You know you have a good cut when people stop you and ask where you get your hair cut. EMILY is amazing and cuts my (straight, peri-menopausal, greying) hair. She is fabulous, she will listen to what you want, and give you the haircut you've been searching for. My straight hair somehow magically has beachy waves, movement, and fullness. She has also cut my kiddo's hair and my Mom's hair, so three generations (which is a testament to Emily's skills). She handled my kiddo's ambivalence about cutting her super long hair with such kindness, and my kiddo came out thrilled with her cut (a feat I did not think was possible she was so attached to her hair). I wanted to love this salon. The space is beautiful. The decor is gorgeous, the aesthetic is cool, and the overall brand feels thoughtful and elevated. Unfortunately, the hair did not match the marketing. I came in looking for dimensional color with texture and visible tones woven throughout. I shared inspo photos and was excited to do something elevated yet edgy. Instead, I left with what was essentially a flat, jet black color from root to end. No dimension. No texture. The haircut was equally disappointing. There were only a few quick snips before we were done. Once I got home and styled it myself, I realized the cut was uneven and lacked shape. It was honestly one of the laziest haircuts I've ever received. The most shocking part was the bill. The total came close to about $500 for the color and cut. At that price point, I expect a thoughtful consultation, technical execution, attention to detail, and a result that resembles what was shared. What makes this especially disappointing is that I genuinely wanted to become a regular client. The salon has a great vibe and a strong creative identity. But when you're charging premium prices, the work has to justify it. Don't go to Stevie for bixie/bob cuts.. completely uneven, unblended back... I thought she could save it and I saw her for a quick 10 min to do so but she could not save it. The more and more I looked at it I felt more upset...I had to go to another salon to fix this and they were able to save it and actually give me the cut I wanted for a third of her price, thank god! Customer service - she was nice on the chair but afterwards she won't go above and beyond for you when comes to arranging to trying to get her cut fixed. I had to walk around with this cut for two weeks because she could not see me the same week I got the cut. Even after seeing her like I said for 10 min for a correction, my hair didn't get better, and I didn't feel like she enjoyed having to see me again. I had to walk away as I knew at this time that she was not the one to fix my hair (her original cut). The cut came out, still, uneven and not blended. read more

Both times Stevie took the time to listen to exactly what I wanted and put so much detail in her work. Nora is the one! She is an incredible stylist. She has been cutting and coloring my hair for years now, I'm so grateful and I highly recommend. I have very curly wavy hair and Nora always does an amazing job keeping it healthy and looking great. I have dark hair and she has taken me to beautiful red and copper shades and blonde. Nora has been doing hair a long time and really knows what she is doing. She does my hair in a way that looks good when it grows out. It's hard not to praise the skills of Onika enough. Both my partner and I have received cuts from her and we always leave feeling fresh and re-invigorated. One of the hardest things to find in a stylist is someone who has the right balance of providing input/suggestions while also knowing/listening to what their client wants. Onika does this to a tee and it's clearly a big reason behind her success and praise. For me, I have had the same style for years and she was able to keep it going during the pandemic, while my partner has had variations and changes overtime (often a direct result of ideas from Onika.) And as a extra bonus, you'll find that her salon is one of the most inclusive and welcoming environments out there (not that this should have to be a bonus, but when this all lines up it puts a smile on your face.) My experience was not with the owner but a woman who told me she rents a chair. I went to get my roots touched up. The colorist assessed the color and proceeded with the dye. She was very nice and listened intently to what I wanted to do. She did take care and attention in applying color. Then I asked her if she would do a clear gloss- she said clear glosses don't do anything. I insisted and she did apply one (and when it was done admitted it was a good idea!). When I got home, I could see she applied a dye many shades darker than the rest of my hair. It looks like I have a dark stripe now in my hair. So even though she seemed sweet and knowledgeable, she really did not do a good job choosing a color and how could she not know clear gloss is a very nice touch?? The other huge issue I had was with the price. She charged $280 to do my roots. That's way too much. Roots generally cost $150, maybe a little more or less? But not $280. So please beware if you go this place to pre-confirm the price and I don't recommend their colorist. read more

I had a first haircut with Stevie and found her nice and pleasant. I wanted to like her and she was confident she could cut my bangs as I showed her photos of what I asked for. Unfortunately, she did an awful job and I sat in her chair crying because of how short she went and urging her to fix what she could. I had asked her not to go above my eyebrows and you'll see in the photos that she definitely did. She botched my hair and I left having had the worst experience. I've attached a photo of what I showed her and then the end result. She tried to tell me that if I push down my bangs it'll look like what I asked for. Clearly there's no amount of "pushing down" my bangs to make it look like what I wanted. She did about as good of a job as I would have with no experience cutting my own hair. I don't get why she didn't gradually cut instead of chopping it off to begin with. I would not recommend going to Stevie for a haircut. read more

I accidentally discovered Onika on an online thread where someone in my neighborhood was looking for a new hairdresser....a person replied that she really liked Marmalade Parlor, so I read several reviews and decided to go ahead and make an appointment. My hairdresser had stopped doing hair during Covid and currently has no plans to return. I was *desperate* to get my Covid hair back to normal!!!! I had to wait about a month for my appt. and that finally happened this week. First, I really loved her little space! Small and cozy with lots of windows and a view of 40th and MLK. I liked that she is a one person operation and not in a busy and bustling salon, like I've been to in the past. Second, she really took time to ask questions about my hair and color and wants and needs. We spent quite a bit of time looking at photos and discussing what would work and what I like. In the end, she did a fabulous job and I'm so happy with it! She was a joy to chat with considering we had just met, and it turns out we knew a lot of the same people from various salons over the years. I'll definitely be back to see Onika again! read more

Onika is simply the best - she is great at helping you find what's right for you based on what you want and what's best for your face shape/skin tone and hair health. She works so hard to get your hair perfect. Onika crafted a short hair cut for me that made me feel amazing - most short hair cuts I didn't like. But I can't go back to long hair now. She's done all sorts of fun colors on my hair and she makes sure I go home with tools for maintenance. I'm moving away so I will have a truly hard time replacing her. My experience was great, from beginning to end. Onika takes lots of precautions, which I really appreciated. Initially I was not planning on going to a salon for the rest of the year, but she had posted a video on her sanitizing process which put my mind at ease.
