Went into conniptions yesterday over how ugly my hair was. I couldn't wait even one...more...day to get it chopped. So I did some searching for a salon in my price range (under $50), open on Sundays and in the Berkeley area. Trekked down around 4pm and there were maybe 3 or 4 other customers in there. I didn't make an appointment but didn't wait more than 5 min or so. I noticed a previous reviewer who said that her hairstylist yelled in her ear. Yeah, there was a lot of shouting/loud talking in Vietnamese. But I didn't think it was too bad. I don't know the name of the lady who cut my hair, but she was an older woman with very short hair. She was very nice, and we spent a few minutes talking about what I wanted ("your hair too long. no style."), and then she basically dove into my hair. (Without a shampoo. I had said that I only wanted a cut.) It took all of twenty minutes, maybe? And my hair looked really cute afterwards; basically, I had said bangs, volume, and shoulder length, and she gave me exactly that. I didn't ask for a blowdry, but she gave me one anyway. She charged me $20. According to their brochure, women's haircuts are $18 and up. So I'm not sure what that $2 was for--the 7 inches she chopped off my head? The blowdry? But whatever--it was well worth it. Usually when I pick a cheap place I get this horrible sinking feeling in the middle of the haircut like oh no...I shoulda forked out the big bucks! But this place was a good find! Cleanliness-wise, it is true that the back of the salon where hair is washed is kinda messy. But it didn't squick me out. Hours: M-S 10-7, Sun 10-6. read more

Hair: Let me tell you, the lady gave me such a beautiful clean hair look. I was beyond excited about my new hair. I would def. recommend it to everyone. I was looking for a clean trim and showed some of the hair inspiration and she nailed it. Waxing: A little pricey for me but they get the work done like a pro. Two caveats: I've never gotten anything other than a haircut here and I always get it short and simple. So to any everyone who's looking for a mani-pedi, waxing, or prom hair, I can't really help you. But, if you are looking for a good, reasonably-priced haircut, Gina is definitely your gal. I've been going here since 2006, when I took the plunge and opted for an even remotely stylish haircut. I've lost track of how many visits I've paid to Lan Salon, and the few times I strayed from Lan were nothing but mistakes. Gina is very meticulous and doesn't miss a single detail of my head. Whether it's cleaning up the area behind my ears, grooming my neckline, or thinning out my sideburns, she's on it. The icing on the cake is when she rinses out my hair before the final drying and styling. I still prefer to go home and shampoo out any remaining fuzz; but if ever I have to hit the town right after my haircut, I know Gina's got me covered. I've brought friends to Gina and they leave looking even better than me. She's even fixed hair mutilated by over-confident attempts at self-styling. After searching from Yelp, I found this salon and decided to come here. ^^ This salon is busy every day. Even though no appointment is required, but since there are many customers every day, it's better to make an appointment to avoid a long waiting time xD I got my hair cut and also colored for the first time (Yep, I've never colored my hair before :s). I'm very satisfied with the result. =) The staffs, the one who cut my hair (Gina) and washed my hair, are very nice and friendly~ They gave me lemon cookies and hot tea while waiting for my hair coloring to get done (with my head under the heater or whatever that equipment is called lol). I love it here! (I've only had manicures with them and they do a bomb job!) I have been in Berkeley for about 4 years now and have struggled to find a salon that I fully trust either because they don't follow the sanitation laws or because they are carefree about their work and do not produce quality work. I have never felt any of those things here! I honestly found this place by luck as I walking on University. In general I have found that the salon has a good flow of people and they do an amazing job with seating you very quickly. { SANITATION } I am very picky about salons and whether I return or not because A LOT of salons do not follow the regulated salon safety guidelines. LAN Beauty Salon cleans everything and makes sure the station is all clean prior to your seating. They do not share any used tools between clients and take all the dirty tools to the back to sanitize. (If you go to the back you can see where the tools are cleaned.) They have disposable mini supplies for each client that are thrown out after use. { ACRYLIC REMOVAL } I first walked in to remove my old acrylic nails that I got done at another Berkeley salon, the other salon did an awful job and I needed then off ASAP. I've removed acrylic before and it was an awful experience, they LITERALLY ripped them off and I was scared to ever remove them. LAN Beauty Salon removed them painlessly; they soaked my nails in acetone until it degraded the acrylic and it could be easily wiped off. Once they were removed they even shaped them after without extra charge! { GEL MANICURE } I've had multiple gel manicures here and the color stays on a REALLY long time. Currently finishing my third week with the current manicure and there is no signs of lifting or peeling. They do a really good job with making sure you are extremely happy with your color and even try different colors out on your nail before they start the gel polish treatment. Been here twice and was satisfied both times. I'm real iffy when it comes to people cutting my hair and I found this place was pretty good. I had long hair (surfer's type) and wanted to get it trimmed. The lady, forgot her name, did a good job. I came back a few months later (which was a few weeks ago) and now that I have shorter hair, the same lady from before, cut my hair. Again, she did a pretty good job. It's not like all the other hair salons I've mentioned on here but it's not bad. They do a decent job and for only $15 (price raised) it's worth it. Went in for a pedicure with two other people...empty, however, still took over 30 mins for someone to start on me (we weren't informed of this). Pedicure was very very basic--no massage at all, but the massage chairs were nice. For it to be just a soak, rubbing lotion in, and polish, it was not worth $23, but it was convenient. I definitely have had way better and twice as much for just a few bucks more. read more

Please note, this review is only for the nail services and general salon condition. I took advantage of a free 1/2-hour while in Berkeley to finally get a long-overdue pedicure. Although the final product looked good the person servicing me was very slow... I was in the salon for about 45min and that was even with me only giving the nail polish 5 mins to dry since I was running super late at that point... To sum it up: Pros: Cheap, weren't busy when I stopped by on a Thurs night, clean and updated looking interior Cons: Slow service and the place smelled TERRIBLE - kind of like a sewer leak... I went to get a haircut, I was infront of the mirror, sitting down when I explained how short I wanted it to be. I wanted my hair washed so she told me to get up and I started walking to the washing station. During my walk, she told me to stop (I thought she wanted to fix the cutting cape she put on me... she cut my hair... all of it from behind me while I was standing up) She said something before she cut my hair but I couldn't listen she was wearing a mask. I was so shocked when she held my bundle of hair right infront of my eyes. I stayed calm, I was about to cry but I waited until she washed my hair and blow dry it (I thought it would look longer dry) NO. It was way shorter than what I intended it to be. Her reason for cutting my hair standing up on the way to the wash station was "your hair was dry you don't need it anyway" "it will be hard to comb if you have that long hair" but that was still my hair. As a Salon hair stylist would you do this to your clients? I have never had a hair cut this way. It was always infront of the mirror, sitting down when my hair stylist would confirm me "is this the length you want" before cutting. I know this place was not as exquisite as other salon, but I didn't mind the money I was in the area and I wanted to give this salon the benefit of the doubt. Shouldn't have done that In reply to lan: I didn't say anything after you cut my hair because I was in shocked. I wanted to believe my hair was cut to the shortness that I asked. It took me 1 year to grow out my hair and having it chopped held up by your hand infront of my eyes scarred me. This event was so traumatic I couldn't think of going back into a salon. I was too emotional, and i was crying because of my hair when I wanted to pay I couldn't bare looking at you. What is your venmo? Let me pay. It took me a few days to kind of be okay. I can ask all the hair stylist in the bay area and none of them will condone how you cut my hair. I have never seen any hair stylist doing that. Update: Lan is still denying her malpractice. My review was in fact about how your malpractice caused me trauma. You want me to post a picture of my hair? This isn't about that. I keep repeating this to her again and again. It isn't about the hair, Even though I am sad that I got my hair chopped off it will grow back. BUT it is about HOW it was chopped off. Any bay area hair stylist will reason with me on this. It is better to have your hair cut by someone who knows what they are doing than it is to give your mom a pair of clippers and a salad bowl. $12 hair cuts and a seven dollar tips makes an extremely motivated cosmetologist do their best all over ones scalp. I think it is a great thing when service quality stays high and prices don't inflate. read more

Excellent service. And complete beauty care. I have used their services for over 5 years now. Coloring my hair at least 4 times a year, sometimes getting highlights. My hair looks very healthy and I always get compliments on the color and cut. The results are comparable to expensive salons. Lan's technique in color is great. Also they do a great job on waxing and eye brow shaping. As for the mani/pedicure concerns it is also the best of the area. My pedicure lasts for over 2 weeks as freshly applied, and my nails are healthy. read more

It's harder than you'd think to find a decent nail salon, especially one within walking distance from work. The girls at Lan are awesome, from manis to pedis to waxing - they are good at it all. My manicures are always great and they last longer than any other salon I've ever been to. Whenever I'm there, there are at least 4 or 5 people who come in for haircuts, and from what I can see in the other reviews, it looks like a great place to get one. Love! read more

I love Gina!! She is so great with hair and very funny to talk to. I lived in the Bay Area and went to her for about 3-4 years. Pre-visit: They are always accommodating with scheduling. I can get a same day appointment if I call early in the day. Visit: The staff is always friendly when you walk in. Gina is very meticulous and will give you exactly what you want. Also she has an amazing memory so after my first visit she would remember me and my hair cuts and always was consistent in giving me they look I wanted. Also appreciate that they wash and rinse my hair and gave me and mini head scrub/massage. As a guy, most places usually ignore you since our hair is short and skip the head washing but not Gina! I just love everything about this place. It is also very cheap! My cut was only $15 but Gina was so good I was giving her a 100% tip. Really recommend it for men haircuts! read more

I desperately needed a haircut before Chinese New Years and Lan Beauty Salon popped right up on my Yelp app. After reading a few rave reviews, I decided to make an appointment to see Gina. Gina was very sweet and so nice to spend time with! She asked me what I wanted and the best part was that she suggested some ideas too. She really made sure that I liked my haircut, which I appreciated. I came in with very long (too long) hair and now I have very nice layers (and she kept the length!) I really like my haircut and will definitely be seeing Gina again soon. And my lovely haircut was only $23! read more

I got a haircut from Gina this week. After reading the reviews on Yelp it was looking forward to it. Well I needed was a simple trim. I have a straight hair that is usually easy to cut and style. I wanted to wait until I got home and wash my hair and style date for a couple days before reviewing the haircut. It does not play well even when I blow dry or use a flat tire. Do you know also cut in a strange fringe that I did not request on one side. I did not ask for it and it's really annoying. Have to wait until it grows out :/ Gina was really nice and I liked her. Maybe I need to go in with more specific instructions if I go back. read more

I recommend making an apt before coming here as it gets busy. I also recommend Gina as a hairstylist. I'm sure the others are just as good, but Gina has been my go-to for the last couple years. She goes out of her way to do a precise cut. Coming from someone who's brothers own barber shops in San Diego, I can say that she has a very keen eye. She's also extremely personable. Two needed qualities of a good hair stylist. It's $15 for a cut, but I usually leave $20. I recent further away and tried two other hair stylists. One did a lousy job. Once my hair dried it was very uneven and not very thoroughly. My second cut charged me $40 for a cut similar to that of Lan Salon. I figured wasn't worth it. The ladies here are all nice, smiling and personable. I like to get my nails done here; they always look clean and well-shaped. The ladies tidy up my cuticles very well too. I hope to try something more bold one of these days, but for now I stick to the basic gel colors. My nails dry quickly, and I can put on my shoes and handle things without a wait. My best eyebrow wax was done here!!! I loved how much time (20 mins) she took to shape my eyebrows. It shows she cares! Out of the maybe 10+ waxers I've been to the past few years, Gina is the absolute best! She's the only waxer that actually realizes 1/2 of my eyebrow is coarse, while the other is sparse. Other waxers just zoom through and pretend my eyebrow is uniform. She gave me the perfect arch, and I will be back. I also received a haircut for my bangs. I received a $60 haircut once (not here), and they just swooped it to the side and pretended like it was nothing. But here, they actually care about how it looks against your face. And at the proper length. I asked for long side bangs and I was so sad when they grew out. I tried going elsewhere to re-cut them, but they weren't the same. :( I'm sad I don't live in the area, but whenever I am, I always make time to visit. I go there quite often, as it is my go to place for a cut. They cut my hair very well, and the owners daughter is a very expensive stylist at a known salon in San Francisco. She charges $15 for men, $25-35 for women? When infact her rates in San Francisco are 70+. I highly recommend this place, it's family owned and although their english speaking skills may not be of big importance to you, the quality of the haircuts are wonderful! I highly recommend this place! PS.. tell them what you want to your hair, and keep communicating with them, as although they have a vision, they prefer a very detail oriented customer! Go to Gina! I was a bit nervous because you never know of Berkeley salons. However Gina is a pro. She is also very friendly. I walked right in and was able to get it cut with barely I wait. I have really long hair and a got long layers and side swept bangs. It looks great. She is very careful and makes sure she does a great job everytime. It only cost $25. Honestly, this was probably the best manicure I've ever gotten in Berkeley. I went to a pricier salon on Solano right before a trip in December. Gel mani cost over 30$ and chipped the next day at the airport. Was so disappointed in the quality of the work as well as the price. Was walking past LAN and thought why not they can't be any worse right? Turns out they were the BEST. They took their time shaping and cutting my nails till they were perfect and even. The polish was applied so evenly and delicately that you can't even see any of my nail near my cuticles. They were so kind and professional. Over the years it just became a one stop shop for a mini half day of self pampering and mini makeover. I've stopped by this place for a haircut Sunday evening ~5pm. I went to Maxi hair salon before but didn't like the cut I got there so was looking for a new place for hcs. They employees were polite and friendly. I had to wait only 15 minutes as there were two other people getting their hair trimmed, which for a walk-in is reasonable. I got my hair cut by a Vietnamese guy, can't recall his name now. He was one of the few people who cut my hair the way I wanted it. I haven't cut my hair in 6 months and often when I wait that long the hair stylist doesn't quite know what to do with a knop of unruly blonde hair and usually needs additional directions and readjustments. But this guy got it right. It was close to closing time and they had no other customers, so he seemed a bit bored put in extra effort into getting it perfect. I got a compliment on my hair about an hour later after walking out :) The cut for women was $20. If you don't want to wait long as a walk-in, just don't go there at peak hours. read more

Didn't have to make an appointment or wait very long, but I was a little sketched out by the time I had handed my nails over for a Shellac manicure. The last two times I had it done in much nicer salons. This place looks like it could use a thorough clean. I also noticed the tools were in a plastic box, not being removed from a fresh sanitized sleeve. I asked if they cleaned their tools between clients and what the process was like. Don't know if I believed them. Also, they soaked my hands in acetone for quite a while. I had to pull them out myself and recommend to the girl that filing the surface first would help remove the old gel. *sigh* I'm just terrified of getting my nails done ever again and hope that they really did clean their tools the way they claim they did.. read more
