Clean dry hair is cut with precision to customer requests and keep my cost reasonable. I made a mistake - called earlier in the morning that I'll pop by around 2:30pm. But I underestimated the traffic and I didn't get there til 3:10pm...and with only the two ladies, they don't know if they can take me since other people also called ahead. They asked if I could come back at 4 but I had a call around that time that I couldn't missed. I was about to feel super bummed and give up but they were so nice that they will make it work. I am forever grateful because at this point my hair needed cutting badly. The service was great - attention to detail and she listened carefully to me. Dry cut but super efficient and coming out great! I had a lot of knots and she was patient sorting it all out - I felt so much better after the hair cut. Tldr : - fast service with no wait if you call ahead to confirm - precise cutting of bangs, protractor measurement included lol Been going to this salon since undergrad days in Berkeley ( shout-out to c/o 2019!) since I wanted to stay within a student budget. Haircut is now $35, without tip, for long hair. Called 1pm on a Sunday to ask for availability that afternoon, they were wide open so I was able to immediately get seated at 3pm. Let me tell you the kind lady who cut my hair not only checked twice if the length was too short before cutting it but also she took out a protractor!! A protractor!! To measure my bangs I guess in the K-pop style where they go up 2 inches than where your bangs start to give the look of fuller, fluffier bangs. Lol. I didn't even know that was a thing! Conversation was minimal except for helpful questions where she confirmed if the length was ok. Come here if you want an affordable, great quality haircut! read more

Had some time after a Dr appointment and decided to spontaneously cut my hair. There was one person doing hair in the shop and they were working on someone when I walked in so I had to wait for a few minutes. No biggie. The person cutting my hair was great. They were really friendly and chatty. I was going from long hair to a French bob and it was my first time cutting my hair that short. They did a great job at explaining how short we would have to go to match the photo I showed them. They also braided and wrapped the hair we chopped so I could donate it later. I've been tempted to get a haircut for many months now. I was walking around on University Ave, noticing that there were pretty nice affordable options with pretty good Yelp reviews. On a whim, I popped into Lhasa Hair Salon on a late Sunday afternoon. There were only 2 ladies working when I came in, one older lady who looked like a manager, and one who was younger. They were both trimming hair for other clients, and I'd say I waited at most 15 minutes. When it was my turn, I got the older lady. She felt like one of those stern but nice and caring Asian moms. I showed her photos of hair inspiration. My hair had grown to my upper back, long enough for me to reach up my back and touch my hair, and I wanted a choppy, layered lob. It was pretty relaxing to have my hair cut by her. So relaxing, that I ended up nodding off and dozing during my haircut several times (I'm also very sleep deprived LOL)! She was never mad or showed impatience with me falling asleep, and she always just gently adjusted my head, and I would wake back up. She would also ask me for feedback throughout the haircut, asked if I liked it, if there were any adjustments, etc. My hair ended up being a tad bit shorter than I wanted (I wanted it to be shoulder length, but with the choppy layers, it ended up being about an inch above my shoulders), but it was still ridiculously cute! It's now so damn easy and quick to wash my hair and shower, and I get compliments on my new hair left and right wherever I go. Also, with tip, it came to just under $30! Worth every penny. read more

I came here looking for an affordable haircut and found this place based on reviews. Luckily, the person operating the salon was open to walk-in. I had a dry cut that was very fast with no styling or blow dry or anything and it was $35 which I thought was overpriced for what she gave me. I also expressed how I didn't love my end result (the ends didn't seem smooth) and she said I was "complaining" etc and did nothing to assuage my concerns. Overall, my haircut is decent but something I could do at home. Mainly, I didn't enjoy the customer service here and wouldn't recommend. read more

Paid $42 for a woman's haircut, which is usually what one pays in the area anyway. (So far I've tried the place on Shattuck and Francisco, and the other place by Guerilla Cafe on Shattuck.) Based on some Yelp reviews, the common criticism is that it's overpriced, but on the contrary it's actually the expected price for the area, i.e. similar places charge the same. The lady who cut my hair did a fast but thorough job! She did long layers in the front and subtle layers in the back. I'm not that fussy with hair, so here are my comments with respect to what I value: 1) All rough, dry ends were cut off, 2) Hair looks good in a ponytail in that it has volume, 3) Length is roughly what I requested (it's maybe half inch-an inch shorter). I called in advance just to make sure they had openings for an appointment in 15 minutes. I recommend doing so because there were just two ladies at the salon on a Saturday afternoon, so a third customer who came in a few minutes after me had to wait for ~25 minutes. read more

As a Muslim woman covering my hair, I needed to make sure if they were able to provide accommodations during the haircut process (a private, more secluded space where my hair was not visible to men). I called them beforehand and they kindly confirmed that they do have a private space in the back). The salon is very neat and the hair stylist was friendly. The area in the back was very well covered (with curtains and rollable shades). I was comfortable sharing exactly how I wanted my haircut to look like. She was very precise and I'm very satisfied with how my hair turned out. Women's haircut as of April 2021 was $35 + tip. Went to Lhasa Hair Salon for the first time yesterday and had a great experience. I had called the day before but no one picked up my call and so I decided go try a 9.30am walk in. Cost: $25 Service: 5 stars Work: Long-length haircut with layers Experience: Oggie (the owner) was the only one there at 9.30am, she shared that she works with her sister. I told her that I needed a haircut because I hadn't had one is about 6 months and the ends were hard to comb through (probably split/ dead ends). I wanted about two inches off, and shortened fringe so I could still tie it or put it away (pin) for work/ workout. She recommended a U back and I agreed. She was fast, friendly, and communicative, and handed me a mirror to reflect on the wall mirror to see the work she had done. Her hair design was great and she helped to shape it with a hair dryer blow as well. Wished I had done this before taking my passport photo! Will definitely come back! read more

I had not had a professional haircut since shelter in place began (a.k.a. The Before Times), and my own stylist has decided to keep her salons closed until Alameda and SF both have firm reopening guidelines in place. Anyhow, with the weather so hot this week, I wanted all of my hair trimmed but I didn't want to cut my own hair again because I knew there were spots I couldn't see in the mirrors. I sought out a moderately-priced salon on Yelp close to Downtown Berkeley BART, where I'd been running errands. I was very pleasantly surprised by how empty the place was and how elegant and clean the salon was. I didn't catch the name of the awesome stylist who booked me for my appointment, but she was calm and graceful and listened to what I wanted. I am in the process of growing out my pixie cut, and it was at an awkward mullet phase. She cleaned up the ears and back with a fast and stylish scissor cut for under $40, which was a bargain, especially since she was able to see me within 10 minutes of my call. If you're curious about Covid protocol, they just recently reopened. On that Friday they had two stylists working (everyone was masked and wearing nitrile gloves), despite having four stations. They leave their back door open for ventilation, and they will only cut your hair with your mask on, or you can hold your mask firmly over your face if they need to work around your ears. She even offered to give me a new surgical mask before she began my cut so I could keep my KN95 mask pristine. Very nice crew, strongly recommended. read more

A good place to get a cut with no-fuss! I was looking online for haircuts in Berkeley and many of them required telling your life story, having a consultation, having the shampoo/blow out service and paying for a somewhat bougie experience when I just wanted a trim for hair health. Price for a trim (on past shoulder length hair, not been cut in a year, did some thinning etc) was $35 which sounds about right for an Asian salon (the kind of salon I grew up going to) with the past few years of inflation. I'd be down to return for when I want a more specific haircut as well! In an effort to avoid paying $70+ for a haircut, I filtered Yelp by $ hair salons near me. Lhasa was one of the first ones to pop up and with an overall rating of 4.5*, it looked very promising. I made a phone call and got a next day appointment with no issues. Parking in the area is not the easiest so I ended up paying at the Berkeley Way lot behind the salon. I paid for an hour to make sure I had enough time for my haircut. Well, it turns out that the haircut was only about 15 minutes long. I'm not sure how I feel about that. It either means that the stylist was incredibly efficient and skilled or that she didn't take the time to do the detailed work. Either way, for $25, I'm not complaining. I usually never write a Yelp review but I found this salon online and figured I would give it a try and had a horrible experience. I had asked for layers and only wanted to cut a few inches. The lady then proceeded to cut my hair straight across and each of the ends were very uneven and when I asked for more layers, she said she shaped it the best that it would look for my head. My hair now has the ends flipped out because of the way she cut it and everything is so uneven and doesn't shape my face properly. The lady just kept cutting my hair shorter and shorter until I just got fed up, paid the price ($35) and just left because if the lady kept going at my hair, I was going to have a pixie cut at the end. Can't beat the price! Quality is good too. I called asking if I could just walk in, and the lady (owner?) said yes! I was 5 min away so I popped in. Was surprised that a wash wasn't part of the cut, but I guess I don't need to pay someone to wash my hair if I can do it myself :) And she said that it's better to cut dry hair. Hmm. I came here a couple months ago to get layers and the hairstylist did an amazing job!! I did a walk in and did have to wait 20-25 minutes since there were other people in the chair but they had a couch for seating and I didn't mind the wait. I have pretty long hair so the haircut was about $42 dollars with tip. My hairstylist really took her time to make sure both sides of my layers were even and blended together seamlessly. I'm not always super satisfied with the final product, but, I wait three weeks and come back for a different cut. Cut my hair about 4/5 inches shorter than I asked. She even commented saying "oops I just keep cutting it shorter and shorter" and then laughed. Because she couldn't get it even on each side. I wanted to still put my hair in a pony and now I can't even come close. even my layers look terrible and she thinned out my hair and told me AFTER she did it saying my hair was too thick... so not only is it too short it is no longer full. Worst haircut I've ever had. I didn't say anything because I get uncomfortable with confrontation. Plus it'll grow out eventually. read more
