This review is late, but better late than never. Sara was fantastic! The care & time she took with my son Jordan, who is 9 was so appreciated. I feel most hair stylists rush when they see a kid and don't put care into it. When we arrived she offered him something to drink (just like they do when I come for my appointments) and I thought that was nice. She stopped plenty of times to ask my son how he was feeling about the way the cut was going and she asked for my input as well. Jordan ended up with a cut that still kept enough length that he was happy and the layering in the back has been perfect for me because his hair no longer turns into a matted mess each night with the accompanying brushing battle in the morning. Walked into this salon last minute and was looking for a refresh. The front desk staff were very accommodating and were able to get me an appointment for this afternoon. Bethany was my stylist and she did such a great job of understanding what I wanted and helped me visualize what could work for me. I was looking for a refresh and she delivered! I have been going to Grove for about two years to get my hair cut by Joel. I used to buzz my hair myself, but he recommended the two-block with a high taper for my Asian hair, which fits me perfectly. I always look forward to catching up and talking with him whenever I'm there. Joel's tapers are very clean, and he is always open to modifying the cut if I want to try something different. He was also very patient in teaching me how to style and volumize my hair so that it didn't look like a bowl cut at home. And also since I haven't been to a salon until the past few years, I got to say, shampoo time IS THE BEST. Definitely received top notch care at Grove yesterday! The salon has a really chill, clean vibe. Everyone was super friendly and the complimentary drinks were an extra little surprise! I've always walked by this Salon and finally decided to try them out and I'm so glad I did. The vibe in the salon is so clean and nice. Immediately upon walking in I was greeted and checking in by the front desk person. I got a layered cut from Jenna (a stylist in training) and I love it so much. She was so kind and gentle with my hair and checked in with me multiple times to confirm I was good with any changes. Because she was in training another head stylist also checked in and helped and they were also kind and amazing. My highlights look great, but she didn't review the cost of the cut/color with me beforehand and I almost keeled over when the receptionist told me how much it was afterwards. I've gone twice to Grove Salon to get my haircut by Joel, and have LOVED it. I have very curly, but fine hair, and I can be picky about how I like it to be. I've been to many different hair stylists, and I'm not always 100% happy with what they do...but with Joel I am! He's very easy to talk to about what I want, or what I'm thinking I want to try, and he's always attentive and knows just how to make it work. Let me start by saying I'm a wee bit biased as I have a family member who works here. But...I'm not one to usually spend much on my hair upkeep, usually just go to one of those drop in places and let them have at it. I agreed to go in as a hair model for Joel, as he perfected his skills to become a stylist. He was guided by a senior stylist, and as a team they gave me an amazing cut. I then went back as a color model, and again walked out of their blown away by my trendy new highlights. With a new baby in the home, my excitement to (finally) get my haircut was overshadowed by anxiety of leaving the house during covid. Fortunately, Grove did a great job of managing covid protocols to make clients feel safe. I was checked in at the door, given hand sanitizer to clean my hands, and while I affirmed a series of statements re:covid, I had my temp checked. Only when I was cleared was I allowed to enter for my cut. In hindsight, I recall requesting an outdoor cut (for an extra level of safety) and was told that could happen. I was ultimately placed inside and very close to the door for fresh air- I guess it works. It was great to be back in the chair and chop the locks off! Always leave satisfied! I'm not quite sure where to start; I've been putting off this review because I feel I'll never do the salon justice. Sondra Williams has been doing my hair for almost 15 years, and I could not be happier that Grove is her home. The salon is beautiful and relaxing, meticulously run, and full of wonderful, talented people. Their plant game is on point, too! Sondra is so patient and thorough with my long hair. Even though it takes the better part of the afternoon, she is always so gracious. She listens to exactly what I'm hoping to achieve, reiterates it back to me or shows me examples to ensure we're aligned, and takes her time to get it just right. She took my hair from a horribly damaged black/bleached "fashion mullet" (I know, I know - it was the mid-2000s) to the long, healthy hair I have now. Hair aside, she is also one of the kindest, warmest people you'll ever meet. Kevin, the salon owner, is always so welcoming, and the entire staff is made up of fantastic people who are great at what they do. I always look forward to seeing everyone. **Do NOT come in for an appointment as a model. You may not be treated like a human.** I had a model haircut appointment with an apprentice. My only interactions were with the apprentice and his mentor/senior stylist. The apprentice seemed kind and thoughtful, though very early in his stage of learning and confidence, which is fine. I was incredibly disappointed, though, by the way I was treated at the salon by the mentor/senior stylist. I fully appreciate that a model appointment requires patience and flexibility and still, there should be some reciprocal respect for the person that is receiving the service. It is in fact, their hair, and a style they will need to have after the appointment. Not just a moment of practice. I didn't feel like I was treated like a person, but instead like a mannequin head with hair. The mentor was unkind and impatient with me and with the apprentice. He physically and aggressively moved the apprentices hands to "correct" his positioning while having scissors in hand. I would never step foot in that salon again with the level of disrespect coming from a senior stylist toward me and toward the apprentice. There are plenty of other quality salons with lovely stylists and sadly this is NOT one of them. The reduced cost to be a "model" is so not worth this crappy treatment, disrespect, and a sub-par haircut. read more

This review is long over due! I've been coming to Grove Salon for almost a year now. The front staff are friendly, welcoming, and super helpful when it comes to scheduling appointments. They make scheduling so easy. I love the entire layout and aesthetic of the salon! Definitely a plus. Lastly, I'd like to give my kudos to my hair stylist, Celine. It's always a pleasure having my hair done by her - she is personable, detailed, and is willing to answer any and all questions. She's also attentive to the needs of my hair health and works with me to keep my hair looking the best. The salon is located near downtown Albany. Parking can be a bit challenging as it's mostly street parking. With that said, I recommend coming 15-20 minutes early to your hair appointment so you have enough time to find parking near by. read more

Grove is hands down the most wonderful, peaceful salon to get a haircut at. I've been coming to see Karen for almost a year now and she is so, so amazing. Been coming in to see her for basically the same haircut every time, she does such an awesome job at texturing and framing my layers to complement my face like, so flawlessly. I've also received balayage services from her and it's always a beautiful and thorough job. You know it's good when you only really need it touched up about once a year. The price is worth it. I'm also a little bit of an introvert, so I have moments where we don't talk, but she never makes you feel uncomfortable about that! We still have really great conversations together and remember little details about each other that make me come back to her. The reception and other stylists are always welcoming and smiling. I'm appalled by the gross management style at Grove salon. This is because, I didn't like my haircut, and as a result was told to never come back. I got my hair cut at Grove and didn't like it due to a tremendous amount of short texturizing that left my hair looking thin and extremely shaggy. Some pieces were as short as three inches from my scalp right on my part! So, I called the front desk to tell them this. They offered to have me come in for a redo haircut, but the only thing to do at this point was cut MORE hair off which I didn't want to do considering the issue was that it was too short already. So, I stated that it would take at least six months to grow out some of these pieces so I wanted to get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks to close the gap between the shortest and longest pieces. I was met with a snide remark about scheduling my next appointment for six months away. Finally, I was able to schedule an appointment with a different stylist for 8 weeks away and was given a partial refund. At this point I was at least somewhat appeased with them attempting to resolve the situation, but then... Two days later I was sent an email from the manager stating any future appointments for me would be cancelled and that I could never come back to the salon. As a previous stylist, and someone who currently works in customer server, I'm deeply disturbed by how this situation was handled. I strongly urge that any customers seeking a new salon do not make an appointment at Grove. read more

I went through dozens of Yelp photos from salons until I found a bunch of gorgeous short cuts by Karen Williams at Grove. Made an appointment and have been THRILLED! Every six weeks I sit in her chair -- she asks what I want and I say, "Your regular magic, please." I have SUPER fine hair and not much of it, so most cuts end up too spiky or too flat. I had the same stylist in San Francisco for 15 years until I found Karen. She's amazing! And the people at Grove are totally kind and professional. It looks like a snooty place because it has that fancy salon feel, but I'm always welcomed with a smiling face and an offer of coffee, tea, or water. Grove Salon is terrific! read more
