I don't care how much of an expert you are on the streets of Paris, how amazingly you can converse in full fledged native French, or how acquantainted you are in the ideal foie gras-visiting Paris can be intimidating. It's hard to feel comfortable sometimes when you try to be ambitious, veer off the tourist road, and explore some of the more native Parisian hot spots- especially with dining. Le Grand Colbert offers a nice blend of authentic French cuisine with the comforts of an English menu with fluent English speaking waiters. This is why I booked this restaurant during our last visit to Paris. I knew it would give us the opportunity to experience French fine dining in an unintimidating atmosphere. This restaurant proved just that. Loved the decor. We got all dressed up and went all out and it was the perfect venue for this. I did see some casual people too wearing jeans but it was fine for either. The food was great, especially the steak au poivre which came in a delicious sauce. One of the salmon starters was pretty tasty and I adored my taste of the French onion soup. We couldn't squeeze in dessert sadly. I wish I could because I'm sure it would have been a great place for that. I'd definitely come back to Le Grand Colbert, but maybe upon my next Paris trip I will be brave enough to try out something off the beaten path! read more

You can't go to France without eating frog legs (its like going to Spain and not having tapas). And guess what? They actually taste like skinless chicken wings with less meat. The sauce was so good that I drained it with the bread. The veal stew was stewed perfectly and tasted very homey. They filmed Something's Got To Give Here and I thought it would be a tourist trap - surprisingly, the food completely exceeded my expectations and the bathroom was an adventure (I've never seen a self cleaning toilet seat). read more

I'm obsessed with Something's gotta give so of course I had to come here. Diane Keaton raved about that roast chicken so I had to see what all the hype was all about. I will say the presentation was great and the portion was really big (not what I was expecting) def fills you up. However I will say, it was tasty and good...not amazing. The escargot however was the best I've ever had!! The sauce that it came in was delicious, I could go back just for the escargot. The ambiance was great! Atypical tourist attraction, noted at the door by way of pictures of the film clips from the American movie "Something's Gotta Give" where a scene with Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves was apparently filmed. On a typical evening American diners will more than outnumber Parisian locals..... Overall underwhelming in terms of customer service with unusually arrogant wait staff from bottom to top. Normally that can be tolerated until one hears the "team" making snide and ridiculing comments among themselves. Seafood was fresh but limited in representation on the menu. With over 16,000 restaurants in and around Paris, you can avoid the expense and pretense of this one and be more than impressed with any number of the others. read more

Ok, so it's cheesy to come here since a movie was how I had heard about it, but we had a really nice lunch. It opened at 12, on the nose. My friend ended up being 40 mins late, so I had two glasses of champagne! The server was attentive. I had the onion soup, delicious. My friend had the house salad which had tuna, egg, anchovy etc, kinda niciose but not really. The setting is beautiful, esp with the Xmas decorations. Very romantic. I was on vacation in Paris for a week and was told by a partner I work with that I absolutely MUST go to Le Grand Colbert for dinner. There were a number of strikes in Paris at the time, so I walked a few miles to get here and was hoping to be blown away. It was good - not magical, just good. We started with the foie gras and escargots. The escargots were very good - not too chewy, and swimming in a pool of butter and garlic. That's how escargots should be served. The foie on the other hand was served cold, which was a surprise because I was expecting it to be hot for some reason. We ordered the peppercorn steak and unfortunately, it was just okay. My other half ordered the chicken and that was actually pretty good. The chicken was very moist and was served in a very light, flavorful broth. I would have liked a more "Parisian" experience and ended up with waiters that spoke perfect English, but what should I have expected going to a touristy restaurant like this. What surprised me was that a glass of house wine was actually cheaper than bottled water. Go figure. Le Grand Colbert is a traditional French brasserie, located very near le Palais-Royal, and la Comédie-Française. I find it a pleasant stroll from the general Louvre area. Many Americans frequent this establishment because of the last scene in "Something's Got to Give" avec Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Thus, English language menus are certainly available. However, I've been going here for years because of the great food and atmosphere. Classic French dishes are served here with very consistent tastes and variety for all. Wonderful foie gras, seafood, veal, duck, beef, and a chateaubriand for two that is just amazing. Wash it all down with a middle-level Bordeaux and you will be set. (Only hint: avoid the tripe sausages). I was so thrilled with excitement at thought of even landing a reservation for this place. (Apparently it's hot commodity haha.) We arrived to an empty restaurant, with a pushy, waiter who was in a hurry to take order. The menu was very faint in English. So google was definitely our saving grace. The waiter was very blah and not helpful in helping foreigners make a great selection. To be honest this restaurant was one of my MUSTS while in Paris based on reviews, and the movie. But BY FAR.... My biggest waste of time and disappointment. Please do me a favor!! Don't go to this place based on the movie "Somethings Gotta Give". Because this was by far my biggest disappointment. In return I can say nothing but amazing things about La Julean bistro in Paris. Talk about mesmerizing food. And beautiful memories that will out last my lifetime. Just returned from our first trip to Paris and of all the great places we went including a Michlen rated chef in champagne country on a private tour this place tops them all. If you're looking for beautiful ambiance, stellar service and food that you will dream about long after you're gone this restaurant hits it out of the park. The manager isn't getting paid enough whatever it is as he personally set the tone and went so far out of his way to assure we had a memorable experience, and we did. I've wanted go visit here for years as its featured in the film Somethings Gotta Give, we sat at the same table as Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton which was a great bonus,...the sauce for the free range baked chicken is beyond words great and the French onion soup had bread that was crusty not soggy like most...how they pulled that off I have no idea.... My wife and I had dinner there tonight (May 9th). The service was horrendous. The waiters and Maitre D were unbelievably RUDE! They acted like it was an inconvenience to serve us. And we were SO SO SO nice to them regardless. Speaking our best French, with merci beaucoup and s'il vous plais repeated over and over to them. I had a question about the final bill because their menu was VERY misleading and the manager was even worse! Again, I was very nice and admitted/accepted that I may not have interpreted their menu correctly. But they stomped off as if they were insulted that I even questioned them. Oh and by the way...the Roast half chicken was way over done and the braised beef virtually tasteless. This despicable place validates all the stereotypes people have of the French. After some pretty horrid dining experiences in Paris, this one really hit it out of the park. The service at Le Grand Colbert is impeccable; they are friendly and welcoming and did not make us feel insignificant at all for not speaking French. It was a refreshing and absolutely the best dinner we could have had! Started off with the oysters, which had amazing rich flavor. The escargot was easily the best I've ever had: plump, meaty, and so tasty. The steak tartare was delicious and surprisingly filling (maybe a touch salty because of the capers, but that didn't take away from the meal at all). The roast chicken really is one of the best; perfectly cooked, and the sauce was so flavorful and rich. For dessert we ordered the crepes flambe, which was very fun to watch as they prepared it tableside, but kind of wish we had ended with something chocolate instead. Overall, amazing meal. Our server was a young girl who was very friendly with us and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the dinner. She was great, and the restaurant was fantastic. I had escargots-perfection and the duck confit, which on the english menu is "preserved duck, sautéed potatoes and green salad". This was amazing! Dessert was a napoleon from the trolley. Le Grand Colbert might be the right option for you in Paris. It is a noisy, beautiful, old school place that exudes loads of charm. The servers are well-dressed and all business. The food is overpriced bistro food and seafood. Don't get me wrong, the place is so cool, you will leave thinking the meal was better than it actually was. I had a salmon tartare that was bland, run of the mill fries, and a perfectly cooked steak. For dessert the profiteroles were great, but for 14 €, they should have been. I asked for water and got a 7€ bottle of Evian, when I wanted the tap water that other tables clearly had. All in all, I paid about 15-20€ more than I would have paid for the same meal (dessert and wine comes to around 80-90€ per person) elsewhere, but the experience was probably worth it. read more

I was very excited to go to this place. It came very highly recommended. The look is fabulous and great people watching. However we arrived at 9 o'clock. The waitress shook head to the maître d'. With the motion to say I'm done. However we were sat in her section anyway. so after glaring at her for 20 minutes she finally stopped over to ask us what we would like to drink. 10 minutes later here comes my bottle of wine. Had to ask for water three times. Meanwhile noticing a plethora of people coming through the front door for the next hour . Started with the escargot very tasty. Myself and my wife visited this establishment while on our honeymoon across Europe. Le Grand Colbert was by far the best meal that we ate over the course of 9 days visiting London, Paris, and Rome. I got the salmon, and my wife got the chicken. Bot dishes were excellent. The salmon did not have a strong fishy taste as salmon sometimes has, though there was still a hint of it, but it was not over powering. I had a bite of my wife's chicken and it was fall off the bone, juicy, perfectly cooked. For desert we got the apple pie, which is nothing like American Apple pie, I did not care for it too much. It wasn't bad, just not my taste. It was made of of thinly sliced apples and then baked with a glaze of sugars, then had ice cream on top. It was tasty, just not what I expected when ordering apple pie. The restaurant itself is over the top "fancy" bright reds, and brass. To some I could understand how it could appear gaudy, but being an American and what not, I kind of enjoy the different atmosphere. I would recommend having reservations for this place, my wife and I did not and walked in at 2030 hours and was told there was no room and to come back in 30 minutes, which we did, and thank god we did because it was an excellent meal. We were worried this would be touristy because we knew it had been in "some famous movie" but this Bistro was really good. It's definitely a "fancy" place, but a really nice evening out, with strolling Gallerie Vivienne covered passages (beautiful!!) and then eating at this lovely restaurant. When we arrived, the maitre'd ignored us for 10 minutes and then asked us to stand next to the bar for another 10 minutes (not in the bar, which would make sense, but adjacent to the bar where the servers needed access and they made it quite clear we were in the way). To pay that much for such a lackluster experience was quite frustrating. They also sat us right next to the door despite my mentioning in the reservation that it was a special occasion. Could be just our luck, but we had the most salty onion soup ever - that were returned and ordered another veggie soup that came bland - followed by a beouf tartare that I had better on a brasserie. My husband had something similar to an (overcooked) shrinp cocktail but with a bland sauce and pieces of stale bread. Besides, prawls came with their whole shell, not only tail (?!) I noticed many were eating the "icy" dishes, were they displayed shellfishes of all kinds - like the one of my husband. It seams they are good on defrosting and assembling but not in cooking.
