She understands thick and fine Asian hair incredibly well and knows how to shape mine so it goes from ratty and generally unkempt to polished (and so much lighter). It can be surprisingly hard to find someone to do this kind of haircut (long fine hair) in the East Bay, but Irina really listens to the look you're going for. Her recommendations are always specific to your hair type, and I leave feeling less like I always have bedhead and more like I could be an art gallery girl in west village (iykyk).

We were having an 87-degree day in West Berkeley, which -- for those unfamiliar -- is hot for West Berkeley, a neighborhood where the default setting is breezy and cloudy and lovely and sixty-three degrees, the kind of microclimate that lets you own one jacket and never think about it. Eighty-seven degrees in West Berkeley is an event. Eighty-seven degrees with hair that's two weeks past due is a crisis. I have Asian hair. I've written about this before. It is coarse and thick and grows outward like a porcupine asserting its personal space, and my coping mechanism in Los Angeles was to throw $85 at a hipster barbershop every three weeks to make it stop. This worked in the way that all expensive coping mechanisms work -- reliably, but at a cost that quietly compounds until one day you do the annual math and feel ill. 2026 being what it is, and a dollar these days being asked to do about a dollar forty's worth of work, I needed a new tack. I asked an AI assistant for a good cheap haircut in Berkeley and got several suggestions, which I then searched on Yelp -- yes, the very Yelp you are looking at, imagine that -- for reviews. One thing I noticed about La Petite was that people mentioned Asian women cutting hair there, and the photos confirmed it. I had a thought, the kind of thought that sounds reductive when you say it out loud but is grounded in lived experience: Asian women probably know how to deal with hair like mine. This is not a stereotype. This is pattern recognition developed over decades of watching non-Asian barbers stare at my head with the quiet bewilderment of someone asked to solve a math problem in a language they don't speak. No shade intended, just facts. So I gave La Petite a go. You watch closely when someone new is cutting your hair. You can't help it. You're tracking every snip in the mirror, reading their hands the way you'd read a stranger's driving in the first five minutes of a road trip -- are we safe here, does this person know what they're doing, should I have said something three turns ago. About halfway through, I watched her take volume out of my hair in a way that hadn't been done in years -- not just trimming the length but actually understanding the architecture of thick Asian hair, where the bulk lives, how it falls, how it will eventually grow out, where it needs to be thinned so it lies flat instead of projecting horizontally from your skull like it's staging a protest. She knew. I knew she knew. I had my new stylist. Twenty-eight dollars. Twenty-eight dollars, and I walked out with the best haircut I've had in longer than I'd like to admit. That's $57 left over from what I was paying in LA -- enough to buy groceries, or three martinis at happy hour, or a pizza at June's, or whatever you buy when you realize you've been dramatically overpaying for a basic human service because you confused a cool neighborhood and exposed brick with competence. La Petite has neither exposed brick nor a cocktail menu. What it has is someone who looked at my difficult hair and knew exactly what to do with it, which is the only thing that has ever mattered and the only thing I'm paying for from now on.

They asked me if I was graduating, and I said no, I was meeting my fiancée's mom the next day. Five minutes before the haircut was finished, the stylist took a big chunk off my right sideburn. She cut it too high, which ruined the whole haircut, especially since my face shape doesn't suit short sideburns. I told her I didn't like it. I didn't overreact or yell, I was just uncomfortable. The hairdresser said, "Too bad!" and tried to dismiss the issue. I told her again that she should have asked me about the length. She then took it personally and told her boss that I was making things up so I wouldn't pay, saying, "They do this so they don't pay." What do you mean by "they"? Not only did I feel dismissed and treated unprofessionally, but also disrespected. I was upset after the whole situation, but even then I was willing to pay and didn't want to leave without paying because I didn't want to prove her point. Plus, it's not that expensive. At the end, the stylist said she had 40 years of experience. Well, after this, it feels like you wasted 40 years and somehow skipped the basics of customer service. Not coming back, even after being offered a free haircut. I would rather pay three times what I paid today for a standard service where you're treated with basic courtesy.

Virginia, you refunded my payment (thank you) and I wasn't sure whether to write this. I loved the haircuts I got from you before. But you cannot experiment on people's hair like this. And after this I do not think you should be coloring people's hair at all. I asked you directly before we started if you had knowledge and experience with blonde highlights and you said multiple times yes, and that you definitely could make it happen. But it turned out you had no idea how to do blonde bleach, let alone balayage. Once you rinsed out the bleach and saw how bad it looked, you didn't stop what you were doing to share what had happened. Instead of showing me the results, you applied a super-hot curling wand to give me a big hairstyle so I wouldn't notice the highlights. The wand on the new bleach left it with intense heat damage. The hair is falling out as I write this and my whole head stinks of burnt hair. This did not need to happen - you could have simply told me the truth, that you have no idea what you're doing with blonde highlights, and I would have been able to find someone who does, and my hair would still be healthy right now. Please let me be the last person this happens to.

I didn't even want to go back to ask to fix it because I should have noticed better I guess. And nobody likes to tell someone theyre unhappy with the work they did and then expect that same person to fix it. I saw people in there getting cuts and color and they looked great. Like I said, mine seemed ok until the color came out and the curls were undone but I just advise you research the stylists work beforehand....

Going on 3 years later and I am still seeing YESENIA for my hair, and have to say it has only gotten better! She has successfully helped me to grow my hair out to my mid back, while keeping the body and wave alive. She has taught me tricks to styling it, and I can now recreate that similar salon look. That look you know you love when you leave, but know you won't ever be able to do your self. So even though I can recreate the look, I have always had frizzy hair when i let it dry versus blowing it dry. Yesenia told me at my last visit about this new Keratin service they were offering, which basically is this amazing product she would flat iron into my hair, and in 3 days I could come back and have it blown out and that my frizz would pretty much be gone, cutting my blow dry time in half.... and even letting me wash my hair and go and have straighter hair with no frizz! This seemed almost too good to be true. Again, I never wash and go, unless my hair is to stay in a bun. But Yesenia has not failed me, so I decided to do the treatment, a bit of a splurge, but OMG let me tell you well worth it!! Went to the salon, had the Keratin paint brushed on ever bit of hair, an art i tell you, and apparently this process/product is all the rave, don't really keep up i guess! So- I get this product paint brushed on, it sits, then every strand of hair gets artfully flat ironed in. I walk around with stylie straight hair for 3 days, a little hard to not wash, but was told by Yesenia that it was the most important thing to let it stay in. This product by the way has no chemicals, did not hurt me or smell.. Okay now to the best part, it was such a cool ordeal, but when i went back in to get it it washed out, i swear i had a new head of hair, i swear the frizz is gone, i have been able to literally wash and go, and it dries with a bit of wave, and no frizz. It's suppose to last 4 months, so we will see! Basically, I had to update and let people know of this Keratin service, and how great YESENIA is at what she does, she makes your visit fun, and more then anything keeps you coming back! I want to like this salon (I love the 4th Street location), but don't think I'm clicking with it. I want a 3.5 star rating, so I've given 4 instead. I had misgivings after the first visit related to the cut. I had to go back and have a correction made (random long piece in a shorter cut), which was disappointing in a $95 hair cut, with further corrections during a follow-up bang trim. The hairdresser did cut the best side-swept bangs I've ever had and they were very willing to correct the cut, so I decided to go back. On booking the second appointment, the salon called me with a date/time from an online appointment request I submitted from their website. We picked a day and time. Then they sent a confirmation for an entirely different day and time that the one we discussed. I had to call back to confirm the verbal appointment date/time were correct. I find their booking process bumpy. When I arrived for my second visit, the receptionist ignored me (she was on the phone), so I sat in the waiting area. The salon was rather empty, so I was surprised when the receptionist asked if I'd been helped after she hung up the phone. Ah, no. The appointment started 15 minutes late, but that's not unreasonable. I didn't quite get the haircut I was looking for, but got a nice alternative. I would recommend the salon, but be prepared to work around possible booking disconnects and need for cut adjustments. read more

The three star is "A-okay" and the 2 star is "Meh I've experience better" I feel bad giving two stars because it looks so bad but the latter quotation more accurately describes my experience here. I received a haircut from one of the in training stylists. I brought some photos of what I wanted done to my hair and the man said it was totally do-able. There were some physical differences between my hair and the ones in the photo so going in I knew it would be difficult in getting the desired outcome. The stylist did his best to get my hair to an acceptable level but towards the end, I was not happy about how the back turned out. I asked for a little bit more off and he thought that it would look too "masculine". I got him to make the change but even then he did not really do it the way I wanted. He didn't take off as much as I asked and i became frustrated that maybe i was being too picky and let it go. I got home to examine the work, and i did not think it was too "masculine" at all and wished that more would have been taken off. He was a stylist in training and I paid less than the asked price for a "master" stylist but still. In the course of talking, he said he had been cutting hair for about 10 years.... So something is a little off here. The bottom line is that it really depends on who you get. read more

I have gone to Keter twice now and am very impressed with the haircuts I received. My stylist was Tia each time and I will continue going to her exclusively from now on. I had been going to Temescal Alley (I am a guy) on and off for about a year if for no other reason then I couldn't find a reliable stylist. At T.A. you know what you will get which is nice for a haircut but I want a little more of a customized style. Tia worked with me closely each time conversing for a few minutes before she even started cutting about what worked and didn't work, what I liked about the first haircut and what I didn't like. I have very fine hair with many different cowlicks and have been told throughout my entire life that I have VERY difficult hair to cut., yet Tia conquered my hair with ease. Everytime I leave Keter salon I feel and look like a rockstar. Each time I am there I see many people leaving the salon with fabulous hairstyles no matter who has cut their hair. The online appointment scheduler is easy, convenient, and takes only a couple minutes. Each time I book an appointment online I am promptly called by the receptionist to confirm and I also receive a reminder call the day before my appointments. I've been going to Keter for 4 years. I had so many bad experience in the past from trying to save money and going else where. In addition, I have fine hair and most people want to give me tones of layers that looks like one big split end in a month. I used to have Tracy for color, who was so super good. Yesenia for hair cut. I had the best team. Tracy is no longer there and doing her own thing. Now, Yesenia does both and she is amazing, She is always educating herself and she listens to what I want. I remember a couple of years ago I was so frustrated with my hair and wanted to do something drastic. I told her, make it short, I insisted fit was what I wanted! Since, she has been working with me for years she talked me into waiting and seeing if I really want in a week and if I really want it she will do it then. I am so glad I waited! I would of made a big mistake. It's because she knows what I really want and has been working with my hair for sometime that she was able to help me reason with myself. I love Keter Salon. I go to Diana and describe what kind of haircut I'd like in terms like "playful, easy to take care of, sexy" or "professional, easy to take care of, pretty" and let her do her magic. She has given me so many different kinds of haircuts, different lengths and styles. I have loved each one and basked in the compliments. Best of all, she can create a style that really looks good with very little maintenance (I do not own a blow dryer) . She always shows me some simple styling options in the salon. Also, the haircuts grow out amazingly well...I have straight/wavy hair, but have two friends with curly curly hair that have gone to Keter regularly to get a good curly cut...The results have been gorgeous and fun. Diana is truly an artist. The salon is a training site too, so you can get a good deal, plus people are inspired and interested. It's luxurious on the one hand, as you are offered cucumber water or tea to sip as you wait on faux leopard cushions...and just really friendly and comfortable as well. I have been getting my hair cut at Keter Salon for a very long time. It is the best salon in the East Bay. The entire salon is run very professionally from the front desk to the stylists and assistants. I love going there. Just recently I saw Wayne Garsky who has been cutting my hair the entire time I have been going to Keter. I told him I wanted to make a drastic change by cutting my hair which was down to the middle of my back off to a short cut. Wayne embraced the idea of change and reviewed the photo's of possible short hair cuts I brought as ideas. He was great in pointing out what would and would not work with my hair texture and facial structure. Then he started to cut!!! And the end result--adorable! I am a new woman!! He gave me the cutest short hair cut that takes into account my hair texture and shows off my face and bone structure. Everyone that has seen me since has really loved it. A few people did not even recognize me!!! And best part of all, my husband really liked the "new do" also. Another great visit with Anita at Keter last week. This time it was me that was a bit late, but Anita was able to make it work. She has kids, and understood what I had gone through to get a babysitter and get there for the appointment, which I really appreciated. Once again, a great experience and courteous, friendly staff! My stylist was working with an assistant this time, and I was treated very well by both of them. This time I had my color done. The color, shampoo/head massage, and blow all were exquisite. Oh, and, my haircut grew out awesome by the way (from 8 weeks back). Definitely shows that this place cares about their clients. I overheard several conversations from the receptionist and stylists on how to accommodate people who were trying to squeeze in last minute and it seemed like the staff sincerely cared enough to try to fit them in even though the schedules were full. After so many experiences with annoying pretentious S.F. salons...this place is breath of fresh air. read more

*Sam is my hairstylist* I can't say enough good things about my experience at Keter Salon. The staff is very kind and the waiting room (although small-think boutique) is comfortable with decent reading material (mostly geared towards the ladies but its groovy. The entire space has a very light and airy feeling to it so you feel good about being there. They use superb product (its hard to find places that use Shu Uemura) and they KNOW how to use it (which is also hard to find). As for Sam - He is incredibly talented and has a knack for styling mens hair. I have been to numerous stylists and I can say honestly that Sam is the best. He has an unparalleled eye for detail and he wants to make sure you look fantastic before you leave the chair. He uses the shears kids, he doesn't just throw on a number 4 and go to town. He takes his time because its important to you, so its important to him. The man knows his shit. Done and Done. Do it. read more

I love this Salon!!! After my old stylist went into retirement several years ago I started on a quest to find a new one. After a couple of years of mediocre hair cuts and colors I got referred to Frankie, and let me tell you, she is great! She takes her time and is very precise and is actually willing to give me the hair cut I want and has input on how to have a stylish cut with my own little twist on it so I'm not looking like everybody else out there on the street. I spent years looking for somebody who could compare to my last stylist and found somebody even better. Score! I also have to give props to the salon. Ever ytime I show up for my appointment I always get a warm welcome and the other stylists and people working there always remember me and talk and joke around with me. And I'm always supplied with tea and water. This place is sophisticated and trendy and caters to everybody. My long search was worth the wait. Love it!!! read more

Wane is a god. I have been going to him over 10 years - I followed him from Festoon. He does color like Van Gogh - he is honest, fun, down-to-earth, stylish and uber-talented - that's why I've stuck around so long. And then he did something miraculous - he straightened and softened my beyond frizzy curly hair using the keratin process - he relieved me of a lifetime of hateration with my hair! The sky is bluer, the grass is greener and I can get up in the morning and run a brush straight through my hair!! I've been looking for a hairsylist who knew how to cut curly hair and I thank god I found her....her name is Yesenia. I went online and read so many excellent reviews on Yesenia's talent in cutting hair and her excellent, professional, positive attitude that I had to go see her. WOW!!! That's just what I can say she has done such a wonderful cut that I feel GREAT. I truly and honestly recommend Yesenia; she not only gave me an excellent cut that makes my curls look bouncy and sexy but explain step by step what she was doing to my hair and taught me how to repeat the style at home. I will definetely go to her again. Also the customer service and friendliness in this salon is wonderful. I definetely agree with all the other reviews that when you go to Keter you get treated with respect and courtesy; I had never gone to a slon that received you with an honest welcome smile and that it offer you water or tea while you wait. read more

I was recommended Keter Salon by a friend who always had gorgeous hair, and it was time I got on that bandwagon. I made an appointment - on a Sunday ! - with their color specialist, Tracy. She was really nice and cool and on time, which was great. She talked to me at length about a technique that I'd never heard of but that I learned I see in magazines and on television all the time - balayage. Tracy showed me several photos of models and stars that had it. It sounded awesome, and I really felt like she knew what she was talking about. I decided to put my hair and trust in her hands... I *so* needed a total make-over, feeling lousy about myself with my long shapeless curly dry hair. I walked into Keter and made an appointment with Anita, and then magic happened! She transformed my appearance into something amazing. My husband calls me 'cutie' now. People have commented how much they like my new do. But most of all, I now have the confidence to go out and do what I want to do and not be put off by feelings of mediocrity. I got all the attention I wanted, Anita listened to my needs in wanting to make a change, and she suggested great products for my hair. I walked into Keter Salon last week for the first time knowing that I wanted to cut off at least 7 inches of hair but not knowing anything beyond that - how short or what I wanted to look like. Luckily, I got Sam, who was a total gem and gave me a haircut I love and am wishing I had done months ago. He was super patient with my suggestions and I feel like he really heard me when I spoke of what I knew I did and didn't want. He understood when I told him I wanted something that would slim my face (I'm pregnant and insecure about my face looking wide) and the cut he gave me really answered to that. Overall he was very sweet, kind, listened great and gave me an excellent haircut. After many years of bouncing around, I may have finally found a regular hair stylist! Thanks Sam! read more

OUTSTANDING SERVICE - 5 stars just don't do it justice! Let me tell you the tale behind this: After my hairstylist of 15 years relocated, finding a new one and rebuilding trust was a challenge. Change isn't easy for me, but Sara made all the difference. She revitalized me, boosted my confidence, and now I feel like myself again. I wish I had discovered Sara earlier instead of sticking with my previous stylist. She took the time to ask me what I wanted and did not feel rushed. Embracing this change has been incredible, and it's only been 5 hours, LOL. The ambiance is also superb! Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by Andrea. Pheakdey is the best facialist I have ever been to. Her touch is beyond amazing, it is graceful and healing. I felt ALTERED in the best way possible afterwards, and glowing inside and out. What a gifted individual, this gal. I cannot explain in words how this experience changed my day. I suffer from serious back pain and after the facial it actually went away for the rest of the day. Pretty amazing, and now I have to go as often as humanly possible! The product line she used is a 100% pure organic oil line by Marie Veronique, and I am using the day oil and spf 20 at home, and every morning i think i look younger even though I'm not sleeping cause I have a newborn at home! . I was a balayage virgin...but now, I'm spoiled and won't go back to average hair color techniques again! I am so impressed by the design skill of Jordan at Keter Hair Salon. She has been able to artistically design the perfect combination of low and high lights helping to create a dynamic natural summer blond look (no paint by numbers here!). The good news is also that my darker roots are more easily disguised as the new growth is beginning to come in as well. I am recommending all my friends to Keter for the excellent cut, beautiful color and great feeling of well being they provide to their clients! I had been coming to keter for a couple of years and had haircuts from savannah - sorry she's gone. ... so i came in apprehensive about a new stylist - so much so that I freaked out on my first haircut from the new stylist - turns out that yesenia did a fantastic job on my hair -- talked to diana the owner about coming back in to take a little more off-- yesenia was great about letting me come back in to fix my hair (she'd never done my hair before so it was understandable). This salon rocks, everyone knows their stuff, great haircuts, great compliments on my hair -- thanks so much for being so close to my home and making me spiffy spiffy -- thanks so much!! I have been to Keter Salon a number of times now and i have seen Yesenia, Aviva, and Tracy! and i have never left unhappy! all of the styles and colors that i have recieved have been just divine! Also the level of customer service is amazing! the receptionist a tall blonde model looking guy was as helpful as can be even after i had to reshedule my appointment last minute! unfortunatly he is leaving! the owner Diana is a lovely woman that i have only herd great things of. Aswell for those who pocket books are straining they have a great model program, with lower prices that a friend of mine recomends! i just can't wait for my hair to grow out so i can get a fun new cut! thanks Keter! However, the service felt extremely rushed and it left me feeling uncomfortable. I had an appointment for 12:20pm, and Dayian was running late. That's totally fine. However, right when we were about to start on my hair at 12:40pm, there was a walk-in. There was no receptionist that day, and the other hairstylist, I'm assuming the one with more seniority, told the customer to come back at 1pm. Not for herself, but for Dayian. 12:40pm to 1pm, that leaves just 20 minutes to cut, wash, and dry my long hair. The other hairstylist basically tells her she should be fine because the salon is empty. This is an "appointment-only" hair salon, not a restaurant... Though Dayian was cheerful and kind, I could feel that she was visibly stressed. The whole haircut felt extremely rushed. I wanted to talk to her more but I was afraid to distract her from the haircut since there was no time. I was practically dragged back and forth from the hair washing station. She finished the haircut by 1:10pm, and was so focused about cleaning up the space for the next customer it was like she didn't even want to take my money. I like my haircut, and I think the fact that she was able to cut hair in this kind of duress attests to her craft. However, this kind of rushed service isn't really for me. I felt uncomfortable and disrespected as a customer, given that their salon policy literally says "appointment only". I respect the hustle to accept walk-in's, but I'd recommend changing the information online.

Angela was very welcoming and warm, we discussed my wants and concerns, and she let me know what would work best, then got right to work. Angela not only dyed, cut & styled my hair to my complete satisfaction, she walked me through how to truly best take care of my dyed hair. I have received multiple compliments on the color already!! The colors are vibrant and bright and exactly what I was looking for. My hair has never looked better! I highly recommend Vine Street Salon. I had shared with her that I'd been so frustrated with all the money I'm wasting going to this stylist who just didn't know how to color my roots and hair and cut it, too. I get my roots retouched every 3 weeks and the amount of money and time I invested with the previous one was so not worth it. So, I decided to go natural, but was panicked over my roots' stark demarcation. Tried Liz based on Yelp reviews and wow, was I so surprised! First, she suggested to cut my hair shorter (it was almost shoulder length and a bob before). I allowed her to go for it. I was very happy with how it turned out. I could tell that she really knew what she was doing. She didn't try to sell me a root touchup. Three weeks later, my roots were over an inch showing and I was so disgusted with my hair, so I called Liz. She took me in the following day. She could tell I was stressed about going natural, but was also very confused about how to go about it without giving up too soon. So she did a balayage which lightened my hair as it was colored dark before by my previous stylist. The tint turned out very well and I felt like I could look in the mirror again and feel that I can really commit to going gray. My time with Liz was enriching; great conversation about the trials and tribulations of women aging and being free to just be ourselves. Liz is the kind of businesswoman who is honest and not motivated by profit, but more about really improving her client's outlook about the way they look. She's fun, free-spirited, funny, and most importantly, really great at her craft. I highly recommend Tigue Salon!

Prior to coming here, I had my hair cut in Paris. This was the best haircut of my life. Long layers that eventually grew down to waist length. I described what I wanted (my hairstyle for years): cut to mid-boob length, with long layers starting from just above my chin (using my hands to gesture at height), plus thinning throughout because most hairdressers have described my hair as one of the thickest they've ever seen. What I got was a sideway somewhat uneven lob with no layers that ended at the bottom of my neck. This looks especially bad with my thick hair and on days when my hair is particularly voluminous and poofy I feel like a yeti. It will probably take another 6 months for my hair to grow back! I deserve to have my $160 compensated back to me for harm done. I'm so traumatized from this experience that I might go back to cutting my own hair as I did during COVID. When I asked why the length was so short, the hairstylist said this was better than what I wanted. Having already sat through a 1.5h haircut and knowing that long layers were not possible anymore, I didn't complain any further and just wanted to get out of there. I'll add to this that my hairstylist had some unsavory political opinions that should probably be kept private, in Berkeley of all places. I'm not coming back here.

When we arrived she offered him something to drink (just like they do when I come for my appointments) and I thought that was nice. She stopped plenty of times to ask my son how he was feeling about the way the cut was going and she asked for my input as well. Jordan ended up with a cut that still kept enough length that he was happy and the layering in the back has been perfect for me because his hair no longer turns into a matted mess each night with the accompanying brushing battle in the morning.
