Great atmosphere....romantic Paris! Prices and atmosphere try to lure you into believing the food is good. If it were half the price it would make sense, but for the price the food is terrible. Steak is tough and overcooked. Green beans really not good. Escargot....horribly tough and tasteless. Our hotel (Renaissance Marriott Vendome) had it as one of their three recommendations. Thus lots of wealthy tourists were dining there when we were there. But, make no mistake this is a tourist trap nonetheless. When we walked in there was only one other table full and they make a big deal about us not having reservations. But, by the time we left it was still half empty. I wanted an experience of dining in Old Paris, in a beautiful brasserie, and this restaurant fit the bill. It's one of Paris' oldest restaurants, serving food since 1900, and is now listed as a historic monument. We made a reservation ahead of time online for lunch, as we did not want to spend too much, and we were not disappointed. You walk in and you see the interesting mosaic tiles on the floor, the high ceilings, the wooden booths, the ornate crown moldings and the fine light fixtures that will transport you back in time. We were led to one of the booths and given menus. You can order the prix fixe or a la carte. They have quite an extensive menu, with traditional French food, as well as international dishes. I wanted to stick to French food, as they will probably do that best. For our entrées, my sister and I both ordered the Crusty Goat Cheese over a green salad. I love goat cheese and this preparation is such a perfect way to serve goat cheese. My husband had the Arugula Salad with Shaved Parmesan and Sun Dried Tomatoes. Very good too! The sweetness from the sun-dried tomatoes was a perfect balance to the bitterness of the arugula. My sister's boyfriend ordered the Onion Soup and he loved how tasty and cheesy it was. It had a great crust on top. We chose their wine of the month which is a red wine from the South of France. It was very reasonably priced at 24€ for a bottle. It went well with the Braised Beef that my husband and I ordered and the Lamb Chops that my sister's boyfriend has. My braised beef was very tender but not overly so, and the mashed potatoes, just so delicious with the butter. My husband loves potatoes and he thought that was the best mashed potatoes he's had. My sister ordered the linguini with shrimp and lobster sauce. OMG that was great. I should have ordered that. Loved the sauce! The portions were quite large. I could not finish my main dish. We did order the Crème Caramel for dessert, but we barely had it. We just had a taste of it. We were just way too full at that point. I thought service was okay. Our server was nice and he took care of all our needs. Food was timely and nicely presented. This place was featured in the Diane Keaton/Jack Nicholson movie, Something's Gotta Give, and judging from all the French movie posters displayed, in many a French movie. Oh and if you want to take a stroll after your meal here, head to the Jardin du Palais Royal. It's half a block down rue Vivienne. We planned an evening visit to the Louvre to avoid the crowds (it's open until 9:45pm on Wednesdays and Fridays) and we needed someplace nearby for a good French dinner. Le Grand Colbert was recommended and we made a late reservation for 10:30pm. We arrived a few minutes early but were seated promptly. The ambiance was great, it felt like we had been taken back 50 or 60 years to another time in Paris. Our waiter was quite the character. Not quite friendly, not quite rude......but confident. We left the aperitif suggestions and wine choices up to him and we browsed the large menu for some time. We enjoyed a TON of food (some of the largest oysters I've ever seen, escargot, french onion soup, salmon tartar, beef tartar, beef carpaccio, duck in a peppercorn sauce, skate with roasted potatoes and capers, and roasted chicken) and a TON of wine. Our waiter switched us over from a white to a red half way through the meal and the wine flowed so freely that we had no idea how many bottles we had gone through and had to ask the waiter not to open another bottle!! We left room for dessert and got a baba au rhum, crepes suzette (both were SOOOOO boozy it was a little insane) and the waiter recommended the floating island but came back moments later with the disappointing news that they were all out. The waiter recommended the profiteroles which we weren't that interested in but he assured us "I will bring you one order....and have a few more ready for when you want more." He wasn't kidding, they were fantastic and we did get a couple more orders. By the time we left it was almost 1am. We had practically shut the place down, there were two other tables with a couple of people left. We wobbled back to our apartment, all of us content, happy and stuffed full of delicious food and wonderful memories. read more

Le Grand Colbert, my favorite of all in Paris. Its all about the food, food, food and wine! I think my most favorite meals here have been their specials so I recommend going that route. I have enjoyed their roasted chicken as Diane Keaton in the famed moving "Somethings Gotta Give" touted about. She didn't tell a lie, the rosemary permeates the broth but not overly powerful and the fries are divine. The wine list is awesome, but again, I will say to go with their recommendations on the menu. They are never wrong. I highly recommend the oysters which taste of the Mediterranean and the tuna tar-tare. The bistro environment set in old style French decor is just special. This place has a really good vibe. They traditionally will speak French which I enjoy since I am trying to use what I have learned. But do go to English if need be. Great place, great service...great staff! While in Paris three weeks ago, we went to the Grand Colbert based upon a recommendation from our hotel concierge. It was my daughters 20th birthday, so we wanted to go someplace special...but NOT too expensive. Food was great...especially fois gras, escargot, veal, EVERYTHING was great! To top it off...they heard it was my daughters birthday, so they brought out a big cake with sparklers and all sang Happy Birthday...needless to say, a birthday evening my daughter will never forget! Le Grand Colbert (LGC) seemed to us a dangerous pick for dinner because we feared that it was too hyped after the Nicholson/Keating/Reeves movie (Something's Gotta Give). What made it less unnerving was that a worldly friend suggested that LGC was a "must visit" despite all the attention brought upon LGC by Hollywood. So here's an overview: Service was excellent The food was acceptable Ambiance was fantastic But with all the great restaurants in Paris (like the relatively nearby "Frenchie") it will be a difficult sell to return to LGC. This is one of those classy french bistros. We had the escargots, and really great oysters to start. For our main course we had kidneys and the duck confit. Overall great spot but we did find bugs in our water and the menu fell on our food from above when the waiter was trying to put it away, I would thought at least offer us a free glass. This restaurant has incredible food! They start you off with the typical olives and fresh bread. We then ordered the frog legs appetizer. Those were the nicest frog legs I've ever tasted. I'd say they were like the tenderest chicken wing ever! We ordered two dinner entrees. Mark ordered the braised beef. It was accompanied by buttery mashed potatoes. The beef literally melted in your mouth! I ordered the duck confit. It was perfectly prepared, accompanied by potatoes and a side salad. The dessert was a amarena cherry sundae variations. Food was terrible: barely warm fish that I think had been reheated. The table next to ours left most of their chicken, and the table opposite paid a fortune for a medium rare Chateaubriand steak that arrived medium well. Waiter insisted on speaking English to us despite being asked not to as we're fluent French speakers. Why come to Paris for terrible French food and to speak English? We had dinner there last night based on a friends recommendation I think it's an overrated restaurant, the soup came out cold and my wife's soup was too salty, the bread was stale and the seafood platters that we ordered were nothing to brag about . The desert they brought out on a tray (gateau, cake etc. ) was left over from the night before , that's not what you would expect from a good restaurant. Went to this place like many others because of that Diane Keaton movie, and was really disappointed. The staff were rude and not at all attentive. Even the waiter said something along the lines of "I'm tired, i don't want to be here" -- the food was meh -- the oysters were ok, the pate was barely edible, but the carrots they bring you as an amuse-bouche were good. The roast chicken was like rubber and very disappointing. The ambiance is stunning -- the building and the history are impressive, so if you go there, just go for coffee and desert or a drink and oysters. Everything else was very overrated. read more

Everything about the restaurant was fine, -- the food, the waiter, the architecture -- Except for the Maitre D'. He was a smileless tall thin Asian fellow with a menacing disposition. He was unwelcoming and perfunctory as if he were doing us a big favor. I saw him dress down some flower peddlers and I could visualize him supervising tortures in an internment camp. Everything, from the dishes, starters, wine, and service, was fine, but we all agreed was pretty overpriced. Fun fact: the soda was 7.50 euro (for about a 355 ml, i.e. the amount in a soda can) and the beer was also ridiculously overpriced (even for Paris standards). I stopped by late night after dinner to kill time and wait for the Eiffel Tower to start sparkling. If you leave this place and cross the street, you get an awesome view of the Eiffel Tower! I only had a cappuccino, the kitchen was closed and I had just ate somewhere else. The restaurant had very friendly waiters and staff. I love any coffee and or cappuccino from any place in France- needless to say it was delicious. Giving 4 starts based on decor, service and location. I felt rushed, they kept trying to take my plate before I was finished which surprised me. I'm used to it in California but Paris? So, what drew us in is that we were staying in the neighborhood, which by the way is a great place to stay especially at the a Hotel Square Luvois, a real gem. We happened to walk by and the interiors are beautiful indeed...old world Parisienne look. Made a reservation but only available time on our trip was a Friday at 5pm. We were a seated at "the table #29" but waited a bit to be served while about 6 other people in whole restaurant. Waitress informed us after a wait that it was because they were "in between" services so it would be slow. Why make a reservation time for that time then? Either you are open for biz or not but it shouldn't be an excuse for poor service. Food ok...roast chicken dry and nothing special. Disappointing...will head to Balthzar's at home for the best roast chicken in the world! This place is about ambiance not food. read more

My partner asked at the Park Hyatt for a recommendation of a place serving blanc de veau ... We went in for lunch. Apparently this is dish is extremely common in the French household but rarer on a restaurant menu. Something grandma would make on the weekends, but they have it here. He ordered it (22 Euro), and it was good. I ordered the typical sounding steak frites (27 Euro). It was the best steak frites I've had. The steak was wonderfully tender, and the frites were spot on. Steak frites is a common and easy dish, but so often just nothing too exciting. This was exciting. The place is spotlessly clean, very authentic yet very new feeling as well. Okay, I'll admit I first wanted to try this place after watching the mesmerizing birthday-cake scene in "Something's Gotta Give." But when we went two years ago, the quality of the food and service blew us away. So this time around, we had to repeat the experience. Our server was funny, kind and exceedingly competent and professional, as has been our experience with almost every French server we've encountered. He gave us plenty of time to decide as well as a break between each course, without which we never would have been able to eat as much as we did (and at Le Grand Colbert, that's a good thing!) We started with prawns, oysters and champagne: the seafood came on a raised bed of crushed ice, below which were butter, toast points, lemon and a delicious sauce made of red-wine vinegar and sliced shallot. Lemon, vinegar and salt may seem too much for an oyster, but they heightened the briny notes perfectly, and the creamy butter on bread was a delicious accompaniment. The prawns were huge, meaty and flavorful. With our main courses, we drank a rose that the waiter recommended, and were not sorry: it was crisp and light, but sturdy enough to accompany everything from steak to fish. Preparations and presentations were immaculate. And Diane Keaton was right: the best thing they make is roasted free-range chicken. The pan gravy will make you wish you were an inch tall so you could dive in. Desserts were likewise stupendous, and the portions were uncharacteristically large for French bistros: we each ordered one, but should have split one among the table! The floating island and Amarena cherry parfait were especially decadent. If food has to cost this much (around 70 Euros per person for several courses, including drinks) I'm glad it can be this good. No we didn't but the lovely hostess took pity on us and asked if we could be done in 2 hrs..but of course we only wanted dinner. Walk down the street, choose any café where the locals throng, and I bet you'll find better food, more welcoming service, and a more authentic atmosphere. Our experience was shabby from the beginning. We were unable to enjoy the famed ambience because we were immediately shoved into the tourist cattle pen by the door. My husband's chicken and my seafood platter were average at best. The only thing monumental about this historical monument was the size of the inflated bill. There are restaurants that you go to the bathroom and are afraid you will never make it back to the surface.. However this is a GREAT RESTAURANT, world class. Here is why! 1. Central Paris- YAY! Stroll through the Palais Royale before and after dinner! You just earned 20 Paris points! 2. Fabulous Belle Époque Ambiance! Hi ceilings, bistro chairs, mirrored and panneled walls with ornamentation and Yes, it was also in that movie! It is just a fabulous "real paris" feel (until you step into the bathrooms where they have PAPER TOWELS and modern plumbing - all of the main floor (that is American!)). 3. Champagne. The waiter recommended a great champagne, relatively inexpensive. Stunning! The Demoiselle if you must know! Served in a big icy bucket with a lot of cork-popping flair. Romance, ah! 4. Menu: Something for everyone. Our table (5) had it all: Foie Gras, artichokes, chevre, onion soup, skate, sole, beef béarnaise, pintade, chocolate ...and FRITES. One stop all French items you could want. All were delicious- no complaints at our table. Lots of people taking pictures of their food. 5. Wine. Again, we were a little high on champagne when it was time to order wine, and the waiter did it again- ordered us the perfect, reasonable thing- a Bourgogne: Sigh. 6. Dessert: profiteroles, mousse, millefeuille, paris-brest. Nice carte- no surprises- YUM. 7. Upon entering, we were greeted with the upmost request and seated at the "famous table" as we requested. Such a nice manager (completely forgot his name), service was pretty good other than the server questioning us on ordering a bottle of wine to make sure we are aware of the price, food was excellent (escargots, mussels, slow cooked beef, and.
