I love this spot! It's cozy with minimal seating. It's quite popular so there's usually a line. However it is always worth it. My cookie was toasty to perfection-- the chocolate just oozes in your mouth! My only qualm was that someone sat and brought their 4 dogs, this is out of Levain's control but it had the store smelling like wet dog... but you can take your cookie and eat it outside so no worries! read more

There can sometimes be a long line but when I went a bit after lunch, there were 2-3 people in front of me and the cashiers work fast. There's places to sit inside the bakery, though limited. My favorite have been the lemon one they had during spring and the Rocky Road they have during summer. They're chunky, crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside, without feeling undercooked. Also, adding the ice cream to them goes really well! ( my kid had that, but unfortunately I don't have a picture of it. It was great. They're moist and chewy, I love them. Unlike other cookies, these actually are flavorful, not just loaded with sugar. Also noteworthy, the quality is great regardless of where you get them. We've had them in NYC and in Georgetown and they've been great in both places. The shop is really clean and the staff is friendly and helpful if your unsure of what to get. With a place this famous, I feel my review does not need to be too detailed as what needs to be said likely has. I personally love the cookies though I understand if the style is not for you, always fresh and warm, interior is clean, modern, and well decorated, a bit of seating too if you need it, and even the coffee was pretty good. Prices a bit on the higher side but the cookies are fairly large. The one thing that was a bit frustrating was how long it took to be served. There was a line, but only about 6 people in front of me, and it took about half an hour to get a single cookie. The staff was friendly, but it seemed they were prioritizing online pickup orders and thus ignoring the line, they would take one order, then go and take a while to pack everything, and then serve. Everything was ready and on racks, just seemed that it was a combination of not having enough staff/thier priorities that caused these delays, which was quite frustrating. So, I stopped into to Levain because since I moved to DC everyone said that it's a must have. I must be completely honest. The cookies were good but honestly tasted run of the mill. I have had better cookies and unfortunately nothing about the cookies stood out to me. My eyes were drawn to the loaves of fresh bread lined up against the wall and to he baked goods in the clear case. Ah, there are the Swiss Rolls I was hoping to see. Yes, there were other things in the case (muffins, cake slices, butter/jam baguette), but honestly, I stopped looking after I saw the Swiss Roll. Of course, I went with that and also a double chocolate chip cookie. The Swiss Roll was okay. I wished that the first couple of bites tasted chocolatey - instead, it was just plain, sweet bread. Nothing that special. Once you get to the chocolate chips, that's when the magic happens. The oatmeal raisin made for a massive, and delicious, end-of-the-day snack. The cookie continues to be my favorite. As for the double chocolate chip cookie? It was my treat during my flight home. Each bite included a ton of chocolatey bits. I was happy. I respect that they keep their menu pretty stable, despite the weekly turnaround trend most other cookie bakeries do these days. The line is almost always snaking through the building and out the door, but they do a good job of keeping things efficient. I do wish they had a deal if you purchase a set amount of cookies, since online they have packs of 4, 8, and 12; I like to buy several to freeze at home since I'm not local. The employee that rang me up was a little snarky when I asked, but hey, maybe to them dumb questions do exist? Aside from that, their cookies are always great, no matter the year or season. Quality is always consistent and the cookies freeze nicely. I usually go for the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip or the Dark Chocolate Chip, and those of course didn't disappoint.. but since my SO is a fan of Oatmeal Raisin, I bought him one and nibbled on it... and that one is good too!
