I also got a piece of gooey butter cake which was also fine, but it's the baguette that stole the show! On a Sunday afternoon there were a bunch of people seated outside and a few inside. Very cute space, they're known for their bread. Their pastries were good, but nothing out of this world. Outstanding DC bakery with some of the best, most delightfully flaky croissants I've found in the District so far! Located at the top of a hill in Cleveland Park, Bread Furst can be a bit of a trek to get to, but it is absolutely worth every step. This popular shop can get quite busy, so definitely take a moment to scope out the pastry case before you hop in line. They have one staff member take your order at the case, and then they'll enter it into a handheld POS system that punts your order over to the cashiers. Once you've shared your order for pastries, bread, or savories, you can hop over to the cashier to give your drink order and pay. The whole process is quite efficient, but the layout is a bit confusing and the process not super well-explained, so it can be a bit confusing the first time you visit. I usually get their classic pain au chocolat, my favorite way to judge any bakery. They execute on this traditional pastry beautifully; it is delightfully flaky and has a gorgeously laminated dough and glossy, crispy finish. It comes with a generous portion of chocolate and is generally the perfect breakfast or mid-day sweet treat, especially when paired with a cup of coffee. I've also sampled their sour cherry and sea salt cookie, which is quite fun; the cookie itself is buttery and thick, and I love the way the tart cherries and salt counterbalance the sugar to create a complex, not-too-sweet treat. read more

The best thing on the menu is what is in their name. The bread! Sesame semolina is the right amount of crusty with toasted sesame seeds outside, use it for a sandwich, have it with a smear of butter and marmalade or dip it into a romesco or baba ghanoush-- a more elegant and less dense version of Whole Foods' now discontinued Pain de campagne. The Jambon Beurre is as Parisian as it gets. The baguette is perfect, butter satisfying, topped with good ham and gruyere. All elementary age group kids including ours were biting into honey glazed donuts and not one could be heard complaining, must be good. Lemon pound cake, a well made, delicate pound cake. After reading multiple reviews mentioning burnt bread or pastries, we were worried. Our fears almost came true in the toasted everything bagel with cream cheese, with one side dark, closer to black--some may call it burnt. But good news, I love my bagels a tad over toasted, it was a win-win. It is a very good bagel, does it stand a chance against Pearls's, no. Hazelnut ganache bar is a good cross between a fudge and a mousse, the citrus helps balance the dark chocolate and nuts. Not too sweet, great for sharing on a hike or eat it all by yourself. Least favorite item--maritozzo or the italian sweet bun--the whipped cream couldnt hide the over egginess--too eggy even for a brioche bun--plus not too much going on for it flavor wise. Service is fast, queues move quickly and ordering process is efficient, especially when compared to a a few years ago. Retail part of the store is enticing--jams, jellies, candies, crackers, wines. We stopped looking around after a point to keep ourselves from buying. Yes, they could do with more indoor seating. I heard many great reviews of this place (despite the Yelp rating) so I wanted to try myself. I think this would be a perfect cafe in NW DC... there was plenty of seating outdoors while indoors was meant for ordering + going through their non-bakery items. I was honestly overwhelmed by the number of pastry items on display, so I got a standard berry-filled pastry item (I forgot its name). It was pretty efficient to eventually make my way to pay for my item. I will say this is probably the most expensive pastry I've ever bought anywhere in DC, and it was only above average. I love Bread Furst! I have to say that you kinda need to know what to get here, and it took me a while to find out what to get and what to avoid. This is not a good place to get a bagel (too dense and small) or a sandwich (premade and sometimes soggy), but their pastries are excellent. If you're lucky, you'll stumble upon their rarely available chocolate almond croissant, which may be the best pastry I've EVER had in DC. If they're out, they almost always have pain au chocolat and canelé, both of which are nearly as good. Their coffee, though maybe a tad burnt when I had it, is much richer and more complex than what I've found at most other cafes in DC, which tend to serve acidic/fruity coffee. The workers are always super friendly and have an efficient workflow to get you your food and drinks as quickly as possible. On top of that, they have a beautiful patio right on Conn Ave surrounded by lush plant life. Overall, a place that I'm glad I gave a second and third chance to. I'll be back soon. read more

In particular, the pain au chocolate was really great. It was buttery and sweet and had a good flake - all elements of a great croissant. But Bread Furst also sold some food in its fridge, and we tried their barley soup (which was way too acidic for me), and their eggplant dip (quite bland in my opinion). So this cafe was very cute & I enjoyed walking through it. It seems like a place you'd actually stop by in Europe with the long narrow hallway & outdoor seating in the front. It was fun looking at the food being prepared but it's pretty pricey. For what we got (Veggie sandwich & chicken adobo sandwich plus a lavender latte & matcha latte), it was meh. The sandwiches were dry & I wish they were at least toasted or prepared fresh. We also got a croissant which was meh. The drinks weren't the best either, the matcha used a lower quality matcha & the latte just tasted like lavender syrup, but nothing special. You can tell this place is popular and they're used to getting people in and out so while I applaud the fast and efficient service, it was also very rushed if not stressful. Definitely know what you want before coming or standing in line because you will not have time to read a menu and the only menu is the board. Printed menus for people standing in line would go a long way! Ordering experience aside, I got the "messy egg" which is truly super messy -- messy enough that it's not enjoyable to eat as a sandwich but the sandwhich itself was tasty - a simple bacon egg and cheese on a standout fresh English muffin. I also asked for a side of apricot jam to put on my sandwich which took it over the top it was so delicious!! But they charged me $2.50 for maybe a tablespoon of jam which is crazy! Got a vanilla iced latte which was great. Also got a croissant monkey bread which was super disappointing. Lacked flavor and was almost kind of stale. Some seating in the cafe but not much, and a fair amount of seating, maybe 8-10 tables on the patio outside. I've been meaning to come to Bread Furst for years so my expectations were high and I can't say I was blown away. Great local spot if you live in the area and I would definitely come back if I'm in the area. Will try a few more of their bakery items. I ordered the messy egg sandwich on a bagel and it was god awful. it looked like someone threw up on my bagel. The eggs were super soggy and runny, but not good runny, bad runny like someone threw it up. Half the bagel itself was soaked from the runny eggs. The other half that wasn't as soaked was tough and flavorless. It was completely inedible. The only good food item was the bottled juice. I was here in December 2025 and was meaning to write a review. I was in the neighborhood early morning and needed sustenance on a tight schedule and limited options, this was nearby and looked cute, (I mean the name alone of the bakery makes your curious) ordered a smoked salmon sandwich that came with an egg on top and it was on an everything bagel. The bread was good but the egg was SO runny (I typically love a runny yolk) that the eggWHITE was also liquidy and the yolk was cold. That was not appetizing to be honest but seems to be their thing. I think they called it sloppy egg or something. I guess that should have been a warning and not a cute name for normal runny yolk. I forced myself to eat the salmon and whatever pieces of bread that was salvageable. When you walk in there are a lot of middle eastern flavors around and the staff wore head bands or hats that reminded me of Palestinian embroidery but later did some research to find it is not middle eastern owned. Ordered a variety of items via Uber since I was craving great bread and I thought it would all be good or better at this well-known Washington bakery. Wrong. The bread IS delicious -- the Rustic Sourdough makes amazing sandwiches and the Palladin Rolls are chewy and perfect to eat with a dip or anything with a sauce, or as a chewy dinner roll with butter. So I got a bunch of things to dip bread in, namely the Eggplant dip, Crab Salad and Whitefish Salad. They were all so over-salted, I had to throw them out! The Fruit & Nut Bread was burnt on the outside and so overcooked and hard within, it's hard to imagine how it got sold in that state. Such a shame because it was absolutely packed with fruit and nuts and should have been delicious. I enjoyed the Chicken pot pie although it wasn't the normal kind with gravy. This one was solid like chickeny mashed potatoes, but it was very good and I loved the generous & flaky top crust. Oh, the potato salad was good too. Uber did refund me for the Fruit & Nut bread, I imagine because I could check off "burnt or overcooked" but there was no ability to note over-salted so I had to settle for "didn't like the taste" which really isn't helpful in conveying what seems to be a legit problem. read more

It's cool that you can see the behind the scenes of bakers baking bread and pastries through a window right by the entrance. The bathroom is gender neutral, and was clean. I loved the artwork inside. My friend got an apple tart and a baguette sandwich (can't remember how it was said on the menu but essentially a ham and cheese). The prices are on the higher end, but I'd say they give a good amount of food to make it worth it. There is also a market place with different Knick knacks food items for convenience -- think tiny Nutella jars for $1.50, gummy candies, homemade hummus containers. Though there was a line, service was fast and we were in and out. I'd love to give it another shot since I treated my friend out but she had to head home right after. read more

I'm awarding it 3 stars mainly because the service wasn't great, my decaf espresso was overpriced (one shot for $4), and my bacon and scrambled eggs sandwich was just a good bacon and scrambled eggs sandwich with a generous amount of eggs. I also tried a slice of my friend's coconut pastry and it wasn't memorable. I'm not saying that their baked goods aren't of good quality, because they are, but I believe that the place is usually crowded because of its location (busy avenue in a residential neighborhood) and the fact that they seem to be consistent. We each got a messy egg breakfast sandwich and coffee. I also tried their seasonal lavender iced tea, which was very tasty. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Ambiance is friendly and there's some seating indoors and outdoors, though limited. They offer amazing pastries and an assortment of dry goods, spreads, pastas, cheese, and more!
