I really liked this place until I found out about their eggs. I came in one morning to order a breakfast sandwich and asked to get an egg sunny side up instead of scrambled and they told me no, they can't do that. I was so confused as if they make these daily - how could this not be possible? Then the cashier proceeds to say "we scramble all our eggs the day before and save them for the next day" We walked out and never have been back since. That's pretty gross to prep eggs a day before, especially since eggs take 5 minutes to make. I really wish this didn't happen cause I did enjoy their croissants but i will not be back because of this. This place was right near our airbnb so we went here for breakfast pretty much every day. It was amazing! We often ordered their breakfast croissant, filled with eggs, cheese, and your choice of meat and it was perfect. By far the best croissants I've ever had. We also tried some of their other desserts: cannolis, amandine, cream puffs. They were all great, especially the cream puffs and the raspberry amandine tart. On a sunny day, it's lovely to eat outside. We highly recommend trying this place for breakfast! read more

This is a perfectly nice cafe in the heart of Columbia Heights. Something always important to me: When I asked them to make my hot chocolate extra-hot, it was, in fact super-hot. 90% of cafes seem to have no problem ignoring this small request! I wasn't too terribly impressed with their warm breakfast. They tout their croissants as the best in DC--and while I'm not sure about that superlative, that is a bit more their comparative advantage. Generally, while they have decent atmosphere inside and a nice perk from which to do people-watching outside, inside they seem to cater heavily also to people who want food to take out, what with all their glass counters under which there is food to choose and buy. They seem, unfortunately, to only provide paper cups, even for customers eating in. They have good wifi that even works at their outdoors tables. read more

I'm surprised at the ~3 star rating because this place was adorable and had a great selection of baked goods! The shop itself is pretty cute. They have a nice little patio area with chairs, tables, flowerpots n all that jazz. Inside, they had a wide range of baked goods, including like 4 kinds of croissants. I got the pistachio croissant, which was super delicious. Just the right amount of crispness and flakiness! Only comment I would make is that the pistachio flavor was lacking a tiny bit. Came here on a weekend afternoon. The shop was busy, the staff was friendly. We ordered tea, coffee, macarons, and a lavender cookie. I wanted to order more sweets, many of them looked just okay, not extremely appealing or screaming "eat me!" when looking at them close up. The macarons and cookies were yummy. The coffeee my husband ordere was "fine," not outstanding nor terrible. My London fog, which was not from the menu, tasted good though slightly bland. I only ordered it because the girl who took my order confidently told me they could make it, but I guess the other girl who made my drink struggled a bit and needed help during the process. I discovered this little cafe this morning. I was really pleased to find it, and when I walked in, everything looked beautiful and delicious. The girl working at the counter was also very nice. When I walked in, I was also hit by the overpowering smell of Fabuloso cleaning fluid. I didn't think this was a big deal, especially in a pandemic. But the croissants had an aftertaste of Fabuloso. Even worse, I bought a cupcake that I tried several hours later. And the taste of Fabuloso was so overpowering, that I had to spit it out. Now, 20 minutes later, I have a distinct soapy aftertaste in my mouth. I am sure that if they time their floor mopping better, or if they switch to a new cleaning fluid, they would be the perfect cafe. read more

Adore this cafe. If you've had a better croissant in DC, please educate me. Maybe hunger and hangover influenced my enjoyment, but biting into that crackling, toasted crust was akin to a religious experience. Fewer flaky layers than I'm used to but texture was still money. The bacon upgrade: worth the extra dollar. Egg is sometimes overcooked, but it was good enough overall for me to not care that it was only American cheese. Fruit salad cup was small but fresh and varied. Rounding down for forgettable drip coffee... will have to chai it next time. When I walked in early afternoon, it didn't smell like a bakery. So despite some pretty macarons and decadent looking macaroons, my expectations were low until I tried a pain au chocolate sample-- not amazeballs like the croissants, but promising. A number of fresh juice options including orange, apple, carrot-orange, and a few other combinations. Olive and seven grain loaves tempted me, and the others looked nice and crusty too. Scones, danishes, muffins, tartlets, cookies. (Is this enough carb porn for you yet?) Other cases were filled with fruit, coconut juice, parfaits, meringues, saffron rice bentos, and pastries of dubious age; I was surprised to still see Halloween-decorated nibbles, and the Earl Grey cake looked melty like a bad makeup job. Friendly service, thought apparently they've forgotten the oven Twitter account after expanding their space and menu. Thankfully I am not one who makes New Years Resolutions. This bakery has arrived in my building to such a warm welcome and I have already visited several times this week! Luckily, I already have a nice workout plan in place, which may need to be revved up a bit more with the arrival of buttery and tastefully flaky pastries! I have already tried the pain au chocolate, tiramisu, and la galette des Rois with apple tucked inside. The owners are amazing and super friendly, welcoming me into their new bakery, and providing tips on how to best serve some of their pastries. I went home and warmed up my oven to slightly warm the la galette des Rois for dessert one evening. mmmm...buttery, flaky, goodness!! Each day their treats seem to change whenever I visit, but they are more than happy to speak to you about everything they offer. Amazing to have this wonderful, family-run bakery in my building. Very cool to see the bakery window open to the street. Can't wait until it is warmer out-will be cool to sit outside over a nice pastry! have to add that many people are stating their prices are high. i actually think they are quite fair...unless you want mass produced bakery items -a la giant... Ok I love bakeries, especially French bakeries! I actually came across this place on Uber Eats. The first time I ordered fruit tart (which they were out of), chocolate croissant and I was craving my all time favorite dessert-"creme brûlée"...it was late night and whn I got it the topping was not hard (like brulees are suppose to be) the melted sugar was watery. The second time- I ordered (in the morning) a BLT on a croissant- but they didn't add mayo ! Thank God I had mayo on hand in my refrigerator. I tried to order the fruit tart again (they had some this time), another chocolate croissant and creme brûlée (this time it was so runny- I thought they should call it FLAN ! It spilled al over the bag, they did put my pastries in a box, otherwise it would've soaked them! And to add insult to injury they didn't bother to put cutlery in the bag. read more

One of my favorite places in DC for a light lunch or brunch. The service is excellent, and the store is owned/operated by a wonderfully kind local family instead of being a soul-sucking chain. (Although hey, I like soul-sucking chains from time to time.) The food is AMAZING - a huge selection of sandwiches and lattes, plus cookies, cakes, and various addictive baked goods. I just got back from a trip to Paris a few months ago, and while nothing will ever be 100% as good, the croissants and croque monsieur here come as close as is possible in America. The prices are very reasonable, and street parking is usually available. I've been here a ton of times - I walk past is every day - and NOTHING has ever been stale, let alone MOLDY, so I can only assume the negative reviews are left by rival bakery owners? Who knows. As good as everyone says--my croissant was flaky, soft and cloud-like on the inside, and perfectly buttery on the outside. It ended up being $11 for 4--a bit of a splurge, but worth it! Like other reviews have mentioned, the service was top notch. The guy at the counter was super friendly, but didn't bother me when I told him I wanted to browse a bit. He re-wrapped my to-go order when I asked for special packaging and even suggested a better option. Even during the middle of a Thursday the place was maybe a quarter full, especially the patio area. I often work at home, so I'm a regular at this place. It has some of the best fresh baked goods in DC. The sandwiches are interesting, the desserts are amazing, and the coffee is pretty good. They have good outdoor tables, though you need to be prepared for the Columbia Heights hustlers if you sit too close to the sidewalk. The staff is friendly and helpful. My tips for them: expand the breakfast menu a little bit since there are so few decent places to eat on Sunday morning in the neighborhood, and definitely upscale the coffee. Try some exotic roasts, French press option, or individual brews etc. And maybe make it easier to add a side veggie or soup for those of us who show up for lunch hungry. read more

I am a devoted visitor of Le Caprice. The almond croissants, macarons, the baguettes, and the pain au chocolat are all authentic French products, and just smelling the aroma of baking bread when walking by the store takes me back to my time in France. The family that owns Le Caprice are all very friendly and have done a great service to the neighborhood by setting up their bakery here. We decided to have a catered wedding dinner at our home last month, and they put extra care and effort to make sure everything turned out perfectly, even baking a specialty dish used for French celebrations. Our guests were very impressed and it helped make the gathering a big success. I highly recommend Le Caprice! read more

To put this review in perspective- I've lived in France and even I think the croissants here are world class. Also, the buddy I usually come here with is a French snob and she loves it too. As far as I can tell, everything here is made fresh in house. There are a lot of good breakfast specials (including a croissanwich with coffee) but they advertise them through taped up pictures around the cafe. It would be better if they just printed a new menu. There's outdoor seating which makes for good people watching if the weather's nice. It always feels a bit crowded and harried inside. I recommend picking up pastries to go or eating outside. The owner is super sweet and nice. Not my favorite cafe/bakery ever, but a nice addition to the neighborhood. read more

I stopped by this cafe in my way home, around 7 pm. The pastries weren't great, they seemed a little old, and did not have the textures I would have expected in a macaron, croissant, and cannoli. The pistachio cannoli was beautiful, and was not overly sweet. But, the fried pastry did not have a crispy texture. I think it was just not fresh enough, probably because I got it so late in the day. I tried a pomegranate macaron. The cream was tangy, and full of flavor. But the shell was stale tasting. The thing I was most excited to try was the hazelnut croissant. It also left me wishing it was fresher. The outside was still flaky, but also hard. I'll have to try this place again earlier in the day so that the pastry is more fresh. read more

Ate here a couple of times - nice outside patio and great waffles with nutella and banana. Ordered a tuna and artichoke baguette today. Not bad but a bit dry and needed some oil and vinegar or vinigarette which would have gotten it pretty close to a Pan Bagnat....my favorite sandwich of all time after several summers in the South of France. I typically order the #5 Breakfast Sampler. It comes with eggs w/ melted cheddar, tater tots, sliced tomatoes and b-b-b-BACON! They even throw in a small, freshly-baked roll. Pro Tip: Cut the roll in half and start with the cutest little breakfast sandwich you'll ever meet...(eat). During the morning, you can find the staff rolling and forming dough from scratch. And that smell? Yeah. The price is reasonable for the quality and quantity. They offer so many high quality, French options. I gave this place 4 out of 5 because I tend to arrive when it gets very busy and the wait could be longer than expected (depending on what you order). I had came in this small restaurant today while walking down 14th Street on my way to the metro station. I had walked past there so many times in the past but I was never really sure what it was about. I figured it was some sort of bakery or cake shop. When I walked in there today, I discovered that they do offer pastries and cakes, but also so much more. I noticed a couple of real lunch food options including pasta salad, turkey wrapped. And cold cut crossaint sandwiches. The most tempting seemed to be the chicken kabob patter meal. The grilled chicken, tomato's, and yellow rice, sits upon saffron rice which was so delectable! Placing the order to dine in, and it was fast and easy, and the lady who helped me was extremely nice. The interior of the restaurant has a nice vibe, and I saw several people actually performing work on their laptops. I enjoyed the food, coffee, and overall experience. read more
