My daughter enjoyed the Tuna Tartare, which came with tallow chips. The highlight of the night has to be the cocktails. The G.T.S. had a nice chai-spiced kick to it, and the Punch! is a fun, tropical choice if you like rum and orgeat. Since it was a birthday celebration, we finished with the passionfruit cheesecake. The presentation was nice, but compared to the London Fog cheesecake they used to have, it didn't have the same "wow" factor. Also, I wish they had brought it out with a candle. The service was perfectly fine and the atmosphere is still nice, but the food didn't feel like the flavorful comfort food that I remembered. I really miss the old menu! It's still a polished spot for a drink, but I'm hoping they bring back the Butternut Squash Agnolotti!

However, the guys who make the sandwiches are friendly, obviously hard working, and more helpful. On one visit, one of them verbally took my order to get it started and then one of the ladies eventually came over and put it in the register later. The sandwiches are at least as good as Pot Belly and are better than Jimmy John's in terms of quantity and quality. On one visit I tried their Chicken Marsala. It liked like it was a frozen meal they microwaved, but it was pretty good, especially for a train station food court sandwich shop. Since food in the airport sux in Boston, I'd definitely recommend getting a sandwich here and take with to the airport for ur trip. Will definitely put up with the service to get the food here again when in town. Tip: There is a CVS nearby in the food court/station, getting drinks and chips from there rather than the Melting Sun is a better deal.
