Long over-due recommendation for Tito @Moonshadow. I see Tito several times a year for my Cezanne (Formaldehyde-free) keratin smoothing treatment. He does a fantastic job that keeps me coming back (it's about 3 hrs for my long-ish, unruly frizzy hair) I also get a haircut (cool razor chop). The salon is clean and relaxing and Tito lets me zone out with a podcast, checking in when needed which I appreciate. I am shocked that Tito still has a job here. I am certain that the positive reviews about him are his friends. I had a smoothing treatment done from him and a haircut. I paid over 600 dollars. The smoothing treatment did not even last a couple of weeks and the haircut was very uneven. When I called him to get it fixed he scheduled and canceled on me twice. When I complained to the owner, she said he cancels on people all the time. If he cancels all the time, why is he still employed here? This is the worst salon experience I have had! read more

I started coming here back when I started as a student at Berkeley, and even though I've been living in San Francisco for almost 2 years now, I still keep coming back for Nadia!! I made an appointment with Sherry on May 3rd for June 10th because I needed to have my hair dyed on that exact date. I planned everything accordingly, took the day off from work and suddenly they cancelled my appointment on June 3rd. It was impossible to find a new appointment within a week and I couldn't get my hair done. I had no choice but to go to my friend's wedding without dyeing my hair. I was upset but there was nothing to do. I understood the previous situation and wanted to give this salon another chance and on October 6th I made an appointment with Tito for October 13th and took the day off from work and planned everything accordingly. -again... This morning I woke up early for my appointment that was supposed to be at 11am and I saw that they sent me an email at 7:30am saying my appointment was canceled. Tito texted me saying "we can reschedule". Really, can we?! I don't know if I'm being so sensitive but I have a life, a job, and things to plan. Canceling an appointment made a month in advance on the last week or the same day is not professional behavior and breaks trust. The reason I am writing such a long comment is to warn my other female friends. As a woman I know how important our hair is to us and I want to share with you that if your hair is really important to you I would suggest you do not trust this salon's appointments and find another salon. They can literally cancel your appointment at the last minute and you may feel really bad. read more

Saw Tito for a cezanne smoothing treatment with the understanding that it was NOT a straightening treatment. He said he'd done this multiple times on other clients with great results, and to expect results to last approximately 4-6 months. So went ahead with it (several hours, $550 +$100 tip) on my frizzy hair. Now it's 2 weeks later and frizz is back, so reached out to Tito about it. At first he sounded concerned - and offered to redo it. I provided a bunch of photos and info on what shampoo i was using (Olaplex no4). He comes back and says "it looks a lot less frizzy, It's not a straightener it's a frizz smoothing treatment. If you want me to do it again I have no problem doing it". I did not WANT a straightener but i did want frizz smoothing!! and why would i pay another $550 again for something he can't deliver? Bottom line to you stylists - don't over promise and give your clients an idea of REALISTIC results. and don't try to upsell products as a remedy for something that was a fail. 2 weeks?? read more

I should have read customer radclyffe M.'s January 2020 review because I had the same experience. I decided to make an appointment since I would be in Berkeley for the day. I had been a loyal customer of Moonshadow for years with a stylist named Susana (she has since moved on). Booked an appointment with Katerina. I arrived early and she was *starting* to curl a customer's hair right around the start time of my appointment. I gave it a bit. They didn't have anyone manning the desk so I mentioned to the stylist closest to me that I had a 1 pm appointment. I was told Katerina was running late and would be another 10 minutes. She came by to get me at 17 minutes late and at that point, I knew that I wasn't in the mood and wasn't likely to tip to the level of her work (I'm giving benefit of the doubt here that she is a good stylist, though at this point can't really say) and just asked if I could cancel. Also, parking in the area is parking meter or up to 2 hours and I didn't want to risk a ticket because they were running late. Moonshadow was a great salon a decade plus ago but something just seems really off. The salon was completely empty and even the other stylist who came in apologized to her waiting customer for being late, saying there was traffic. Maybe it's because it's summer and students are gone but this place felt like it had really lost the buzz that I remember from years before. read more

I tried Moonshadow for an overdue haircut and left satisfied and happy. JayDee was my stylist and took the time to understand my requests. My hair had grown pretty long and I wanted 3-4 inches off with layers and volume. It was easy to make an appointment on their website and my session was on a Monday noon so it was not very busy and there was street parking right outside. It took them only an hour to wash, cut, dry and style my hair. I live in SF where it's impossible to find stylists less than $100 so I thought this was reasonably priced at $75. I have been going to Tito for years. I routinely get highlights and a cut. The highlights always look so natural and grow out beautifully. My hair has always been frizzy, and he recommended that I get the Cezanne Karitin treatment. After getting the treatment, the frizz was gone for months, and my hair is so incredibly soft. I would definitely recommend this treatment, especially if you feel like you need to use heat on your hair for it to look good. Stylist did the exact opposite of what I asked. I specifically asked for a cut between shoulder and chin-length, with two layers to "piece out" my straight, fine (but abundant) hair, and instead she gave me a chin-length blunt cut. When I commented on that at the end of session, she simply stated "Oh, I decided to give you a blunt cut instead." I was dumbfounded. Because I am a people-pleasing dumb-fuck, I said thank you, it's nice, tipped her 20 percent, then left. I cried all the way home. There was no way to repair it anyway--the cut is way too short. I just have to live with it while it grows out. I HATE blunt cuts. :( read more

If you want good service and professionalism DO NOT go to this salon. I received a haircut by Tito, I ended up with a cut different from the photos I showed him. I continued to work with him to further explain what I was looking for, after an hour and a half I decided to give up. I was told that my hair was the wrong color and therefore the wrong texture for the cut. Huh??? The next day I called to speak to the owner letting him know I wasn't happy with my cut and I hoped to get it fixed. I was told to take it up with the stylist and there was nothing he could do. He then offered me a refund, not what I wanted but I said ok just to be done and move on. He asked me to hold, then got back on the phone and told me he would not be issuing me a refund. He just spoke to another stylist in the salon that said I got the exact cut I wanted. Wait? He didn't speak to Tito but some other stylist, what?? The other stylist, Sara, got on the phone and proceeded to lie, insult my intelligence, and was just plain rude. Not one of them ended up being helpful, kind, or customer service oriented. I got nothing but defensiveness and attitude. I'm moving on but just wanted to warn other people about the service problems at this place. read more

Finding a good hairdresser is hard, finding a great one is even harder. I had moved to the east bay but was spending time going to SF for a just-ok-hairdresser and was sick of it. That's when I researched and found Moonshadow, more importantly, Tito. I needed someone that wouldn't argue with me about my long term plan to grow my hair long (after many bad unwanted short a-line haircuts) and someone who KNEW hair color in their sleep. I hit a home run with Tito and just realized writing this review that I have been going to Tito for six years (for realz??). In six years I have only been canceled on once and had to wait a few minutes for my appointment start time only a few times. I love that I can online book my appointments too. It's been almost ten months since I've been to Moonshadow Salon, which is why I hesitate writing a review. But ultimately, my experience there was so awful, I think I *have* to share it. I had come in several times before for a Brazilian Blowout, and had noticed each time that the owner, who was my stylist, never washed my hair clean of the product and restyled it, but rather let me walk out with a head full of chemicals. I, because I am an idiot, didn't care, because I noticed this made my Brazilian last longer. So, I kept going to Moonshadow until one day I came in and decided I wanted highlights, and was completely honest about my hair's history. I was told this would be no problem. Long story short, Bill didn't compensate for the fact that my hair had been dyed previously and then had grown out about two inches, which I told him. So I ended up with extremely light, blonde roots and ginger hair down the rest of the shaft. Bill said this would even out when he applied the color. Not only was he wrong, but when he realized he was wrong and I told him I didn't like it, he said his next client had come in and he had to leave. He put a blowdryer in my hand, and (I suppose?) to his credit, agreed to fix it for free if I decided in a couple days that I didn't like it. Unfortunately, I was leaving to Ireland for a month the next day, and spent the whole time looking like some sort of freak trying, and failing, to fit in with their ginger population. So he went to attend to his next client, leaving me with soaking wet hair, which I attempted to blowdry because it was the middle of the Berkeley winter outside and I didn't want to get sick. His wife, also a stylist, came up and sort of looked at me sadly, but didn't offer to blow dry it for me. Eventually, because my hair is so thick, and I wasn't given any tools to at least separate the hair into sections, I gave up and took the bus home. My impression of Bill from his work and what he used to talk about is that he is more of a businessman now than a stylist. He owns several salons, wants to open a restaurant, and apparently has lost the value of individual customer service. I hesitated writing this review for so long because it truly gives me no pleasure to write bad things about a business, and especially an owner, but I wasted a lot of money and time on a service that I feel was not done adequately or respectfully- and with the plethora of salons in the Berkeley area, I think others would do well to learn from my mistakes and avoid this one. I had already driven over early on a Saturday morning for my appt. with Tito (first one) and after I had paid, parked and my appointment was 5 minutes away, they called to tell me he wouldn't be making it. Sorry, I have to write this. I think all the rave reviews about Tito are from his personal friends. In the end, he does what HE wants. We had a discussion about what I wanted. I loved his confidence. My hair wasn't in dire need of anything drastic, just a trim. I actually liked how it was growing out. I like to think I'm not that picky about my hair. The only thing I stressed was, "whatever you do, don't cut my bangs straight across." My hair looked fine when I left, but as soon as I got home and washed and styled it myself I realized he butchered the beautiful layers I had before. Now there was a big chunk just hanging on the side of my head. And my bangs, straight across. The bangs weren't atrocious, but it wasn't me. I'm not a 20 something hipster that wants to try and pull that off. Christine (I think that's her name-she's the only one that waxes there) was able to give me a lip and brow wax while I was there. I appreciated that she was able to see me on such short notice but she rushed and did a sloppy job. It barely looked like she did anything to my brows. I will be returning to my old Aveda salon down in LA when I go back down for a visit at the end of the month. (Glendal Salon Spa) I thought I should find a place in my new neighborhood, but I don't want to have to go through growing my hair out from a bad cut again.
