Back before I had explored the Mission and knew what a true burrito was, I was a lowly, poor Cal student who enjoyed the fine dining of Americanized burritos. These aren't terrible burritos, but they definitely cannot compete with those you would find in any taqueria in the Mission. However, I will say this - they offer healthier choices, such as black beans only, no rice, less greasy meat options, and spinach wraps. The burritos are also a manageable size, and they're dirt-cheap, far cheaper than a Mission burrito, so it's your call. I'll grab another for old time's sake if I'm in the area. read more

It's nothing exceptional and tastes great to me because it's nostalgic of my late night college days. It still is open late with lots of vegetarian and the one vegan option. Salsa bar has radishes and 5 types of salsa, all mediocre. Fast impersonal service. The price reflects the $0.30 discount if you pay by cash and take out; otherwise, they add on the extra charges if those conditions don't apply to you. read more

The food here is average. I like sauce bar and how they chop up cilantro and onion for you. My reasoning for 3 stars only is because the service here is really bad. The Nachos are microwaved in plastic container which is not authentic at all. I expected more, and I will not be coming back again. Those nachos presented themselves like a plate of leftovers, blended, and then tossed in the microwave. Awful presentation, and even if I surpassed that the taste couldn't even make up for it. La Burrita is me and my friends' go to Mexican restaurant in Berkeley! It's in a great location and has amazing food. Everytime I come here I get the carne asada tacos rancheros and they never cease to amaze me. They also have a great selection of salsas and light, crispy chips with your meal! This has got to be my favorite place for a burrito---not just any burrito---A WET BURRITO! It's a huge burrito, covered in sour cream, enchilada sauce, pico de gallo, and guacamole with chips with cheese on the side. It is so big, I usually eat it in 2-3 meals. I like their salsa a lot and usually add scoops of it onto the already wet burrito. I don't get anything but the wet burrito here. It usually makes me really thirsty later though. It's probably pretty bad for you but it's definitely one of the must-haves in Berkeley. read more

Oh, "La Boo", you aren't even authentic Mexican food! I just don't come here anymore because after trying everything on the menu, I can only be satisfied by the vegetarian burrito because it doesn't taste nasty or greasy. I wouldn't come here craving for Mexican food, but I'd come here to satisfy some munchies because it tastes so heavy. Everything here is just a step above Taco Bell / Del Taco food, but it's open late and it's "relatively" cheap ($3-$5) so it's a favorite for the college crowd. If anything, I'd recommend their super nachos because they give you lots of food. Good enough to share with two people or if you are particularly drunk. Look elsewhere for authentic cuisine, but look here for convenience and munchies. They accept credit cards, which is a bonus. read more

My friend and I went to see Weezer a few months ago, but before we did, he suggested we stop by La Burrita for dinner. The place isn't exactly spacious, but that isn't a problem. I order a steak burrito with a bunch of alterations that I can't really remember. I do remember that they got my order right, which was impressive since so many places forget to incorporate my alterations into the order. The burrito was big and filling, but definitely not the best burrito I've ever had. But it was cheap, so that made me happy. Despite being such a popular destination, I've only been here twice in my three years at Cal. If you're not sure what to get, go for the two steak enchilada plate! My friend recommended it to me stating that each enchilada was as big as a burrito - they're not - but overall it was still quite good for being just above $7! There was a great amount of steak and the rest of the ingredients were well proportioned. For $7 there was a good amount of rice and beans, with substantial amounts of guac and sour cream. on the side. This is the quintessential cheap, college, Mexican place. Its open until 2am each night. Though I enjoy a La Burrita at any time or the day or night there's nothing quite like showing up at midnight on a Thursday night when school is in. Since its located right below the fraternities you get lots of drunk frat boys and sorority girls showing up. Quite hilarious. My favorite burrito is the large, ground beef burrito on the yellow chipotle tortilla. Its a nice creamy mixture of beans, beef, guacamole, and sour cream. read more

Let me preface this by saying that my boyfriend is OBSESSED with La Burrita. So going in, I obviously had high expectations. Much as I love my five star restaurants, I think I love the little hole-in-the-walls even more, especially when they don't pretend to be anything else. We ordered a small ground beef burrito and a small "wet" carne asade burrito. Trust me - the smalls were definitely enough for the two of us. My boyfriend had the ground beef burrito on a regular basis when he was in school and it was just as good as he had said it would be. The "wet" burrito - dressed like an enchilada and enjoyed with a fork and knife - wasn't quite as good, but it's also not probably something I would have ordered on my own. All in all, I will definitely be back here the next time I'm in Berkeley. read more

This is one of my favorite cheap Mexican places to get my steak quesadilla fix. I always get their Super quesadilla that comes with cheese and steak with a side of lettuce, guacamole and sour cream. All this for $6 or $7 for a good sized quesadilla. Sometimes if they make it too hastily, the dish is super oily and you just have to wipe it off but other than that, the dish is super tasty! You get a free bag of chips and you can fill up little containers of salsa. This is a huge meal for super cheap and it tastes really good. Pretty decent burritos. They aren't great, but you don't really get tired of the burrito before you finish it, which is the case with a lot of other burrito joints, or whopper wraps like the nearby chipotle. The chips are thin and crispy but can taste a bit stale [but they're free/included with the burrito]. The carne asada burrito with everything, fajita burrito, and wet burrito are my favorites. They get a fat star for being open late alongside top dog [figuratively and literally]. You will know of la burrita if you're a Berkeley student. First let me start out saying i eat at alot of mexican spots, taco trucks and such. This is not the best place for a greasy burrito or a super saucey taco. But it does have its own taste to it. Its more of a americanized taco, burrito joint. What i like about it is how they make it their burritos. They mix all their ingredents together for a well balance bite. Everytime you take a bite it has a little bit of everything, not like the burrito trucks and taco trucks. At the taco trucks they just whoop everything together and sometimes you start out with only meat and then you end up with only sour cream or rice. At La Burrita every bite you have an equal amount of rice meat and sauce. Food: Taste great, something differnt from the other burritos joints. Service: Fast, prompt. Really?? This place is pretty bad. The one thing I give them is that their salsas are actually pretty good, and there's a good number to choose from. But everything is pretty bland. I knew I was in trouble the moment I noticed it had won 'best burrito' from the Daily Cal, something like 10 years in a row. Call me a cynic, but students have no taste. Same thing happens in every college town, the restaurants right next to campus get all the foot traffic, and somehow all the rave reviews, no matter how much they suck. La Burrita is a prime example of this phenomenon, it's a stones throw from campus (even for someone with a weak arm like me), and as a consequence it's always busy. That doesn't mean it's good, because it isn't. The food lacks the wonderful cohesiveness that good Mexican usually has. The flavours in a good burrito meld together into a wonderful whole, at La Burrita, they just kinda sit there blandly. Good Mexican has a wide array of textures, all interacting, La Burrita, its all kinda chewy. I guess the moral of this story is always eat where the locals eat, never where the students eat. read more

WET BURRITO i come from a small town and the closest think i knew about burritos before college was the local taco bell... imagine how lost i was when i first heard "WET BURRITO" wet burritos however have become my favorite. i'll admit its a bit weird eating a burrito with a knife and fork but it's well worth it to get that extra sauce and melted cheese that blankets the burrito. whether its an early lunch or a late night munch- La Burrita is the place to go. until next time cheers! read more

Five small tables in the front, a few out back, place a little worn around the edges, service polite but rote. Standard range of Mexican items, including salads which were the draw for me today. I tried the taco salad with shredded beef, it came with chopped romaine lettuce, cheese, sour cream guacamole, pico de gallo, all atop a layer of chips. Actually a pretty good size salad for $6.95, and the shredded beef was really good, had been simmered along time with onions and peppers and was really tender and flavorful. This used to be an essential foodsource during freshman year and I still can't get enough! Their burritos are cheap, big and pretty damn delicious. Go with the special ones for a little bit more, the sour cream and guacamole make the burrito less dry. Their wet burritos are also good too with a thin tangy enchilada sauce and lots of cheese. I love their thin chips. Their salsa could be better but it gets the job done. It's not the best mexican food out there or even the most authentic but it's tasty enough for me. First thing you should do when you come here is look at the sign. It reads, "La Burrita: Fine Mexican Food," or something like it. Notice that there's no mention of the place being a taqueria. That should set off an alarm immediately. I'm a masochist, so I tried one of their steak tacos anyway. It was the sloppiest endeavour ever -- it was more like a burrito, but without enough tortilla to wrap it. Their chips are mediocre, although their salsa is passable. If you're going to eat here, their burritos are the safe bet. Anyone who thinks this place has 'the best burrito ever' needs to go to SoCal or even the Mission District in San Francisco. La Burrita is for poor college students - cheap food, convenient location, and students' tastebuds aren't usually refined until they graduate and start earning the big bucks. That being said, I went to La Burrita when I was a student at Cal. I didn't like it back then, and I still don't like it now. The food is bland, the rice is too ketchuppy, and their menu is so generic. For latino fare, I much prefer Juan's Place or Tacubaya, but they are too far away and expensive for most students. So, kids, study hard so that you can afford better food in the future. And coerce your parents into taking you to Chez Panisse for your graduation dinner. ;) read more
