I am a caregiver of an 80 year old lady with dementia and I took my lovely patient & her daughter today to get a couple pixie cuts. We called about a week ago to set up an appointment and booked with Cynthia. For one, the parking was very convenient and I was able to get my patient up to the suite safely by using a call box to get in and up the elevator. Upon arriving into the suite the first thing I noticed was how clean and nicely decorated it was. It smelled great and had a very welcoming environment. The daughter went first and we sat in the lobby, when it was time for my client to go in she felt very comfortable and welcomed. Cynthia was very kind and helpful. I'm very disappointed in how everything turned out after getting my hair done here with Sokonthy. I understand that the color I wanted is a process, I went from dark hair to wanting a light balayage. However, the overall work she did on my hair was super blotchy and uneven, worst in person than in photos. I just don't trust the same person to do my hair again after that. I have had my hair done many times before and I always go from dark to light and I never had to come back to "fix it" or to "lift more" and mind you this was when I was using box dye to color my hair black. I stop using box dye two years ago. I'm not here to insult someone's work because I'm sure she does well with other people's hair, unfortunately her work is not for me and that's Ok. This is the part where I asked for a refund because of how mush I dislike my hair. Many people told me I should ask for my money back because it's just horrible. Sokonthy and I message back and forth about this and she keep insisting to fix my hair and I told her that I think it's best if I don't go back to her because if I end up not liking her work for the second time, I would just be even more upset and I just want to avoid that. I asked for a full refund and she asked if she can give me 50% of what I paid. I feel bad, and I agreed. TWO DAYS went by and didn't hear anything from her and no refund on my Venmo. I woke up those two days just feeling so upset because I have to walk out of the house with this hair color. Since she haven't refunded me, I told her I just want a full refund because now I actually have to go to someone else to color correct my hair and that will cost way more than regular hair color. I have to spend at least $100 an hour to fix my hair, that can take up to 6 hours. Sokonthy was upset that I'm asking for "more" money when all I'm asking is the exact amount of what I paid JUST for color (I also got a haircut). She told me at the end that because I'm asking for more, she will not refund me any money and she's taking back the deal of correcting my hair (which I told her many times, I didn't want her to do it). She also said that "no matter what she do, it won't make me happy". First off all, I did not ask for anything else from her but to get my money back from the start. THAT'S IT! She keep insisting to fix it, which I do appreciate, but if someone doesn't trust your work, please don't force them to go back to you. A month later, I called the salon to talk to the owner and someone gave me her personal cell. I didn't want to call her on her personal cell so I called again a second time and she's still not available. So I message the owner and it's been a few days and I receive no response. I regret ever going here. I hate to have to leave a negative review on small local business, that's why I tried to at least reach out first and handle it just between us but I was ignored. No apology whatsoever, either. I really wanted to like this place. Shame. read more

Wasn't too thrilled about waiting for my appointment to start, but I also didn't know that all the stylists ran independently here so everyone's on their own. I was worried that with the late start, my appointment would be cut short, but that wasn't the case at all. I saw Hao and she was really easy to talk to and cut & styled my hair to my liking. She asked if I liked the cut throughout the process, which I really appreciated. After I got home, I did notice a few pieces that look a bit choppy, but maybe that's my fault for asking for more layers :/ A few suggestions: let clients know if you're running late ahead of time so they can make arrangements accordingly. The girl who was scheduled after me kept following up--I totally understood her frustration, but it was also a bit annoying because she did it multiple times. I did take off a few stars because the salon needs a serious remodel - everything looks super old, cluttered, and outdated. Also, as a salon, the other stylists working probably shouldn't be talking badly about their clients in front of other people lol. read more

This review is for Hao and her lack of professionalism. I booked an appointment way back on 9/21/18 for 10/19 to have a haircut and my balayage refreshed. On the morning of the appointment, she texted me that she was having car problems and eventually needed to reschedule. I was very understanding at that point and decided to wait for her call to reschedule. Finally, she calls me and turns out she is fully booked and couldn't squeeze me in until 11/2/18 at 9am. Even though I had to wait another 2 weeks, I was fine with it. I just needed my hair done before I leave the country for vacation. However on 11/2, turns out her car was having issues again and texts me less than hour before my appointment to RESCHEDULE FOR THE SECOND TIME. At this point, I was very annoyed. I understand we all have days like these but I had already rescheduled all my appointments and plans only for her to cancel again and waste another full day. After telling her I was upset, she replies to me saying that she "tried to accommodate a different time for me" even though I already told her ahead after the first time she cancelled that I needed to leave for vacation and how I scheduled my other commitments around this appointment. I have worked with multiple balayage artists before and have never had this happen. I didn't want to drive all the way to San Jose for a good balayage artist. This is just unacceptable. If I had known, I could have scheduled an appointment elsewhere but now can't since balayage appointments take weeks ahead with good hairstylists and I leave for vacation next week. I was willing to pay for her time since I know how long these types of appointments are but obviously she has not valued mine. read more

I recently got my hair done by stylist Hao and this is my second time being with her! I moved to the bay area less than a year ago and was hesitant to find a new stylist. When I first met Hao she was friendly, asked me what I wanted, was receptive to looking at some of my inspirations pictures, and asked me about my lifestyle to give me the best look! When I came to her, my hair was pretty much virgin hair and my hair is really BLACK BLACK naturally. Hao was open and honest with me, and gracefully told me my options in terms of how light I would be able to go while still keeping my hair healthy. Throughout the whole process she explained each step and let me know what to expect; this kept me at ease (esp when youre doing color and you sit there for hours not knowing what the result will be!) Bottom line, Hao exceeding my expectations! She has the most delicate hand to make my hair look beautifully blended. I knew my hair would be challenging because of it's virgin natural color, but she worked wonders! I wanted to go lighter so I went to a second session with her and again, she performed magic on my hair! Not only beautiful color, but cut, and styling as well. After having the same hair style and natural color for years and years, I decided I was ready for a change. I was naturaly hesitant and concerned with damaging my hair until I spoke to John Yates. He was friendly and very informative on what the process would be, based on the style and color I was going for. John was also very accommodating. He scheduled me in for a Friday 5:30 pm appointment even after knowing that I would be require a lot of time to achieve the results that I wanted and spent 4+ hours perfecting the ombre/balayage look and I must say the result were exactly if not even better than I was hoping for. I was happy with my $25 hair cut for years, until the lady completely RUINED my long black hair with bleach and a choppy half ass hair cut. I was in dire need of a hair cut to put some layers in my thick Asian hair to give it some dimensions so it could look like it moves again. To begin with I have ALOT of hair so it needs to be textured the right way so I don't end up looking like a cone head. When all my hair is the same length, it is just be overwhelming to manage not to mention hideous. I was also a victim of a bad bleach job. All my hair was fried, when I washed it felt like straw. I would spend 10-15 minutes detangling it everyday in the shower and as I brushed. I searched for a creditable salon for weeks and finally came across reviews on Atheena's work. I decided to put my faith in fellow yelpers that stated she had experience working with Asian hair. I contacted the salon. Atheena was very pleasant on the phone and listened to my disaster hair story. She was available a few days later and let me just say I think she did an amazing job fixing my hair!!! I loved her cutting technique, chopped off all the dead hair. Gave it layers. The cut thinned out my hair so much which was exactly what I asked for. I came in once in August for cut and color, and again in September for my wedding hair. I had been putting off going to a stylist who specializes in curly hair for a long time, thinking that if I just switched to the right shampoo my hair would behave, but I'm really glad I came and saw Viatrix! She cut and colored my hair in a way that better suited my curls than the cut I had previously. After the cut, she explained everything she did to my hair and why, and told me which products she was using. You know how you can never make your hair look as good as it did straight out of the salon? Not true here! Viatrix basically taught me how to do my hair the way I like it! What should you do the day before you leave to Cancun? Definitely not getting your hair radically done by someone you just randomly found through Groupon. After all, why would you want to risk getting it effed up and looking less than a diva on your vacation? Or so, I thought. After scoring a Groupon deal with Kayla many months ago, I finally had the chance to book her service for reviving my dead mane into life a couple of weeks before the deal expired. And, boy, was I satisfied with the turnout. Kayla did an uber-awesome job on my tress and I owe my stylish cut and color to her incredible hair-taming prowess. I gotta admit that I had several episodes of mini-heart attack when my long locks were chopped off into an A-line. I also almost keeled over when I saw how blond the crown of my head was after I got the wash. It certainly takes a lot of trusting and praying to the holy god of hair to have everything turn out right, and luckily, Kayla delivers. I had an appointment today for a hair cut with Jasmin and I was super happy with her service as well as the hair cut itself! I am terrible at explaining what it is I want, but I was able to show her a picture and she really seemed to understand what I was going for. She was super prompt in taking me at my appointment time, did a great wash and blow dry along with the cut, and on top of it all, was very pleasant to chat with, and really knows her stuff. Side note: She mentioned she actually specializes in men's hair cuts, so if you're a dude, I imagine she'd be great for you! That being said, for women's cuts, I can say she did a fabulous job. Found out about Phoenix Rising through a Groupon deal for a cut and style with Kayla. I had no problems booking an appointment on fairly short notice: I literally bought the Groupon the Monday of, and crossed my fingers when calling in on Wednesday hoping to make an appointment soonish, and lo and behold! Kayla was able to fit me in that Friday morning. Parking was a little bit of a puzzle for me because the salon was on the face of a rather busy but small-ish street so I ended up roaming some of the nearby side streets until I found metered parking. Kayla was super sweet and really listened to what I wanted out of my haircut. I essentially wanted to just clean up all my split ends from all the sun damage and maybe add a little flair in (but nothing crazy because I'm super lazy when it comes to work mornings). Kayla suggested taking off and inch to and inch 'n a half and adding in a few extra layers. To my pleasant surprise, she actually stuck to it and didn't hack off anything more than 2 inches at the max. The layers turned out beautifully, and Kayla took extra care in giving me a nice blowout at the end to really highlight the new feathery layers she added. She also made sure to do that diagonal upward cut so the layers didn't have that super chunky I-obviously-just-got-a-haircut type deal. I really appreciated that because I already have thick hair, and a lot of it, so it really doesn't need any help being blunt and heavy. Very happy with my cut! I've been wanting a specific layered hair cut for a while but with other stylists that I've gone to they haven't been anywhere close to the picture I've showed them but finally I found Jasmin who was able to cut my bangs and hair like the picture I showed her, yay!! I bought a Groupon for a haircut with Irene and couldn't be more satisfied. I arrived a few minutes after 5pm and Irene was welcoming & gracious. Irene's warm way of making me feel at ease enabled me to actually take the plunge for a little sidecut that was just small enough to cover for work. She patiently worked with me to section of various shapes for the sidecut to make sure I was satisfied and secure with taking this small plunge. At the end, she styled my hair to accentuate the side cut look so that I could imagine what it would look like when I went "all the way" (shaved off a larger section)! When I looked at the time, almost 1.5 hrs had passed (easily, especially with the fun and enlightening conversation we had); I was utterly amazed at Irene's patience and care given to the best work/experience for a client. I love Cynthia! I've been going to her for a few years now and she never disappoints. She really listens to what you want, and she cuts your hair dry and stops to ask if you want shorter/ more layers, etc. as she goes along so you're always happy with the result. The last two times I've gone I also got highlights and she's done a beautiful job with that as well. Also, I should mention that I am the kind of girl who gets her hair cut AT MOST twice per year, and I'm always super happy with how Cynthia's cuts grow out. She also respects that I need a wash and go haircut. I hate when I tell the stylist that I'm just not going to be blow drying my hair every day, and they give me a cut that only looks good hyper styled with tons of product.
