My stylist retired after 20 years. With my anxiety looming, I head out to try and find a person that knows what they are doing with curly hair. I had tried this salon a while back, and decided to give it another try. Jazz is a young and very skilled hairstylist who now has a chair at Reflections. She's amazing! She listens to what you want and does a great job in styling hair, so much in fact, that I also brought in my three children. All three have a very different hair styles from short and modern for my youngest son, to layered for my daughter and then long and layered on one side and short and traditional on the other for the 17 yo. This would be a test of her skills with such different approaches to hair. She did fabulously well and is so nice to work with! She is so patient, I even brought my elderly mother-in-law in (who has Alzheimer's), for a haircut and she had no problem taking good care of her hair. We're all set for Summer highlights next. I have the world's most awful hair -- very thin and straight. I went to Diane for years and she has been the only one who made me look nice. I've since moved out of state and miss Reflecftions and Diane so much. I tried a couple of hair stylists where I am now but no one can replace Diane and so I gave up and give myself haircuts myself now. That said, I don't look so good now but I'm just sitting here wishing I were back at Reflections! I will always miss the good feeling I had when leaving their cute salon in El Cerrito. I first heard about this salon from an email newsletter I receive from curly.com that I subscribe to. I have wavy hair and have always had difficulty finding a stylist that "works" with my hair as opposed to against it. The reviews about Diane were wonderful, so even though I am extremely leery about trying new stylists, I was willing to take a chance. I'm so leery, that when my stylist left on maternity leave and never came back I resorted to trimming my own ends. It had been so long since my last professional haircut that ALL of my layers had grown out and my hair was basically one length and reached to the middle of my back. Yep, going on almost two years since I was willing to let someone new touch my hair. I am so happy that I took a chance! Diane talked to me at length about my hair, it's tendencies, what I wanted, previous haircuts I liked, etc etc. I have thick hair which takes time to cut properly,especially when incorporating layers and fringing and she took lots of time on my hair. At no point did I ever feel rushed or that it was a nuisance to cut an abundance of hair, which I have experienced with other salons sometimes. My hair is very heavy so when the layers grow out it looks straight as opposed to wavy. My new haircut was perfect. All my natural waves were visible again! I'm so beyond disappointed. I made an appointment two months in advance because I know they're always booked. I came here before in the past and I absolutely adored the work of the stylist who unfortunately no longer works there. Nevertheless, I came in wanting a balayage and even showed a picture to my stylist of what I wanted my hair to look like. Long story short, I paid for highlights that are barely visible and unlike the color in the photo. Essentially, my hair did not change. Three stars because of the haircut and hospitality. Howdy Yahoo! I may have finally found my hair stylist to grow old with. Of course time will tell, but I found a very skilled person to "Highlight" my life! I had gone to Trish at Reflections 10 months ago after (yet another) bludgeoning by a 'colorist'. It was orange and purple, people. Trish did the best she could with the damage and I went 10 months wearing her work. Today I came in to get some blondness back and shazam! It was like the first highlight I got (10 stylists ago). Her rates aren't low, but they aren't high either. (Unless I'm totally out of the loop) I'd call them in the mid range. But for someone do 'get the job done right', what price?! Reflections is awesome! Affordable, professional, and the people are great--when you're there, you feel like part of the family and they definitely want to include you. My husband and I both see Trish and love her. Cash only, but there's an ATM in the 7-11 just up the street in case you forget. (my lady haircut is $45, and free bang trims for regular customers). There are usually only 2 chairs open at a time. Bonus: salon puppy! I forget her name, but she usually just sleeps in her dog bed and looks adorable. read more

I stopped in yesterday after reading the reviews - I was in desperate need of a fix for a bad haircut. Trish was really friendly and helped "diagnose" my hair issues right away (I have very fine, straight hair and had just gotten an A-line bob that looked really chunky and weird). They were completely booked for the next few days, but I really wanted it fixed before my company's holiday party next week! Trish was like, "OK, I've got 15 minutes before my next client, I can see what I can do." She fixed it up and it looks great! She also gave me some great tips for styling it, considering I refuse to spend an hour (or, honestly, more than 5 minutes) each day blow drying, curling or adding product. I will definitely go back for a real, non-emergency haircut! Thanks again, Trish! (One thing to note: They do not take credit cards! I did not get the pleasure of Diane doing my hair, but she does seem to be quite popular-poor lady never got to sit down in the 4 hours that I was there as she did customers back to back. I went to Reflections Hair Design for the first time yesterday. Dianne was my stylist and OMG... SHE IS AMAZING!! She's incredibly knowledgeable and extremely talented. I have looong, baby fine hair and for years, I've gotten the same cut - all one length, blunt. After consulting with Dianne, I decided to try adding some long layers in the front while keeping it long and blunt in the back. I walked into Reflections looking to cut my hair to donate (again) and to get a hair cut that says "I may be a thirty something Mom of two, but I'm still cute damn it!" An hour later I walked out with two pigtails in a bag and the cutest hair cut I have ever had! Trish was great. I was not sure exactly what I wanted to do with my hair after we cut enough off to donate it. So, Trish had me look through some magazines to get some ideas. She was patient and helpful. Most places I have been want to know what I want. Well, I don't know. I may have some direction I think I want to head in, but I need a professional to guide me. I came across Reflections after reading reviews on Yelp. I am so glad my first attempt at locating a new stylist failed. Fate allowed me to call Reflections and, as fate would have it, I was booked with Trisha and looking forward to having a horrible haircut repaired. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Trisha herself and we were ready to get down to business. She listened to me describe my desired cut and was very professional as I tried to bash the previous stylist. This is a down to earth salon that can give you what you ask for at a reasonable price. Trish gave me the color and cut that I wanted. I have straight, fine hair. I just called to arrange an appointment and the person who answered the phone sounded like she was doing me a favor rather than be appreciative to have a new client. She said that Jana was not taking new clients. What is she, a doctor? And the first available appointment for Tricia was in June. Ok, maybe they are busy but no need to have a star attitude. I thanked the person who answered the phone and she said "no worries". Diane the owner is the heart and soul of the place. She and Jana are excellent at everything---precision hair cuts and styles, highlighting, color, perms, perms with color, you name it. But they also listen closely to what you want and will deliver exactly. Diane will give you fun, young, professional, neat, modern, cutting edge or even the "same old same old." You only have to ask. Also, they are experts on hair products. Diane took my shaggy haired teenager and gave him a cool hair style that is easy to care for and reflects his personality and tastes perfectly. There are families who are sending their 3rd generation to Reflections for their hair. They will trust no one else. Their prices are very low compared to salons in the city. Only $30-$40 for a high quality cut. For a while I went to Yosh in the city but get the same high quality for about 1/2 the price here. This is not a blue haired client salon, but I have been going to Diane for 30 years--when she was literally a teenager just starting out (probably in violation of child labor laws). read more

Based on Yelp reviews I tried out Reflections Hair Design, and while I did like the price and the cut (and their ability to fit me into the schedule) I wasn't particularly comfortable in this salon, both physically & mentally...I found that while talking to my stylist,another stylist would chime in immediately and so it wasn't a personal conversation anymore... the whole room was focused on what I was saying and commenting. (Not that it was anything interesting or controversial-I was a little bit surprised at that..because on a first meeting I just want to get to know the person who I'm working with. )The space is small so maybe that just happens. No big deal. The decor definitely leaves something to be desired (outside is not appealing at all and inside not so great) and the selection of products isn't that interesting. Usually when I leave a salon I get compliments for the rest of the day on my hair ,which is the fun part, but this time no one noticed. I gave 3 stars because the cut was good, as I asked for, my stylist and reception were polite, likeable, and the price was great at $45 but I don't think I will return there (definitely not for color where I'd be sitting there for more time. A-Ok seems to fit) Maybe I would prefer a little more attention to the atmosphere and ambiance. read more

Reflections is a hidden gem in El Cerrito. They only do work of exceptional quality and as a result have many loyal, long time customers. Some people drive many, many miles to have an appointment. Everyone here is extremely friendly, and professional. Their prices are reasonable and service is excellent. Everyone I have recommended to them has loved them and these friends have included a wide span of ages. I was nervous, because let face it, changing stylist is like getting a root canal. I have been seeing Odessa on Piedmont, and she has been great, but I got tired of driving 1/2 hour each way. So I yelped "stylist" in El Cerrito, and Wow! How have I missed this place. I have lived here since 1988, and have driven past this place probably a thousand times, and it turns out, there is amazing talent next to the 7-11! I booked with Trish, and held my breath...(remember, it will always grow out...) and...she was amazing! Seriously, I RARELY like my hair when I get home, I usually have to play with it to appreciate it, WELL, it looks amazing! Thank you TRISH! I just got the best haircut I've had in many years from Trish. I'm funny/picky about getting my haircut and had been going to another salon for 10+ years. But after too many late appointments, ear-bending commentary and inconsistent cuts (missing entire parts in the back, cutting the sides way too short), I decided to give Reflections a try as my son liked Trish's work and am very happy with the result (and it cost less, too). Ana S. incorrectly pointed out concerns for the Hair color used here. Upon further investigation I learned that the comments posted are untrue with regard to Wella and animal testing. There is NO animal testing conducted for any Wella products. If you have concerns please check with them as I have at 1-800-935-5273. As for their parent company P&G, they eliminated testing of cosmetic products on animals 10 yrs before the EU took effect in 2009. It's a complete disservice to Diane & Jana to dis them for untruths. If you haven't been here you are missing out because the stylists here are some of the best artists in the Bay Area. read more

Diane and Janda and Trish take time to learn about clients and to understand what you want. My husband has started going to Reflections, too (He looks more handsome--no more starchy cuts)! Unprofessional and rude. They only take checks or cash, which they don't tell you until it's time to pay, and when you say no one told me they say "Really? We try to tell everyone that the first few times they come," like you're lying. For my third scheduled appointment, I was on the way from work, remembered I needed to bring a checkbook, called to say that I would be late, and then after my commute there was told that I was too late to be served. This even though she still had 25 minutes before her next appointment and all I was getting was a trim. For one out of the two appointments I had that were actually honored, my stylist started working on my hair late because she was in the back dying her own hair! And both times my stylist only spoke to me in short, curt sentences, instead gossiping about other people with her co-workers and other customers that seemed to be there all the time. Very strange, clicky vibe. Definitely not making the drive to this place again after disrespectful service three consecutive times. read more
