This bakery is where it's at! This spot is a wheat based bakery which I thought was unique and their flour is milled in the house. The interior is small but cozy- there's also some seats/tables outside. I ordered the savory scone and a chocolate croissant and they were both delicious. The scone had cheese, mushroom, and chives which all worked nicely together. The texture on the croissant is peak. Perfectly crunchy/buttery exterior with satisfying soft chew in the middle. The chocolate in the middle was the perfect amount and wasn't too sweet either. For drinks, their syrups are also made in the house too! I ordered the Chai and at first I asked for half the syrup because I'm not a fan of drinks that are too sweet, but the person who took my order assured me that it's not too sweet to begin with and she was right! The spices in the syrup were delicious Nice ambiance, friendly service, and delicious baked goods! Overall, one of my favorite bakeries I've ever been to. If you're in the area, definitely check it out!
Adding a few more pastries to the list Financier was delicious, but also very sweet. Monkey bread, very sticky, as it should be, and you can really taste the whole grains The scone was a bit too dry for me, and the fruit inside of it was a bit offputting? But nonetheless, the texture was good and enough sweetness.
One of the city's best bakery's in my opinion. One of the first things that drew me to Seylou was the fact the they mill their own grains in house and that they use whole grains at that. They never skip on quality, which is a testament to why they seemingly always sellout on weekends. If you get nothing else, then at least get the almond croissant.
NGL, I was pretty hesitant about trying a whole-wheat croissant (don't fix it if it ain't broken), but was curious enough to give Seylou a try. I came on a Saturday morning and was surprised that there was no line--I was in and out within five minutes. I bought two loaves for my housemate and me to share (levain and rustica), and bought a chocolate croissant for breakfast. The chocolate croissant was surprisingly good and exceeded my expectations. The lamination was solid for whole wheat, and although the layers weren't as flaky as a regular croissant, I did like the toothsome, whole-grain texture. It was definitely more dense and substantial than your typical croissant and left me feeling kind of nourished (and healthy?) after finishing it. As for the bread, the levain sourdough has a great texture with an open crumb. The inside of the rustica was a little more crumbly and less structurally sound than the sourdough, but I still think it's a solid loaf. I would definitely come back to try their coffee, savory pastries, and other loaves. Also, they give you a $5 discount after your first visit and $5 around your birthday (which is an additional motivator to go).
I came for a sweet treat and left with the most flavorful baguette. I stopped in midweek in the morning so there were almond croissants and baguettes. I love that they post what times different products will be ready so you can plan your visit accordingly. The croissant was delicious. I sat outside at a table and entered into a minor territorial dispute with a chickadee over its right to try and steal crumbs... I won, but learned not to sit outside with my treats. I brought the baguette home and ate it over the course of a few days slathered with butter and strawberry jam. It was so delicious that I came back a week later and picked up another baguette with a strawberry matcha latte. My only complaint is that the strawberry flavor was an extra $1.50 and I could neither see nor taste it in my drink.
Coffee done right finally!! Amazing pastry. Few GF options, it will be awesome to see more. My #1 place for coffee in DC
Such a cute cafe that is hidden away in mount vernon. A definite new go to spot that is loved by the locals. The barista was so friendly and remembered peoples names and families. You walk in, there is all the pastries and kitchen there so you see the process of what's being made. Interior was on point. I ordered the maple iced latte with whole milk - 9/10 actually so good and perfectly sweet without being too sweet. Herb garlic labneh & feta croissant scroll 8/10: super flaky yum I want to try their breads bc that's their speciality. I'm not a huge fan of feta but this was amazing!!
A very interesting cafe! I've never thought to make croissants with any other kind of flour, and I was very impressed with the layers thru were able to achieve! The whole grain flour added a bit of grit, almost nuttiness to the pastry. Their matcha latte was fine, nothing particularly exciting but refreshing to have with the croissant! There's some seating inside and outside. Would recommend trying!
Seylou is known for their variety of bread and baked goods, but they also have a whole coffee menu! Upon walking in, we see bags and bags of different grains and behind the counter where we order, there were loaves and loaves of freshly baked bread. There's not a lot of seating, but we managed to find a table for the four of us this past Saturday afternoon. NITRO - 4.50 I thought this was going to be a 12 oz cup (for the standard small), but it was more like 8 oz! However, it was creamy and chocolatey, and I enjoyed the nitro cold brew. CHOCOLATE ALMOND CROISSANT - 6.75 Dang, pastries be costing a lot these days. This was a nice item to share with my friend, but the croissant was dense. The center of the croissant had a similar texture to bread but there were still a few flaky layers on top. Texture wise, it was on the harder side, unlike the soft and fluffy croissants that usually come to mind. Lots of chocolate and almonds, which ended up being very messy. Overall, it was enjoyable, but I'll try a different pastry next time. My friend got the butter coffee which is drip coffee + butter. This was a very unique drink that ended up being savory and rich, so I'll have to get it the next time I'm here. Another friend got the matcha latte which was weirdly grainy with too much milk. She didn't like it, unfortunately.
Neighborhood coffee shop. Friendly quick service. It's a bakery that serves morning coffee and other morning drinks to start your day. This is the place you want to start your busy day with. These bakers start earlier than you. So the ambience of this place is about the hustle but swooping down and enjoying the process. Smells like morning
Was expecting more from this cafe! Nothing really excited me when I went in and was hard to figure out the flavours of each item. The girl behind the counter was very nice and told me what they had that day and I went with the rhubarb, strawberry and hazelnut scone. The hazelnut overpowered everything else and all I could taste was hazelnut. Slightly disappointed!
Seylou is one of the best local bakeries DC has to offer. Nestled between the neighborhoods of Logan Circle and Shaw, they offer a variety of baked goods and coffee selections to match any person's taste. I absolutely love their vegetable pastries and cold brew, and I order them regularly when I venture here in the morning. Every Wednesday evening they also offer their pizza, which you can order ahead and pick up in the store. While a little on the expensive side, it is quite large and tastes so good. I always have leftovers for the next day. The service is always quick and they offer both indoor and outdoor seating if you'd like to sit and enjoy your purchases at their location. Definitely make sure you get to Seylou soon!
Recently started a new job and it's close by this bakery that I have bookmarked to visit for years! I am glad to come for lunch (12:15pm) and it's busy but not a big line. Staffs are friendly and fast service. Consider they are mainly bread, pastries and coffee bar, it makes sense for the fast turnover. I'm actually surprised they have more than pastries and offer sandwiches too! Def coming back for it. I got a loaf of bread, some pastries and a flat white - Great! I only had their mushroom danish and plain croissant for now - it's definitely what I assumed it would be - Amazing in quality and taste! It reminds me of a bakery in Seattle, where it's all artisan breads and pastries w highest quality and visuals. (I mean, when it looks beautiful, it already add a point!) This is a rare find in DC! We have sooo many bakeries/ cafes but I'd say none really consider the real artisan style pastries and bread... You'll have to visit out of DC (VA or MD) to get similar.. so good to know there's Seylou here representing! Flat white with whole milk is decent, dialed and steamed well. No complaint! I will come back for their sweet syrup drinks and try for sure. Now that I can walk here from work... It will be hard not to come as a regular! If you like passionate baker's pastries, and willing to pay that price for the cause, this is definitely a must go! read more
Hmm, I had high hopes for this place, but I did not have the best experience here. The highlight was the cinnamon bun, it was tasty and you could tell it was a healthy version. It was also one of the only feasible options to order as the majority of the pastries were terribly burnt. I really wanted to try the monkey bread, but all of them looked completely burnt so I passed on ordering that. The lattes were just plain bad. My first order was not drinkable as the espresso was completely burnt. I switched it for another latte and that one was at tolerable at best but I found myself struggling to finish it (it was also still slightly burnt). My friend had the same experience with their latte, completely not drinkable. Theirs tasted absolutely horrid, I didn't realize drinks could taste that bad... they had to switch it out, again for another subpar but actually drinkable drink. Terrible experience, likely my first and last time coming here. read more

Absolutely amazing pastries with friendly staff and a great atmosphere. We ended up getting what she called the french onion soup pastrie (but i think it's real name was something else) and it was wonderful. Super rich with strong cheese and layers of well cooker onion that were just underneath. The bread itself was fluffy and a bit chewy as well. The staff was super friendly, great with recommendations, and was able to heat up our pastrie pretty fast. The atmosphere is bright with lots of natural light coming in and a sleek design. The seating fills up fast but the line wasn't too long. read more
I tried them at a farmer's market and was sufficiently convinced that I wanted to see the store. I applaud this place for its local and regional focus. There are some quality baked goods here. As a cafe, it leaves something to be desired. I ordered what I thought was a big loaf and ended up being a smaller one, though it was full of as many seeds as could possibly be expected. The labeling was puzzling and the loaves were a bit far for my eyes apparently. A rye cookie was distinctive and on point, and while I mistakenly ended up with a bag of crostini instead of the croutons I thought I was buying, the slightly larger pieces will have no trouble finding a use. I appreciated the option for a golden milk, but in reality it was about 50% golden foam. The shop was cramped, and the price was premium. I'd come back for baked goods, but wouldn't be that interested in dining in. read more
What's not to like about this bakery? The food, service and ambience are all to die for, and it's a 100% whole grain bakery! As a baker myself, I was THOROUGHLY impressed. What I tried: - Pan au levain loaf: oh my gosh, this fresh bread loaf did not last more than a week. Beautiful tight crumb w a slight chew. You can really tell that the owner of the bakery really knows their stuff. - Cardamom bun: I'm not usually a cardamom fan, but if you are, these would be right up your alley because the cardamom is so well pronounced and the dough was just so pillowy & soft. It was so hard to believe that it was whole grain. - Regular croissant: the whole grain really worked here as the croissant had a more satisfying bite to it whilst still maintaining those flaky layers. - Chocolate croissant: also delicious but I think I would've preferred a bit more of the dark chocolate. - Cinnamon roll w maple ricotta frosting: This one I surprisingly really enjoyed and it had a very unique flavor. I'm not sure it's reminiscent of a classic cinnamon roll but the frosting paired with the beautiful roll was simply a delish bite. - Rye brown butter chocolate chip: so I'm personally a fan of cakey cookies so this hit for me. Solid chunks of chocolate throughout paired w the nutty brown butter base was just exquisite. - Caramelized onion bialy: this one has got to be my favorite. It was just the perfect level of sweet and tangy, caramelized filling and nutty exterior from the bun. - Double chocolate spelt: this one was probably the most unique something that I've never tasted anything like it before. Not one of my favorites, but I loved learning about how spelt can be used in baking! read more

I was the first person to enter the shop when it opened at 8 but a line soon followed. I ordered a vanilla bean oat milk latte and it was so good. I also had a savory cross isn't with labneh, feta and spinach. I had questions about the ingredients and although there was a line behind me, the cashier eagerly answered my questions. It's pricey. $17 for a latte and a pastry, but I don't regret it. The shop itself is really gorgeous and there's plenty of seating for those who are looking for that work from the coffee shop vibe. I'll definitely be back. read more

I've tried most of the bread bakeries in DC proper and Seylou is cranking out the best loaves. They select special grains and then mill them themselves, so of course it will be excellent. They also do a long ferment, making the loaves more flavorful and easier to digest - win, win. I've also tried several of their pastries, which I would call rustic and delicious. On Wednesdays they make pizza, which is also excellent, but not the best in the city. Why not 5-stars? The sticker shock for their bread is real. I understand what goes into their process and I appreciate it, but one of their loaves was $18. Their matcha latte is also very sad, it was pale green and had very little flavor. I'm sure their coffee is great, but if you aren't doing matcha well, maybe don't offer it. Overall, one of the best bakeries in DC (maybe the best) and worth a visit! read more
LOVE Seylou's whole wheat bread & pastries! Their bread are chewy and favorful. I am a fan of dark bread, and really enjoyed their horse and rustica bread. If you're newer to the game, go with their lightest bread! Their breads generally taste healthy, which I love, but my husband is not a fan of the "burnt taste" as he describes it :/ so you might or might not like Seylou depending on your taste. We both admit the quality of all their bread is 100/100! Definitely on the pricier side: three loaves of bread, one chocolate croissant and a bialy (bagel) came out to be $70! I crave their whole wheat sourdough bread from time to time, and it's an excuse for me to make the trip out to DC :) They close pretty early, so plan your trip accordingly. Everyone there is SUPER nice. The place is small but the rotation is quick. read more

The freshest pastries I've ever had. We heard about this place from a well known bakery in Raleigh. They mill their own grain which isn't too common so we knew we had to come. You could tell the locals knew this place was good despite maintaining a low profile. We got half a loaf of rustic sourdough bread, a regular and almond croissant then a cinnamon bun. Bonus - we were able to take home some starter! read more

Got the chocolate croissant! It really is incredible that they produce pastries with whole wheat that still taste just as good (it's probably the butter haha). Love their commitment to sourcing local grains. Go early if you want to get certain pastries because they will probably sell out! I wish the inside had a little more space but it is cool to see the oven and the prep space in the back. read more
This is an amazing bakery, to be clear. It's just a little too pricey, in my opinion. I got the daily fruit pastry, an almond and cherry danish. It was delicious and set itself apart from other great pastries I've had in the past with its distinctive whole wheat flavor. The flavor felt more developed and a little earthy. But, coming in at almost $7, I don't think I can really justify coming here very often. It's worth a stop as a treat though. read more
So good we came back twice in the same day on our two day trip to DC! The girl behind the counter even remembered us. We loved having breakfast here. It was a quiet space even though it was somewhat busy. The pastries had a good variety between savory and sweet and service was friendly and great! Really enjoyed the corn pastry. They also run buy one get one 50% off for their loafs of bread later in the day. Would become a regular if I lived here. read more

The interior of this place is so beautiful. Rustic and exposed brick with a modern edge to it. The staff are all incredibly friendly and accommodating. I just got an iced matcha latte and it was great. Even though there was a line out front, it went very quickly. Definitely check them out for baked goods and drinks! read more
I love a good quality bakery with whole grain, locally sourced, fresh milled sourdough. It's a rarity. I even bought an einkorn loaf with these pastries. Believe me when I say you can taste the quality! There is so much flavor from the sourdough and whole wheat . Nothing like I've tasted before. I highly recommend anything that is plain too like a regular croissant to really taste the difference. The ambiance is such a cute small cafe. Pretty quiet but quickly filled up with customers even at 8am. read more
