I asked for a blowout and the guy originally doing my hair had no idea what he was doing. A woman ended up just curling my hair instead. I'm disappointed because it's not want I wanted and it was $95. The curled hair was okay, I'm glad the woman tried to fixed it but it wasn't the best. I won't be coming back. read more

I found Ary a couple of years ago when looking for a new place to get a cut. She was the first person who seemed to know how to style my hair based on its texture (I'm an Asian guy with straight, thick hair). She was patient and kind as I listed what has worked well/poorly in the past, and was able to explain really well what she planning on doing/what she thought was best. Cut to a couple years later, and I haven't gotten a haircut from anyone else since! I came in after making an appointment the day before to see Johnny. As a student in the bay, finding a salon to get a haircut that's not over $100 and it trustworthy is surprisingly very difficult. I have super heavy, thick mixed hair and needed a trim since my ends were uneven. I'm am super careful about who touches my hair and was a bit hesitant trying out a new salon. I was seated within 10 minutes and Johnny was very courteous, making sure he understood exactly what I wanted. I asked for 2 inches off and some layering in the back. After about 25 minutes we finished up and my hair felt and looked so much better! He nailed it! The total was $30 after applying a 50% off discount for Cal students. I never write Yelp reviews but this place DESERVED it. I came in twice this week, once to thin & cut curtain bangs/face framing layers and two days later to balayage my hair. Ary styled me both days, and she was constantly checking in for what I wanted. She is truly skilled at what she does! The pictures speak for themselves. Ary was able to completely remove the brassy orange in my hair from a year-old balayage and created this beautiful blend of my natural black hair with my desired darker blonde. I first decided to check out Maxi Salon because it was so close to campus and has a 50% discount for Cal students who show their ID. I've been here 3x. Every single time I walk out of the salon, I've been blown away. Everyone here is extremely friendly, hardworking and amazing at what they do. They really care about their customers and put their best job to make sure you have the cut and style you want. I had a very intense week of interviewing for my dream company and couldn't get myself to focus because I had so much anxiety and doubt, so I randomly decided to take a break and get a haircut. They were nice enough to let me call in as a last minute walk-in and Ary even worked a bit over time to make sure I got the exact cut and style I wanted which she didn't have to do at all. I had the most horrible experience in this salon which almost made me cry. I have long and beautiful Curley hair that I keep natural all the time and avoid using heat. Last week I had a last-minute event and didn't have time to do my hair so I washed my hair and walked into this salon for a simple blowout. This lady decided to do my hair and made me face away from the mirror. She took more than 40 minutes and when she was done, I realized that she put a ton of olive oil on my scalp and fried my hair. My hair and scalp looked so greasy and disgusting and my hair was stuck to my head. I complained to her and she told me that that's how my hair is and she can't do anything about it. It was clear that she had no experience with styling hair at all. The other lady working there told me that she will fix my hair but it took so long and she washed my hair and tried styling it again. It still didn't look that good and I had to pay more than $70 after the student discount and had to leave because I was late. After I washed my hair the next day, my hair is entirely fried and looked burnt. It took me 2 years to grow my curls and now I have to cut them. It breaks my heart, I feel so bad and I wish I didn't give them my money too after they destroyed my hair. read more

I've been coming to see Ellie at Maxi Hair Salon for 4 years now. If you're looking for a salon to call home, I highly recommend this one. Ellie knows all manner of techniques to cut a wide variety of hair types. When I first went in she was able to trim my split ends up and down my long hair without removing length. She takes her time and makes sure each cut is even and gives you lots of opportunity to check in on the progress. Once I settled on a style that I like and get consistently, she kept notes about it for herself so she can reproduce it each time. I really appreciate how kind and warm the staff are. I'm always welcomed when I come in. Ellie also has expertise with curly hair. I recommend her to all my curly haired friends and they all love her. I wish I could give 10 Stars out of 5.
