I booked an appointment with Grove because the salon itself got such good reviews. The person I was schedule to see was Taylor C. I asked for a layered cut but got no layers. It was an extremely bad haircut and a waste of $100. Plus, after the cut was over, it was styled very badly. I'm very disappointed. I had to fix it myself when I got home. This is from my wife: I got my first cut and color with Chase and she is absolutely amazing! She is an expert hair stylist, very attentive and responsive. I have naturally curly hair and wanted a bold new look, but needed help deciding what to do. During the consultation she asked the right questions. I brought in pictures of what I had in mind. She offered great realistic suggestions and I LOVE my new hairdo combined with perfect color!! While styling my hair she showed me how to use the tools I already own. She also was great at explaining which products would help smooth and tame instead of frizz out my hair. From the beginning of my appointment Chase took the time to hear my concerns, she gave great feedback and so far I have gotten so many compliments from others about my hair. I also appreciated that when I walked into the salon I was greeted, checked in and offered a beverage. It is open, bright and very clean. They really care about the customer experience. I thought I'd try this salon since the reviews are so great. I didn't have a great experience with this salon, I got a haircut, color correction and balayage. I had to do some corrections for the haircut, the front part was longer than the rest, making it look weird. The color correction was good, but the balayage is barely noticeable at all. My total was $380. Was is worth it? Absolutely not. So save your money ladies, go somewhere else. read more

I had my first haircut in 11 months at Grove yesterday and it was also my first time going there. I was 15 minutes late. And I was really worried I would lose my appointment as with Covid all salons are so restricted. I called to let them know. They were so nice and said they might need to modify but come on down. When I arrived my appointment was with Kevin ( the owner) he asked the right amount of questions and chatted enough but not too much. The salon was open airy and took all Covid precautions. Most importantly with my long crazy curly hair. I literally got the best haircut I think I have ever received. I wanted to keep my hair long but get rid of the heaviness so my waves and curls wouldn't be dragged down. Normally most stylists take too much off the length to achieve this. Not Kevin. I have never had my hair done by a professional before. This was my first time and I am completely blown away by my experience here. Making an appointment: Very simple. I called in and told the receptionist what I wanted to have done. He asked me a couple of questions for more detail and gave me a couple of options and dates. To my surprise, I was able to get in for an appointment in the next couple of days! Wowwers! Appointment: I got Karina as my hairstylist. She is amazing! She was professional, friendly, attentive, and had so many amazing stories/experiences to share. I am very impressed with her attentiveness and attention to detail when it came to what I wanted for color and style. She made sure she understood what I wanted and always checked in with me along the process. Karina made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole process. She repeatedly asked me if I needed tea or any beverages, if the water was too hot or cold (when washing my hair), or if I needed anything in general. Absolutely loved her! Oh and my hair came out AMAZING! I have never felt so good and pretty before. But Karina made it happen! After the appointment: I received a few sample of what was recommended for my hair. Also, a few weeks later I received a handwritten card from the owners of Grove. This completely blew me away... Who writes cards anymore? But I absolutely loved it and am so grateful! Mediocre haircut, and extremely unkind customer service by the owner, Kevin, which others on here mention as well. I had been a loyal client and shared a concern related to health and my disability, wrote a respectful email explaining a situation and the response I got was I was no longer welcomed at the salon. Details: Called prior to a color appt thinking I had a fever but then tested on 2 other thermometers and realized that the first was broken. Oops. Called back within the hour explaining that I had been mistaken re the fever. Was told not to return until 2 weeks. Tried again to explain this over email as well as how using temperature alone is not okay since people with chronic illness often have low grade fevers. Explained that they should use temperature plus symptoms check. The Dpt. of Health gives salons the option to use temperature + symptoms. Not only did Kevin not care to engage in courteous kind conversation with me, but he kicked me out of his salon for even bringing this up. Totally rude, overreactive, and unkind. I was at that point willing to just wait two weeks and just agree to disagree. Was totally uncalled for to be asked not to return. He also made up info that i had been rude to his staff which is beyond untrue. I had great relations with his staff, always tipped them well- even after my last haircut which was rushed. I don't think the stylist cared about the cut she was doing on me. They refunded me for the haircut which was the least they could do so they get one star for not causing me any more trouble. I had good color treatment here in prior appts but I wouldn't choose to go back since the management Kevin models is unprofessional and unkind. I went here for a couple of years, and I really liked my stylists. But they consistently weren't able to get my highlights to the shade that I wanted. And at the last visit, they ended up orangey-red. The stylist said that it was because my hair was too dark to get lighter, and then mentioned another Asian woman whose hair she'd struggled with. At this point, I finally put it together that almost all their clientele is white and that they seemingly just aren't as skilled with people of color and naturally dark hair. I found another salon with a diverse clientele, and the stylist there immediately got me shades lighter than Grove ever had, and also taught me how to protect my hair from damage from the color treatment -- which no one at Grove had ever said a word about. Grove is so expensive, and I thought I was paying for the best...but it turns out, that's just not true. read more

Kevin worked a miracle with my highlights that were 9 months grown out and horrible grown out bob/bangs haircut. I legitimately went in with many challenges from overdue appointments and grown out bangs and left with awesome hair. I have not had this good of a color/cut in many years. I am always nervous when I try a new salon. Is it going to be way more expensive than I anticipate? Will I be disappointed and have to fake smile that I like it in the end? Do we chat? Do we not? She is super skilled, but also realistic and takes into consideration what I'm willing to do to style my hair and gives me a cut accordingly. Everything is clean, and even the restroom is impressive. I come here for Florence, because she is an ace at hair. She cares about what she does, and it shows. Her great artistry and skill shine amongst her generous, caring nature and suave attention to detail. And to top it off, I love talking with her too; she is perceptive and aware. I LOVE Christina and Kevin at Grove. I am extremely picky about my hair, having had a wonderful relationship with my last stylist/colorist who moved back East, she was a really hard to follow. The salon is a good mix of high-end quality without the pretense and attitude that usually comes along with it. I started at Grove seeing Christina. Christina really listened to what I wanted and my description of hair issues, made good suggestions and then gave me a fantastic haircut and beautiful highlights. When Christina was really booked up, I got my cut and color with Kevin, and now I love them both! Kevin is the sweetest and really makes me feel welcome. He has done a terrific job with my hair and he gives an amazing shampoo massage. Oh man. I can't believe I haven't left a review yet. Nothing has been the same since Kevin came in to my life! I've been going to Grove for about 10 months now and it's an absolutely fantastic salon. I love the product lines they carry, the atmosphere is great, and I have always gotten outstanding cuts and color. Honestly, I paid more for shittier cuts when I was living in LA. It's kind of a bummer they aren't open on Sundays, except that of course that means the staff actually gets to enjoy a little bit of the weekend, so I guess I can forgive them. First time at Grove and my experience was great! I was looking for a stylist who worked on clients with naturally wavy/curly hair and came upon Sondra. Sondra greeted me out on their cozy patio and welcomed me to the salon. We were on the same wave length the moment I explained what I wanted and showed Sondra some photos. I've never spent a hundred dollars on a hair cut (nowadays that seems to be the norm in the bay) but it was worth every penny! I was looking for a salon so I wouldn't have to travel to see my beloved stylist of over 5 years in Walnut Creek. I am always scared to find someone new, but settled on trying Grove. I called and made an appointment, and they scheduled me with Kevin. His haircut is amazing!! On point. I love it!! He did what other reviewers are saying - asked me lots of great questions, was genuinely interested in getting to know my hair style preferences and upkeep and such, and made sure to understand what I wanted and checked in with me throughout. I got a mixture of long and short disconnected layers, face framing fringe, and also cut so that if I don't style it looks good with my natural waves air-dried. He really did take into account my love of hair products, and let me see some new options as he used them on me. The salon gives an awesome little new client goodie bag with some samples, that Kevin handpicked for me, and two coupons, which I used right up! Well...it's 3 years later and I'm still 5-stars. This salon is amazing, every person there is a delight and Christina is a friggin magician! I'm there every 8-10 weeks for highlights - even though I could go a lot longer in between visits. I've been alternating conditioning treatments with cuts every other visit. I've had the same haircut for ten years and decided one random week to switch it up. I have fear every time I get a haircut that the stylist is going to cut it too short so I relayed that worry to the woman cutting my hair. I can't remember her name but she has curly blonde hair and is newer there but she gave me the best haircut of my life. Not only that, she checked in with me throughout it to show me the length. My visit to Grove was definitely an experience! I walk in, am immediately greeted by Carmen and Mariah, check in, and am offered a choice of coffee, tea, or hot apple cider (uhm, what?!) and then a plate of a variety of cookies. I had two cups of apple cider if that was even a question...and a couple cookies. The hair magician I was blessed with is Karen, who was incredibly friendly, welcoming, professional, and bubbly! She knows what she's doing. Karen really took the time to make sure that every strand of hair was the color it was supposed to be - aka I have no doubt she is a perfectionist. She even fixed up my ends just because! I'm not sure if it's a salon policy as well, but Karen made sure that I was okay with the price of the services that we talked about and even broke it down into steps before moving forward - this definitely took the anxiety out of price guessing until the visit is over, and I really appreciated it! All of the staff were incredibly attentive and the employees here work together as a team - Kevin washed my hair and both Carmen and Mariah would check in to see if I needed more refreshments or cookies! On top of all of this, my visit took almost 5 hours!!! I never felt like Karen was rushing or felt inconvenienced by my apparently incredibly stubborn hair. She in fact was super patient with my hair and thorough through every step! Carmen stayed until the very end to attend the front desk and I'm very grateful to both of these ladies for being so graceful about being stuck at work on a Friday night. Very dissapointed. Being a client for 2 years, I called to schedule an appointed and i was asked to provide the 3-digit security number of my credit card. I didnt fell confortable giving that information and i was told they COULD NOT schedule an appontment without having my SECURITY NUMBER. By law any cashier cant ask you to read the 3-digit security number, so I would I read that on the phone? If the salon couldnt trust me, a client that never missed an appontment or a payment, why would I trust them and their "system" with this information that would allow anyone/anywhere to use my credit card and find more information about me? I wont be coming back because i wont provide such information in order to schedule an appintment. After 2-years, bye grove salon. read more

A couple of months ago I went to Sondra for the first time for a pretty dramatic haircut change (long hair to short choppy bob) and balayage. I've had a lot of different hair cuts, colors, and styles in my life and have been to many stylists. I can honestly say that I have never been as happy with a haircut and color as I am with this one! And I'm just as happy two months out as I was the first day! Not only did Sondra listen really carefully to what I was looking for (and deliver exactly those results) but her attention to detail was so great that she even stopped me on my way out to snip one more hair! I was looking for a new salon after I moved and after trying a few different places, decided to try Grove. This is my new salon now! I have been going to see Sondra and have been pleased with the results every time. As soon as I sit down she helps me visualize what I am trying to describe for how I want my hair cut and tells me how she is going pull off the look. It seems like so basic a step but it is always good knowing that the stylist knows the look I want before she picks up her scissors and I know what she is going to do. You don't sit in the dentist's chair without confirming what they are going to do to your teeth, so why would you not do the same with your hair? A sure sign of a good haircut is when you get compliments and I usually get compliments after Sondra's cuts. Whenever I see my mom, she never hesitates to let me know that wherever I get my hair cut now is much better than the last place I got my haircut after I had just moved. Also a sign of a great haircut is it grows out well. I was about to go into my next appointment with Sondra a few months after my previous visit and I got a compliment on my (old) haircut! My wife loves the salon, its fresh, modern and distinctly friendly design. The service is fantastic, the staff is very friendly and efficient. The salon is very clean, with lots of light, a back patio for relaxing and excellent service. My wife has been 'following" Christina for more than ten years and is very excited about the new location. Her hair looks awesome and she is happy every time. In fact, people stop her in the street and ask her about her cut. Christina's haircuts are stylish, yet very manageable. They are great for fancy events as much as for everyday use.
