Beautiful restaurant in the heart of Harlem. Took me back to Mexico with the scenery but quickly disappointed not only with the food but the cost of additives to our order. For $24 we could count the pieces of meat we received with three small tortillas. We also had to pay $3 for a side of sour cream. The drinks were okay and mezcal to touch but had ice which watered them down pretty quick. Would recommend swapping the menu and prices for something better for such a beautiful place. This was my second time visiting and I was sad to see that they no longer had the steak quesadilla that I loved during my first visit. We were a group of 4 and sat outside in the patio area, we came on a Friday and it was fairly busy around 7:30pm. I had the grilled pineapple margarita and it was delicious! My friend ordered the frozen margarita and it was pretty bad, so bad that I tried it and asked the waiter to please change it for something else. She then got the white Sangria and it was also not great. My friend is not picky like me so if she was rejecting alcohol it was pretty bad. For our main course they ordered the Carne asada and I got the salmon. They ordered the steak medium rare, it arrived clearly overcooked, both very well done. The meat did not look like a great cut, it looked like something you would get at a really low budget place where you know better than to order a steak. Fortunately for me my salmon was cooked perfectly medium with a nice crispy skin and was very tasty! My friend's did not have any luck with their drinks and food and considering that everything was overpriced I'm not sure we will return. read more

Awesome happy hour spot. It's a bit tucked away in a quieter neighborhood but still pretty busy. Not too large of a place but they have a bar area with longer tables and stools and tables outside as well. A plus is that they offer happy hour on Fridays as well. Service was good and fast. Tried the sangrias which were not too strong but refreshing. I was really hungry and opted to go for an entree rather than the happy hour small bites. I ordered the Camarones al Chipotle which was shrimp in chipotle tequila sauce with mashed potatoes. Very delicious and good size portion. The shrimp were very large and plenty. read more

Quick! What's faster: A sloth wading through molasses in the dead of winter, or the service at La Diagonal? If you answered the sloth, you're right. Congrats. My mom, son, and I stopped by La Diagonal for brunch. We had reservations for 13:00, and arrived at 13:03. The waiter--there was one waiter for the entire restaurant, plus the bartender, plus someone bussing--grumbled that there was a toddler. La Diagonal does not have high chairs--just booster seats. In a nod to danger, La Diagonal didn't bother to get booster seats with straps, necessitating a constant eye on junior to make sure he didn't fling himself out of the seat. At 13:23, the waiter finally decides to take our order. Mind you, he's not running around like a wild man; the restaurant is fairly slow. It just takes him twenty minutes to finally decide we should order. My mom orders the pancakes; I order the huevos rancheros. My mom wants an iced tea, which they don't have. (No ice tea?) I order a mezcal. Thankfully, since it comes directly from the bottle and I ordered the mezcal neat, the staff didn't screw it up. Frankly, it's the only thing they didn't screw up. Then we wait. And wait. and wait and wait and wait At 13:54--over thirty minutes after we ordered, and nine minutes shy of an hour since we arrived--we get our food. One'd think that, given the time it took to cook the food, it'd be magical. Nope, not at all. The huevos rancheros were small and indistinguishable from run-of-the-mill huevos rancheros at pick-any-chain-almost-Mexican-restaurant-in-this-country. The pancakes were almost good. "Fruit" meant a small strawberry and a chipmunk's fistful of blueberries. One of the pancakes was apparently delicious, but the other was charred crisp. They tried to hide it, placing the blackened side face down on the plate. But really, you can't hide charred pancakes. The bottom was so overcooked that it looked like they dipped the pancake in molten lava for while, just for grins. We placed the pancake coal-side up. The waiter comes by, looks at the charred pancake, and takes the plate away. He comes back with the check, and asks how things were. (Mind you, that's the first time he asked. Not right after the food came. Not when we were waiting for almost an hour. At the check.) I say I wasn't impressed by burnt pancakes after an hour wait. To be fair, he took the price of the pancakes off the bill. But frankly, not having to pay for carbonized pancakes was the best part of the brunch. read more

During Covid good service is hard to find and he was busy but did a great job! We got two rounds of the white wine sangria it was so good! I mixed whatever was on top in the second time and it was even better. I got the crab guacamole and there was crab in every single bite loved it. I didn't get a picture of the chicken fajita but it was great as well! I want to love this place because they're in my neighborhood but I'm always disappointed by the service. They've treated me and my friends wrongly more than once and tonight I vow never to come back. The food is fine but the service is downright disrespectful. One time I came with a group and they charged us for an extra drink. We were 6 ppl and ordered two rounds but somehow we were charged for 13 drinks. They kept telling us over and over that we could never receive more drinks than what's ordered...the manager came out and was completely useless. End of story we end up paying for a drink that was never ordered and never came. We came back again tonight and ordered sangrias. Long story short we got charged for $90 worth of sangria because we ordered individual sangrias. We saw another table order the same amount of sangria except in a pitcher and it was only $50. We asked him why it wasn't on the menu, he said we didn't ask. The manager said the same thing. Shacked up in one of their heated outdoor private cabin rooms yesterday for brunch -- such a cozy experience. The carnitas hash and panqueques I had were fantastic. The hash was perfectly seasoned, not too fatty! The pancakes were fluffy and lovely -- fully satisfied my sweets craving. The churros were crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. Sooooo... I really want to support local business. I am doing my part by ordering out. But, y'all - I can't spend $50 for an appetizer and a glass of wine. To be fair, The Octopus dish I ordered from here was tasty after I threw it on the stove to heat. (It basically froze after traveling through 20 degree temperatures outside to get here) But the portion was exactly what one would enjoy in the restaurant. Came here on a random Sunday afternoon for mezcal-based cocktails with friends. What a delight! The two cocktails I had were the Mayan Summer and Hecho en Harlem. My favorite was the Mayan Summer due to the summery, sweet delight from the mango and the spice from the habanero bitters and salt rim. The rim depends on which bartender makes your drink since there is some variability, but whatever I got the first time, was a perfect balance between sweetness and spice. The Hecho en Harlem, as described is a nice, summery drink as the cucumber fuels a freshness to be sought after during a hot day. I came here on another weekday to have dinner and drinks with friends so the following is a review based on their food selection - the guacamole traditional for $13 is a little skimpy on the portions, but delicious. All three types of salsas were so delicious - each with its unique character. My favorite was the habanero, which has a spicy kick, but just as delicious. The carrot adds a nice, vibrant color as well and was perfect with the unlimited tortilla chips. I also got the tostaditas de cangrejo which I wasn't super impressed with as it was hard to eat, and lacked distinct flavor - especially in the midst of the strong salsas that came out with the chips. The crab meat was okay, but nothing too memorable. Overall, a nice location within in Harlem - they have outdoor seating which rocks and I would definitely come back here for drinks. read more

This is a chic, cool place, great for either a date or casual dining. The food is excellent and the service is too, but it's overpriced. We were 3 and shared the: -queso fundido: excellent -guacamole: good -tostadas de cangrejo (crab): ok, wouldn't repeat, not too much taste to them -enchiladas de camarón (shrimp): excellent, my favorite dish here! -pollo relleno (stuffed chicken): good -yuca fries: good but I'm not a fan of yuca in general -tres leches cake: ok but seemed more like a regular cake (it wasn't moist as a regular 3 leches), I wouldn't repeat -flan: thicker/richer than usual but good In general all 3 of us left feeling like we had a great meal and were quite full. I'm taking one star off because of the expensive prices (see picture of menu). Also, the prices on the menu on their website (and menu in general) are outdated and things are actually about $2 more expensive than what their online menu says. Update your online menu! read more

Came here through a recommendation for good dinner at a chill venue. Monday evening and plenty of seating available, settling in at a couple stools at the bar. Asked the bartender if there was a happy hour and he said yes, and that he could rattle it off. So we asked and he mentioned the guava margaritas are in happy hour (though never said the price). Got one of those ($?) and had the La Ensalada ($12) for an entree. Margarita is pretty good, not all that strong yet easy to drink. Salad is mostly spinach with avocado, tomato and a tangy vinaigrette. Fairly light that kept me satisfied. Friend got the tacos which are overpriced at 3 for $18 - he was hungry soon after leaving the restaurant. Food came out fast and the bartender was fine. However, they were lacking with flavor in their tortillas for their tacos and chips. If they swapped for something more fresh and homemade, I would feel it's more worth the price. But $18 for 3 small tacos with no sides on store bought tortillas isn't for me. The service could have been a little more speedy as well for how few people were there when we arrived. We always talk about trying a new place but the other local options really just don't hold a candle to La Diagonal. You can tell this establishment invested in creating structures that would be comfortable through winter, and they succeeded! 2) The food came out very quickly, and was fresh and delicious. While one of only 2 other parties for an early brunch, the server insisted he couldn't seat us in a corner because it was set for 4. We took the hi-top for two in an not so desirable section. When our food arrived, he decided to pull up a second table because the table was too small for the food. So we end sitting in a cold section, with a stench at a table for 4 in the end. The sausage links we requested turned out to be minced chorizo. We were clearly asked if they were links. Lastly, the tea selection was not one we wanted. We asked if it was ok to use our own and he brought hot water. When the check arrived, we were charged $6 for the hot water. He tried to later explain it's like "bringing your own wine". I wanted tacos but my only option was to buy 4 for $21. More than what I intended to eat, but ok. I ordered that and a $14 mojito. A few minutes later I over heard the same server list the items off of their happy hour list. Insert wow face emoji. "You have happy hour? You didn't tell me." Oh, $8 margaritas and $4 tacos. The enchiladas were cooked well and the street corn was so good. The drinks were good here as well. Try the passion fruit margarita (yum). If that doesn't interest you they have a very large bar with great options. The serves were good; the serves are knowledgeable of the menu and give great suggestions. The lighting is very dim so keep that in mind if your vision is bad. There is in door seating and outside seating. And overall is a good place to get some Latin food. read more
