I stopped into Levain again tonight to curb a late-night craving for a sweet treat: today, I chose the Chocolate Chip Brioche ($5), which is rich, decadent brioche roll smothered with a good coating of chocolate chips inside, and a dusting of sugar on top. Service was friendly as always, and I didn't feel rushed at all (though the atmosphere was quite buzzy), despite there being around a five-minute line at 9pm on a Saturday, and they were even willing to warm it up for me! The roll itself was...perhaps even better than their cookies? I know that's going to spark outrage and controversy, but the actual bread is soft and pillowy, with a crunchy-but-not-stale exterior, and it isn't too sweet: the semisweet chocolate chips inside provide all of the necessary sweetness and richness that the baked good needs. Yes, it's a bit denser than your standard brioche, but it's truly an amazing dessert (or perhaps a fun breakfast pastry if you're craving something sweet) that's generously portioned! It's the same price as their cookies, and $5 is a pretty steep price to pay for what's essentially a bread roll with chocolate chips, but I truly don't think that this is something that I could make at home - there's a unique craftsmanship to the dough that I couldn't achieve. And unlike their cookies, I didn't feel a bit sick after eating the whole thing, which is nice - I just felt pleasantly full. Overall, I think that their chocolate chip brioche is truly one of the best items that Levain sells, and I'd definitely come back to get it again! read more

I tried walking past this place, but the hubby wasn't having it, so I agreed to share a cookie with him. These cookies were swollen!! Looked like muffins. We decided to try the limited edition Rocky Road cookie...let me tell you...DELICIOUS!!! And it was hot and the marshmallow had just the right roasted crunch on it... Honestly after sharing that cookie with him I could have hotten my own, but I didn't that doesn't mean I'm not going again before I leave. I don't feel guilty since we walked 1.1 miles! read more

Still kicking out quality baked goods here, the first Levain location to open in the DMV. I think of it as their flagship bakery. I'm quite fond of the plain brioche, it's consistently yummy and singled-sized (love that). Their original cookie (chocolate chip walnut) is a winner too. Oh thank god for these cookies. They are outrageous delicious. Thick in the middle but with a slight crisp at the ends, and so full of fresh flavor you will swear you are in heaven. I have always been more of an agnostic, but these cookies have convinced me that there is a benevolent force in the universe smiling upon us. I doordashed myself some cookies because of all the hype around Levain, and I sad to say....I'm a little disappointed. It's not bad, but not worth the price tag. My favorite cookie ever is CCC and the Levain one did not live up to the hype. It just tasted like sugar. It didn't have the aromatic of the butter, chocolate chip, or anything. Just. Straight. My friend had heard good things about this place so we decided to check it out on a Saturday evening. There was a line extending outside but we were able to get to the ordering counter in about 15 minutes. The staff were very friendly in taking our orders. I got the chocolate chip walnut ($6.25, vegan), and she got the lemon and chocolate. The vegan one was deliciously divine, soft yet crumbly, with melting chocolate. I had the double chocolate chip cookie and it was very decadent. It wasn't very sweet, which is different for me. I'm assuming they use a semi sweet chocolate instead of a milk chocolate in the cookies. The cookie was very large too, I was able to share it with my daughter, it is not something that I could just eat in one sitting and definitely not by myself. I was there on a Saturday, the line was long, but it moved pretty fast. The store was very clean. They also offer coffee but it is not a lot of coffee beverages to chose from. Decided to stop by Levain on a Sunday night for a late night treat. I have frequented Levain multiple times and this visit, I decided to order an Oatmeal and Raisin cookie and a Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip. The cookies are rather expensive but they are also big - so big you might end up feeling full after eating only one. The Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip is probably 10% caramel, 40% chocolate chip, and 50% cookie with coconut mixed in. It was really delicious, but I wish there could've been a more even ratio of caramel to chocolate. As for the Oatmeal and Raisin, it was also really good and people who are into a more chewy, no-chocolate cookie would really be into it. Unless the cookies are fresh out of the oven, my advice is to warm them up a bit before you eat them! You'll have good mix of a crispy outside and gooey and soft inside. Service was very quick. Does the perfect cookie exist?! YES and it is at Levain! I am a chocolate chip cookie addict; it is my all time favorite baked good so when I heard about Levain, I knew I had to stop by. We went on a cold Sunday afternoon and there was literally no line at all. We asked what their most popular cookie was and they said it was the chocolate chip walnut. So that's what we went with. This cookie had the perfect consistency, not too soft or hard and certainly not overly sweet. The walnuts gave it the perfect bite and texture! I will note that right around the time we were leaving, the line was getting pretty long. So beware that you may have to stand in line for a while depending on when you go. We were just full that day so we had to pick just one cookie for the sake of just trying it while we were already in the Georgetown area. Each cookie is 6ounces, the size of your palm. The cookie is gooey and soft. The outer has a mild crunch. Each bite was filled with melted chocolate chip and other toppings. I have tried replicating this recipe at home but could never get the perfect combination of cookie & cake. Levain, what is your secret?? People have been complaining about the price since each cookie cost $5. However, the Haagen Daez across the street serves ice cream for ~$5 a scoop. I ordered a tin from California to be delivered Tuesday, paid online and within 1 minute realized that the delivery was scheduled for now, like right away. This place has been hyped up ever since it opened in Georgetown but never had a chance to try it until now. Had to wait in line for maybe 10 minutes; there's always a line here! And no indoor seating although there are some outdoor seats. I got the two chip chocolate chip cookie and it was basically $5. To be honest, after eating it, I don't really know why this place is hyped up... aesthetics or the fact it's a big cookie? I felt like it was just meh... it's better than the cookies you buy at the grocery store but it's not worth $5 for a cookie I'd say. Cookies are my favourite dessert but I also can't tolerate anything too sweet or else I'll feel sick so probably another reason why I didn't enjoy it as much. The only thing that resembles a cookie to me is the crisp bottom of the cookie, the rest of it is really soft and overfilled with chocolate which is way too much chocolate for me - couldn't finish it because too much chocolate and too much sugar. It reminds me of a Mrs. Field cookie that got a whole bunch of melted chocolate injected into it, making the dough very gooey and sticky! I like the crispy dough part of cookies and there wasn't really much of that - every bite I had, there was just a ton of chocolate! I feel like the thick dough was there, but no distinct taste to it like a buttery taste or something. Did I just pick the wrong cookie flavour for me? Probably LOL. I would try another flavour to see if they're better for my taste buds, but $5 for a cookie that resembles a hardened muffin top with huge chocolate chips isn't my thing. But I liked taking pictures of it for my Instagram. The blue packaging is pretty. Probably wouldn't recommend for someone who can't tolerate super sweet desserts or cookie lovers who enjoy crunchy cookies over soft ones. But I can see why others like it, although $5 for a cookie and waiting in a line is something I'd keep in mind. The place has napkins and water cups if needed. Also, there's several cashiers to serve multiple people in line so that's useful. Probably would recommend going on a weekday because the lines here on the weekend can be a little intense or you'll see people giving up in the line... but it's not as bad as Georgetown cupcake that's for sure. read more

I've been to a number of the NYC locations, they are all great. This location in Georgetown, also great! Nice service at the counter, awesome selection of cookies. We grabbed chocolate chip with walnut, chocolate chip without walnut, chocolate chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter chip, and oatmeal raisin. Saved them for dessert that night. This review is from early June 2024. We were visiting Georgetown and I wanted to treat myself to something sweet. Levain Bakery had an advertisement outside their store which caught my attention that evening. It highlighted a limited edition lemon cookie. We ordered the lemon cookie ($5.75) plus a chocolate chip cookie ($5.25). Both were really big. I wouldn't normally order a $5.25 cookie, and this time two cookies, but I really wanted to try them, and being on vacation, I indulged. The lemon cookie was so tasty. A bit crispy on the outside and so yummy and soft on the inside. I believe it had lemon chips in it. To make it even yummier, fortunately for us, the lemon cookie was still a bit warm from coming out of the oven recently. I liked this cookie so much that I went back to the bakery a couple days later in the morning and ordered this same lemon cookie. This 2nd time it wasn't fresh out of the oven so not warm. It was still good, but not as good as the other evening when it was still warm. The chocolate chip cookie was also good, but not as tasty as the lemon cookie. It's too bad Levain Bakery isn't in my area because if it was, I'd actually indulge in their lemon cookie once in a while. It really should be part of their every day menu, not just a limited edition, because I'd order it all the time. read more

Big cookies that clearly use good ingredients. The chocolate chunks and walnuts tasted great! But the cookie felt a little under baked. The best bites were the crispy parts on the edges that had a nice caramel flavor. Otherwise, it was a good texture but a little raw tasting.
