What to expect: Chic Salon is the very definition of "small business". I think it only has two rooms. The counters are right next to the windows, so it might feel a little awkward sitting there getting pampered while you can still hear and see people walking on Shattuck. It's on the same block as Guerilla Cafe and Crepevine, so street parking is pretty full even in the morning. Come a little earlier just in case you end up circling the block. Anyway, onto the important part: I just got a wonderful manicure and pedicure from Sophia. She is so careful and quick at the same time, especially while trimming my eponychium. She makes tiny mistakes now and then, but she notices and fixes them right away. (Side note: she uses a desk fan to dry your nails. It's so adorable.) Expect her to ask you if you want add-ons. You can be honest and say no, but they're pretty hard to turn down because everything here is so affordable. I said yes to the pedi and nail design, even though I came in wearing boots. Thankfully she had a stockpile of disposable sandals that she gives away for free. Honestly, it's not the best mani/pedi I've ever gotten, but it comes pretty freaking close! My nails look super cute, and I could not have done a better job myself. In total it was $40, plus your choice in tip and however much 1.5 hrs of parking costs. Conclusion: I have to start coming here more regularly! The manicures are affordable and you will get beautiful results. However, the awkward location and interior setup will take some getting used to. read more

Got a trim (1.5 inches off) in 40 minutes for $30 including tip. The lady (and I wish I got her name) was very nice and accommodating. She's precise and careful, having spent the first 10 minutes or so partitioning my hair. I was worried that the haircut would take a while at that rate, but she was done very efficiently, and had time to blow dry and straighten my hair too. This place is right around the block from me so I think maybe I've found my go-to place for haircuts. I like that it's affordable and has an easy-going atmosphere. I have hair on the thinner side, but I noticed she does too, so coming here felt like a good match. I'll be back! read more

I have been looking for a "regular" place to get my nails done...I thought I did once when I went to one particular place on Shattuck and University...I think but I was very disappointed and almost gave up searching for a nail place in Berkeley. Period. However, all did change after going to Tuyen at Chic Salon: - She took the time to attend to my nails - The place is VERY clean! (a HUGE must!) - Tuyen is very friendly and listens to what the consumer wants * She is very sweet and takes the time to get to know you. * Tuyen is new to the Berkeley area and so far, she is AWESOME! - Nails are done at a decent price. My manicure only cost me $12.00 w/ hand massage! Yay! -This is a place that will want me to come back for another mani/pedi when I need one with Tuyen! Tuyen is seriously the best manicurist/esthetician you will find in North Berkeley with excellent and careful nail work without eating your wallet (especially for us girly Cal Bears looking for a monthly nail pampering session). I highly recommend Chic Salon if you want a cozy small town salon experiences. I had a manicure, pedicure, lip, and eye brow waxing all in one visit. I'm usually particular with my eyebrows and I had no complaints when Tuyen did it for me. Their prices are very reasonable its much cheaper then other salons. Tuyen took care of me and hooked me up! She gives students a 15% discount. All the ladies at the salons are extremely. If you want to use your credit/debit you won't be able to because it's a cash only business. I was looking for an affordable and high quality manicure/pedicure in my neighborhood (the gourmet ghetto), and I found it in Chic Salon. For $12 I got a manicure that included a hand massage, and for around $20 I gave my feet the same treatment. So, I pampered my hands and feet for less than $40! Sophia has been doing my nails for nearly 4 years. Far and away the best manicure and pedicure I've ever had. Her work is flawless, the pedicure looks brand new for 3-4 weeks (I'm pretty hard on my fingernails with dishes and gardening, so I'm not a good judge of how long it might last for others) The best part is that Sophia is a delight. Always warm and friendly. Most of her cleintele has been coming for years- and for good reason. Salon is not a particularly hip place so it's like stepping back in time a bit to an old-timely beauty shop- which is not a complaint. Feels pretty down home and welcoming. Ayten provides great threading services. I can get both eyebrows and upper lip threaded for under $20, and am always happy with the results. Ayten takes great care in doing a thorough and careful job in shaping brows. I have experienced other threading salons where clients are rushed in and out, but that is never the case at Chic. I'm always able to walk-in on Thursdays-Saturdays and have no wait, but Chic does do appointments. Definitely a great place to get threading done if you are in Berkeley! read more

Having newly moved to the area, I was in need of finding a new place for a hair cut. Going on Yelp recommendations and the indication that it was one of the cheaper places around without just being a buzz cut shaver job, I went. I showed up earlyish on a weekday morning, and there was nobody in the place. While this initially worried me, it was really only big enough for a client or two, so it's probably for the best. Not having an appointment was not a problem. I was thrilled with the cut that I got. As a guy, getting a decent haircut can be tricky since so many places either rush through it or aren't as comfortable. I got a great haircut for an average price, and was in and out with no wait or issues. Meant to write this review a while back when I first got the cut, so I'm forgetting some specifics now, but I'll definitely be back and won't have to worry about how things will turn out. read more

This review is for the hair cut. I normally very carefully about choosing a right hair salon. But I really needed a hair cut , and Chic Salon is the only one that doesnt require an appointment in my neighborhood, also it has pretty decent reviews. I decided to give it a try. But I dont think I will ever go back again. Fist off, the lady who did my hair was wearing several sweaters, so when I needed a hair wash her wet sleeve was rubbing all over my face. That was pretty awful. Second, I wouldn't expect such an outdated hair salon would charge people 35 dollars for a hair cut, 5 dollars additional for the shampoo ( well, she did offer me a discount since I am a "student", she charged me 25 dollars for the hair cut and another 5 dollars for shampoo). I don't understand why it only has one dollar sign. The hair cut itself didn't turn out great either. I had 10-dollar hair cut that was way better than this one. read more

Five stars are for Tuyen, who is no longer at Chic Salon, but at La Peluqueria at 1600 Shattuck. TUYEN IS THE BEST MANICURIST EVER. I will follow her around no matter where she ends up because I never have a better experience and manicure/pedicure than with her. She does impeccable work and is lovely to spend time with. And she's gentle and dear. (She left Chic Salon because the owner there started to ask her for FORTY PERCENT of her earnings as a "commission." I'm not sure that's even legal.) But the silver lining is that La Peluqueria is THE loveliest salon in Berkeley. It's beautiful and quiet and and sedate. It's not a manicure or hair cutting factory by any means. AND the proprietor, Patricia Lewis, is equally lovely, sells DevaCurl's NoPoo shampoo, and seems like a great stylist (she's cutting my hair next week, and I can't wait!) I started going to Chic a few months ago, when a friend told me about hair (and wallet) godsend, Wantana. For the amount I'd been stupidly paying at hip salons for a cut alone, I get a nice cute AND the best highlights ever! Plus, the shop is super mellow and down-to-earth. It's quiet and peaceful, and Wantana doesn't make you feel like you need to engage in small talk or be best friends. Wantana's the best value for money I've ever gotten for my hair. I got Wantana's phone number from a coworker whose hair always looks perfect. I have been coming to her for a year now and i am happy with the service. Just make you sure you know what you want and describe it clearly. this has worked for me. Wantana listens to you, respects your wishes about length, cut, perm size etc and does what you ask her. It is easy to schedule appointments with her, pricing is reasonable, and if you are not happy with something Wantana will do her very absolute best to fix it. I've been getting cuts and perms for now. I like that Wantana cares not to damage your hair when she works with it. I will continue coming to her and i do recommend her. I love finding killer hole-in-the-wall places of all kinds, and this place definitely is on the list. I called ahead, and they told me to come in. It's a no frills place, but the ladies there are SO ultra sweet and attentive. Kay checked in with me from the time I stepped into the salon until the second I stepped out. The haircut was good, she did exactly what I asked, and she made sure I was happy with what she was doing along the whole way. I had to ask for a shampoo, and I think they charged me extra, but it was worth it for the mini scalp/neck rub and the shampoo/condition/deep tx. For $30, well worth it. The two-star review below isn't really all that accurate, in my opinion - think the reviewer was expecting a little too much. Seriously, $30 for a shampoo and cut is cheap in my book, especially for a local mom/pop shop, if you don't want to have walk in and support a corporate chain like Supercuts. I think that reviewer should just go to Supercuts and shut the hell up. read more

Wanthana is the best. She's been cutting my hair for almost ten years. Every time I want the usual, I don't even have to describe it - she just cuts it right. If I do want something different, like when I recently started doing a hipster like undercut, she was able to figure it out from a few pictures I showed her on my phone and she did it right the first time. I stopped having my highlights done 9 years ago because I found it too high maintenance having the roots retouched every 5-6 weeks. Plus, the root growth was unattractive when it grew out. I had a consultation with Rebecca B. and mentioned I would like highlights again if it could be done so I would only need to get retouched a few times a year or let it grow back completely without the roots being obvious. I was very weary but Rebecca was patient and listened to all my concerns. She then went into detail about how she could accomplish what I wanted without putting pressure on me to get it done. We also spent time picking a color that would work with my natural color to achieve the low maintenance effect. After a couple of times working with Rebecca and asking about a million questions, I finally got it done and I'm so glad I did! The color we chose turned out beautiful; the highlights compliments my skin tone and my natural hair color. It's been two months and the roots blends in with the highlights so no root touch up needed.My hair is still shiny and healthy unlike the other times I had it highlighted which really dried out my hair.
