My wife and I had late lunch at Le Grand Colbert and it was our favorite restaurant experience in Paris during vacation. The friendly welcome and comfortable seating, beautiful lighting and classic decor, the fine service and excellent food, all ensure we will return on our next visit to Paris. Œufs durs mayonnaise on the lunch special was delicious as well as the duck and the best flaming Crape Suzette I've ever had. Idyllic Parisian restaurant featured on the movie something's gotta give with Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Keanu Reeves. The food and service were good. We had the escargots (not as garlicky as I'm used to), beef filet with pepper sauce (green beans and French fries on the side), crème brûlée, and profiteroles. The green beans were bland. This place was heaven. I had a mix of both positive and negative experiences so far in France, and was excited to eat here based on a recommendation from some locals. We walked in wearing very casual clothes and realized we were completely underdressed. We got there around 645pm and asked for a table which the guy said was all reservations but they had one table right by the front door and bussing station which we gladly accepted. I had a cup of french onion soup with their free fresh bread, a side of ravioli au gratin, and a side salad. My friend had the lamb meal and the other had the chicken breast meal. I tried the chicken which was very homey and gravy filled which was delicious. My salad was awesome with a nice dressing, and the ravioli fell apart in a cheesy heavenly way. Their house wine was delicious too and fairly priced The French onion soup, my god, what a friggin delight! Then we got dessert, don't judge this was our only real meal for the day. I got something off the dessert cart cuz I'd never seen one before and wanted to be fancy. My other friends got chocolate cake and cheesecake as recommended by the server. My dessert mehhh, chocolate cake was oh la la, but the cheesecake was a direct send from God himself. It was by far the best cheesecake I'd ever had along with my friends. When we asked the server he said "because it's not American cheesecake!" And laughed. He had every right to be cocky because he has forever ruined cheesecake for me. Our total bill was around $150 and we gave the guy $200. He asked surprisingly if the tip was correct and we told him yes since it was one of the best meals we had ever had. Here is the 3-1-1: Food: Used in the film "Something Gotta Give" the expectations were higher than normal and unfortunately it did not deliver as well as the movie did. Started out with the onion soup and it was good but nothing that stood out as a must have. For the entrees, the duck confit and filet of bass were both fine but not memorable. The duck was a quarter portion on thigh and leg and though the skin was cooked nicely there were sections of the duck that were slightly dry but the potatoes that accompanied the dish were sauté nicely and seasoned appropriately. The bass was a little better in that it was tender and flavorful. The sides of fries were slight disappointment as it was not as crispy as thought so more or wasted calories. Service: Very efficient and the menu also has an English version so the wait staff well accustomed to tourists. The bread basket, potato chips and small bowl of olives came to your table once you are seated and removed once your entrées are served but the bread is handled by hand at the pick-up counter, so the bread is already touched a few times before it reaches your table. Ambiance: Bright, lively and very fun atmosphere. There were a few birthdays that night, so the staff sings and brings out sparklers to celebrate so its very nice touch for special occasions. read more

When a friend of mine who'd spent a good deal of time in France first invited me here with his family, I knew I'd be back. Le Grand Colbert feels like you're walking into Paris as Paris remembers itself - high ceilings, slightly arrogant but ultimately friendly servers dressed to the nines, and great food. Really great food. I ordered the seafood platter for one, and my girlfriend ordered the 3-plate menu, but the plan was to just share everything. Thank god. The seafood platter for one of was absolutely massive. There's something about having an intimidating amount of luxurious food in front of you, just waiting to be eaten. I stared down sea snails, half a crab, 2 crawfish, a pile of baby shrimp, 3 big shrimp, 8 oysters, and 2 clams, and took a moment to appreciate how infrequently I had this opportunity, and grateful I was for it. Then I piled it all into my fat, Canadian mouth, much to the horror - I'm sure - of all the refined French servers watching. Everything was amazing. I particularly enjoyed the sea snails, which were boiled in black pepper. My girlfriend's food was all good. She got the duck as a main. It was juicy, tender, blah, blah, blah... I've been to Le Grand Colbert several times and try to enjoy their fabulous boeuf fondant whenever I'm in town. I highly recommend this classic brasserie; the food is wonderful and the atmosphere is perfectly French. Was looking forward to this restaurant alot after our hotel recommended it. When we got here, service was terrible, no attention. We ordered french onion soup, it was basically water, cold cheese, and burnt bread. After we tried it, we told our waitress about it and she laughed and said, thats it. Rest of the food was also not very good, we got steak and that tasted like lamb liver. Not recommend this place. read more

My sister has watched the film "Somethings Gotta Give" about a hundred times and she really wanted to have dinner at Le Grand Colbert. It was only about a half mile from the apartment we rented so we thought we would walk and not take the Metro. She said she called to make a reservation, but her French is worse than mine and she most likely called another place and they couldn't understand her English. When we arrived they did not see our reservation, but they gave us a really nice table because I guess the early birds get a jump on the rest of the Parisians. I just ordered the French onion soup and salad. The soup was incredible and hit the spot. The salad was good too. My sister ordered the oysters and chicken. Went to the restaurant to get some drinks and dessert later in the evening since they are open till 1 o'clock with the maître d' was initially ready to seat us but then we said drinks and dessert and he turned around and said, "No, we have dinner only and reservations only ", and summarily dismissed the Americans at his door though there were tables obviously available. Just based on that attitude alone I would advise travelers to steer clear of a place like that because if they don't want our money then they don't deserve our money read more

On a recent trip to Paris, I wanted to dine at a "quintessential French brasserie". I found Le Grand Colbert in Departures magazine by published by American Express. If it made Departures, it must be good - so my standards were set pretty high going into the place. I went during prime time dinner service on a Friday night and was seated promptly, even though I was a bit early for my reservation. The decor of the place was definitely "quintessential": high ceilings, mirrored walls, tiled floors, soft glowing lighting - it was everything that brasseries everywhere in the world aspire to look like. The service was a bit stuffy, but very professional; somewhat brisk, but never rushed. I never had to wait for anything - whatever I asked for was promptly brought to the table and I never had to flag down my server - he always had a watchful eye on the table. I had the filet of beef with bearnaise sauce with a glass of bordeaux. What I was not expecting was the size of the portions: large. I figured the steak would be smallish and come with frites, but it was a good 10+ ounce steak, plus frites, a tomato, and haricot verts. Ooof. When I returned on Friday, the manager insisted that it was impossible to make a reservation at 11:30, since the restaurant did not open until noon. No apologies. We went to Le Grand Colbert for just the Chocolat Chaud which they serve only from 3pm-6pm. The restaurant has a wonderful Parisian upscale charm. The Chocolat Chaud presentation is lovely and traditional giving you a pichet of chocolat, a pichet of warm milk to dilute the chocolate with to your taste and a portion of chantilly. It was nice, it was delightful but it certainly is not one of the best hot chocolates in Paris, IMHO. Not as thick as one would want and certainly doesn't need the milk provided. I would rate it a step below Angelina which has fallen drastically in it's quality. We tried Le Grand Colbert and had the Chocolat Chaud and have no desire to have it again. read more

Classy restaurant located in the heart of Paris. Customer service was impeccable and the whole ambience was upscale and relaxing. The closest thing you will find to an American restaurant over there. The food is really good and the prices are reasonable to slightly pricey. Great place with amazing people working there. I had gotten the lobster linguini and boy it tasted like seafood! We made reservations a month in advance, I mentioned it was our anniversary. We were put in a corner with a loud crowd next to us, we could barely move. On a wet cloudy day as we explored Paris, my wife had made reservations in advance for Le Grand Colbert as she was enchanted by the atmosphere it gave off in the Diane Keaton - Jack Nicholson movie Something's Gotta Give. She had requested the same table, but it was a little earlier in the late afternoon (we had to be able to reconnect with our train back to London), so we were seated mid-restaruant. White table cloths and attentive well dressed wait staff, the room seemed exactly the type you'd dream of in Paris. We started the meal off with wine, oysters and and salmon spread, alongside the baguettes that were served. For our meal, she had the beef fillet beanaise and I selected the duck with galric sauted potatoes. Both excellent choices. For desert we had the warm chocolate cake that melted in your mouth, she had a cheese tray which ended up being a ricotta with preserves (okay, but an odd texture when expecting something else). I had an espresso alongside. This was exactly the type of restaurant you think of when you imagine French cooking. Everything was spot on and delicious. Disappointing at best. Three of us arrived 15 minutes late @ 6:45. Place was empty. Waiter took our order. Brought FO soup ,oysters and wine. So far all good. Downhill from here. Brought one main order and one side. Fries were cold so asked that they be dropped again. New fries came, colder then the first. They neglected to provide a new sauce so we got up to retrieve our original platter from the waiters stand. Still charming at this point. As an uncomfortable amount of time had passed we insisted the one order go ahead and start. She made an effort at it yet her filet was unyielding to the steak knife. A new knife was brought. It was not the knife. Steak was from an animal that was long past it's prime. Still waiting for the other dinners and sides, we approached the maitre-d and explained that one dinner was almost finished and the other two had not arrived. Puzzled, he checked with the kitchen. Now, our wine glasses had been empty for some time we joked, well, guess we'll just grab it from the bucket and pour it ourselves. Waters have also not been refilled. Guy comes back and says, just 5minutes. I can do that for you. Gee, thanks!! Brings us glasses of champagne for the inconvenience. First I already have a half bottle of wine sitting here waiting to be pored, and two, the champagne was god awful. No thanks. Around 8:30 we've had enough. Please just bring us the check. No no. Lovely setting. We had a reservation for 5 at 2 pm. Staff is typical of French restaurants. Aloof and distant. Raw oyster were fresh and the sauce was a vinaigrette with shallots. Fabulous. Overrated. They were out of the special sole meunière. I almost feel like they didn't necessarily ran out of it but perhaps reserved it for their more premiere guests. The service was sub...the waitress forgot to bring out the rice that went with the dumplings so one of our table members basically didn't eat their food while waiting for the rice that went with it. She was upset but decided to just ask for the food to go. I got the cod fish but I feel like it was probably not thoroughly cooked but I didn't want to complain so I ate it anyway. My mother's favorite movie is "something's gotta give." So when we booked our trip to Paris, this was her top request: dinner at Le Grand Colbert. I was afraid we were entering into a tourist trap. Faded movie posters line the walls and the atmosphere is nothing like it is in the famous scene with Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves. Instead, bright lights make you feel as though you're in a cafeteria. But, the redeeming thing was the food. We started with the French onion soup and shared the Dover sole. The Dover sole was of the best I've had. It was perfectly prepared and came with an excellent side of spinach. I could eat the fish with spinach once a week! I have dined here three times over the past year. I originally visited on a recommendation of a close friend who is in Paris often. The first time was the best experience. This is the epitome of a classic French brassiere. Charming, adorable ambience, beautiful lighting. The female server was delightful- very helpful and accommodating. The food was delicious. It was a five-star meal. The second time I went (about 6 months ago) was far less impressive. We were seated by the door. The service was terrible. The server was far too rushed and obviously could not keep up with his tables. He would disappear for extended periods. Both orders were messed up. It was a 3-star experience at best. The last time I visited was with a group of 4 a couple months ago and the service was about the same as the previous visit. Another rushed server with too many tables. Bottom line: The brasserie is very cute and has great ambiance. The food is pretty good (not amazing but above average. I like the duck, roasted chicken, green plate if I feel like something lighter and the warm chocolate cake if I feel like something sweet ). But the service is really lacking and seems to be getting worse over time. If the service were better, I would probably be a regular. But unfortunately there are too many great options in the same price point in Paris with better customer service. (Pick any spot on Bib Gourmand Michelin list or L'assiette Michelin.)
