After searching through several salons for a fair price to cut/trim my curly hair without the extra "new client fees" or a Deva cut, I found Ms. Patricia, and she was fantastic! She was incredibly attentive and kind, asking numerous questions about how I wanted my haircut and styled. She even suggested some great ideas that would suit me and recommended products for future use. Throughout the process, she explained everything in detail and showed me each piece she was trimming. Yelp really steering me in the right direction here! I wanted to find a hair salon close to my house and Weeds was right around the corner. I called them up, left a message and a hairstylists, Merisa, got back to me within a few days. Even though they are located right off Grand Ave, they are in a less busy part so parking was a breeze and it took me only couple minutes to get there. As for the haircut, Merisa was fantastic! She's perfected that balance of making suggestions/giving her expert advice while listening to the client and fulfilling their hair desires. She was extremely friendly and so we spent the whole time chatting and laughing. She's got such a good energy so I just left there happy, excited for life, oh and looking fabulous with my new hair! read more

I tried to book an appointment with Kasia at Weeds salon. I was told to book an appointment online, thru schedulicity. I tried to book an appointment, it said I had to phone to confirm appointment. I tried a number of times, both on my laptop and my phone. I texted Kasia and told her I could not schedule online. She responded once, saying "You're having trouble scheduling online?". I responded yes, tried again to schedule, No luck. I texted her at least 4 more times, saying I could not book an appointment and could she please get back to me. I have never seen her for a cut, which is what I wanted. She never bothered to respond. Incredibly rude and makes Weeds look like a very unprofessional salon. What a way to treat a client. She could have easily responded to tell me to what was going on. I texted her when I saw an opening and I wanted it, and she did not reply. A really mean-spirited human. An acquaintance who recommended her for a cut actually is going to cancel her upcoming appointment. She emailed me "I don't think I'd want to take a chance with someone who doesn't return texts or phone calls. That's irresponsible to clients." Terrible way to treat people in general. read more

I don't like to write bad reviews but this is something I thought hard about. I went to Weeds Salon sometime around April or May. I can't remember. Jessica was my hairstylist. I asked for long layers and texture; my one request was that I needed all my hair to be long enough for a ponytail. I had great service throughout. I enjoyed the wash and the conversation. But I did not like my haircut; the most important thing. I mentioned to Jessica that I wasn't satisfied. Usually, layers are blended and slowly differ in length. On my head, the layers were at least two inches apart. She said it was fine and continued to style my hair. Even after she styled it again, I mentioned how "choppy" my hair looked (The exact word I used.) But she blamed it on my hair color. (My hair had a black-to-brunette ombre.) She said my hair only looked that way because my tips were lighter than the rest of my hair, and that's why it looks choppy. I complained a total of three times, asking that she blend my hair in further, but each time, I was rebuffed. I was frustrated so I paid and left. I disliked my haircut so much, I didn't take any pictures, but I wish I did. My feelings resurfaced recently because I took some professional photos where I can still see the large difference in my hair length. Almost 6 months later, I'm still disappointed. My biggest concern, I mentioned my dissatisfaction several times and it was never acknowledged. read more

I have been through it all with Jessica and my hair. She has never let me down or steered me wrong. We've grown out an impulsive undercut (not done by her). I trusted her to do my hair before my elopement and days before I delivered my baby. Now we're rocking with some postpartum hair loss, but I know I'm in good hands with Jess and will always look great. I've been seeing Kasia Kern for 12 years, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to write her so well-deserved 5-star review. Yep, Kasia gives great cuts and color (she perfectly replicated my streaky blonde locks from when I was younger) but she also "gets me." She knows that I'm a wash-and-go kind of girl, and she knows that if we're going to chat, small talk isn't my thing. She's incredibly well-read and well-travelled, so we talk about mysteries and beautiful cities while she works her wonders with my hair. I love what she does with my hair, but she's also a really cool, thoughtful person. I have never in my life been "faithful" to a particular stylist, but I'd follow Kasia to the ends of the earth. read more

One of the best haircuts I've ever gotten was by Jessica. I wanted something different for my hair, so I brought a couple pictures in for a shag cut. Jessica outlined what would work best for my hair and why. The cut has grown out really well, lots of texture and doesn't look boring as it usually does. After living with this haircut for two weeks I am forced to downgrade my review to 3 stars. I feel it's too ordinary and too bland and I don't feel the cut expresses my inner fabulosity and quirkiness enough. I told my hairdresser that I wanted a rockin' haircut because I was going to the Democratic Convention. But my hair belongs at the Republican Convention. UPDATE SEPT. 9: Last night the shop's owner fixed my haircut and although she didn't know what a "fashion mullet" was, she did a great approximation of one. I've been seeing Meg for a couple of years now. She fabulous and always does a great job! I have fine, big curls, and always worry about the "bowl head" with too many layers. I really liked this place and I wish I could post a 5 star review but I just can't. I loved the girl that did my hair (for about a year) she does a great cut and color. Unfortunately she double booked (and canceled) me multiple times and was always late for my appointments. Finally, after she just didn't show for my last appointment (and didn't offer me any sort of compensation) I've had to move on to a new salon. I'm sorry but at the prices they charge, I need to know that my appointment is going to happen at the time we have pre-scheduled. I hate to sound self righteous but my time is limited and therefore valuable to me and I just can't afford to be cancelled on and stood up. I have heard great things about this place from some of my clients, so I decided to get a haircut there. I found out it was $50 for a haircut, but as Warren Buffet once said, "price is what you pay, value is what you get." So, I scheduled an appointment and saw Nancy Brown. During my haircut, Nancy's coworkers kept giving her encouragement as I was getting my haircut, which made me more nervous than anything. The persistence in their positive comments made me question if I was really getting a good haircut or not. As it turned out the haircut I got was pretty awful compared to the other barbers around. I must admit my hair is tough to cut, but I believe she doesn't have experience in cutting hair for Asian men. The fade was all messed-up and I didn't get what I asked for at all. If they offered me to come there for free, I wouldn't. read more

(Nancy is no longer at Weeds salon and is now at Miller & Company in Montclair, which is a super cute place. I miss Weeds, but I'm a Leo and Leos are loyal and also Nancy is the best hair stylist I've ever had. Search for Miller & Company and visit her there!) I have curly hair, and curly hair is REALLY hard to cut. And I always want something funky, which makes it really hard to find a good hairdresser. Once I find a hairdresser I like, I never switch. And I switched for Nancy. I visited her when a friend of mine was putting on a benefit for Locks of Love. A good cause was worth a little risk...potentially a large risk... in deviating from my current stylist. I liked him. Dependable. I said to Nancy, "Nancy, I want something funky." (Hey if you're going to take the plunge, you may as well put it all out there. It can't be that bad right?!! (I know, I know it can. Once I let my stoned friend cut my hair and I had to go straight to the salon it was so bad. I shudder to remember.)) Anyway, I said to Nancy, "Nancy, I want something funky." And for the first time ever, I got a hair suggestion that blew my mind!! Like short in the back with long curls going down my back and it was insane and I said, "um...a little tooo funky." And what resulted was the PERFECT HAIRCUT. It was funky but in a subtle way that made it versatile for many different looks. Short if I want. Long if I want. Perfect. This last time I had Nancy cut my hair, I said frantically mid-cut, "Wait, but what if it looks too strange?!!" I was feeling like maybe it was going to look too strange. And she said, ever so matter-of-factly, "We'll fix it." It didn't look strange. It looked hot like it always does. Nancy's great. She listens, she suggests and she delivers. And she's at Weeds. Weeds is awesome, btw. They sell Bumble & Bumble. The salon is adorable. The owner obviously has a great eye for decoration; she even has that black and white cow patterned broom I've been eying for so long, but won't ever buy because my kitchen is red & orange not black & white. But it fits in so well at this salon, that I don't think I'll have to eye it any longer, I can just appreciate it when I go there. And OMG they have a parking lot!! read more

I just saw Kat a few weeks ago for partial highlights and I am so relieved I have found someone in my town who can do a great job with my blonde. I am super picky about my hair, and blondes don't always have the most fun trying to get the right color going. I like to be a cooler tone, and struggle with yellow/brassy tones and Kat noticed right away that it was cooler and was totally on board with continuing that for me. My other issue was that my last highlight job left it a bit stripey and it was very disappointing, especially after spending 2-3x more than she charges. yikes. Kat was pleasant, friendly and did a very professional job. For a "partial" I had more foils than I probably ever have, and she did very fine weaving for the highlights so it is nicely blended and looks great! Also, HUGE deal, her head massages in the shampoo/conditioning were AMAZING. I am tempted to just schedule a blowout in between just for that. I might to refresh the toner and that would be a big plus. so, affordable, good color tone, great blending, pleasant, parking, cute salon! win win win win win. read more

I used to go to the uber-hip Temescal Alley Barbershop, and they are great but Meg has consistently made me look handsomer and handsomer with each cut. She has the artist's eye to make YOU look good. I found out about Weeds from the family that I nanny for. The whole family has been getting their hair cut from Becky, the owner, for probably about a decade. They all have amazing hair and Becky does a fantastic job with all of them (including a very picky 20 year old man). When I started going to Weeds, about two and a half years ago, I was referred to Rachel Browning. She knocked my socks off! She gave me a FABULOUS haircut and did a wondeful job of covering my premature gray. I've been seeing her ever since and I love, love, LOVE her. I always love what she does with my hair. She's great at cutting bangs and layers. She's also a wiz at color. I used to be blonder but we decided to go back to my natural color (a darker ash blonde) and it really looks great. I've never been so happy with my color. My hair is always soft, shiny, swingy and full of volume after seeing Rachel. Rachel is a true sweetie too. She's professional, always on time and fun to talk to. She will bring you tea and give you a wonderful head massage as she shampoos your hair. A nice added touch! She knows how to make you feel pampered. Rachel is also a great resource because she does so many beauty-related things: hair, make-up, weddings, tanning, brazilan blowouts....she is one stop shopping! And speaking of one stop shopping, if you need an eyebrow wax, Nancy in the next station does a great job. Love Rachel, love the salon (free easy parking!), love the people that work there. I make the trip from SOMA to Oakland just to see Kat Walters. I am very happy with the way she colors and cuts my hair and I have been coming to her for about 6-7 months. Ok... I moved up here and could not find someone to trust my hair with and wound up trimming and layer my own hair. Here's why: I walk in with pictures of what I want and they usually say no problem...we talk and they cut and shape my hair into what I find out to be nothing close to what I wanted. This I go home and fix my hair. That was the past. Rebecca (owner) said she wanted a chance to change my heart on the matter. Firstly, the salon is quirky-cool. The atmosphere is abundant with upbeat friendliness and inviting allure. Rebecca sat me down and I discussed the photos I brought with and explained that I wanted a hybrid of two similar cuts. She relayed my vision back to make sure that we were both in agreement before preceding. After shampoo and conditioning she made initial cuts at a conservative length and explained once the hair is dry we will tailor the cut more.( no one has ever done that). Then after checking length, layers and shape together we both agreed to tailor it more. She wouldn't not stop til she and I were both saying " Ohh Yeah. There it is." She is the most intuitive, professional, precise hair healer out here that I ever met. For the record, I really don't leave Yelp reviews. Like, ever. I read them, sure, but leaving them is not really my jam... but there's a first time for everything, and I have Merisa at Weeds Salon to thank. I've passed by Weeds Salon a million times but seemed to always conveniently forget about them when I need a haircut. When I woke up and noticed that what was formerly a pixie cut was now an extremely unflattering pompadour-slash-bird's-nest, I had that sudden urge to GET IT OFF RIGHT NOW IT'S AWFUL WHAT HAVE I DONE LETTING THIS GET THIS WAY I HAVE FAILED MYSELF... and fortunately called Weeds Salon first. Merisa managed to get me in same-day and took me from appalling pompadour to perfect pixie in 30 minutes flat. At least I *think* it was 30 minutes; she was also the first stylist I've ever had that engaged me in conversation that didn't feel forced and awkward, but rather like I was catching up with an old friend, which made the time fly by. That was super weird, but in the best way. I've never walked out of a place feeling that satisfied. So I am that client that gets her haircut and colored every 8 months but I always go back to the same stylist and that is Kasia. Like all the other reviews below me, she is theeee best. I have been a client of Kasia's since 2010 and went to college in SD. So I would wait to get my hair done until I came home from college on breaks (hence the 8 month waiting period). After trying several salons, I have found THE ONE! Rachel gave me exactly what I wanted and asked for (an updated cut and highlights). The last time I had highlights, I told my former hairdresser to not make them so light... when it fades, it gets brassy and I also asked her not to put tons of streaks in the front. I have been going to Weeds for about a year now and I love it. The location is great with a parking lot for customers and the staff is very friendly. Merisa has styled my hair for about 8 years and I followed her to Weeds. She has done lots of different colors on my hair from red to many variations of blonde. I have had long hair as well as very short and every time I am very happy with her consistent work. I love her! Unlike many stylists, she listens to what I want and gives me suggestions too. I really appreciate this about her as many stylists can be pushy and won't listen. As a student working two jobs she is very flexible with my schedule and the prices are great. I've been having my hair cut by Kellie Moodie at Weeds for about 2 years. She is great! I can always get in for an appointment. When I take pictures with me, she takes the time to look at them and tells me honestly how they would work with the texture and length of my hair. She really helps me to decide what will look good on me, and I value her honesty. Kellie is a smart woman and I enjoy talking to her while she cuts my hair. When I read Nikki's profile I was impressed by the warmth of her smile, how she was holding a ceramic bowl of color in her hand and that Nikki actually said she enjoys working with gray hair. Nikki is an artist. She gave me the most beautiful color, a few foils and balyage that she placed delicately throughout my hair giving it a warm, sun-kissed natural softness followed by the best cut I've ever had. Nikki brought my hair (and me) back to life. In addition to her professional expertise Nikki is a beautiful human being. Kasia has supreme talent in styling and coloring hair. Her masterful creativity is balanced with listening to what I am trying to accomplish, resulting in a great cut and color, not to mention an extremely satisfied and loyal client. She cut my hair for the first time last month and the grow out actually evolved to another fabulous slightly longer hairstyle, so I planned a second visit for a trim and root touch-up. Trimming my hair is usually more difficult than styling it because it grows so thick and wild in the back of my head as it gets longer, but Kasia aced the trim and I am not walking around with that horrid grow-out bulge. Does this sound too good to be true? It gets better ... there is no waiting time for my appointments, Kasia's prices are very reasonable, and her efficiency in cutting and coloring allows me to be in and out of Weeds in 90 minutes. I've been seeing Kasia since 2008, when she was at another salon -- when she moved to Weeds I went with her. I've never been "faithful" to a particular stylist/hairdresser before, but now it's been nearly ten years that I've gone to no one but Kasia. A few specific thoughts: - When I was younger, my hair had great highlights and was naturally a very streaky blonde. Over time it got really dishwater blonde. Kasia's highlighting has covered the bit of gray I have and made my hair pretty much exactly the way it was naturally. - Her cuts are equally good. She always does exactly what I want and has a good sense for my no-fuss style. - I really appreciate that when I go to Kasia, I don't feel like I have to make small talk. Sometimes we chat, sometimes we don't, and when we do chat, often it's about books (she's a huge reader). - The salon itself is very cute and has a good vibe. Also parking is easy. read more
