I knew I found THE hair ARTIST when Diana asked me what was my relationship with my hair, and she wanted me to love my hair. I've been fighting my hair all my life, first for its toughness and later for the early greys. I decided that instead of always trying to tame it and dying it, I'm going to let it be itself and let it become my unique creative expression. Diana listened to me and she heard me! She also helped me to get emotionally ready for that bold transformation. The first step she did was to take my hair short enough to see the new shape and observe the response of my hair and myself, but not so short that there is no room for adjustment. She also asked me to email her what I did NOT like the first cut - how amazing is that! After I saw my new image, I was able to envision my ultimate image. I then found some pictures online to describe what I'd really like. Diana gave me feedback on how my hair would respond to the styles. We then came up with a plan A and a plan B. I asked Sasha to trim my long hair an inch and she took a shearing scissors to it before I could realize it, and took about 30% of my entire head of hair out after washing it with a shampoo that made the entire already fine aging hair even more fine. She very smugly asked me if I was here for a trim or a "big cut" with a smile on her face. It has been 6 months and I am still feeling like I have nothing but a top layer of hair to work with as she took the entire underside of my hair OUT. Felt like the most abusive stylist out there. I so wanted to love this salon! I first went to a Ketér when they were over on Fourth Street many moons ago. Decided to give them another try, as my colorist has recently moved out of state. It's a really nice location, the salon is bright, and the music is fun. Everybody was friendly, and I enjoyed watching the owner cut her client's hair and chatting together while I received my balayage from Jordan. Jordan is sweet, but seems really overbooked - as a result, her vibe feels too distracted to make a real connection. When we began discussing my hair and what I was after, she frequently responded with "cool" - which, ok, cool - but maybe a little general (my opinion) for such a pricey service. I don't need to be pandered to, but I do want to feel like a stylist is dialed in to our time together. I was looking forward to spending the duration of my the service with her, because I thought we might become more familiar. But once she'd balayaged my hair, she turned me over to a junior stylist who washed, conditioned and blow-dried my hair. As she was already onto another client, Jordan never again glanced my way - not even to admire her own handiwork. She didn't thank me for coming in. Didn't say "it was nice to meet you." It was just - over. I went to the register to pay and left a 20% tip, but I never had that sparkly 'wow, I just found my new stylist and I'm super psyched with how I look' feeling we all know and love... So in the end, nothing terrible happened. I just feel that this particular model of service - i.e., senior stylist does the main service, and then you're turned over to a junior stylist - feels disjointed and like they're trying to get folks in and out as quickly as they can. Maybe that's the way they've discovered works best for them, but the meta-message (again, in my opinion) is that you're a customer, rather than a cared-for client. Incidentally, I know what it's like to work in the service industry, and I always try to be kind and courteous when I'm receiving a beauty or 'self-care' service from another human being. In this case, what I felt leaving the salon was underwhelmed. As for the results, my hair looked fine but it's now been a few months and it hasn't lasted as long as balayage I've had in the past (I typically go three times per year). I'm sure Jordan is probably a great fit for some, but for me, it wasn't a love match. I hope this review was fair and helpful. read more

Jordan has been doing my hair color for over 3 years. She has always been sweet and extremely professional with me. I have platinum blonde hair so it's bleach and toner and she always tell me to come between root touch ups for toner if I need to. I never need to but Iove the offer. I return to this salon because Jordan and the staff are so friendly and inviting. I hate snotty salon atmospheres and this is definitely not one of them. Left the salon with super dry hair. I don't know how but I never experienced something like this and I'm upset. My hair is also super tangle at the ends now, which it's usually not and especially not after a normal haircut. The person cutting my hair also rarely checked if I was okay with the length and if I wanted more cut during the process and only asked once after it was done, but they styled so I couldn't really tell and felt like it was too late to ask for more to be cut. My hair wasn't cut the the length I wanted it to be and was left with drier and tanglier hair than usual that has barely been cut. I decided to try a new salon since I moved to a new city and am left feeling like I wasted my money. read more

Nick was wonderful. I do not know the proper terms of styles and cuts, and I generally have a hard time describing what kind of cut I want. Nick was able to translate everything I said into the perfect cut. There was no doubt the cut wouldn't be great, but I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how my hair turned out. I also came in as a first time client with feeling very defeated from my day at work, and it seemed that Nick did not mind me being silent for most of the appointment -- which I very much appreciated. I was in and out quickly, about 45 mins total. I walked out of the salon feeling de-stressed with a beautiful and natural looking cut. When I got home, my boyfriend raved about how amazing it looked. I debated writing this review because I understand that everyone is human and that it's hard to go from black to blonde in one session. However, as a college student who makes minimum wage and decided to save up for a near ~$200 balayage, this was definitely not what I was expecting. The first image is the image I showed Myra (not sure if that's how to spell her name), who said it was probably achievable as I had virgin hair. I voiced my concerns about dyeing my hair since I never had before, and she said I would be fine. I didn't really feel that she cared about how it turned out, and I also felt like she was rushing to finish since I had booked an appointment later in the day and the salon was closing towards the end of my appointment. When she was done, I was embarrassed to go to school or work because my hair was essentially orange and the dye was dispersed unevenly. There was a big chunk of hair where the color broke from a lighter color into a darker color suddenly without any blending/transition. I was asked to come back a few days later because the stylist wanted to correct something, and I asked her if she could just dye all of it light brown instead of blonde, thinking this would fix the brassiness. Sadly, it didn't. She did give me a free keratin vitamin shot treatment, which I appreciated, but I liked my natural hair more than this. This is not what I asked for, and I wish that if the stylist didn't think she could do what I wanted she would've said that straight up. I will not be coming back here, and unfortunately I'm going to have to spend another $200 to fix this elsewhere. I'm sure others had good experiences with some of the color specialists at this salon, and everyone was very friendly, but ultimately I didn't receive what I asked for and ended up with brittle, orange hair. read more

I came in to get my first haircut in over a year. I had sooooo much length to cut and was looking to take off about 6 inches and get some layers. I had my cut done by Tony and I'm super happy with the results! I brought him a photo reference and briefly talked him through what I was looking for, and he immediately knew what to do and the execution was perfect. He got the length just right and the layers add a nice amount of movement and dimension. He's been with Keter for 9 years and is a total pro - works efficiently, very friendly and easy-going, and just overall knows how to cut hair very well. The salon itself was very clean, well organized, and the staff is very friendly. I would definitely go again and have another haircut by Tony. I have already recommended this salon to a friend. The stylists at Keter know their sh*t! I went to Keter in April 2023 for a haircut by Kiki, and returned a couple months later for a color by Nelly. As a self-described "cheap" person, I thought the haircut was more expensive than I would've expected, but the color was right about what I thought it would be. Was it over-priced? Well, you get what you pay for. I had my waist-long hair cut down to a short bob. I have straight Asian hair, except for this part of my hair that gets wavy when it's short. I've always had trouble curling it in the way I like whenever I get my hair cut. After the cut by Kiki, it isn't an issue anymore! As long as I curl it in once after my shower and it fully dries, it stays exactly as I like. No more having to repeatedly curl it in during the air drying process. As for the color, Nelly is AWESOME!! She delivered on my ombre fire/autumn hair, making me look like a photoshopped Google image search. Before starting, we went over what we had discussed at our prior consultation, making sure we were both on the same page about expectations. Throughout my 7.5-hr appointment, she was patient and thorough. My appointment ran longer than expected and even though there was another customer waiting, Nelly didn't cut corners and I personally didn't feel rushed. Nelly far exceeded my expectations and made a longer-than-expected hair appointment pleasant and enjoyable. I also didn't feel like she upsold me. I bought color shampoo and conditioner, and was wondering if I should get a leave-in conditioner, too, but Nelly said it wasn't necessary. If it's in your budget, I highly recommend Keter for all your hair salon needs. A friend of mine recommended I go see Kiki for a haircut about a year ago. I had been doing very little maintenance with my hair since the pandemic. Kiki is probably the first the first person I have gone to that actually listened to what I wanted and needed. I've gotten my hair cut here twice, and Mayra is the best! She really listens to me about my hair and adjusts the cut accordingly. For example, my hair grows straighter on one side and curlier on the other, but most stylists I've ever visited don't believe me and cut my hair "evenly," which leaves me looking lopsided. Mayra listened to me and trusted that I know my own hair, and I ended up with a beautiful cut that emphasizes my natural curl and looks even on both sides! Probably the best haircut I've ever had! On my most recent visit, I decided to go crazy with color, and Mayra was more than up to the challenge! She used four different color dyes to give my color depth and dimension, really emphasizing the curls even more. I'm moving in two months and won't be able to work with Mayra again, but I'll be sure to stop in for a trim and color touch-up before I go. I feel bad leaving this review, but I feel like if it could help someone that would be good. I posted some pics, but keep in mind that A. The inside of it is still moist and weighed down from my shower this morning, so the weirdness isn't at it's most pronounced, and B. from selfie distance the issues are a little obscured. I got a lot of hair. Thesis: Don't go here if you have thick, curly hair. They don't know what to do with it. I say that having seen multiple stylists here. None have given me an expert cut, this recent one is hands down one of the worst cuts I have had, anywhere. There are random chunks in it that make no sense. The details: I have thick, curly hair. I went in to get my hair cut by a senior stylist five days ago. It was about $125. I had a good sense of what I wanted -- a cut I have had a handful of times before. I think I communicated it well. After a very quick haircut, the stylist indicated she was just about done. She asked me if it had all of the layering I wanted. Dear reader, it had none of the layering I wanted. I just asked for the shape I wanted again. You know, missing instructions happens to the best of us. Maybe she was distracted by my gorgeous head of hair when I was initially talking to her. Who knows. But then she told me point blank that what I was asking for is "hard" in curly hair. That was frustrating. I would have liked to have heard her limitations at the start of the haircut rather than at what she seemed to think was the end. It was also frustrating because I have had that exact cut multiple times by three different stylists in SF, all around this price point. But this isn't SF and maybe that's the point. What I wanted was basically overdirected, long layers that are shortest in the back and get longer around the sides until the front most points where all the hair is the same length, with a few face framing pieces. It's really pretty. The curls cascade. I look like a girl in one of those fairy by the pond paintings. She got back in there and sliced through some more hair, but she didn't end up going the fairy route. What I have is kind of just an extremely long shag. There's no discernable shape to my hair. It hangs like a curtain. But that's not all: Dear reader, my hair is lopsided. There is one big chunk on the left side that is several inches shorter than anything on the right, or surrounding it. There is another big short chunk on the right at the very front. It looks insane. I wonder if this stylist thought, as some stylists do, that in curly hair it all sort of blends in. I wish it did. It's fine, it's not a big deal. If I use a little product and loose bobby pins I can hide my new chunks. But I absolutely regret going here for my cut. Every time these random chunks wave their hearty hellos in the mirror, I'm like "Right. You." So listen, if you have "textured" hair, just go to a salon that specializes in curly hair. If you don't mind crossing the bridge, I have had positive experiences at Cinta, Edo and Madusalon. But in Berkeley (where I always am now, due to quarantine) I have yet to find a good shop. I am so incredibly happy with my cut and color from Kiki! She had her work cut out for her with my pandemic haircut I gave myself (I was lopsided people, it was real bad). I booked an appointment (this is my first time at the salon) and called in 24 hours within the appointment to check if I could do perms with my appointment since perms were not listed in the booking system so I wasn't sure. Whoever picked up the call had such bad attitude: first they said could not cancel it the day before without charging half the haircut ($96, but I also have a short bob and would've asked for a slight trim so not sure about the pricing either) which would be around $50. I stated that this was my first time there; that policy was not clearly written anywhere when I made the booking; I could not call in the day before either because the shop was closed; and that as a student I really can't afford to pay $50 without accessing any services. They said they would have to check back with the owner on whether they would have to charge me. But when I tried to work out other options like rescheduling my appointment or if I should come in either way in case they cannot get back to me on time, they repeatedly stated that "I'm too busy" and there are "too many people on the line" that they needed to tend to. They said they would cancel my appointment either way, which I thought was a rather unfriendly and disrespectful way to resolve the situation. They must have been having a really awful morning, but I'm unfortunately never going to book another appointment at this place. read more

I'm sad to say my hair did not come out as expected. I came in to get a color correction with Jordan. I'd had "foilyage" at another salon that was basically highlights right up to the root, even though I'd said I wanted it dark at top gently transitioning to light. I showed Jordan a photo (posted here). I wanted an enhanced version of my neutral/dark blonde color on top, with cool, delicate balayage highlights starting about a third of the way down transitioning to light at the ends with some contrast. Instead I got a reddish dark hue at top, with golden balayage coming up to the root in many places, and wide bands of super-light hair around my face, washing me out more than the original highlight had. I paid over $300 including tip. Granted, my hair had already been processed at another salon, so perhaps the color results were unpredictable. I am now going to yet another salon to at least put a cool semi-permanent color over the top while I grow it all out. :-( read more

A Salon for the People. After writing my last review the owner of Keter offered to have my hair fixed at no additional cost. I was not sure if I was willing to sit another 2-3 hours to get my hair color adjusted, but I simply felt like my last hair coloration did not match my personality; it even made me feel uncomfortable. I scheduled my appointment with Sasha, the manager at the upstairs salon. Sasha has done an adjustment for me before, and she is absolutely fabulous. She has an intuitive skill for understanding people's needs. After this second session with her, I am convinced Sasha can do no wrong. I explained to her that I wanted my color darkened at the top and then softened as it lightened at the bottom. I did not ask for nor did I want the highlights/face framing color that was done on top of my head in the previous hair sessions with JoAnna. It should be noted that JoAnna did an excellent job in the balayage process. It's obvious that she is a talented hair stylist, but we had a huge misunderstanding in the communication process. To fix my hair, Sasha dyed the top portion my original color. Then, feathered and toned the color the dark color into my bleached hair. She also noticed that my hair was drying out because of the bleach, so she gave me a complimentary Kerastase hair mask. The result was pure perfection! It was exactly what I wanted when I came to the salon - a bold yet sophisticated change. My experience with Keter has definitely depended on the stylist, and if you schedule an appointment with Sasha, you won't be disappointed. She definitely tamed that tiger. Keter is the best salon in Berkeley and probably all of the Bay Area. I see Mayra to get my hair bleached and toned but I've seen nearly every stylist with amazing results. They use kerastase and olaplex so you know it's top tier. If you want to get your hair done and actually get exactly what you want this is the spot, plus it's in a cute area with a bunch of things to do so it's a nice place to hang out before or after your appointment. 10 out of 10 will keep going here forever. Went to the wrong location and had a rough start, but once I got in I was greeted with warm smiles and positive energy! Salon was very modern and clean! Very open space which made the place look bigger than it actually is. Amy did my color and was flawless! I previously had highlights done at a different salon and while I liked the color, it was getting a bit dull and I wanted more of balayage, blended look. Setting up the appointment was a breeze; I called the number and I was instantly matched with a time slot that worked perfectly! A few days before my hair appointment, I received a text message reminder which was definitely helpful and necessary for a busybody like me. As soon as I arrived at the salon, I could not help but notice how clean and modern it looked. The reception was polite and greeted me right away, offering me water and tea. She was also efficient, leading me to my stylist, Stephanie right away. I was also given a robe, which gave such a cute and comforting touch to the experience. Stephanie was an absolute wonder to work with. She understands that customer satisfaction is vital, so she listened to my needs first. At the same time, she also shared her honest professional opinion and even offered some advice. It turns out what I thought I wanted was more of an ombré, balayage but she suggested more lowlights to offer dimension and depth. She made sure we were on the same page, showing me dozens of example pictures- something that is rare in the hair world these days! Stephanie also took her time darkening my roots and periodically asking me if the shade/tone was to my liking. I ultimately ended up with darker roots, and more of a smoother transition to a well-toned honey blonde on the tops. Stephanie was transparent, telling me the products used- three different gloss colors by L'Oréal Pro to offer more texture and customization. She later promoted some of their products to keep my hair looking shiny and healthy. I will be sure to check them out next time! Overall, Stephanie and Keter Salon provided me with the experience that I've always wanted but never received from a salon. It all came down to a decent price as well- around $90 before the tip. Now this is a pride that is almost unheard of for me in the Bay Area. This just further proves that Keter does not sacrifice quality for price or comfort!
