One of the neighborhood's better mainstays with a stunning array of output for being such a hole in the wall (albeit a cute and tidy hole in the wall!). I became instantly faithful to here when I haphazardly stepped inside several years ago for coffee drinks for myself and my companion. I got a mocha; my friend got a big, tall, steaming coffee. I morosely whipped out a twenty, submitting to the breaking of it on Park Slope's usual price point, and actually jumped and hollered when I found that the total was more than handled by a meager five and a couple of crumpled dollar bills, including the tip. After that, I've rolled through for hot coffee, cold coffee, fancy coffee...sometimes paying like a normal person with paper money, other times buying other goodies so as to hit the card minimum, yet other times emptying a vulgar assortment of coins off to the side to count, sort, and get rid of them - even/especially pennies, nothing feels better. Rarely do I notice the same cashier/barista twice, and yet they seem like they've been there always, with their knowing and welcome ways. Cakes and cookies here are pricer but worth every cent. Their cookies tend to be soft, moist, and packed with flavor. The flat little ginger shortbread cookies, for example, are like five dollars for three but wield the power to comfort an aching and dissatisfied tummy. The cakes, pies, tarts, and other miscellaneous desserts are works of art and never disappoint. Just a few other things I've tried here over the years include a gorgeous, old timey chocolate cake for a coworker's birthday, a key lime pie that I devoured to my face, fruit tarts, and, most recently, an ass kicking lime square...and on more than one occasion, this is where I have come to purchase cute birthday candles at the last moment, flooded with gratitude where there's a place where you can just find something so obscure right on your block. It's often busy here (a good sign) and of course kids are crawling in the whole neighborhood but the difference between here and every other Slope business is that people are courteous and aware - they are in and out, making sure to sort their shit out on the ample bench seating outside rather than cause a line. And only a few people (among which I am one) seem to take advantage of the cute little nook where you can somehow tuck away from it all while gazing out the window to your right, wondering about the lofted office space over your left shoulder, and people-watching the folks who come through straight ahead. You're not gonna see some freelancer camped out here with their MacBook and earbuds for an hour, or a family splayed out and oblivious, leaving after overstaying and making a mess. This is ultimate small business local bakery - cute, homey, clean, efficient, staffed with kind and present people, providing homemade personality and diversity of products, bringing top quality flavor and priceless value dear to residents and visitors alike. This place probably has the best chocolate 'birthday' cake I've ever tried in Brooklyn. I got the Brooklyn Blackout 6 inch cake for a birthday. The cake is a chocolate sponge cake with chocolate pudding and chocolate ganache. Let me tel you something- it's a great cake. Its their bestseller and for a reason. The sponge cake is soft and the pudding just make it deliciously moist but not soggy. A small slice satisfies as it is very rich. I decided to get it a little late so placing an order was not really an option. (I believe you need to place an order about 24-48 hours in advance on weekends, especially for custom orders. I called the morning I needed the cake to see if they have it prepared in store and they did! They also had it in different sizes. You can always count on them to have the Brooklyn blackout. I chose a 6 inch cake with a flower design, which I guess elevated the price ($41 total). Flower design was very pretty! The store itself is tiny and cozy. A Park Slope resident recently brought me a vanilla cake with cream filling and chocolate icing from this bakery (see photos). The only reason this place doesn't have a solid 5-star rating and 1000+ reviews is that people must not realize that it's run by one of the founders of Two Little Red Hens, and most importantly, that they have the same amazing cupcakes. Yes, this place is second only to Two Little Red Hens, only because I didn't see as much of a variety in the cupcakes available when I visited (though they do have more of other kinds of sweets and pastries). Also, it is not quite as accessible as the Upper East Side bakery, tucked away on a quiet street in Park Slope. Just like when you visit the original, you must get the Brooklyn Blackout Cupcake ($4). Some silly people that can't handle their sweets might tell you that it's too rich, but that's exactly where its strength lies. It really is the richest, hugest, most overwhelmingly chocolatey cupcake ever, and it is incredible. The Carrot Cake Cupcake is also delicious, extremely moist yet not as sweet as the Blackout. One definite advantage over Two Little Red Hens is that there wasn't a line out the door when I came here on the weekend. It was around $40-42 (including tax) for the 8 inch cake. The frosting was super sweet. The cake itself was fine, nothing spectacular, especially for the price. Also got a blackout cupcake because about 90% of the Yelp reviews mentioned it. That one was worth the price of admission. We got 4 of the small ones, which ended up costing $6.50 all total. The flavors available are limited so I got 2 all vanilla ones while my husband got 2 vanilla with chocolate frosting ones. It turned out that these were the best non-vegan cupcakes we tried during this trip to NYC. The cupcakes have a light cake that's moist, flavorful and not too sweet. I recently ordered a birthday cake. I have come to this bakery for years and was surprised at the poor quality of the very expensive cake. The cake was dry and crumbling and the flavorless icing was non-existent on parts of the cake. Sometimes, you get a bad cake. That's fine but when I called to talk about it, the owner was incredibly rude. She blamed me for not knowing I was supposed to take the cake out of the refrigerator, after teling me that they always tell customers to do this--which they hadn't, blamed me for not knowing what "type" of cake it was, and did not address the poor quality of the cake at all. I need to leave a review on this bakery! My husband drove by one day i believe it was Monday and went in to order a birthday cake for me. All i said was i would love a Carrot Cake - i love carrot cake! So he went in and ordered a carrot cake for Wednesday. When they asked him what type of decorations he wanted on the cake he said flowers and Happy Birthday Mona written on it. So he picked up the cake on Wednesday and when i opened it we were speechless. Usually when you order a cake with flowers it's those normal piped roses all around and that's it. But this blew us away. Absolutely gorgeous detailed flowers that by the way not only look good but i could actually eat. A lot of the times i can't eat the roses because they are just too heavy. So besides being blown away but this masterpiece of flowers on the cake and the really nice writing as well we had to dig in - although it's almost too pretty to cut it. So we had our first slice and omg soo moist and delicious! Not heavy at all. They also added some sort of nuts in it to give it that extra crunch which went great with the overall soft texture. A big problem with communication.. I ordered a customized birthday cake to pick up for Sunday. For some reason I thought the shop closed at 6pm and unfortunately it closed at 5pm. When we came and pick up the cake at 5:45pm (since the party was at 7pm), the shop was already closed. It was so upsetting that now I don't have customized cake for my daughter. They should have called me before the shop closed or some kind of follow up. I understand part of it is my fault but I wish the shop take some responsibility too since we are spending so much money on this cake. The next day when I called to see if they still has my cake... the person who answered the phone don't have much of explanation.. just said "I am sorry" "I wasn't here last night" "I don't know how that happened". No further explanation... I don't think the she understands how big of this issue for not able to deliver customized cake to the birthday party on time. My sister is trying to order a custom cake for my nephews birthday and decided to give this place a try! Based on recs from family, we decided to come sample some of their cakes as options to consider. We came yesterday afternoon and saw that many people were coming in and out of the bakery and we were excited to try the cakes. We got in (not a big space but some tables for people to eat and for a line to form) and looked at the options they had. My sister had in mind some flavors she wanted to try- banana, marble and reg yellow. We were told banana cupcakes are not available as they are considered custom cakes. The girl helping us said they did not offer any taste testing unless it's for wedding cakes which made sense but upon leaving, the other girl at the register said they offer cake testing if it was paid for- inconsistent answers made us feel a little eh. Although they didn't have banana cupcakes available, they did have the marble and reg yellow cake with vanilla buttercream so we got that in addition to their Brooklyn blackout cupcake that everyone raves about! I was actually most excited about the Brooklyn blackout cup cake as I've had it in the past from other bakeries and it was delicious! We tried the cupcakes after dinner (cut and split so everyone can try some) and: The yellow cake with vanilla buttercream was light and not too sweet which was great. My mom enjoyed this one because it's not overly sweet however everyone noticed the taste of the buttercream which was not as we expected. Like others have mentioned, there is an odd taste and aftertaste to the buttercream that was not enjoyable.. 3 stars the marble cake with vanilla and chocolate buttercream was nothing special to be honest.. no one had much to say about this but no one raves about it either..3 stars Brooklyn blackout was of course the favorite amongst a few of us! The weight of a Brooklyn blackout cake seems to be doubled of those regular cupcakes because the middle is filled with chocolate pudding which was really good! The cake was moist and the pudding was a great addition! A little piece goes a long way! Super dense but flavorful! 5 stars! Overall, I don't think their cupcakes stood out to us besides the Brooklyn blackout which is comparable to other bakeries that have similar selection of cupcakes, if not more. The size of their cupcakes are pretty big and considering the prices for reg cupcakes at 3.5/3.75 a piece, it seemed decent. The Brooklyn blackout was 5.50 but totally get why!
