Juvéniles landed on my radar via a recommendation from my brother who was traveling with me. He had heard good things about it and decided to make it one of his choices for dinner while in Paris. That being said, I booked a table for our penultimate night in the city. Juvéniles serves up creative French fare, and like other restaurants has a large wine selection - so much so that it's marketed as a wine bar in addition to a restaurant. We were seated promptly once we arrived; the space isn't too large and the decor is minimal - though honestly the main focal point is the large wall of wine bottles which is decor enough. I thought the lighting was a bit off - it was too bright, but that's more of a me thing. The menu had a selection of apps and entrees, and additionally they were showcasing some specials. But first, wine - the team gave us some good suggestions and we ended up picking something that went well with our mains. I also thought it was a nice touch that they offered wine by the glass, bottle, or a carafe. We didn't want to commit to a bottle so the carafe was perfect. For my app, I decided to start with the butternut squash and chestnut tart. The squash was cut in layers and piled into a buttery crust that was sliced. The tart was good, and came with a tasty sauce that complemented it well. For my main I went with the pork; this was sliced and paired with potatoes and mandarin oranges of all things. It sounded odd, but honestly it worked - the pork was tender and the sweetness of of the oranges paired well with it. Additionally, the dish came with a flavorful sauce and thin slices of cheese that were also good complements. For dessert, we decided to get the rice pudding with salted caramel. This was excellent - the rice pudding was flavorful and the salted caramel was nice and thick. The sweet caramel played off the more mild pudding - a great finisher. Service was good - the staff was friendly and food came out at a good pace. Overall, I had a good experience at Juvéniles - the food was inspired and high quality, all served in a comfortable atmosphere. Personally, I would opt to dine elsewhere when I return to Paris just to change it up, but this is a solid spot for a good meal. read more

Juveniles is near the Louvre and Notre Dame and is a great place to get food and wine. We had their short rib served in a puree sauce that enhanced its flavor so much more. This is a small spot and when somebody got up there would be somebody shortly to take the empty table. The service was terrific the staff were very knowledgeable about wine. Our meal was yummy- this as our last night in Paris. Make a reservation- this place seats maybe 25 people. Hubby had beef cheek and I had their scallop dish. We both had their celery soup that mussels plus other yummy items like tiny croutons and peppers. All was delish. Of course we had a bottle of red French wine. Nice small restaurant in a busy Parisian neighborhood. Started with a nice cold bottle of Chablis to put us at ease. We ordered the special starter of roasted octopus and chorizo. We also started with the veal tongue croquette on a bed of julienned green apple. For mains, we had the roasted Guinea hen served with cauliflower purée and mushroom jus and the seared scallop dish with a shaved fennel salad. Finished the meal with a nice espresso. Such a let down. Was recommended by several blogs and I worked HARD to get a reservation. Service was okay and the food was below average and not cheap. Favorite Parisian meal from our two trips in the last few years. We had lunch in the small space which looked tight with the full house but still felt comfortable and spacious enough to enjoy our meal. Service was quite friendly and helpful which surprised me since I had a hard time when calling to make reservations with my limited French. On this day they spoke great English and made dining very easy. Starters were exceptional if a tad bit salty. Grilled razor clams with ginger and watercress with a buttery sauce. Delicious with the bread. The other was grilled octopus with new potatoes, sopraseda sausage, broad beans and sorrel cream. It was lovely. We could not decide which was better. The mains were equally strong: roasted rack of pork with Parmesan gnocchi and sautéed chard- excellent. The wild turbot fish was maybe even more delicious and came with several different side flavors too. There were many delectable bites in each dish that all went together beautifully. We had no room for dessert which saddens me but will save space next time. As we left the hostess told me that when I first arrived for our lunch (I had walked ahead of my wife since we were running late for our reservation) and told her "J'attends mon mari" I had said "I'm waiting for my husband" which made her laugh as she saw my beautiful wife come in so I also learned a little French over lunch! read more

This is ALWAYS a go-to for myself and whoever else travels with me to Paris. The wine selection alone is worth the visit. You can just grab amazing small vineyard wines and go. But, if you are lucky enough to get a reservation stay for the food! The restaurant staff will pair your food with the special selection of wines that they carry. Very crowded interiors but good food. Boyfriend and I came for dinner at 9pm after visiting the nearby Musee de les Arts Decoratifs, and it was jam packed. We had a reservation and were seated right away by the lovely Scottish waitress. We had an awkward encounter in which I found the wine we ordered by the botte a little too acidic upon tasting it, so I asked if we could order something different, and the staff was hesitant about it but also accomodating and ultimately agreed. I chose a very sweet white wine by the glass and my boyfriend had a glass of red. We shared the cured meats platter (€13.5) which had many slices of delicious ham and sausage. I had the lamb main (€20) and my boyfriend had the cod (€22). Both were very good. I'm not sure I would return since there are so many restaurants in Paris and it wasn't an outstanding meal, but it was a pleasant experience. read more

Found this place on a blog and it really was great! Simple wine bar that does everything well. We had the chanterelle mushrooms to start and Entrecôte as the main. The entrecôte also came with a salad and a really well whipped, creamy potatoes. They cook the entrecôte rare but to an American, it would be closer to medium-rare. A reasonably priced french bistro in Paris. Not super fancy, not pretentious, but great food. The Croquettes of calves tongue were excellent, perfectly cooked, and a big hit. The Beef for two, was also excellent, although we sent it back for more cooking -- that might just be our preference. It was great before we sent it back, but too rare for my wife. A very nice Sancere was €40, and a great value. Highly recommended for a simple neighborhood bistro in the 2nd arrondissement near the Louvre. read more

I give Juveniles 5 stars because 4 for is just not enough. This wine bistro (it's a wine retailer, too) is much more than good. I did a lot of restaurant research before this visit because I wanted to get out of my Paris restaurant box. Juveniles was an excellent choice. Very good food & wine coupled with a small, but cozy room and excellent casual serevice hit the mark for me. We went to Juveniles after 9 days in Paris and I have to say it was probably the best dinner we had! We started with the octopus as a starter and 2 of us had sea bass while our son had the lamb entree. We never ate at the same place twice but this is one place we would have visited again had we stayed longer. Service was phenomenal as was the ambiance. To be completely honest, the only reason I ate here was because Verjus across the street was still closed for renovations. But I'm glad I did, because Juvéniles is a cozy, friendly, unpretentious spot with decent food and really outstanding service. I started with a very generous plate of Charcuterie: three different types of meats, sliced paper thin, served with bread, butter, and cornichons. Delicious, but way too much for one person. Better perhaps for three or four people. But seeing that I could not finish, the very affable owner, Margaux, who speaks English by way of Scotland, offered to wrap up the rest to take with me, which is something I have never had a French restaurant do before, and for which I was very grateful. I'm more ambivalent about my main course, the equally-filling Wild Mushroom Risotto. It was full of flavor but also highly seasoned, which is to say on the salty side. But it was cooked to a perfect al dente. Some of the garlic slices that topped the dish were burnt though, which gave a dish a bitter flavor. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I would order it again. Because Juvéniles is also a wine bar, I paired both dishes with wines -- a Rosé for the first and a red Languedoc (I think) for the second. Both were simple but paired very nicely with the food. The entire left side of the restaurant as you enter is comprised of bins of wines for sale. They have both prices displayed -- one to go and one to open at the table. I have a weird life. In the last week I have had Taco Bell in Miami, Bar-B-Q in Charlotte, Pizza in Minnesota, Indian in San Francisco, Octopus in Napa, Mexican in Indianapolis and finally duck in Paris - ok...9 days. The canard at Juveniles is outstanding (charred on the outside and rare on the inside). Also outstanding are the wine and the charcuterie and especially the cheddar cheese for dessert. This place was so quaint and charming! I didn't expect to be blown away by the meal, but I truly was. We started with the burrata, but it's not how it's done at every other restaurant. They paired it with fresh peas, zucchini tempura and a pesto that was absolutely amazing. I had the rabbit which was fantastic and my husband had the duck. Honestly, we couldn't decide which meal was better! The service was wonderful! The owner was especially kind and welcoming. So far, after 2 weeks living in Paris this is the best restaurant we have been to. No frills. No pompous decor or stiff atmosphere. Just great food, great wine, and a great family owned establishment. Make reservations due to the small space. Allow the server/owner to recommend the wine. They speak English very well for us novice French learners. I recommend this to anyone wanting the real atmosphere of Paris. Afterwards take a walk through the nearby palace gardens. read more

So I wanted to impress my wife with "authentic" French cuisine. After walking my wife an amazing amount for the day, I felt something "French" was in order. First, we noticed this place was packed...deservingly so. It is small and quaint but one table was open. As I got the menu the French language terrified me. I have to give our waiter credit, he recognized us immediately for not speaking French. He spoke to us in English and explained the menu. He then told us the specials and asked if we were lactose intolerant. I ordered the pork with mashed potatoes and my wife had the fish with a potato salad. I noticed "Haggis" was on the menu and thought that odd for a "French" restaurant. The food was delicious. It was served with two types of bread and a vast selection of wines. The food was fast, hot, and delicious. The service was excellent. Towards the end I started to notice the "Scotch" ads and even scotch bottles. Then as I was checking out I sheepishly asked if they were a French restaurant as I truly thought It was. Turns out it is a Scottish restaurant. Oops. What a pleasant mistake. Go here now! This is one of my all time favorite dining experiences and I wished I lived in Paris so I could go here weekly. They have a fantastic wine list at very reasonable prices and a small but well executed menu. Every dish we ordered was thoughtfully composed and perfectly executed. The space is intimate and just the right size for the one waitress to to keep up with each table. The celery root soup was one of the best things I ate in Paris, and my boyfriend's gnocchi was the best he'd ever had (and he loves pasta). We also had the lamb and cod which were both perfectly cooked, and a dessert with clementines and a lemon crumble. They have extensive shelves of wine bottles for sale with a packet guide to find what you'd like. The quality of everything we had - both food and wine - was superb and the prices were incredibly reasonable. We had 3 glasses of wine, 2 small dishes, 2 main dishes, a dessert and 3 bottles to take away - all for 135 euros. Incredible experience! read more

One of the best wine bars on the contemporary Parisian wine scene is Juveniles, a cosy wine bar cum wine shop in the 1st Arrondissement on the Left Bank, at 47 rue de Richelieu, very close to Palais Royal, the Louvre and the Grands Boulevards further north. Juveniles was started by a Scot and a Brit a few years ago, Tim Johnston and Mark Williamson. Tim Johnston worked at Mark Williamson's (the Brit) Willis' Wine Bar from 1981. They created a wine dealership under the name of Great Grape Traders in 1984. In 1987, they opened the Juvéniles shop, selling wine and serving some tapas with wine. Juveniles became an outlet for off the beaten track wines that they would dig up from all over France. In 1998, the two long-time associates separated and Tim took the wheel on Juvéniles and Great Grape Traders. By that time, Juveniles had asserted itself on the Paris wine bar scene and began sourcing wines from further away. In the early 1990s, Tim made two trips to Australia and started to import wine from there. Juveniles became, with Willis' Wine Bar, the only place in Paris at the time to sell Australian wines, causing quite a stir. Juveniles is today a 'cult' Parisian wine bar and a fabled pit stop on the international wine bar circuit. Not only does it offer a wonderful selection of both French and other Old World, but also New World wines; and it maintains an excellent kitchen. Nice - tiny - wine bar. We stopped in for a late, light lunch (after 2). The menu was dominated by Scottish/British menu items. My friend and I opted to share a cheese plate as well as the fioe gras terrine. The cheeses selected were excellent - we didn't get the names but it included a "stinky" cheese, a soft creamy cheese and a couple of hard cheeses - yum. The fois gras was excellent and accompanied by toast and a fig jam. We weren't especially picky in our wine selection. I had a very good rose while my friend had a merlot - both were good enough to cause us to order a second glass. read more

So this place was by far the best meal I had while I was in Europe. It was recommended to me by a few friends that had visited a couple months earlier. I got the foie gras and this dish alone has turned me into a foie gras lover for life. A definite must have with a cab/merlot. Also had the crostini Ron, which was out of this world. Came here as a recommendation from many locals and websites, and we were overwhelmingly pleased with our whole experience. This a must restaurant for the food, wine, staff, and overall ambiance. We opted for the special that day, a whopping 17 euro to include a glass of the "wine of the moment". It was a lovely plate of carre du cochon (pork loin), butternut squash puree, sage butter drizzle, toasted almonds, blanched cabbage leaves, and roasted turnips. The food was perfect in execution and flavor, simplicity coming together in perfect harmony. The wine was a deep red beaujolais, much different that beaujolais nouveau, and was so good we ordered a half bottle in addition. As we scoped the room as it filled up (probably only seats 22 people at its max), we noticed that the majority of the patrons also ordered the special. But, the regular menu also looked as inviting, with a few offerings but emphasis on quality, integrity of ingredients, and plating. If you are looking for other wines, they have a lovely list of other wines from around France and Europe to choose from. They also offer their own "whiskey" for 8 euro a glass or 65 euro a bottle for take away. The place is owned by a Scotsman, whose daughter runs it now with her boyfriend as the chef in the kitchen. I don't give many 5 star reviews, but Juveniles deserves it. We tried to go there last night but it was packed, so we went to another very good nearby restaurant. I phoned today and got a reservation. We were seated immediately upon arrival. The wait staff all speak fluent English and welcomed us. The food and service were outstanding. We split a salad that was superb. I ordered the lamb dish, which was excellent, and my wife ordered Skate fish, which was very mild and tender. She loved it. We began the meal with Kir. We haven't had Kir in years but it was wonderful. My wife loved the wine she ordered and I had a nice beer. For dessert I ordered rice pudding with butterscotch. It was fantastic. If this wasn't our last night in Paris I would return. This was the best restaurant we ate in during our five days in Paris, and for Paris that's saying something. read more

Duck duck duck duck... GOOSE! Ok, no goose - just duck - The duck here was ab...solutely...amazing! We had it served medium and it was still perfectly tender, loads of flavor. This was by far the most amazing duck I have ever eaten. Head and shoulder above the other places we went to in Paris. The only downside is that we only ordered one! We also got the cheese plate - a load of different cheeses (blue, goats, cheddar, brie) with bread. Wow - the blue cheese stood out the most... wow - it was a mild flavored blue cheese - subtle... wonderful. The bread was as perfect as one might imagine. Things couldn't get much better! Juveniles was mine and my wife's absolute favorite dinner in Paris, and our trip included a dinner at Le Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower! Our hotel was able to score us a reservation and, if you plan to come, I highly recommend doing the same. It is a very small space stacked to the ceiling with wine. I'd guess it doesn't seat more than 26 people in the dining room at the most. Small didn't mean cramped, though. We were comfortably cozy at our table. We were very warmly greeted when we came in and got our first round of drinks quickly. She went with a Kir Royal and I had a glass of their house scotch, which is masterfully blended for them by the good folks at Compass Box. The scotch was so good that I got a bottle to take home! We ordered the burratina starter, pork for me and veal for her as our mains, and the chocolate dessert. Everything was perfectly cooked, full of wonderful flavors, and beautifully presented. Make no mistake, this is not the haute cuisine you would expect at a multi-Michelin starred restaurant, it's something that, for me, is so much better. It is real, straightforward food that you almost feel like you could make at home if only you had the talent. The portions are perfect, leaving your stomach satisfied even though your tastebuds yearn for more. Even better, the prices are very reasonable, especially for Paris. Including several drinks and all our food, we spent less than €120! We will definitely be back next time we are in Paris. I almost hate to leave a good review, because I don't want too many people to find out about our favorite spot, but these guys deserve it! read more
