I booked a 45-min back treatment with Shannon, and the experience could not be even more perfect. The spa/clinic was light-filled with minimal aesthetics. Luckily their location was not terrible to find, as there was ample street parking. When I walked in, the warm and friendly receptionist greeted and made me feel right at home. Throughout my visit, Shannon shared me with her wealth of knowledge of the various AHAs as well as retinoid products. I love that we were able to geek out on which products to use to achieve brightening effects. She also made some recommendations based on my skin type such as mandelic acid instead of glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation. Without trying to oversell me her products, she suggested that I try over-the-counter Nizoral antifungal wash for possible white-heads that pop up occasionally as well as prescription tretinoin since I had a few hyperpigmented spots that I wanted to fade/brighten. Given it was my first time there, she did allow me to use my credit card to pay but informed me that she only accepted cash or checks to help keep operating costs down. Since my back issues were minor based on her assessment, I did not schedule a return visit. I've so glad I found this place. Shout out to Angelica who has really made a difference! I used to have really clear skin, only use water to wash my face every morning/night, and be able to eat anything without having breakouts. Since about 2 years ago my skin took a complete turn. I even used Proactiv for a few months but my skin got worse. I've been following my face routine every morning and night since I became a client back in November 2021. Since I've been a client here, my skin has cleared up so much and it's only been about 3 months! I also had to make some sacrifices to my diet but the sacrifice is definitely worth it. I'm a fan of cheese and dairy and I'm proud to admit I've been almost dairy free for 2 months (never thought I could do it!) and it proves that the type of food I eat really makes a huge difference. I get 1-2 breakouts every so often but it's no where near to how my skin looked before. This place is amazing! I've been going to Studio Abasi consistently for a few years now and truly nothing has worked better for my skin!!! I've suffered from acne for so long and nothing helped. I've tried several dermatologists, medications, topical creams, etc etc and NOTHING has worked like Studio Abasi. Having acne really lowered my self confidence. I used to wear a full face of make up every day (literally every day). Now I only wear make up when I want to and not because I feel like I need to cover up my face! I also finally feel comfortable looking in a mirror again and like what I see; I used to hate how I looked so much I could never look at my face in a mirror. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with this clinic/ spa. I was treated by Angelica, who is a very nice lady, however the first treatment was very expensive, and she said that it would be the most expensive visit because I would have to buy all the products for my skin from them. With agreeing to the skin regimen, they promised that there would be improvement over time, and the next appointments would be cheaper. Angelica also made it very clear that she would be very responsive about any questions or updates on how my skin was reacting to the products I bought from them. I understand that it would take some time for my skin to adjust to the new regimen, however with each appointment, Angelica would prescribe new products that were almost just as pricey as the first appointment ($350-$450). Furthermore, after my 3rd treatment of buying new products, my skin reacted very badly and I completely broke out all over my face with red dots and acne. When I reached out to Angelica via email, I received no response from her as promised. This was very frustrating because although I did agree to go through a process of working on my skin, I don't believe it should take upwards to a thousand dollars and a disfiguring skin reaction in order to receive the correct treatment. With such expensive treatments, I expected high standards of what the session included. However, there were many instances that the service was not up to my standards of any skin or body treatments. For example, the table used to do the treatments on was a flat table- there was no neck rest or leg rest included. The first treatment Angelica did place a pad under my neck and legs, however the cloth pads were not covered and therefor clearly not sanitary from the last clients, and after the first treatment there was no pads given for me to use, and lying flat on the table was very uncomfortable for the duration of the treatment. This is a very simple standard of a skin service, and the lack of attention to detail seemed to be unprofessional and not worth the money. For the treatments, I was told by Angelica that she does not use a steamer or any type of application to open the pores before extractions. I came in for an acne breakout, and after multiple treatments of extractions, my skin was left bumpy and irritated, with more acne coming back in the same spots. I have yet to see any evidence supporting that a LACK of steam actually helps to open the pores (as told to me by Angelica). Lastly, the treatments themselves were sessions of one hour to -45 minutes. However, 2 of the 3 sessions I booked, even though I arrived on time, the previous clients appointments ate into my own appointment time, and they facialist did not extend my session to compensate. Then, the first 15 or so minutes of the appointments was just discussion about my skin, and looking though a magnifying glass. Usually a skin treatment adds on extra time to examine the skin. The actual amount of time that Angelica did actual treatment on my skin was about 30 minutes or less. After 3 sessions, I was very frustrated that I was paying such a large amount for only 30 minutes of treatment. The lack of care for my time and what I am paying for in terms of services is very unprofessional. After all my experiences there, I would say that Studio Abasi disappointed me with their promises of skin recovery that did not work for me, and with a promise of easy communication and quick response for skin questions, which I was not responded to. As well, I would say the overall message that if you pay a lot the first time, and the further times would be cheaper and help your skin, proved to be untrue. It was the opposite for me- each appointment as expensive as the last, and there was no improvement of my skin over 3 months. After I had the terrible reaction to the products and service with my 4th treatment, I went to Sundhari Spa on solano ave in Albany, and immediately with the first treatment they were able to reverse the damage done to my skin by Studio Abasi, clearing up all my red acne and inflammation, proving that with the right treatment and products, it was not my skin that was the problem, it was the treatments and products from Studio Abasi that caused my reaction. I went in for acne, and came out with worse acne. I highly recommend Sundhari Spa on Solano Ave for any skin and body needs, with great prices!! read more

This place has completely turned my skin and self-esteem around. For years I struggled with intense hormonal acne. As a breast cancer survivor, I was not allowed to be on birth control anymore - one of the few things that helped clear the acne. I tried all sorts of chemical peels, products, and diets, and saw all kinds of dermatologists. All had little to no positive impact. So, naturally, I assumed it would be the same here - I just had little hope. But wow oh wow was I wrong. They don't just work on your skin but they give you instructions on how to heal and revitalize your skin from the inside out. With my regular visits and extractions, instructions on how to change my diet, shampoo, etc regiment in addition to their amazing products (I swear these wonderful people are scientists), my skin nearly completely cleared up. My most recent facial started with a first ever case of rosacea. Shannon was able to use products that helped alleviate this issue and in two days, skin was back to normal. This review is not for Shannon (the owner), but for the esthesian Beza. I booked the weekly acne treatment online as I was planning to come here weekly to get my new acne treated. Before I came here, the front desk called me if I was planning to buy the full set of products they had. I said I wouldn't know until I'd been seen by the esthetician to see if I needed to. I would let the professionals tell me if I need to. And the front desk said he would let the esthetician know to assess skin first. I drove 1 hr here due to crash and construction, I was 10 mins late. The esthetician Beta welcomed me and immediately started the process with cleansing. She didn't do any assessment or recommendations. She started to explain that I couldn't do acne treatment until I would be committed to buy the full set of products they had. I understand the reason they do this is to guarantee the result. However she didn't ask me if I would like to buy or not, if I want to do acne treatment or not, then directly started with hydration treatment. This is not I came here for with 1 hr drive. She told me she didn't have time for any other treatment today that I was only booked for 30 mins. Then you should have told me when you call me ahead or before you started the process! The hydration treatment is only a general cleansing, a light extraction(very light) and a hydration mask. That is it. Not even a product applied during or after the mask. Then I was charged $110 which I thought was $95 with fair facial treatment and also given I was planning to do weekly and buy their products. I am so disappointed as they rushed to get the job done without really caring what the customer really wanted, not even care about their skin, and why they came here. I missed the time when I first came to Shannon that she cared about my skin and would recommend things not just for money. With this price, the way they deal the service, I would not come again. It is not worth it. UPDATE: this was due to a miscommunication that the front desk and the esthetician got confused with the treatment i booked online and they were still relatively new to the process and service. This review is very, very long overdue, and I will say that Studio Abasi has transformed my skin, and with that, my life. I suffered from forehead breakouts ever since I was in middle school, and I cycled through various drugstore and high-end products, visited multiple dermatologists' offices, and got facials regularly in high school to no avail. When I first came to college more than three years ago, I found Studio Abasi while trying to locate a new place for regular facials. I liked how Studio Abasi had a very comprehensive intake form that asked about diet and lifestyle on top of products used, which was something that the other facial locations I went to had not asked me about, and they gave me a rundown of how acne developed on the skin. When Shannon examined my skin, she told me that the bumps on my forehead were a fungal infection called malassezia folliculitis and not acne, which I had never heard of before. It made sense why a lot of acne products weren't working on my skin long-term. She also advised me to cut some foods (e.g. dairy) from my diet, as they can also be contributors to breakouts. Shannon then gave me some products from their own line to use at home, and they worked better for my skin than some professional-grade products that I had bought from other spas. I would say my favorites were the green tea cleanser and the mandelic acid serum, but I wasn't personally a big fan of the restore hydrating serum. With that being said, my folliculitis has virtually disappeared with the exception of a few occasional breakouts, which has definitely boosted my confidence. I also feel like Shannon truly cares about me and my experience; she asks how I'm really doing every time and tells me about her life as well. Proactive, benzoyl peroxide, doxycycline, and Accutane never worked for me and moderately severe acne plagued me since high school. I skipped junior and senior prom because I couldn't think about seeing how the photos would turn out. If I'd known about Studio Abasi, I'd probably have photos to look back on rather than regret. Suffice to say that Studio Abasi's routine isn't easy since it requires discipline and I had none. I wasn't perfect with the routine, but I told myself to just get 1% better every week. I'm still not perfect, I'm probably only 75% consistent even after 9 months of treatment. And yet, my face has changed 98%. I have very tiny amounts of acne now and I'd probably have none if I just listened to my skin coach, Angelica. Even when you fail to be consistent (which I've done for weeks at a time). Get up. Location/Parking:: There is no sign that says where the place is located, but when you make your appointment they will send you an email with details about where they are located. To best explain it though, it is located on Durant Ave and you can easily get street parking which is convenient. It is located in a big tall "cathedral" looking building and to get in you have to press this intercom to let the person know that you are coming in for an appointment at Studio Abasi. It is located on the second floor and easy to find since they have signs once you're inside. Interior:: Since they have the whole second floor it's pretty nice. You check in at the front telling them who you are in for and what time your appointment is. You wait outside where they have seats for those waiting and overall a very nice relaxing environment. Once you are called into your appointment, the interior of all the rooms are very nice, clean, and has a very calming environment. Everyone that works there is really nice and welcoming too which is a plus! Service:: I used to come here and was helped by Shannon; however I decided to try someone out and so this time I received waxing from Priscilla. The amazing thing is that while I was waiting for my appointment, Shannon recognized me even though I haven't been in for a couple years so I felt pretty surprised, but happy at the same time. One would think that getting waxed is intimidating and scary, but honestly the people that work there understand your fears and try their best to calm your nerves. Priscilla was really kind, welcoming, and great to help ease your fears. She kept talking to me to help keep my mind off of what was going on which was awesome. She also understood some of the pain I felt and tried to accommodate for anything that I was feeling. In my review I wrote about feeling treated disrespectfully and here you go again--so, you do realize you've proven my point? (Though I do apologize for incorrectly referring to this place as a "spa". That was truly awful of me.) Original review: Who wouldn't be over the moon to find a 5 star reviewed spa within walking distance of home? I was hardwired to love this place before I even walked through their doors. I'm not only disappointed; I'm genuinely offended. If I'm going to spend just under $200 (including tip) for a 75 minute facial treatment at a spa I'm going to expect certain things: Competent staff A genuinely pleasant experience Some modicum of change, even illusory, in my skin. Here's what I got: Placed in a noisy room right next to the reception desk where I could hear every word being exchanged including periodic shrill laughter. Extractions without any attempt to open my pores before hand (and, yes, it's more uncomfortable than it sounds). The sound of my esthetician typing away on the desktop and rummaging through supplies while we waited for my mask to dry. A sharp electrical shock applied to my face when the esthetician failed to test the maximum strength setting on her hand before applying it to my face. When I think of all the little things the spa could have done--but didn't--to anticipate and address these things I feel frustrated and disrespected. I can't believe how much I paid to be treated like this. Shannon deserves all the stars in the sky for how amazing she is. I really don't think there's anyone else in the world that does what she does. Where to begin? First, and most importantly, she's a miracle worker and is truly an expert in clearing skin. After years of thinking my skin issues were "hormonal" or trying different products and diets without any consistent results, I finally found Shannon and had clear skin within a few months. Secondly, Shannon is brilliant and actually develops and formulates her own products. She's essentially a scientist, but because she's passionate about working directly with clients and loves helping people clear their skin, she sees the precise results of her products and continues to adjust her formulations over time. No dermatologist or traditional chemist would actually see the effects of their prescriptions or formulations to the extent that Shannon does, because she works closely with her clients long-term. And she has different products for different skin types, so she will also give you exactly what your skin needs, and continue to adjust this for you if/when needed. Next, Shannon helped me realize that sugar and dairy are acne triggers for me (she also said to avoid peanuts, chocolate, and seaweed, and certain supplements). Since cutting that stuff out, I almost never have breakouts. Shannon will also let you know if your makeup has pore-clogging ingredients, so you can make sure your products aren't working against you. She also makes her own mineral makeup that is custom-blended to match your skin tone! It's all I use now and I love it. Last, Shannon is just a lovely, inspiring, strong, beautiful person. She's brilliant, kind, and caring. I'm grateful for all her help with my skin (it's life-changing to have clear skin after so many years of struggling with breakouts), and I'm grateful to know someone as passionate and badass as she is. I've been struggling with acne since I was 13. Previously, I went to a different place that focuses on acne, and I did get clear. However, I was left with a bad chemical peel burn that took months to go away... and the acne came back. I found Studio Abasi last year around October and immediately decided to book an appointment. My esthetician Angelica has been amazing! I've been sticking to the regimen and have decreased my sugar and salt intake (my biggest dietary problem). Although I still have my setbacks and eat sweets from time to time, I'm so impressed on how much my skin has changed! I'm finally confident enough to go out without putting on face makeup. This is long overdue. I came here a handful of times when I first moved to Oakland and it was called Studio Abassi. I've been on accutane twice, suffered with adult acne seasonally, so this place was attractive to me right off the bat. I'm not new to treatment plans, suggestions, or approaches to managing acne. I had a few acne focused facials (I think these were just custom facials based on my skin) and they were just OK. Extractions weren't thorough and I had to push some of them through the times I went the next day. This was very disappointing. I was not treated by Shannon and I can't remember who did my facials but it was underwhelming. The estheticians didn't feel connected to the session and were often distant and snarky. I also don't need or want to be pushed to buy a new line of acne treatment it's not something I believe in or want to do. I was more keen on starting a routine on extractions, steam, exfoliating during facials and willing to spend the $$ but it just felt like they were giving me an all or nothing option with the products. As in, well if you don't start the product line then none of this makes sense to do long term. I don't agree with that approach, my skin at that time wasn't even bad. I had a few deeper nodules on my chin but otherwise was wanting to manage my skin and look less congested by way of extractions from a professional every few months. The whole experience was weird and transactional. Wanting to share my experience in hopes that it helps others because adult acne & being a woman are just tough! I have tried $10,000+ worth of skincare products in my life targeting acne. I have been on doxycycline, minocycline, spirolactone, birth control, 2 rounds of accutane, facials, laser treatments, and etc. The list can go on and on. I've only done 2 facials here before I moved to Los Angeles over a year ago. However, I felt so safe and knew I could trust them with my skin from the first moment. I'll be honest, I've tried to switch to different products while in LA. I wanted to find a new skincare clinic and products that was easier to access. However, nothing compares to their products. My only regret in life is that I didn't find their products earlier. Please come here and give them a chance to assess your skin and invest in their products. Let's just say there's a reason for all of these 5-star reviews. Shannon is awesome. Facials. Waxing. Makeup Application. Sunless Tanning. She does it all. And she does it all exceptionally, from her lovely little space located inside the gorgeous Berkeley City Club (parking can be a bitch, but hey, that's Berkeley). The thing I love about Shannon (ok, so it's one of many things) is that she is incredibly knowledgeable, and is so focused on long-term, lasting results. She covers all the bases during her consultations, from your medical history, to dietary triggers, to actually investigating your current products to see if they contain contraindicated ingredients (who takes the time to do that sort of research? seriously awesome.). If you're wanting a frou-frou facial where you're going to be surrounded by scented candles and anointed with essential oils, warm neck wraps, fairy dust and massaged for an hour with unicorn tears...you should probably stick with a place like an Aveda salon. But if you want beautiful-skin-boot-camp, with a minimum of products (none of which Shannon is going to give you some hard sell about), you are in the best of hands. She has totally educated me and whipped my ass into shape, and I love her for it. Not to mention her flawless waxing skills! I'll never go anywhere else. read more
