Horrible horrible horrible! I booked 3 weeks in advanced, I was suppose to go from black mostly all virgin hair to red which they assured they could do. Dayian was so inexperienced that it's insane they would allow her to touch anyone's hair. She applied bleach all over my scalp and roots she kept going back and forth to mix more bleach and she left it on for god knows how long as she cut someone else's hair and chatted for a long time. Eventually panic started setting in for me since I know you're suppose to bleach roots last. She saw me panicking and just stared and laughed l to herself and the other styist told her she should definitely wash it off. At this point my hair was so light at the roots and dark in the ends and she tried to gas light me and ask why I was stressed. She added the red dye and literally left it on for 10mins!!! Washed again! It obviously didn't look good so she asked the other hairstylist what to do and she recommended Demi hair dye to roots and told her she had to leave in for 30! Like how do you not know that???!? Anyways I left with hot roots, dry hair and uneven color. My scalp was so dry from bleach and the 3 washes. It was a horrible experience! I spent over 3 hours there because of her stupidity when really it should've taken 2 hours tops. Horrible. Never again, I will never again trust anyone with my hair. read more

Ruby was my stylist and a gem just like her name, so sweet and kind she made me feel so welcomed. There is something very personal about having one's hair done and I am always nervous. I came to Ruby today with a badly grown out and boxy haircut. I am trying to grow out my hair so I wanted 3 months to have it fixed. I didn't have to explain much because she already saw what needed to be done. In one hour of being there, I felt beautiful! My hair has never been cut and shaped so well, everything just flows! I don't really like lambasting a business with a negative review, but I feel that I owe it to the other yelpers to remain truthful to my experience. While staying in Berkeley, I had an itch to get an ombre done to my hair. Being an Asian with fine medium length hair, I wasn't sure if it's a good idea to proceed with it. I decided to go to Eclipxe based on the glowing reviews of the other yelpers and thought that I could trust my hairdresser to advise me on the style and deliver the cut and color that would at least meet with my satisfaction. To cut the long story short, the delivery fell FAR short of my expectation. In fact, I left the salon with the same exact hair as I entered it with. Why? My supposed ombre turned out looking like a botch job with my lower layers super bleached blond and I felt like a half-way lion from the Wizard of Oz. I mean, my stylist (Ruby) says it looks great and wild, but holy macaroni, I really looked more like an old alcoholic housewife in distress. I asked her to tone it down, which she did, and voila, within a matter of 10 minutes, my original hair color reappears on my mane once again. As for the cut, it was more like a very small trim as my bangs are the only part that got noticeably shorter. Why does Ruby deserve a 1 star review aside from the above debacle? First, I felt like I was just another errand for her to run in between her other chores. Aside from the foil service, she spent very little time on my hair and more time doing other things. Maybe I'm spoiled by the awesome salons in SD, but this is also the first time I didn't get a head massage during the wash. My conditioner was also nonexistent; hence, the "wild"/frizzled mangle of hair. And oh, yes, let's not forget the fact that I was charged $120 for the subpar service. At first, she was going to charge me an extra $20 for having to correct her botched job, but after having spoken with her regarding how I didn't get what I wanted at all, she decided to give me that "discount". Her reason for still charging me $120 was simply that she still spent time on my hair despite my dissatisfaction with it in the end. Wow. If you turn this situation around, it'd be like paying for a failed repair service; a plate of food that you didn't get to eat; or a product that you didn't get to keep. If you want to get a trendy haircut, color, and style, I suggest you stay far and away from this salon. In hindsight, I wish I did. read more

Salon is nothing fancy.... you're not going through a portal or worm-hole to be ushered into a trascendent Zen-type world sporting decor with matching color palettes on the walls. I was on the hunt again for a new stylist. I wasn't satisfied with my haircut at Albany Hair Salon. I tried Vika's but no one answered the phone and the woman would get back to me days later. So the reviews on Yelp seemed pretty positive about Eclipxe. My appointment with Pedro was great. I only wanted a trim because I am trying to grow my hair out and it needed some major thinning since my hair is super thick. He gave me a trim, a subtle layer, thinned it out, and showed me how to style my hair since I have natural waves. Very nice and personable guy. Salon appeared clean and tidy to me. After reading yelp reviews for longer than I should have of Eclipxe, Hermosa and various East Bay salons, I decided on Eclipxe fort. my new haircut after finding out my old stylist in Sacramento is retiring. Eclipxe was in my price range ($40 for a cut) instead of 50-90 like most places I called, and they could do more complex things than a Supercuts. I am very picky. I am not trusting with these sort of things. But you yelpers did not steer me wrong. Eclipxe did a fantastic job. I managed to get a same day appointment and I didn't even have to bring in a picture. "I want a steep A line bob, no bangs" I said and my styllist Sumie pulled out 3 pictures and asked which one I wanted it to look more like. I had an amazing experience with them, amazing conversation, etc. The ambiance is lacking. I would have liked to be offered a cup of tea while I waited, but I can live with that. Still 4 stars for an outstanding cut and reasonable prices. But the mark of a truly good haircut is in 3 weeks time. Does it still hold its shape by then or will it fall out of shape in 2 weeks? Greg is absolutely incredible! I brought my 10 yo son for a haircut after he refused to cut it for a whole year. Greg was gentle and considerate and my son loved him. He has thick curly hair and it was almost impossible to find someone who would be a wonderful human and so knowledgeable with curly hair. I needed someone to salvage my hair, which was given terribly choppy, uneven layers. I don't remember the name of my hairdresser (sorry!), but she was a really nice and understanding Caucasian lady with chin-length brunette hair at the time. She figured out that since my "layers" were so uneven and short, the best option would be for me to get an A-line bob, which would be trendy and still keep some length. She did a great job with the haircut, and she made it so my hair grew out really nicely with no odd parts sticking out. The salon is located in a nice neighbourhood and it's only a couple bus stops away from UC Berkeley. It's definitely another option for all you shaggy or mousey-haired students out there. It's comfortable and clean, the staff is nice and everything is fairly priced. read more

Trying to find a stylist you like after you move somewhere is probably harder than finding a good dentist. My experience at Eclipxe was one of those unfortunate detours on the quest of a decent head of hair. When I arrived no one was at the desk and no one seemed to care that I was standing there waiting, although the place was packed (there seemed to be a lot of people's family members and children hanging around in addition to the patrons. Not a good sign - and strange? Doesn't your family have somewhere else to go besides watch you get a haircut?). The salon is dirty with dye sitting around and dust sitting on the half-empty make-up displays (can't imagine what Tabitha would say!). They only take cash or checks. I was finally helped and assigned my stylist who was sweet but that's about it. It was a very lazy cut. She spent 20 minutes altogether, and although I specifically asked for a LOT of texturizing, she only gave me simple layers and a tad of texturizing, leading to the inevitable, unwelcome "triangle head." And then the coup de grâce, get this: instead of fully blowing my hair out using a round brush, she seemed to realize that my hair was thicker than it looked and (probably) wanted to get rid of me to move on to her next client, so she used a flat iron while my hair was still wet to flatten it out and send me on my way. My hair was moist and had a very strange shape to it when I walked out of the salon. People say they like this place for the deal. The price is better than high end salons, sure, but if you look goofy walking out of there, what did you pay for in the end? Splurge on the extra $20 and go to Artbeat or Elixir. Go to Eclipxe if you want to look like you took a time machine to the '90s to get your hair cut. read more

I will NEVER go back. Ever. If you walk out of a hair salon and want to cry, something is wrong, something is VERY wrong. First of all, as I am sitting getting foils put in 2 inspectors from the state department came in for a random inspection of the salon. Thats all fine and good, except that its pretty gross to sit there as the inspectors loudly point out all the violations that the salon has. Biggest one? All of their brushes still had hair in them... eek! And some of the tools (clippers and etc were not sterilized... uh awesome). So that was not a good start to my experience. Secondly, I gave my stylist (Pedro) a card from my old stylist in Boston, MA (who I miss terribly) which had a cheat sheet of EXACTLY how I get my hair done, partial foil highlight, single process in between darker, and toner. She even spelled out how far apart to put the foils, what color to use, and how long to apply toner... fool proof right??? No. All I asked was that the card be followed, and that my hair look natural (I am a dirty blonde type color naturally). All he did was blonde foils, no darker toner... so now the ends are totally bleached out and my roots look worse than ever. I will never. ever. go back. read more

In America women pay 4 times as much as men do to get their hair cut, even in Berkeley, which is supposed to be the home of Subverting the Dominant Paradigm! My female friends will fork over $80, $100, la de da for a hair cuttin', whereas for some guy perspective, Barack Obama pays $21 for his haircuts and Michael Bloomberg pays $20. Presidents and billionaires. Eclipxe is, therefore, at $45, both a bargain for women and pricey for men. I did like my haircut and the staff, but I am going to take a pass. read more

After years of having long hair I decided to cut it all off and I wouldn't trust just anyone to cut it off. My review is not a bias review just because I knew the stylist but its based entirely on her skills. I asked Marissa to hook me up with an A line cut with a lighter color, and boy did she hook me up! Take a look at the pics and judge for yourself. But Marissa definitely pays attention to what you want and she delivers. Eclipxe is the right price, hassle-free (esp appointment wise!), and located conveniently near the 51 stop. So that is why I am now in a committed stylin' relationship with Sumie. I just got my hair cut again by Sumie yesterday. As usual, she did a great job and was fun to talk to as well. She normally sends out greeting cards with a $5 coupon during the holidays that you can use for up to a year. I totally forgot where mine was, but she gave me the discount. I tipped her more anyways since she did such a great job. No complaints here. What I do have to complain about is how beleaguered these hairstylists are most of the time. Why? No one answers the phone! I've been coming here for two years, and it's always such a hassle to get in contact or to make an appointment. When I *do* get an appointment, it's been frequently mischeduled because the person on the phone is either absentminded or they are just way too busy to handle a phone. Who knows. I'd give Sumie herself four stars, but I really hate dealing with another stylist that I won't mention who always messes up my appointment scheduling. Overall: three stars. read more

When I first came to Eclipxe probably 5 or 6 years ago, I had a feminine bob cut. As a budding gender non-conformist, I wanted something more androgynous and fitting to my personality. I had gone to Panache and the guy there gave me some weird femmey pixie cut that did not fit my face at all. I got an appointment with Kat from Guam, and after giving her my concerns about previous cuts, and the style I wanted, I came out feeling amazing and confident, and red frosted tips to boot. I had never felt so beautiful until that moment. I came back to Eclipxe a while after that to get another great cut, but Kat was gone, so I got an appointment with Sumie, and have been going to her when I am desperate for a cut ever since for the past 4 years. During our first consult, I'm pretty sure I said quite a lot, trying to make sure that she didn't give me a femmey cut. I had a picture of Rufus Wainwright looking really twinky, and she took it from there. She made sure I was all right with the length, and I would keep telling her to go shorter, and she had no qualms. I came out feeling refreshed, and every cut after that, I just leave it to her. When times are tough and I'm pinching pennies, I do go to the cheaper Chinese/Vietnamese ladies. But when my hair grows out, you can tell it was a bad job. I always go back to Sumie after enduring the growing out phase to fix it. While it might seem like just a simple guy's cut, Sumie gets my personality, and takes charge in making it look good and grow out looking good, too. THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY, so come prepared. Ruby was fantastic! She was super friendly and walked me through what she was doing. During the hair cut, she would periodically ask for my opinion on the look so far, and for my permission to do more. I'm very happy with my new look. Sumie did a great job with J (my guy friend). His hair is straight and fine, and difficult to style when it's too long. Sumie gave him something short (~1 in. on top, slightly shorter on the sides) with lots of texture, and it looked really good.
