I happily stumbled across this awesome kid friendly salon for my son today. Originally, I was going to take him to our usual spot in Albany CA, but I did not realize the salon was closed on Monday's, which will be another reason why I will no longer be taking my son to that salon again. Ugh I hated the fact that the other salon always closed at 5pm during the weekdays because I'd have to leave work early just to make it on time to get my son's haircut. Not to mention it really annoyed me they only accepted cash. But I had tolerated it because the haircut was pretty good. It only cost $20 and they would give my son a lollipop. However, discovering Ixia Salon was a blessing in disguise. Not only were they opened on a Monday but they immediately took my son as a walk-in and were super friendly. Ugh which also reminds me, I also had another salon I'd take my son too in Berkeley CA, where we live. But that hair salon only had one person working so walking- in with no appointment would be a long wait. So finding Ixia Salon was exactly what I needed: open Monday-Friday until 7pm, more than one stylist in the salon and the option to use a credit card for payment. More importantly, my son was very happy and relaxed at this salon. I explained to the stylist that my son is autistic and he has severe delayed speech so I asked if it would be okay if I stayed close to him so I could also help give him instructions. I wish I would've asked for her name because she was very supportive and she totally understood the look I wanted for my son. She was very detailed with his haircut. But what really amazed me was when she asked if I wanted my son's hair washed first before she started to cut the top part of his hair. I know that sounds silly but no one has ever offered to give my son the full salon experience. Every stylist just sprays water on the kid's hair and cuts away. Not at Ixia Salon, the stylist gave him the full experience and my son loved it! She washed, conditioned his hair. Then proceeded to cut his hair, blowed dry it, and then styled it with hair products. His haircut came out really good, especially since he has annoying cowlick on the back of his head so that parts of his hair would always stick straight uP after every haircut but NOT THIS TIME. The stylist really did an excellent job in cutting and shaping his hair to look smooth! It is like the stylist at Ixia performed a miracle and got his haircut to look sharp. Best part, the entire service was just $35 (not including tip). I know $35 may seem a bit much for a kid's haircut but not for a parent like me who has an autistic child. I'd been just letting my hair grown and chopping off six inches or so when it got too long for about 20 years. Last week, I went a bit too far and then it was ragged so my kid tried to help fix it. It made it worse. I call it an unfortunate home barbering incident. One of my kids goes to school in Albany so I looked around here on Yelp for a salon and settled on Ixia. I was able to make an appointment for the next day. Sonia repaired the horrible hair tragedy with a cut that flatters my hair type, kept most of the remaining length. And I decided to also go dark purple at the time. I'd not had any hair coloring done in a very long while and thought the really cool colors were behind me in my youth. I chose a very dark purple and it came out fantastic. In the sunlight it's a really gorgeous almost electric purple but looks very dark indoors. I'm so happy with my new cut and color. Sonia did a fantastic job and I'd recommend her to anyone that needs their self-butchery repaired. read more

I'm not usually tempted to give reviews but I genuinely got such a bad haircut here that I want to spare others of my fortune. I was sitting at heads up across the street, and the wait was too long for me to manage on my lunch break so I decided to give Ixia a try as there was no wait there, and I saw the reviews were mostly good. Sonia was nice enough, and seemed to understand what I wanted. 1-2 inches off the back and face framing layers (showed her a pic for reference). I have easy to manage straight hair that is already a bit layered. She cut way more length that I wanted, but fine, fair enough. I pretty much just accept at this point there's not a stylist out there that understands to preserve length. The real kicker was the face framing layers. She seemed unable to do them. I was constantly correcting her, and she kept asking if that was good, was enough. I feel like, I, as a person sitting in the stylists chair, shouldn't be the one navigating the expert. She was able to achieve one side ok enough, but the other side was super choppy. When I came home, I realized the back was extremely chunky and uneven. There was literally a 1 inch section just awkwardly longer than the rest of my hair. For the first time in my life, I had to take scissors to my hair immediately post haircut in an attempt to manage the uneven portions. I will have to get it professionally fixed elsewhere. I also declined the shampoo service, and my total was $50. I will definitely not return in the future. read more

Brought my three- and five-year-old boys for haircuts before Christmas. A middle aged woman who appeared to be an owner or senior person cut both my boys' hair. First alarm was she left a bald spot on my younger son's right temple. She cut his bangs off completely on one side and left them partly there on the other. I should have cut my losses and left. But I wanted to get the boys cleaned up for Xmas. On my second son, she left the bangs uneven and crooked. I asked if she could straighten them out. She said "I could, but it'd be ugly." I didn't like hearing her say ugly in front of my son. Also I doubt it's good business to tell the customer that what he asks for is ugly. What was ugly was the haircuts she gave my boys. We had to fix them at home. The bald spot will grow back. At $25 each, I gave no tip. I don't know how they manage to stay in business on Solano. Wasted fifty bucks and time. I can't say enough great things about Ixia Salon. I am so glad I found them on a walk up Solano. The sign and pretty, artsy, open room caught my eye, with my favorite music wafting out the door. I peaked my head in to see if they might be able to help me take some black dye out of my hair. Yvelisse, one of the stylists, came over to me and consulted with me right away. She was so friendly and kind - and then the owner, Sonia, also came over to me as soon as she could, while working with another customer. They told me what the process would entail and I made an appt for Tuesday. My job scheduled changed and I was able to come in earlier - I called in and they said I could come an hour earlier. Yvelisse was there when I came (she came in especially for this appointment - WOW). The process of removing dark dye is not easy and kind of scary - many people don't do it (and a lot of people don't know how to do it without bleach). Both Yvelisse and Sonia worked on me, and they used an eco bleach that wasn't as intense. The left it on for less than an hour because they were monitoring how quickly it lightened my hair - so I appreciated that they didn't just go by the cookie cutter directions, but were super detail-oriented in making sure that it lightened just enough but not too much. It didn't cause any damage. Then - when it came to adding color back, I would have chosen the wrong one. They helped guide me in realizing that the color I was hoping to bring back to my hair wasn't as dark as I would have thought. I'm so glad that I listened to them - they were right on! And not only that - both of them told me that if it turned out it was too light, they were happy to do it again and to darken it (which would mean dyeing it again that same day). They didn't want me to leave without it being just right. They even helped me take a look at it, in the process of blowing it straight and flat ironing it, so I could decide if I wanted to change it. That's another thing - my hair is extremely thick, frizzy, and curly. I didn't expect that they would blow my hair straight, which is a huge endeavor for me, or anyone else. That was just thrown in there. This whole process took about 4 hours, because it was very laborious. I cannot believe the time, attention, and detail they spent on every aspect of this process. They even studied up to make sure that the eco bleach would work well with the natural dye I'd used before (to guarantee that it wouldn't harm my hair). They did a phenomenal job. I've never seen my hair this color or this texture (and oh...I have tried) - it's so smooth, and the color looks as if I have highlights. Yvelisse also taught me how to style my hair (because I'd had a bad haircut in another state, where I got bangs cut very short - and that doesn't look good on a curly-haired person). She showed me that if I blew-dried just the bangs to lengthen them, it would look good. She also gave me tips on what color to use to fix my roots at home. Everyone - from Yvelisse and Sonia, to Sonia's husband Carlos who also works in the salon and is super hospitable, has a great vibe and makes this salon feel like somewhere you can feel comfortable in (and also trust that your hair is going to be in really good, expert hands). All in all - this is a really great establishment and I wish I had known about them prior. They do really great, quality work. And their rates are competitive! I had Googled other salons on Solano and in Berkeley that charge more, prior to finding them. Because I know about the dye removal process, I have to say, I don't think anyone else could have done a better job and I'm so grateful for the amazing work they did on my hair! I would like to start off by saying the wax specialist is extremely kind! She was a pleasure to talk to but one thing irks me to no end and left me completely disgusted.... I went to get a Brazilian, and she double dipped. I immediately told her I did not want to be waxed anymore unless she gave me fresh wax. She did not hesitate for a second and changed wax pots. She also said next time I come back to let her know and she will make sure the wax is fresh. A part of me feels bad writing this but I want everybody to protect themselves from unsanitary practice. She is talented but make sure double dipping does not happen and if it does please say something! read more

First of all, I love that this side of Solano doesn't require you to pay for parking! Bonus points. To the actual review of this place, I loved it! I got my hair layered here. Nothing fancy. I had my hair cut by the owner and she is the sweetest lady ever! She was very patient and didn't rush through the haircut, even though she had another appointment after me. She even curled my hair after the haircut to show the different layers! Overall, I was very pleased with the service and the prices aren't too shabby, especially for Solano Ave. They average from $40-$60, depending on the length of your hair. What I really like about this place is that they don't have ranked beauticians. Why would I want to pay $80+ for a simple haircut from a "Master" beautician or whatever they're called these days. Used to get haircut from Sonia. The first few times were great but soon she started to give terrible haircuts - she gave such a bad haircut to my wife which took 2 months to grow out and get it fixed by someone else. Btw, Sonia and her husband owns the place and there is no use complaining there. Liz used work there and she was a great person - really took care of each customer. We starting to see Liz instead of Sonia. Which was great. . .except they made it hard for Liz and she left. So, we followed Liz - 2 blocks away - to Fashion Hair Design. I was new to this salon and thought not much could go wrong for a root touch up. My hair was previously dyed beautifully at Keter salon in Berkeley. I had balayage highlights. Sonia brought me swatches to choose from for my root touch up. I chose a color that I thought best matched my true roots, a light ash brown. 15 minutes into my magazine I realize she's dying all of my hair! I quickly stop her and she says "oops". She said she would put blonde back into my hair if I didn't like the root color being done throughout. Then once we are washing and drying she admits she grabbed the wrong bottle of hair dye, noticing that my hair is essentially black!! She said "you chose a 6 and I grabbed 6.7 but it will fade soon" She then tries to tone it down and add blonde to it. This did nothing. My roots are black!! My hair now looks ombré with black to blonde. The contrast is so hideous! I've always gone for a natural look and I absolutely hate it. I look like a skunk and this was $85. My dad, brother and I all go to Sonia's salon. First of all she is great! She provides a warm home like atmosphere that is very comforting, i even fell good about practicing my Spanish with her. Anyways she always does a great cut and shampoo, Ive been going so long she now just says "same as usual Juan?" . After shes done she always asks if i want gel or wax, she often tries some of her new products on me, with my consent and knowledge of course, which i love. Second, Carlos is always very polite and friendly, taking my jacket , or just making sure I'm comfortable. Third, I have never had my hair cut from any of the other Stylist but from what my brother told me( him not being a yelper) that the young lady he saw was very good also. all in all IXIA salon is my go too for all my hair grooming needs. This salon has a pleasant atmosphere, dedicated stylists, convenient hours, and reasonable rates. They cut male and female hair. Their products smell terrific and no one tries to sell them to you. My husband's hair looks great--neater but not severe, thanks to a good mix of clipper work and scissors. My own short female cut looks feminine and the back is just as I specified. I've had a situation where my hair was chemically burnt off and was not feeling myself of how I looked. My family convinced me to go see Sonja today and I finally did. My first impression of her salon was its really clean and organized. She spoke little English but she did an amazing job with my triangular graduation haircut. Hi, After being with my last hair stylists for almost 10 years, I finally moved to a stylist closer to home. I found this nice salon on Solano Ave just by chance. What I love about Ixia is that it's reasonably priced ($25 for Men's haircut/shampoo) and that it's not too hard to find street parking. Also, I am always able to find an appointment on any day of the week. Major +++. I have gone to both Sonia and Liz and they are both great. They pay great attention to detail and are always willing to make any adjustments if I am not completely satisfied with the cut. Liz is particularly great if you want to have lots of conversation and talk about pop-culture during your appointments. I'm actually surprised that for the price you pay and location they aren't busier. read more
