I have mixed feelings about Bistro des Augustins. On the one hand, it provided me some of the most comforting and delicious food that I enjoyed in Paris. On the other hand, it made me realize that my mother was a terrible cook. Bistro des Augustins is a small, cozy venue offering both indoor seating and terrace seating near Pont Neuf. It serves a small number of curated dishes, including a wonderfully traditional Bistro Gratin in a homey ceramic dish served piping hot with a brown crispy cheesy top, herbs, spices and chicken. You can also get it with salmon. My brothers and I only saw my mother use our gas range to light her cigarettes, sanitize needles to remove our splinters, and make s'mores during the summer months when she couldn't muster the energy to take us 'outside camping.' I mean, all she had to do was borrow a cookbook, which I'm sure were readily available from maybe a neighbor or in any local bookstore or the public library. How hard is that? I was the only kid who brought a can of tuna and his own monogrammed can opener to school every day. Every day. And mom convinced me that the tuna holster she got me for my birthday was cool and hip. I was a naive mercury-filled fool, although I did become a very fast runner in junior high school because of the tuna holster. The interior décor of Bistro des Augustins is informal and vintage bistro style - wooden tables, traditional chalkboard menus, and soft lighting - creating a relaxed and comfy ambiance. Didn't blow me away, but was solid with the creaminess of the sliced potatoes and emmental cheese combined together with mixed vegetables. The cheese was very strong though, so anything else was unfortunately pretty much overpowered by it. Arrived with bread, but it DEFINITELY could use other carb options to sop it all up (e.g., rice???)! = Landais - Cheese gratin with duck. Same comment as the above, except the Landais had egg and goat cheese also mixed in with almost the same ingredients as the Fermier. THE SERVICE ----------------------- + The lone waitress, who also worked the role as greeter, cashier and bartender was friendly. + Food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. We didn't have a reservation and it was crowded. Every table was filled, but one. The server behind the bar said to wait that a reservation might not show. He was right and sat us within a few minutes. He recommended the gratin. So we had the vegetable one and shared. It's really big and so good. Get bread. We also shared the salmon salad. Fun little family-owned bistro in Paris! The ambiance was typical French seating, close together, and was warm and cozy. Seems like a local favorite from all the French being spoken. My Gratin Nicois was extremely hot and flavorful - with ham, egg, and anchovy, and herbs of Provence. My hubby liked his Gratin Fermier (Farmer), with chicken & herb de Provence. Server spoke English so it was easy to figure out how to order. It does get busy after 7 so go early or make a reservation! MAGNIFIQUE! Or, at least I think that's how the French say it- I just got by with "Vous parlais Anglais?" Came here on a local's recommendation that I stopped on the street. He didn't seem too pleased with me, but the Bistro des Augustins' cuisine more than made up for his attitude. Absolutely smashing. They're known for their gratins, which I definitely partook in; the French are praised worldwide for their cooking and this tiny place certainly represented that. When I tell you that the gratin was mouthwateringly delicious, I mean it- try for yourself! Also served with a complimentary basket of freshly baked bread. Service was great, very personable staff that gave excellent recommendations. Seems also that locals frequent it, which is also an excellent sign. Wine is excellent, as expected. The best part? Just a few steps from our hotel, we had wanted to try this restaurant ever since we arrived in Paris. It always seemed so busy but this time it was the middle of the afternoon, not so busy. We stopped in. It is a small place, like many places here in Paris, a handful of tables inside, a few more along the sidewalk. We sat inside. The menu was not what I expected, not sure what I expected. There were two main groupings, stuff on toast and Gratin dishes. I went with one of the Gratins Chauds called Fermier which included chicken. There was an accident where dishes and food were dropped, not ours, but I think that delayed us getting ours. It took about 30 minutes before we were eating. Initially I didn't care too much for mine, it was temperature hot, very hot, and hard to enjoy. As Americans, we were in a bit of a hurry, the food took so long to come out, and now it was too hot to eat. But as it cooled and as I ate I took a liking to the dish more and more, and ended up finishing what was quite a lot of food. Of course the cheese was my favorite part, but the chicken slices were also very good. I'm glad we stopped in. I took a real liking to the woman who ran the place as I watched her work, no nonsense but good with customers, including us. read more

Be forewarned that the wait for a gratin here is exceptionally long. This is because they appear to only have enough room to cook maybe 4-6 at a time and each one seems to take at least 20+ minutes to cook. At any rate, we were lucky enough to get a table immediately since we went in the off season, but the wait for food was still pretty long. I don't think they give you bread unless you ask (we didn't). Anyway, Scott got a gratin with bacon and I got one with chicken. I thought both gratins had so much potential in terms of flavor, but again, the recurring theme on our trip was the lack of seasoning in the meals. It was a miracle that right behind me against the wall was where they kept all the salt and pepper shakers, and lo and behold, hot sauce! I know it's sacrilege, but we both did add a few dashes of Tapatio in addition to a generous shake of S&P. It was there, so why not use it?! I also found one of ours to be somewhat burnt on top, but otherwise, it was a decent meal after the seasoning was added. read more

It's a really simple menu and their speciality is galettes so we shared a Landaise (with slices of smoked duck) and a Fermier (with chicken, herbs, egg) with 500 mls of their house viognier. I am so bummed we wasted a meal here during our visit. We had absolutely terrible service, and the food was not worth putting up with the poor treatment. This is definitely a place that blatantly treats Americans worse than the locals. They repeatedly walked past us without offering menus, water, utensils, anything. Mind you, tables were seated next to us and served immediately. We tried getting help, and we were completely ignored. Please note, we were very polite, quiet, and friendly customers. Once we finally ordered, we ended up waiting over an hour for our one order of gratin to arrive. My husband also never got the drink he asked for, but we decided this was a lost cause. We saw a couple of other tables give up and leave due to the service, and we contemplated doing this but did not want to repay the unkindness we received with more unkindness.
