Sorry, I have to write this. I think all the rave reviews about Tito are from his personal friends. In the end, he does what HE wants. We had a discussion about what I wanted. I loved his confidence. My hair wasn't in dire need of anything drastic, just a trim. I actually liked how it was growing out. I like to think I'm not that picky about my hair. The only thing I stressed was, "whatever you do, don't cut my bangs straight across." My hair looked fine when I left, but as soon as I got home and washed and styled it myself I realized he butchered the beautiful layers I had before. Now there was a big chunk just hanging on the side of my head. And my bangs, straight across. The bangs weren't atrocious, but it wasn't me. I'm not a 20 something hipster that wants to try and pull that off. Christine (I think that's her name-she's the only one that waxes there) was able to give me a lip and brow wax while I was there. I appreciated that she was able to see me on such short notice but she rushed and did a sloppy job. It barely looked like she did anything to my brows. I will be returning to my old Aveda salon down in LA when I go back down for a visit at the end of the month. (Glendal Salon Spa) I thought I should find a place in my new neighborhood, but I don't want to have to go through growing my hair out from a bad cut again. I am reviewing Susanne Adler at Moonshadow. I have been going to her for about 4 years now. She is a great haircutter. I have curly hair and it's hard to find someone who not only knows how to work with it, but also LIKES to work with curly hair. I have so often had the experience where a haircutter blows dry my hair into frizzy "Big Hair" with lots of product and I rush home and wash it out. I was just there yesterday, and it wasn't as good as before. I left with fuzzy hair in the back, and she parted my hair on the wrong side without asking me, and sprayed and blowdried it that way. I guess it was my fault for zoning out during my haircut, but still! I had to rewet and restyle it when I got home. I was feeling sort of bad because when I went in I knew that I wanted to cheat on my hairstylist for the next haircut and try Elixir, which has great reviews and is much, much closer to my home (I now live in El Cerrito and Moonshadow is FAR), but now I don't feel bad at all. If Elixir is good and priced comparably, that's where I'll be going from now on for all my coifing needs. read more

I always get compliments on my haircut. Thanks in no small part to Tito. He gave me such a good cut, he really listened to what I wanted but also took initiative to tell me what would work best for my type of hair and what just wasn't a good idea (something we all need at sometime). I'm a wash n wear type of girl and the cut he gave me works well for that but also allows for a more sophisticated style for nights out on the town. Tito was also fun to talk to and sit with. For those who want to go to a hairstylist who knows what he's doing, but want to avoid the endless "so tell me about yourself" rambling that most hairstylists are notorious for, I suggest getting your hair done by Bill at Moonshadow. This guy knows all about hair...not just how to blow dry properly, but he's got it down to a science. What's more, if you want to do something dramatic, he'll sit you down and explain what he's going to do, how your hair will turn out, and be brutally honest on whether or not it will look as good on your hair texture as compared to others. Trust me, it's a lot better than hearing some other stylist say "oh trust me, you'll look super sexy girlfriend," and hating it afterward. This happened to me at La Tour salon (which is right across the street). I don't go there very often because the prices may be a bit high. It's not exactly eye-popping expensive, but not as cheap as Supercuts either. For the love of God, don't go there either... my friend went there once and they gave him a Milhouse haircut (from the Simpsons). read more

I do hair modeling in Los Angeles so I'm not afraid of going to new stylists. I was desperate for a cut before my big high school reunion up here in NoCal so I - gasp - paid money for a cut!!! Sara was recommended to me for an edgy short cut. She has an edgy short cut herself - I took this as a good sign, and I was not disappointed. I didn't have time to get colored so she had to work around my way-grown-out platinum blonde - not an easy task. Incidentally, I learned that Sara is also a master colorist who travels around training other colorists in her spare time. I really wish I'd had time to get my color done by her. Anyway, even with color workarounds, my haircut looked GREAT. It came out edgy but feminine and soft - a balance only the best stylists can strike. I think I should have looked at this salon's yelp page before I went here. I just wanted my hair washed & blow dried. I came in at 1pm & I spoke with a really nice what seemed to me as a receptionist when I made my appointment. I prepaid for my shampoo blow dry with Tito I believe. ($45) I came in at 1:50pm. I really liked the salon the vibe/ the stylists. I grabbed a magazine & sat down. I finished the magazine it was 2:15pm.... waited 5 more minutes then I stood up lol. I walked up to the desk I think one of the stylists sensed I was a little ticked off. Really nice he says he will text him so I sit back down. I finally at 2:35pm decide to leave because I didn't know when he was supposed to come in / I was a little disappointed that I wasn't told when he was actually coming in that day. It's all about Tito! I first came to Tito about a year ago after a long string of disappointing haircuts and 'meh' color. I was looking for an artist but all I had found were technicians. I wanted someone to whom I could give a few keywords (like 'edgy but classic', 'something that pops', 'soft and sexy', etc) who would then apply their artistic eye to my hair type and take it to the next level. Tito does all that, but at the same time he never forces his vision onto your hair. He tames my frizz into sexy and straight while still maintaining body and life, and gives me color that's current with a slight edge and pop but completely natural-looking. I have never received so many compliments on my hair as I have in the year or so I've been going to Tito! As for customer service... recently I had a very important photo shoot that I needed my hair to be perfect for. Tito actually offered to come in and open the salon up on a Sunday just to touch up my hair and make it perfect for my shoot. I recently moved and had the ugly task of finding a new doctor, dentist, etc, including a stylist. I had the same stylist previously for 12 years, so I was planning on going through a few different salons over a period of time before I found the "one." I walked into Moonshadow without an appointment and knowing nothing about the establishment. I only had to wait 10 minutes for Bill to get back from grabbing a coffee, and he happily obliged to give me a trim. He was really friendly and listened to my picky description of what I wanted. The whole time he was cutting my hair, he explained what he was doing and why. He even gave me some tips for strengthening my thin ends and those pesky little whispies up by my part. He took time to style my hair a bit with the blowdryer since I had a date that night. The kicker: he only charged me $40. Everywhere else in Rockridge I looked was charging $50-75. Basically I got a great price and great service from the owner himself, all without an appointment. I need not look further for my new hairdresser! This Salon is awesome. I've had my hair done by Katerina, Susanne, Bill and JD and my mom has had her haircut by Nadia. I know other people who get their hair done here and I know that you can't go wrong with any of the stylists. Stacie does great eyebrow waxing and Jennifer is in the back doing massages in her quiet studio. She is a very petite woman but I hear she is very strong and knows what she is doing. There is a price range, depending on which stylist you go with. Bill and Sherry are the owners and they tend to charge a little less than the rest of the stylists which is great because that's usually not the case at a nice salon like this one! Even the Aveda colorists who charge the most don't charge as much as other salons. You should call for pricing but the best way is to come in and have someone look at you hair. This is an upscale Salon with fabulous stylists, and without the expensive bill. I would definetley say that this is one of the best salons in Berkeley. Plus, I love Aveda :) read more

I have been here three times, got my haircut twice-both very good hair cuts by Katerina. However, if you are looking for a place where your time is respected you will be disappointed. The first time I went, I waited nearly 25 min to start my appointment. The next time I booked to be first customer of the day, however, stylist was late and we got started nearly 30 min late. Yesterday was the final straw-I again booked the first cut of the day-this time with a different stylist because Katerina was booked and I was desperate for a side/back trim. He never showed up. I was stood up. I got a shrug and half-assed "sorry" when I told the receptionist I would reschedule (after 25 min). I I won't reschedule. For people who have all the time in the world, this may be a great place-however, I find their lack of respect and not valuing the client's time to be bad business. read more

I am home. After two tragic losses of great hairstylists to random new careers (paint-your-own-pottery shop owner, dolphin trainer) and then a series of disasterous and completely unsatisfactory haircuts at other salons, I called Moonshadow. Here's the thing: I am ready - no I NEED - to make a commitment to a hair salon and ONE stylist. So, I called Moonshadow - mainly because of its proximity to my home. I talked to the receptionist and explained my hair...she chose Jay Dee as my stylist and fit me in for an appointment the next day. Well, that day was today and I am ecstatic to say that I have made a stylist commitment! Jay Dee really listened to me and throughly examined my hair before giving me a killer scalp massage. He respected my wish not to have any product in my hair, and then proceeded to cut, consider, and consult throughout the appointment. I walked out of there with hair I absolutely love and got three compliments from complete strangers in the afternoon. Also, my husband really thinks it looks good. (He's hot.) I live just a few blocks from this place, but started going when I had to drive to get here and came via a recommendation. I've been thrilled with it from the first visit two years ago. I've tried everything from cuts and highlights to product purchases and even the massage therapist, Jennifer. Everything is great and I've loved every cut. I've got long, thick hair, so sometimes stylists either just want to add boring layers, or cut it all off. If you like a dark room, you may not like Jennifer's massage room. However, she really knows her stuff and listens to what you want. For instance, I don't like deep tissue massage, and she was one of the only therapists who actually listened to my request. I've had my hair cut and highlighted by Cari and she is fantastic and very experienced, particularly in coloring. Katrina is great as well, and so sweet. The best part is they aren't all booked out months in advance! Don't park on Ashby or College, as it's only an hour limit - - drive to Benvenue or Russell and park there for free til 6PM. read more

Katerina did a great job! She made sure my length was the way I wanted it, that the layers were just right, and managed to give me the cut I wanted based off of my very terrible general description. She is a wonderful hairstylist and so sweet. Easy to talk to if conversation is your thing, but it's also alright if you don't feel like chatting. It wasn't difficult for me to get a last-minute appointment in, so it was pretty great. It's one of the more reasonable salons in the area ($55 for my cut), so I'll be back whenever my ends get scraggly (or when I need to cut off the depressing weight of midterms :)). read more

TERRIBLE customer service!!! I booked an appointment online, called to confirm the day before to find out they didn't have my appointment scheduled. The guy on the phone kept saying he had to go and was completely unhelpful. Finally he offered availability with another stylist which i was not thrilled about but agreed. An hour before my appointment another very rude associate called me to cancel my appointment. I explained that I was already more than half way there, as I live in the city, and all he could say was "oh sorry". No offer of fitting me in with someone else or even offering to rebook my appointment. I have always loved going to Katerina but I will never be back. read more

I've been seeing Tito Flores for 6 years. I was pregnant when my Doc suggested, if I must cover my grey hair, I go to an Aveda salon for their organic products, Well I must and so I did! I saw Tito for my color and he was wonderful. He listened so well to my needs and desires that, after a few visits, I ditched the hairstylist I'd been seeing for the previous 7 years to have Tito manage my cuts as well. He just gets it. He listens to what I'd like and makes suggestions on how to improve a look. He's extremely talented with color and gets excited when asked to change up a look but also has an understanding for what I am comfortable with. He's wonderful at making cut and color suggestions but knows my limits. That takes talent and intuition, to understand what his client is comfortable with. Also, I've always had a good level of banter with Tito. We chat a bit about fashion, food; interests we share. But there's also a comfortable level of silence. I don't want my stylist to be overly chatty. A visit to the salon is me-time. I need some peace for relaxation and reflection. Tito loves his work and focuses intently at times, requiring some silence. I love to watch and take mental notes from how he cuts, dries and styles my hair. Tito makes me feel beautiful and fabulous. I've been going to Katerina at Moonshadow for nine years now, and I've NEVER had a better stylist in my life. She's helped me through thinking through new cuts, how to grow my hair out and still look great, different shades of coloring and highlighting. Her advice is always spot on, and yet she's willing to try new things and suggest alterations that always help. I first came to her after having a completely botched haircut and coloring almost a decade ago, and I've had her do my hair every five or six weeks since, with no problems, and getting better and better all the time. I have never encountered a poor stylist here, but I have to say, hands-down, Katerina is my favorite. She is perfect at both listening to my requests, and being honest about what is possible. She will work with you 100%, while simultaneously making sure to talk you out of a regretful hairdo. But I did NOT get my hair cut by that guy (who's no longer there), I got my hair cut by the owner/husband. I'm incredibly un-femalelike in that I hate taking time to do my hair. No standing in front of the mirror for me. Super low-maintenance describes me well. In fact, most days I will leave the house with wet hair that may have been combed. If I have a good cut, my hair just falls into place and looks A-OK which is good enough for me (even if I spent 30 minutes styling it, it would only look just a little better than A-OK.) Falling into the low maintenance category, I despise paying big bucks for a cut that won't look good unless I style it, and I avoid haircuts like the plague. This leads me to the reason I love Bill's haircuts. They last!! I can grow them out for 3 to 4 to 5 months, and they still look great. Not so easily said with other cuts... And at $40 plus a $10 tip, I'm not paying uber-bank for a cut I won't like in 6 weeks. No more $25 specials for first time customers will woo me (especially when in 6-8 weeks, my hair looks 'meh'). No more excitement from getting cuts at random, snazzy-looking salons while traveling. I'm sticking to Bill and his $40 low-maintenance cuts. I'll go at least semiannually, maybe even quarterly. One note - their online booking system has a couple of bugs that are being worked out. So you may want to book online and call to make sure they recieved your appointment. The system may send you a confimation without booking you on their side 0_o. This happened to me, but they were still able to accomodate me within 30 minutes of my desired appointment time. I didn't want to go somewhere that would be too aggressively hip, so when the one person I know here highly, highly recommended Moonshadow, I immediately made an appointment. After the coloring, the stylist seemed to be on a timetable to get me out of there, regardless of whether I was pleased with the cut. Every time I asked for a change, she seemed put out. My color started to fade almost immediately, and I still don't like my cut. If I could find where I packed the good scissors, I'd try to fix it myself...I'd always thought Aveda salons were more-or-less trustworthy, but no longer. read more

Let me start by saying that this review is for the shampoo/blow dry service only. That said, I think it's fair to say that, the standard of a salon's blow dry service reflects how good that salon will be, generally. I have gotten *scores* of blow dries over the past couple of decades--yes, decades. And yes, scores. I have long, thick hair that is very healthy and looks amazing after a proper salon blow dry. That's why, of course, I pay the big bucks to come in and have one done--so that I can leave feeling like I "just stepped out of a salon." (Quotes optional). So you can imagine my dismay when I walked into this *AVEDA* shop--Aveda, a name known for its incredible wash/blow dries--and left feeling more than underwhelmed. I had never been in here before and, when I called, the conversation resulted in the person on the other saying--and I quote--"a blow dry at 5p . . hmm, well, all I can do is book you with Sherry, is that OK?" What kind of representation is that? I mean, as a newcomer, I am now on notice that the stylist you are booking me with is somehow lesser than others. Not professional. But I was in a pinch and figured, it's an Aveda salon, I'm sure any stylist can do a good blow dry. I was wrong. Sherry was extremely kind--offered me water, gave me a good wash--but she did not know how to blow dry hair. There is a technique that trained stylists use. It involves a round brush, high heat, very fast work (so that the hair follicles don't dry slowly and create frizz), and a graceful hand that works on section by section of hair, resulting in a "salon fresh" look at the end. That is the only reason a person would pay for a blow dry, and not do it herself! (See: me). So you can imagine my frustration when this blow dry was NONE of the above. She must've spent 15 minutes on a 2-inch section of hair, drying it over and over again; I'm not sure why (?). I had to ask her whether she could turn up the dryer heat, to get moving, bc I knew the rest of my hair was drying out (sans hair dryer), which is disaster when you have long/thick hair! After more than an hour--again, why? I get my hair blow dried in 45min at most professional salons--she was still just going over dried sections of hair, causing the hair to completely flatten out. And the kicker? At the end, there already was almost no bounce in the hair--but she went through whatever few limp curls were there, with a comb. The number one rule of a proper blow dry is that you don't brush/comb it, bc you have used the round brush to make the big, beautiful curls. Ahhhhh. I had to end the session by asking her--ASKING her--to please stop, it had been almost 1h20min, and that I had to leave. I dropped another star because I am not happy with the pricing, and do plan to write to the salon about this. Online bookings show Sherry's blow dry as costing $30; when I called, they said blow dries "start at $45." I was ultimately charged $45 for a blow dry that I could have done myself, at home. Instead, I'm out an hour and a half and a chunk of change. Disappointed. read more

I went in last week to have my eyebrows waxed. I didn't have an appointment, but Stacie (the only stylist who does brows) was gracious enough to take me as a walk-in. She was nice, and everything seemed pretty routine, but as soon as I walked out I felt a sharp stinging below my left eyebrow. It hurt until I got home, where I looked in the mirror to see a half-inch-long red gash. It was surprisingly painful for the next few days, and it was bright red--until it scabbed over for a few more days. I've been getting my eyebrows waxed for the better part of a decade and have never had this happen. A friend told me that sometimes salons over-heat their wax so that they don't need to use as much, and maybe that's what caused this. Either way, it's frustrating that it was too dark in the back of the salon for me to have noticed this while I was still there, which meant I ended up paying $18 + tip for a painful, unsightly cut above my eye. read more

He's the real deal - he trained with Vidal Sassoon in London, he is creative and stylish, and he's serious about making you look your very best. My first treatment with Tito was a Brazilian blowout - he took me from frizz to fab. He spent time with me to explain how to style my new look and made recommendations for the right products to use. I loved it! Since then, I've been seeing Tito for cuts and color. He is an artist with the coloring process. An artist with a vision. And do you know how hard it is to find someone who understands curly hair? Tito has curls of his own, so he's an expert. I completely trust him to make me beautiful. read more

I recently got a Brazilian Blowout by Tito. The BB is AMAZING and Tito did an excellent job and explained the process and upkeep very well. The girl at the front desk was really nice despite the obvious hectic Saturday morning salon. While Tito did an amazing job and came up with some really creative suggestions for my hair down the road, I feel that he did not try to get to know me as a client (my first time meeting him). I could totally have been a repeat for him (repeat client = more $$$ for him) but I felt I was the one asking all the questions, trying to get to know him. I'm not used to sitting in silence while in the salon chair but that's how it was for 1/2 the time because I ran out of things to ask him. He suggested product for me but wasn't pushy about it. I had talked to him about being a my new stylist but in the end he didn't try to book another appointment for a BB or cut/color with him (That always happens it seems). He was also ten minutes late to our appointment which didn't sit well with me either. My time is valuable and when I make an effort to be there on time to not waste your time as a stylist, then I think the same effort should be made on their part. The salon itself is small but nice. Parking/traffic is horrible on a Saturday morning at least. I had to drive around for ten minutes before I found a space. I also saw a lot of stylists answering their cell phones/returning text messages while with a client, which in my opinion is rude. When I called in to make my appt, the receptionist told me that the process would only take 90 minutes but scheduled it for two hours and we still went over time (I was there for 2.5 hours) and I don't have really thick/long hair. I feel that I was overcharged also (website says $200+ and I was charged $250) but didn't put up a fight. I might have returned to Tito and the salon had he been a bit more interested in getting to know me and made me feel like he would like my business. read more
