Was referred to MyLe by my in-law and I'm not disappointed at all! I was able to find street parking right down the block and found my way to this cute hidden salon. The front of the salon has a patio with a seating area that gives calming and serene vibes. MyLe greeted me at the door and offered coffee or hot tea. I opted for hot tea and was brought the cutest tea book with a variety of teas to choose from. I chose my tea and MyLe made me a warm cup that was accompanied by biscottis. MyLe and I previously chatted about my hair goals and I provided a picture to reference. As my session began, she was very straightforward about each step she was taking and confirmed the lightness that I wanted to achieve. MyLe exhibited her expertise and professionalism to a T! She knew exactly what to do and her artistry as a stylist showed throughout my session. There was no need for me to feel nervous at all. In general going for a rare real haircut is akin to going to the dentist. I procrastinate far to long because it's not fun....all that sitting still, puzzling over my straggles, snipping, foiling, small talk...I'm waiting for a way to do a haircut online. So today I dragged myself in to a salon with great Yelp reviews. Wow! Right Angle in Rockridge is such a fresh salon...it has a beautiful, chic-yet-friendly toy store meets barber shop meets art gallery vibe! Nice surprise! My Cosmetologist, the young, adorable Alex with his denim apron, dark curls, and easy-going charm made me feel right at home. Whew. And Alex didn't even flinch as he looked at my long neglected straight mop. I gave him very little direction (because I'm clueless) other than to cut it, add highlights, and go low maintenance because I am a slacker and go months without a haircut. Great haircut...a couple of hours later, after a lovely conversation and hot tea, I have lovely light brown-to-golden-blond soft balliaged loose waves at shoulder-length. Perfect. Such finesse...Alex specializes in blow-outs...so the finished look is polished but natural. I admit it..I had fun! So please add Right Angle and Alex to your bucket list! Ariel, ladies and gentlemen. I've been a loyal client of Ariel's for several years, so when she moved on from the business I previously visited, I was keen on following her to Right Angle. This is a bustling spot in Rockridge, a couple turns off College Ave. Thus, expect traffic. For parking, I go in for the adjacent neighborhood, but if you're lucky, you might be able to grab a spot on the curb. The classy interior's got stations for stylists to do good work; there's no receptionist or front desk you report to at the end. It's simply an appointment with you and your stylist. I like this system, and of course, whenever I'm in town, I'll book with Ariel for the usual haircut. Ariel's got unparalleled attention to detail, takes her time, and does not put the scissors down until you're satisfied with your hair. For my first two years living in Arizona with substandard hair care, I'd schedule flights to California solely for my Ariel appointments! I have been getting haircuts (and some color) from Mele Alberta, one of the stylists and colorists, for years and literally the last haircut I got from her, about four months ago (I went on an extended trip and couldn't get back) STILL looks good. That has been one of my favorite things, as someone who travels a lot, that her cuts stay good looking for, well, at this count, at least four months. The worst hair cut of my life. The worst dye job of my life. Loretta DeBrule suggested a base color similar to my own hair with "soft subtle brown highlights". She gave me very dark brown/black hair in the front /bangs and milk chocolate in the middle section and medium brown in the back with "manilla envelope" orange colored highlights in sporadic weird locations that make no sense in location or how or where my hair grows. She colored my hair first and then cut it when it was still wet. Anyone who claims to cut curly hair knows you don't DO that with curly hair. She also pulled my wet hair down and cut it... I saw it spring back up and new right then and there that I was in trouble. I told her I was trying to grow it out. I had not had a cut in over 4 months (from very very short to ringlet curls).... she cut half of it off. HALF! I had "wings" sticking out above my ears!!! She told me my hair was "angry" from being handled too much when I told her I look like "Little Orphan Annie". She said to give it a week or two and to get back to her if I had an questions. I found her on www.naturallycurly.com. She came highly recommended... big mistake. I asked her if she was familiar with cutting naturally curly hair and she assured me she was. Then Leslie decended from the hair heavens and rescued me from the world of shapeless, style-less hair. Over a period of several months, I've seen her work and have always outwardly admired her cuts. Not to mention, the girl herself always looks incredible (she cuts her own hair). I finally made the decision to break through my Salon phobia and book an appointment with her. Good move Jenna K., good move. Leslie is an exceptional stylist for the following reasons: 1. She actually listened to what I wanted. I brought in a picture (long layers, side-swept bangs), but how many times do you actually leave a salon looking like the photo? Well, I did. And I've got the endless compliments to prove it. And it was because Leslie took the time to carefully interpret exactly what I did (and did not) want. She posseses a friendly, yet consultative manner that completely separates her from even the swankiest stylists that I've used in my lifetime. And I've done 'em all - NYC, L.A., S.F. She's better than all of them. 2. She told me how she was going to cut my hair, where, and why - I wanted to keep the length but add volume, so she was careful to trim my ends and layer more toward my crown, where I told her I wanted more weight. DONE. Effortlessly. I wanted side-swept bangs, so she was careful to keep them at an angle that would allow me to achieve the look I wanted. She took her time with me and was meticulous about every snip. 3. She was not at all scissor happy. I can't count how many times I've asked stylists to keep my hair long, but I always came out with shorter hair than I told them I wanted (okay, I counted, 16). I thought it was some universal methodology espoused by all stylists. I left Leslie's golden chair with the same long, silky hair - just 100X more stylish. 4. She took into account that I'm extremely no-maintenance with my hair - I want to wake up looking amazing without spending a single minute blow-drying, producting, curling, flat-ironing, or even combing. Sounds impossible? It's been several days since my cut with Leslie and I wake up every morning looking as I did when she cut my hair. Without LIFTING A FINGER. She gave me exactly what a wanted: an amazing cut with zero maintenance. How did she do that?! 5. She does free bang trims. Although whether she does or not is really inconsequential, because she's so talented that I'd go back to her regardless. 6. She's extremely affordable. Cut, shampoo, conditioner, and blow out was $65 - I've had considerably less impressive cuts done for almost double the money. 7. I look awesome! I have nothin' but love for Cherie! She's a rockin' lady and skilled with the scissors. I have never, repeat, never gotten a haircut or color that I didn't love. She very clearly puts a lot of attention to detail in her work and it shows, not just when you walk out of the salon but even a month later in the way your hair grows out. That's the sign of a great haircut, it keeps looking great. The salon itself has a great location and the vibe is very relaxed inside. They've usually got some tunes playing and local art on rotation on their walls (yay for supporting local artists!). Parking is always a cinch as they are right on that cusp of the commercial/residential area so I never have to walk more than a block or two from my car. Be sure to get an appointment as the ladies who work in this salon are usually in high demand! (Although they do take walk-ins when they can.) I expected to explain to Tyler what I wanted, get a little feedback, and then get the cut started, but Tyler spent at least 30 minutes learning about my hair, my lifestyle, and my expectations for styling. I have NEVER felt like such a valued client before, and really appreciated the time she took to understand what I wanted and what would work best for my hair type. The consultation was smooth and pleasant, Tyler asked all the right questions and even texted me some photos after to show similar examples she'd done. She's a warm, personable lady who listens well and is interesting in working with the client. If you have a strong idea of what you want, like I did, she'll tell you what's possible and what her plan is. I suspect she's also great if you need suggestions or an opinion, because she clearly has a great eye. Long story short, Tyler NAILED IT! I went to see Tyler after a friend recommended her, and I can honestly say she gave me the best haircut of my life. I don't have easy hair to work with. I'm a swimmer, I used to box dye my hair, and my hair is super fine. Oh, and I hadn't had a proper haircut in two years. When I went into the salon, I couldn't rake my fingers through my hair. While most hairdressers would have recommended to just chop it all off, Tyler worked a miracle. She barely cut off an inch, and added incredible layers that added volume, playfulness and fun to my mane. She's also brilliant, and was able to rattle off every nuanced scientific fact about hair, products and how to make your mane hair look healthy. The best part, though? My hair looked and felt amazing. Not to mention the fact that her prices are beyond reasonable and on the lower end compared to other salons in the area. I am fixing my review of this salon because they FIRED my stylist. To hear it from her she didn't do anything to warrant the action. I LOVE Jocelyn and will trust ONLY her with my hair - so firing her was the WORST action they could do. Their salon just dropped two stars!!! Genevra has been my go-to stylist for all my hair needs since 1998 (wow!). During that time I've had a pixie cut, shoulder length style and everything in-between. I have never been disappointed and she's been great at suggesting new styles as my personal style has changed over the years. Recently I had Genevra start colouring my hair as my grey was coming in faster than I'd prefer. She has an incredible knack with mixing colour and finding the right one. I love the tone she picked for me as it is close to my natural colour but more vibrant. I'm getting loads of compliments. I met Juliana when she worked at another salon in Berkeley and I've loved her ever since. There aren't enough kind words in the world to describe how amazing she is both as a hair/make up artist and as a human being. She's got massive talent but without all the ego that usually comes with it. My hair is really hard to work with. It's baby fine, thin and inconsistently curly. Two weeks ago I had an important 4 day work training conference to attend. Since I work in the fashion industry myself, I had to look well put together. I had made an appointment with Juliana, but at the last minute, there was a scheduling snafu and my appointment had to be moved around. Juliana was so professional in the way she handled it. She went way out of her way to make sure I would be taken care of and that my hair would look perfect... and it does. In fact, I've never been disappointed with anything she's done, and I'm one of the hardest people to please. Right now, my hair looks so good. Juliana did a great job of cutting it into a really cool, asymmetrical wedge shape. It looks, full, curly and just the right amount of edgy. I don't even have to do much to it in the morning, which I love! I just wash it, put a little goo in it and let it air dry... and I get tons of compliments. I don't even live in Oakland. Tyler is amazing & the sweetest hair dresser I've ever met! I got my hair "ombre-ed" by her and she knew exactly what she was doing. The color looks so natural and fades well from dark brown to blonde so it doesn't look like my hair was dipped in color. After all the bleach, I thought my hair would feel like broom bristles, but it is surprisingly soft! Tyler used only the best products in my hair & taught me how to take care of my hair to keep it healthy. She also gave me a large sample of this serum I could temporarily use until I bought a deep conditioner. She's also super easy & fun to talk to! I went to right angle at the end of summer for a keratin treatment, it was simple enough and nothing went wrong then so I was relatively trusting when I went in for a color a few months later. I told the woman, who's name I believe was Tina(??) that the previous year I'd had a bad experience with a woman at Super Cuts who had given me a Tara Reid blonde shag when i had gone in for a natural looking dip dye. at the time, I blamed myself for being too cheap, waited a year for it to recover, and decided to try a more upscale salon, hence right angle. 'Tina' was new at the salon and talked a lot about positive energy and how lucky I was to be a teacher working with those 'innocent angels' in preschool (this should maybe have been my first warning). I nodded, yes of course, they were all angels, so eager was I to appease her. I also told her that the money I was spending was money I had saved up for a while and that it was a big expense for my budget but I really just wanted to feel a bit better about myself and so figured she understood the importance of this trip for me. I felt like we were starting to get each other. and yet.. Long story short, by the end of my visit, I had 1 eyebrow dyed dark brown, the other was still blonde but i guess she felt that since the skin above it was stained brown, that it was fine. additionally the stylist didn't wash the dye out of my hair and so by the time I got home and finally washed it out, my hair was falling out in clumps because it had been on my hair for hours too long. and lastly, after washing and drying it, i realized that the 'trim' she had given my shoulder length hair, now barely reached past my ears and made me look like a cross between prince charming and a PTSD shiatsu. Look, I know its dumb but I felt so wronged, I just cried and cried and didn't leave my house the whole weekend trying to figure out what to do about it (every day i wrap it up in a frizzy bun and try not to think about it). When I called the salon to complain, I wasn't even asking for my money back and it was certainly never offered to me, I just wanted the owner to tell her stylist what she had done to me so she wouldn't do the same to someone else. I specifically told the owner PLEASE DO NOT have the stylist contact me because I didn't want to argue with her about the results. however, the very next day, the owner gave the stylist my number and had her call me directly while I was at work. I was furious and will never, ever trust this salon with my business again. totally unsatisfied. I usually like to read a book or a magazine when getting my hair did, but Tyler and I talked and talked the whole time.
