I went to three other barbers before I discovered Annika, each of whom had had decades of experience. None of them could fix what I called "the Bozo the clown effect". My hair would flare out to the sides regularly and had to be brushed down several times a day. I told Annika about this problem and she layered the hair on the sides in such a way that it now stays down perfectly essentially all the time. I can even wake up in the morning after a full night's sleep and discover that it still looks almost as good as if I had just brushed it. Annika is amazing. I dipped into Wood Salon on a whim in anticipation of a long weekend event with the hopes of a pleasant experience and a decent haircut. My expectations were exceeded! My stylist was Eliza, who was warm, welcoming and communicative. Eliza made sure to consult with me on what I was looking for, answered my questions on styling and care, and was just an all around delight to converse with. The salon itself is calm, cool, elegant but not stuffy, and had a great playlist to ensure there were no awkward silences but also not distracting. I have a hard time picking salons because of my hair type and my comfort with people being close to me, but I'll definitely be returning to Wood Salon and Eliza. Strongly recommend! read more

I have been searching for a stylist like Traci for a long time. My hair is a bit complicated with several different personalities which makes getting it worked on a bit stressful for me. I have really thick wavy/curly hair with some odd straight sections in the front. I'm done fighting my hair and have accepted its quirky nature after many years. For some reason it's been difficult to find a stylist who is understanding of my hair and current needs. Until I met Traci. She's a great listener with a kind vibe and really a lovely person to start with. I've been looking for someone to call my stylist for the last two years since I moved up here, and I finally found her! I saw Stephanie Nelson yesterday and she checked all my boxes: Relaxing shampoo - took her time with every step, didn't rush through it, made me want to close my eyes and relax. Perfect amount of conversation - I personally don't like to chat the entire time, I like to decompress and she could probably read that. I've had a few stylists who talk to me the entire time which comes from a nice place but it's tiring for me. Listened to what I wanted (and didn't want) for my cut then asked follow up questions to make sure we were on the same page. My cut came out exactly as I wanted it and she asked if I wanted anything adjusted before we finished. The salon itself has a relaxing vibe and makes me feel like I want to come back to be in that space. It's never been crowded or loud inside, and there's street parking in all the neighborhoods around it. Berkeley is a cute area to be in. read more

Since I moved back to the east bay, I've been going to Wood Salon which has been a great salon. I see Stephanie Nelson for a cut and color (~$200), and Stephanie and everybody at the salon are great. The salon is beautiful - open and airy and a great place to spend a couple of hours. Since the pandemic started, they aren't allowing folks to hang out in the salon for appointments so you have to wait outside. Inside the salon, there are fewer clients and each stylist can only work with one client at a time. The amenities (beverages, magazines) have been scaled back but I don't think that's a big deal. read more

I had a haircut in January with Julie Wood. She seems really grumpy face whole time and especially unhappy that I requested that I keep most of my length. I came in for a trim and shape, all the growth I had carefully tended for 2 yrs was quickly cut off. I stopped her when she started absentmindedly chopping and slicing away at the crown. OMG. I am older so my hair takes a looooong time to grow out. What a disappointment and waste of time. I guess I'll just spend all year growing this one out (again). Beware. She does NOT listen to what you want. Long layers, at least chin length, round layers with snipped in ends are what I asked for. Short choppy and "old lady" looking (super short around the crown and short length) is what I got. Cry. Time to wear a hat for the next year. Uneven layers all around the base of the neck too (I have straight hair). Go elsewhere. It is 6 months later and I am still rocking short old lady hair and got mad enough to write this review. I can't believe HOW SHORT it was cut. read more

Edit: the fact that the owner responded to this review in a manner that is a) non-apologetic, and b) insinuating that what happened to me wasn't shady, is all y'all really need to know about this establishment isn't it? 1. My review clearly states that nobody informed me of the cancellation charge when all I was trying to do was change my appointment. 2. A mass email being sent out is such an irrelevant fact in this situation. I have no idea when a "mass email" went out, but I do know that nobody reads mass emails and I most likely saw it and went about my day. There's no way you can charge people and rely on having sent a mass email at some point in the past 3 years, lol. 3. Again, it was - at most - 3 hours into the 48-hour cancelation window. It really was not last minute. I totally understand and support having policies in place to protect service workers from losing income, but what I don't understand is having no empathy for an otherwise loyal customer of several years that happened to be in a shitty situation due to a global pandemic. read more

Traci at Wood Salon has been cutting and coloring my hair for seven years and she is an amazing stylist. My hair is thick and wavy, and she is a master at cutting long layers, point cutting to blend the layers in and bang trims. If I tell her I want to keep my hair long, she "dusts" my ends. When I wanted a classic shag cut, she gave me a "piecey" tossled shag that looked so modern. I highly recommend Traci at this comfortable and welcoming salon.​​ read more

Full balayage color and cut success! I had a weekday appointment with the "Queen of Balayage", Deborah Chai, and she fulfilled the exact look I was hoping for. I had 2 photos saved on my phone from Instagram to show the color and cut I wanted and she knew exactly how to achieve it. I also showed her a secondary photo for potential color and I loved how honest she was and quick to say, "Nah, let's go with the first color you showed me." I really appreciate that guidance and I felt like I could really trust her. For all the work she did, the appointment was just over 2 hours, which I thought was really efficient. Oh, and she's good conversation too! Booking online on their website was easy and I liked how it gave me a quote upfront. It was $280 for the full balayage and color. Their system also made sure to send me multiple texts and emails to remind me of the appointment. Great and safe neighborhood (I walked there from downtown Berkeley). They gave me complementary water and everyone else at the salon seemed super friendly. read more

I initially made my appointment thinking I'd just go in for a trim, but then Stephanie helped me change my whole look! For starters, she was super chill about me accidentally missing my appointment without notice due to traffic on the bay bridge. In addition, she was just as hospitable and made me an appointment for just the next day. When I got into the salon, I unloaded on her that I wanted a trim but I also wanted to change up my look. My hair was getting heavy and had lost its bounce; I practically always had it up in a ponytail even though I have a nice natural curl. She gently consulted me and let me know in a respectful way that going too short wouldn't be great for my texture, and that she wanted to add body and take off weight by doing some framing around my face and layering instead. About an hour later, and I feel completely new! I love my new look, it's much more kept and professional-looking, not to mention healthier. I will always recommend her!! She made me no longer afraid to get layers. read more
