Shorgogal (hard as a rock and completely inedible)
    Lauren F.

I was so excited for this cafe after seeing so many good reviews, but they ended up being false. The shorgogal was hard as a rock and completely inedible. I took it home and nothing could soften it up. It was so dry and stale and even the flavor was deeply unpleasant if you could get past the texture. I paid around $7 for this and it was so bad I threw it out, and I never throw out a pastry if I can possibly eat it. I am so sad to have wasted my money on this and so incredibly disappointed in the quality of these baked goods. I can't think of a single redeeming feature. Was this 5 days old? It should never have been served to anyone. What a sad afternoon. The man behind the counter was nice but I just can't get over such terrible food at such a high price. Maybe the coffee is good, but please don't make my mistake and waste your money on the baked goods.

We were excited to find a Turkish coffeeshop in Georgetown, but were left unconvinced with the experience. The Borek was not the best we had, the donuts tasted more like beignets, or maybe that's what they were supposed to be; they were ok. Most tragically, the baklava was of commercial quality; didn't taste good at all, I abandoned it after two bites. Coffee was good, they serve Julius Meinl, an excellent Vienna coffee brand. I won't return.

Cute and cozy cafe! I stopped in here just for a quick treat and really enjoyed their cherry danish! I also ordered a vanilla latte which came out piping hot but was pretty good when it cooled down. There's not a ton of seating but it wasn't crowded so I was able to grab a table and just enjoy a cute place to sit!

When other options fell through, I found this place open for a holiday. They purport to offer baked goods in Azerbaijani style (the second Azerbaijani cafe in DC that I am aware of). I took a recommendation on a lemon-filled donut that was delicious, and added a savory option which was some sort of bread twist with a lot of sesame seeds. They did not have the rosewater chai on the menu, and my generic big brand chai was fine but not especially worthwhile. There was enough indoor and outdoor seating here at the edge of Georgetown to hang around, and I was glad I found this place.

For a more unique bakery experience in D.C., go to Caspian Crust, a small bakery and cafe opened by two business partners from Turkey and Azerbaijan. The moment you walk in, you'll see a spread of pastries made fresh every day. There's baklava, börek (cheese, spinach, and meat), honey cake, and more. They also serve dips with cheeses, sweet cherries, and more. They have a variety of tea from rose to mint. Their coffee is Julius Meinl from Austria and yes, Turkish coffee is on the menu! There are a few seats on the bottom floor and more upstairs. They also have Wi-Fi. (Password is written down near the register.)

Delicious coffee with wonderful looking pastries and yummy sandwiches. Staff was kind and remembered us as we returned several days in a row :) Limited seating but that is to be expected in small cafe.

Wonderful little cafe in Georgetown that has delicious pastries and breakfasts with a Turkish flair and lots of choices for coffee and teas. Absolutely everything we tried was very good and very friendly service. And as a plus they allowed us in with our little pup!

Terrific sweet and savory pastries. If you haven't tried Turkish and Azerbaijani pastry before, you're in for a treat. The cheese borek is especially good, and the people who run the place are really nice. Highly recommended.

They are open until 1 PM on Saturdays, we reached at around 11:30 AM and I was half hoping for them to be out of most items. Fortunately, even though they were super packed, we were able to find all of the items we were looking for - thanks to the hard working staff as they continue to make their pastries until closing - unlike so many other bakeries these days that make a certain amount and call it a day! Now to the food, everything we had was absolutely phenomenal! I am not a donut person but I loved theirs as they were very flavorful and weren't too sweet. I definitely prefer their Ube and Pandan over the Black sesame donut. The Matcha chocolate croissant and the Ube Kouign Amann were my favorites of the bunch! I cannot recommend them enough, this will surely be my first stop every time I am in DC!

This time we had our baby and I wasn't impressed with the lack of sides or anything to get for her. We asked for two eggs scrambled with cheese but were told we'd have to buy an egg prosciutto sandwich for $11 and tell them we didn't want any of the items. Um, no. The tuna sandwich asked for lettuce and told can't add lettuce. My husband asked for something not on his lamb pita, same story. Oh well. No customization at all, no subs. Makes business easier, but not as attractive for price point for customers. I'll remember to keep it to coffee and pastries from now on. Chicken pita was good, a bit heavy on the parsley but loved the dressing. Tuna sandwich was a hit. Pastries are always good. My pistachio latte was chewy bc it had grainy bits of pistachio in it. Not to my liking. $70 for three sandwiches, two coffees and two cookies.

I had absolutely no plans on buying or eating cake that day, but as a cake lover stuff happens. It was such a cute building the pastries had to be everything! It turned out to be the perfect stop. 1. The looks The building itself is so cute on the outside, and being a fan of the color pink, it instantly caught my attention. Inside, it feels less like a fast, high volume bakery and more like an intimate cake boutique. It gives small town where the owners know you by your first name. You can feel that real love was put into the space and the baking. Tasted like every ingredient was hand mixed, every cake hand frosted, and every cookie carefully hand scooped. They even served my slice of coconut cake on a real plate, which was such a cute, bourgeois touch that I loved. 2. Service The hospitality here is top-notch. On my first visit, yes you heard me! Lol! The gentleman Eric who rang me up was incredibly knowledgeable about all the different cookie and cake flavors. I ended up returning the very next day, and although he wasn't there, the other two staff members working which included Mikaela were absolutely delightful and so kind. The young lady told me her daughter loves the carrot cake as well and Mikaela said they started working there because they loved the patties so much! 3. The Cakes -Coconut Cake: This slice was so delicious, fluffy, and airy that it instantly reminded me of being a kid at holiday family meals with a fresh coconut cake on the table. -Carrot Cake: It was everything you want a carrot cake to be. It was nice and dense yet soft, with a pleasant texture from the added fruits. Definitely noticed pineapple bits! The cream cheese frosting wasn't overly thick and was so good you could eat it completely by itself. -Strawberry Cupcakes: I stole a small bite of my son's. unfortunately, this one was my least favorite. The frosting had a little chemical taste to it but it was a super cute cupcake. To answer your question, will I return? Absolutely! If you are in the DC area or planning a trip there soon, check this spot out. It truly feels like a mom and pop or pop and pop boutique. Not a bakery but a BOUTIQUE! Check them out! Tell them Anisha from Milwaukee sent you! (Not that they'd remember it just sounds cute!)

That's when I stumbled onto Sharbat. It's a rather quaint and cute Azerbaijani bakery and as I was window shopping all the cakes and baklavas, someone across the counter says "let me know if you have any questions" and I look up to see an angelic beautiful woman (this does not affect my rating haha) but I guess I wasn't expecting to see that. Anyway, she went through explaining various pastries and had a couple Turkish ones as well. I went with a pistachio baklava and a slice of honey cake. Honestly, I wanted to try all the cakes and even though they say honey cake is their most popular, there were a few that looked more appetizing. However, slightly convinced by the one other customer there eating her slice of honey cake, I decided to try it. I've only had honey cake once before so I won't act like I know what's best but that time the layers were thinner which I prefer but I like how it wasn't overly sweet despite it being honey forward. The baklava was one of the best, but I probably say that about most baklavas.

But now I suggest that Sharbat is a bakery for people who think they don't like baklava. My friends finally persuaded me to try some, and oh man is it good. It's nothing like the baklava I know. Perhaps because it is made Azerbaijani style - at the eastern end of Turkish culinary reach. It is more cakey and less sweet. But still plenty sweet, with a nice nutty crunch. I don't know whether to kiss or curse my friends for turning me on to this, but now I know. And now so do you.
