It started with my hare-brained idea to rinse my fine, curly hair with apple cider vinegar. Well, I have since learned that curly-headed gals have no business drying out their hair with ACV. Plus, it stinks. Anyway, since I'd dried out and damaged my hair with this little holistic home science experiment, I thought I should trim off the ends. So I Yelped and came up with Lan Salon. BAD, BAD, BAD. I showed a photo of my desired cut to Kim, and asked her to trim it a bit, but she completely HACKED OFF ALL THE HAIR ON THE BACK SIDE OF MY HEAD! I am a professional middle-aged woman with a career and it doesn't exactly behoove me to look like one of those kids begging on Telegraph Avenue. But there it is. read more

I've been going to Lan's for years to get haircuts, manicures, and pedicures. Lan and Quyen are both amazing hairdressers (and amazing people)! Lan's taken me from black to platinum blonde, and Quyen's styled my hair so many different ways, from cute layered cuts to an edgy sideshave look. I've gone to many hair salons in SF and Oakland at all different price ranges, and literally will always choose Lan. The quality and cost there is unmatched imo. Recently, I got my brows tinted and an eyelash lift there by Nu, and I'm super happy with the results. My eyelashes are short and really straight, and it's really hard for them to stay curled. I was really surprised at the lift she was able to get! Lan tinted my brows, and they look really natural, which is really awesome as someone who doesn't like to wear that much makeup and is getting tired of doing my brows everyday. Anyway, I love this salon and also have noticed that their business has been growing over the years. A part of me doesn't want to write this review for selfish reasons, but they deserve all the praise they can get!! read more

As I sit on my bed, eating my chocolate ice cream, I think back to two hours ago when I was sitting in one of the few black waiting chairs at Lan Beauty Salon. I drove up to the salon and found parking across the street in a "pay to park" spot. ($.25 for 10 minutes). I went into the salon, which looked mediocre from the outside but pretty stylish inside. To tell the truth, I was extremely nervous. I've had my share of botched hair cuts - all which make me cringe to think about. Anyways, my heart was pounding and I could feel my face getting hot; I was tempted to run out of the shop and never look back...BUT I knew I couldn't because my hair was in dire need of a date with some silver scissors. I waited for a good 30 minutes (there were 2 guys getting haircuts and 2 women ahead of me in line) before I was called up. My knees wobbled as I walked to the hair-cutting chair and stepped over the balls of hair on the floor left from the previous client. I took a deep breath and so it began. I told LAN (the woman doing my hair) a general idea of what I wanted. She was so friendly and nice and we had a good conversation. I was still slightly nervous, even though I should have been put at ease by Lan's demeanor. 20 minutes later, I stood up and shook my head around and fondled my hair - it was perfect: it had flow and it didn't look like a curtain of black hair, but a cascade of black water (excuse my tackiness). Lan did everything I asked and even cut it to the exact length I asked for. My total came out to be $20 + $5 tip and it was well worth it. I will be visiting Lan Beauty Salon again. **for the record, I have really long, straight hair. It was about 13 inches past my shoulders and about 11.5 inches after my cut. ALSO, they do everything from cuts to color, perms, eyelash tinting/perm, waxing, facials and nail care. read more

The ladies are nice here, that I won't complain about. But after further inspection of my nails when I got home, I was not impressed. Each nail was a different shape, not very happy with my acrylics. From afar they look good most likely due to my neutral nail color. But I'm a bit of a perfectionist and these nails don't cut it. They aren't terrible but they aren't perfect either. I will have to have the redone when I get a chance. And for the price I paid I'm not to thrilled about that. Three stars for cleanliness and they took me right away. Wish the stars were 5 with some pretty nails to show off. read more

This is now my go-to hair salon. I've gotten my hair cut by Gina a few times and she always does an amazing job! They don't wash your hair before cuts (is this a California thing?), but that's okay with me. It's hard to find a place that can cut Asian hair without making you look ridiculous, but Gina does a great job. She's fast and I pay $30 (before tip) for my medium length hair. I've also gotten a gel manicure here and the woman did a beautiful job! The color selection is a little small, but the work she does is superb. The owner sometimes brings her two small dogs in here and they're pretty cute. I've been able to pet one, but the other is a little more hesitant to be pet. I will win them both over one day! read more

After reading a very recent review on Lan's Beauty Salon, I decided I'd come here over Lhasa's. I looked into both and read through the reviews, they both seemed pretty good... I wish I looked into it a bit more now. I brought some pictures of the hairstyle I wanted, but Gina showed me other pictures from books she had. I don't think she was clear on what I wanted, and she ended up giving me a lot of layers for a short cut. In the pictures I showed her, the hair wasn't really layered much, more of a straight cut. Also, I didn't expect the cut to be $25. I thought it was going to be $20. I wish she had told me earlier that it would be five dollars more for BLOW DRYING and styling. She didn't wash my hair or anything. I was a bit unhappy about that part, especially given that I wasn't exactly happy about my haircut (it didn't really look like the picture I had shown her). Sometimes my hair looks okay, but I was really expecting more from here. My bangs are not the length I had asked for. And you know that bangs take a while to grow out... so I have to pin them up sometimes. Aside from the haircut, Gina is nice and the place is pretty big. They do nails and waxing too so maybe they're better in that area? I wish I had gone to Lhasa's because I saw that they solely focused on haircuts after passing by it. read more

I finally got my eyebrows waxed after weeks! Even though it was my first time coming here, the lady that did my brows was friendly and always smiling, we chatted as if we knew each other already. I told her that I wanted my brows shape like hers but a bit a bit thicker, and they came out just the way I wanted them! I'm definitely coming back again after my finals are done which is next week! Gina is the go-to person when it comes to haircut. She takes her time cutting hair and she makes sure youre happy when you step out of the door . So glad I finally found a reliable, friendly and inexpensive barber in Berkeley. LAN is by far the best of the other shops in the downtown area (for guys, at least). Bonus points for minimal wait times in the evening. Hm now that I think about it I may have already written a review about this place oh well it deserves two reviews anyways. read more

Had a good time here. Got a pedicure and my sister had a mani pedi. The ladies were nice and did a thorough job even though we came in kind of close to closing. They made sure to check that the colors we chose were the ones we wanted and made conversation I would come here again ^_^ read more

Hidden gem, they mostly do nails and it's a little daunting for a guy to walk in there and get a haircut but have recently been getting mine there. Definitely know what they are doing! Bonus it's half the price of levels and 100% less pretentious. read more

Well I had an important job interview to go to so I decided to get a haircut to look presentable. I had been at this salon before and Lan cut my hair. My first experience was OK, nothing fancy, but not too horrible either. I am not picky and when I get a haircut that looks decent I consider this to be a satisfactorily experience. When I give a business one start it is because the experience was pretty awful. So I walk -in, (walk-ins are welcome) and ask if I can get a haircut. They say Lan will be available in about 15 minutes. I ask do I need an appointment they say no, just wait. So I wait. For half an hour. But that's not all. Another person comes in and they tell her to wait too. We wait. Another person comes in and they tell him to wait too. The lady who came in after me says that she wants a hair coloring (more expensive than a haircut) and Lan takes HER first. I am a little annoyed, but I do need that haircut for the interview the next day. So I keep waiting. Lan tells the guy she will take him next. What? I was there first; I let the lady with the coloring cut in, now the guy too? Lan says: "Well, he had an appointment..." Didn't I ask to get an appointment? They told me I didn't need one. The guy gets tired of waiting and leaves. I give myself mental props for being tough and resilient, not like the guy. I think, " See, I out-waited you guy with an appointment" Hair coloring takes forever! " Gee, the guy was smart to leave." It is getting dark. It feels like I have been there the whole afternoon. I contemplate giving up on the haircut. Lan waives at me and says "You can sit and I cut your hair while the color on the other person is setting." " Nice!" " I think, so practically she takes me to fill in the time. I show her a picture of what I want. She disregards it and says it's not going to work. She will cut my hair the way she wants to. She has barely finished the back of the hair when the lady with the hair color comes in and says she is late and needs to get the coloring finished fast. I can see Lan is about to dump me again and jump to finish her. I finally speak: "No. I am late too! I am not going to wait another minute; you have to finish my haircut. " Lan sees that I mean business. She tells the other lady that she will be with her in a minute. I think it is a figure of speech... It is not. What happens next reminds me of Benihana - bits of hair fly up in the air, sharp objects swish around my ears with blazing speed, chop, chop, chop, cut, cut, cut, a-and Done! She does some trick with the little mirror, I don't see anything in the back, but the front looks pretty awful. Some kind of a furry animal is sitting on top of my head, a blob with no shape; it is shot and puffy, just bad. I look like a homeless lady. No offense to anyone. Lan pushes me toward the cashier's desk, quickly before I spend too much time in front of the mirror. I think she senses that no tip is coming her way. She whispers something to the cashier. They charge me MORE than the listed price. All in all a pretty awful experience. Oh and that job interview...You guessed it I didn't get the job. I looked pitiful; no amount of product could tame the mess. The hair will grow back eventually, but I am still suffering from a post haircut syndrome. read more

I LOVE this place!! It is the only place I go for a quality and affordable haircut. Kim and Lan (yes, how narcisstic of me to get my hair cut here!) have been cutting my hair for the past three years. At the advice of Kim, I chopped off 6 inches of hair last November. Despite my extreme hesitation, she reassured me that the cut would look good because of my face shape. Needless to say, I put my full trust in her hands and walked out a very satisfied lady! These ladies are the only ones that I trust to maintain my short 'do... even if it is just cutting an inch or two off. I'm a big big big fan of their other services.. I've been getting my hair dyed and my eyebrows waxed for the past several years. The ladies here are all very attentive and very outgoing. Even though I now live in the City, I gladly make the trek out to Berkeley every 2 or 3 months to get my hair cut at Lan's read more

Oh god. I was lured in by the price of $5 for bangs, and I came out wanting to cry. ($5 for them to create bangs, not a bang trim, since I dind't have bangs to begin with) The lady who cut my hair only said two things to me throughout the quick session: "I know, I know" and "very cute! very cute!" I asked for my hangs to by trimmed, she rushed me into the seat, and cut away, without even asking how I wanted them cut. It was my fault for not jumping up, clutching the remaining hairs on my head, and running far, far away from her. I just kept sitting there, in the blind hope that she actually knew what she was doing as she kept reassuring me "very cute! very cute!" Even with the rest of my hair as reference, I dont think she picked up on the fact that my hair has a lot of volume. The length that she cut my bangs to, when they were drenched by her spray bottle quickly bounced back up when dry.... to some awkward length around the midway point between by eyebrows and my hairline, when I had originally wanted eyebrow-length bangs. The ladies at Maxi haircare on Telegraph have always been wonderful to me. Once, I wandered in there, thinking about whether I should get a haircut, and the older asian lady gave me a full consultation, based on my hair type/look I was going for. She ended up advising me against the look I wanted, saying she didn't want to do that to me, when she easily could have easily gotten some extra business from me. *That* is customer service - when the stylist actually communicates with you about what you want. I'm pretty easy to please/usually only come on yelp to rave about places that I really like/love, since I hate saying bad things about anything... but this place - Lan Beauty Salon - is the exception. read more

Loved my haircut. I had one of those days where I as just sick of my hair, it felt flat on my head, it was too long, got stuck in my backpack, meh. So, i decided to yelp a place really quick to get my hair did. My first impression of the place is, its spacial and comfortable. The beauty salon actually does nails, coloring, pedi, and hair! (so versatile!) I had Lan, she asked me what I wanted, I gave her a picture but pretty much I told her everything I didn't want. Lan immediately understood exactly what was wrong with my hair (current-state) and grabbed her razor and got right to it. What is LOVE, is that she used a razor. Honestly, if you want lots of layers and you want it to blend well, make sure your hair stylist can use a razor. Lan took her time, made sure everything was aligned. For men: this is the place for you! They are quick and they know what they are doing. The whole time I was there, the majority of the customers were men coming in for their monthly trim. read more

Lhasa across the street had a wait. I feel like these two salons are in some sort of epic rivalry because they are across the street with the same service and almost-same prices. Honesty looking at the sign LAN made me think of a LAN party. I sat down with Lan of Lan Beauty Salon, and hoped for the best. I don't get a buzzer cut like most Asian male customers here. Actually, there were 2 other said-Asian-male customers getting a buzzer cut. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Since they were done within 10 minutes of starting, I didn't have to wait long. I told Lan that I wanted a scissor-only cut. She told me it'd be no problem. Pretty soon I was confident that she knew what she was doing because she started trimming around with regular shears to shape my hair and paying careful attention to detail about how much she cut. She told me that she'd come back to make it shorter when layering it. She was right - she finished up my haircut about 20 minutes later when she mostly used the thinning shears to give my hair a nice texture. I'm pretty satisfied with the $15 haircut. I'd go again for my scissor cut for sure. Beats waiting at Berkeley Hair Studio for a rushed haircut. read more

Upside: You can't beat a mani/pedi for $29. bucks! They'll get you in and out on your lunch hour and it looks great. One star. Downside: The place is flithy and really makes one wonder if they don't keep their salon clean, do they even clean their tools. Minus two stars. And never, I repeat never, let anyone who works there come at you with a pair of scissors or hot wax. I learned the hard way on both counts. Minus another two stars. I wouldn't be surprised if most of these ladies aren't licensed. read more

I had some great cuts and some so-so cuts, but never the right combo of close enough, a decent amount of availability that I'm not waiting months or driving across the bay, AND a great cut.) I tried Mark at Maru on a random rec from a friend whose daughter works at the salon--and after one cut, I feel like my search is over! The salon is very well-run and had an opening within a couple weeks. I arrived on time, was offered herbal tea, and waited under five minutes. It's in a nice spot in Berkeley with plenty of street parking with pretty cheap meters--$4. Mark asked me what I was looking for, got it right away, and was of course fun to chat with. I walked out with a cut I love for a reasonable price. I will definitely be back!

We were having an 87-degree day in West Berkeley, which -- for those unfamiliar -- is hot for West Berkeley, a neighborhood where the default setting is breezy and cloudy and lovely and sixty-three degrees, the kind of microclimate that lets you own one jacket and never think about it. Eighty-seven degrees in West Berkeley is an event. Eighty-seven degrees with hair that's two weeks past due is a crisis. I have Asian hair. I've written about this before. It is coarse and thick and grows outward like a porcupine asserting its personal space, and my coping mechanism in Los Angeles was to throw $85 at a hipster barbershop every three weeks to make it stop. This worked in the way that all expensive coping mechanisms work -- reliably, but at a cost that quietly compounds until one day you do the annual math and feel ill. 2026 being what it is, and a dollar these days being asked to do about a dollar forty's worth of work, I needed a new tack. I asked an AI assistant for a good cheap haircut in Berkeley and got several suggestions, which I then searched on Yelp -- yes, the very Yelp you are looking at, imagine that -- for reviews. One thing I noticed about La Petite was that people mentioned Asian women cutting hair there, and the photos confirmed it. I had a thought, the kind of thought that sounds reductive when you say it out loud but is grounded in lived experience: Asian women probably know how to deal with hair like mine. This is not a stereotype. This is pattern recognition developed over decades of watching non-Asian barbers stare at my head with the quiet bewilderment of someone asked to solve a math problem in a language they don't speak. No shade intended, just facts. So I gave La Petite a go. You watch closely when someone new is cutting your hair. You can't help it. You're tracking every snip in the mirror, reading their hands the way you'd read a stranger's driving in the first five minutes of a road trip -- are we safe here, does this person know what they're doing, should I have said something three turns ago. About halfway through, I watched her take volume out of my hair in a way that hadn't been done in years -- not just trimming the length but actually understanding the architecture of thick Asian hair, where the bulk lives, how it falls, how it will eventually grow out, where it needs to be thinned so it lies flat instead of projecting horizontally from your skull like it's staging a protest. She knew. I knew she knew. I had my new stylist. Twenty-eight dollars. Twenty-eight dollars, and I walked out with the best haircut I've had in longer than I'd like to admit. That's $57 left over from what I was paying in LA -- enough to buy groceries, or three martinis at happy hour, or a pizza at June's, or whatever you buy when you realize you've been dramatically overpaying for a basic human service because you confused a cool neighborhood and exposed brick with competence. La Petite has neither exposed brick nor a cocktail menu. She cut it too high, which ruined the whole haircut, especially since my face shape doesn't suit short sideburns. I told her I didn't like it. I didn't overreact or yell, I was just uncomfortable. The hairdresser said, "Too bad!" and tried to dismiss the issue. I told her again that she should have asked me about the length. She then took it personally and told her boss that I was making things up so I wouldn't pay, saying, "They do this so they don't pay." What do you mean by "they"? Not only did I feel dismissed and treated unprofessionally, but also disrespected. I was upset after the whole situation, but even then I was willing to pay and didn't want to leave without paying because I didn't want to prove her point. Plus, it's not that expensive. At the end, the stylist said she had 40 years of experience. Well, after this, it feels like you wasted 40 years and somehow skipped the basics of customer service. Not coming back, even after being offered a free haircut. I would rather pay three times what I paid today for a standard service where you're treated with basic courtesy.

My daughter ended up seeing Cristi, and she had such a great experience. She was at the salon for about six hours, and I was worried it was going to be too long, but she had a blast. She watched shows and played games on her iPad, she was offered snacks, and even took a nap as she got her hair washed. Before she knew it, we had returned to pick her up and it was time for the big reveal. They hadn't let her see it until we arrived and she is in love with it. It turned out beautiful, and seeing how happy she was meant everything to me. When I was 16, I used box dye from the store or "Sun in" so being able to give her this experience was really special for me. It also gave me peace of mind knowing she was in such good hands and that her hair was being cared for properly, esp without me being there. Of course, Fox & Belle did an amazing job! I used to live in New York, but moved to Berkeley. i was looking for a place to get my hair cut, but i didn't know a place that would cut the way i like it because as you can see, i am new to the place. So i roam around Berkeley and i run into this salon called "Lan Beauty Salon" and saw that they had a pretty decent price range for haircuts, so i decided to try this new place out. As i walk in, i like how all the ladies greeted me with a warm welcoming. They make me feel comfortable to be around and i like that. A short haired lady named Gina was the lady that cut my hair and surprisingly, i liked it more than i thought i would. i wanted very layered trim, and she gave me exactly what i wanted. She made sure i was okay with what length she was going to cut it before actually cutting it. I also liked the way she kept complimenting my hair as she cut it. it made me feel more at ease and less nervous about the haircut because i was really scared to cut it at such a short length. so i was looking around yelp and came across Lan beauty Salon.i saw many great reviews and thought it would be a neat place to go to. i've always been paranoid about people cutting my hair, but i finally found the confidence to go to the salon. When i arrived at the salon, a lady with really short hair named Gina made me feel comfortable by giving me a warm greeting and giving me cookies to eat. i could tell she noticed that was a little scared to get my haircut, but her encouragement made me want to do it. i just asked for really short layers and Gina knew what to do. My friend recommended me to this salon and I went to Gina to get a haircut and she is fabolous! Before cutting your hair, she will ask you what kind of style you're going for. I asked her for layered hair with bangs on the side. This was my first visit at this salon and I already loved the way she cut and style my hair. I finally found a stylist i will stick with for a long time. Not only she's the best, but she is also very friendly and keeps a customer entertained by her good conversations. First off, this review goes to Gina! My outcome for my hair went really well. Gina usually knows what hair style fits your head shape and what doesn't. I wanted a Bob, and for someone who has had long for a long time, getting a style that short was a little nerve wrecking.Gina said that a Bob suits my head shape. Last week I saw a woman with a beautiful short haircut when I was having lunch in San Francisco. I had to ask her where and who cut her hair as I was hating my haircut which was overgrown and shapeless. She told me Gina at Lan's Salon in Berkeley. Today, I called and luckily there was an available appointment with Gina! Yippeee! Meeting Gina was a pleasure...a jovial and experienced stylist who knew exactly what to do. The other day, i walked into this salon and came out with a great result! It was wonderful. My hair was long and sort of dull, but Gina helped me style it up! I wanted to change my hair style and Gina was the one to go to. She layered my hair in a way that would suite my face shape, so she knew what she was doing. i loved my layers. I started coming to Lan Beauty Salon about 2 years ago after recommendation from a friend. I come for a haircut and dye my hair every month and a half when my white hair starts to show. Lan has always taken great care of me and I always leave looking good. She's really attentive and takes her time....I really like that. I see the other lady at her shop (Gina?) does miracles with hair. Lan has been cutting my hair for seven (or more, I forget) years now. Every time I stray and have someone else cut my hair I regret it! In fact, Lan does such a good job on my hair that I don't mind driving form Santa Cruz for a cut (and a mini-vacation, too!) I understand if I was being aggressive but the whole time, I was being very nice. She starts taking the color off and her drill kept going on my skin and my body jumped from being startled and she said "honey I'm not cutting your skin, I'm just taking the color off". My eyes were getting teary at this point. I told her no color and left paying $20 less than what was the original price for what I asked for. She said it would be $60, I gave her a $10 tip and it seemed she herself was surprised I tipped because she came after me and said I paid $70, I told her keep it, your tip. Left crying on Christmas Eve. If a customer asks if you know how to do it and you don't, just please say no and show some designs you're capable of doing.
