I first came to know of Cancun about 10 years ago. It was the first restaurant I've been to with an extensive salsa bar which I absolutely love. They're also known for making their food with fresh ingredients and having hand made tortillas. I used to regularly order their mole burrito and at the time it was pretty pricey, about $15 dollars. But hey, it was a treat for me. I came back a few years back and it seemed like they were trying new things; perhaps ownership/management had changed? Maybe their current way of running wasn't sustainable after COVID?There were now kiosks you ordered on and they raised their prices and started doing ceviche and rotisserie. The salsa bar was gone and they even started using fried fish for their fish burrito instead of grilled. At this point in time it was 20 dollars at least for a standard burrito (beans, rice, meat, etc.). For me, it was not sustainable to eat here and so I haven't been back until recently. My recent experiences with Cancun can be summed up in these words: same food, different feeling. They brought back the salsa bar, got rid of the kiosks, and still have pretty nice staff. The food hasn't changed all that much; the chips are still phenomenal, the ingredients are still fresh, and the salsa is so good. But with the price increases, the experience just feels different. My burrito came out to be 23 dollars after tax. How do I even justify that even if I would consider it a treat? read more

This review is based on a delivery order that we placed via Uber Eats. This order was for 5 people, 2 people ordered burritos, 2 of us ordered tacos, 1 person ordered a burrito bowl. For the entire order with tax and tip it came out to $154.41 For my order I had the vegan tacos and a side of beans and rice. I gave 3 stars for this order because the image for the crispy tacos shows 3 tacos when in reality it is only 1 taco. The image seems purposely deceptive. On their delivery webpage it shows an image of 3 tacos for the price of $7.99. In reality it is only one taco for $7.99. Not only is that overly priced for one taco, the picture should show one taco if that's what is actually being sold for $7.99. I will try another location for Mexican food next time, as I value clarity in what I am ordering. read more

I've been coming here since 12 years ago, back when they still had an extensive salsa bar. Back then, the food was delicious, the ingredients were fresh, and the service was great. While the food is still consistent (the super quesadilla there is my favorite with their homemade flour tortilla yum), my recent visit made me feel that this restaurant has changed throughout the years. First off, a quesadilla with some free chips on the side now comes to $19 after tax and before tip. Secondly, the salsa bar is now very limited to only a few choices. Better than during Covid, but it hasn't fully recovered to its prime days, it seems. When I picked up my order, I only received 1 empty salsa container. I asked for another one but the man who was cooking told me that an extra container would be extra charge -- $1 something. I ate my quesadilla at the restaurant, and even for a small Asian girl like myself, it wasn't filling so I went back to the counter to order another one to-go. At this point, I've already spent about $40 on 2 quesadillas alone. The girl working at the cashier was calling orders this time so she called my number, and immediately said, "oh I'm sorry this paper bag ripped -- let me give you a new one." The same man who was cooking approached her and asked her why she was giving me another paper bag. When he realized the first bag ripped, he immediately told her, "No! Give her the smaller bag here instead" all said and done right in front of me... While I still love their food, it's blatantly obvious that Cancun is now trying to nickel and dime their customers on top of already charging more on their menu prices. Perhaps they expanded too quickly when they opened the Oakland Airport location and need to make the money back somehow? Regardless, it was a disappointing experience and I don't think I will be back anytime soon. read more

First time going to the place across the street haha. We both got the super burrito. It was HUGE. So delectable. Also they have a salsa bar!!! Tried the mango salsa and avocado salsa. Also love that they have a student discount. Will definitely be back. read more

This was the go-to burrito back when I was at Cal. Took the family and we were all really impressed. Salsa bar was amazing -- maybe 10 choices. Burritos are $15+, but come with chips. The tortillas are made there on the side of the restaurant and were slightly thick and so flavorful. Had the vegan al pastor and it was really good. The seating area is bright and lively music was playing. Service was medium-fast. read more

Grabbed a super burrito here and the service here is speedy. The interior is comfortably bright and they have several salsas to pick from. Burrito with al pastor was well wrapped and flavorful. In a nutshell; pricey but expected downtown type priced decent Mexican food The atmosphere of the establishment does indeed exude its namesake. There's a Salsa station on the side for your chips that's usually accompanied by your order or dish, but for the price, I was hoping the salsa station also has a chips station you can just grab chips alike to similar other establishments. The order looked and tasted good but I'd say doesn't really match the price, but it's to be expected as I'm sure it's expensive to upkeep any business stationed in a downtown setting. Overall neat place but I'll probably lean to trying the other establishments nearby. read more

From 2-5pm daily Cancun Sabor Mexicano has a happy hour deal: half off all alcohol and soft drinks with purchase of food. Whether or not you partake in said offer though, it's clear that the gentleman proprietor who mans the register enjoys serving up alcohol. It wasn't just the quaint bon mot served up with my Negra Modelo ($6.99) but the announcement of each Mojito being ready for pick-up. In what can only be described as an operatic voice, the lyrical pronouncement of yet another Mojito being ready for another diner is quite an entertaining hat trick. Cancun Sabor Mexicano though, while certainly not the best of Mexican fare to be found in Berkeley, doesn't really need hat tricks. I ordered up two Street Taco platters (4 tacos, choice of protein, $13.99) and found that flavor profile coupled with volume and ambiance proved thoroughly satisfying. Food facts first. Carne Asada is my go-to protein in places like this. Here it was a version less tasty than desired. The beef seemed to be cut from a center piece, with no char or dark edges. The beans and salsa did most of the heavy lifting and I'd not again choose carne asada as a protein here which is okay as the Al Pastor and Carnitas options were more tasty. The taco plates were served with pre-made chips (I prefer house-made) which were also improved by the array of fresh salsas (help yourself) from the salsa bar. The ambiance here is nice. not fancy-nice, but casually stylish and comfortable, with big wooden communal tables and smaller tables for smaller groups. The volume of eateries in this area leaves me jealous of those who live in Berkeley. Cancun, despite this, has endured here for many years. I won't be racing back but I left fully satisfied and could easily envision a return. read more

I tried this place last Saturday before a Cal game. Food is not authentic, it taste is very Americanized, similar to Taco Bell. The tortillas might be homemade but are not fresh. The meat they give in the meal is a small portion especially for the price. The horchata tastes like water. In addition the cashier is not friendly and doesn't pay attention to what you say. She took the order for pozole only for the cook to tell us it was not ready. One of the worse Mexican restaurants I have ever eaten at. Edit to Response to Owner: If you are not trying to be authentic Mexican Restaurant why have a name as a Mexican restaurant? Your restaurant might be inspired by Mexican food but is not authentic. How do you explain the water down Horchata or rude service from cashier? How you explain the cashier not knowing the Pozole was not ready? If you are going to respond at least respond to everything. I just love me some Cancun Taqueria! I have been going here for years and just tried it recently and it hasn't lost its touch. This place has THEE BEST TACOS EVER! Their chicken crispy tacos and carnitas crispy tacos are so good that I always get them. Their burritos and quesadillas are killer too! What makes this place great is that they make their tortillas in house and it smells so good in there. It also has lots of tables and beautiful Mexican decor everywhere. For a taqueria it can be pricey but the quality of food is so worth it. Their staff is friendly and can help you pick from their extensive menu. They even have a location at the Oakland airport in terminal one and the quality of food is still top tier. Their parking situation can be challenging but there is parking available but you may have to circle the block a few times to find a spot! It's basically across the street from Cal's campus so that's why it's challenging but definitely worth a trip if you're in Berkeley. Tell Rafael I sent ya! read more

Known for their fresh ingredients and quality flavors, Cancun Sabor Mexicano (or mononymously known as Cancun) is one of the few more upscale Mexican restaurants in Berkeley. As soon as you enter, their wall gives a brief description about their food and touts their commitment to serving strictly non-GMO meals. Like many of their other customers, I'm a foodie who also tries to keep their figure, so I can appreciate this. My family ordered two ceviches, fajitas, and tacos to share, and everything turned out to be just enough. While the ceviches lacked flavor, everything else was pretty solid. Specifically, the Al pastor tacos were phenomenal, and I have zero complaints. One gripe I have with fajitas is that way too often, the meat will come out dry and overcooked: a result of too much contact with the hot skillet. Cancun's carne asada fajitas are a breath of fresh air: wonderfully seasoned and perfectly tender. If I'm in the mood for Mexican food, now I know my go-to spot! read more

$17 for a totra that was underwhelming. Minimal meat (even tho it was supposed to be the most amongst all menu items). Bread was hard. Torta was small. Worse than subway and worst carnitas torta that i have since my first experience in 2008. Also called my number and gave me something else that isn't a torta. If I return it definitely won't be for torta or burrito, since it is clearly overpriced and filled with mostly carbs. read more

Great spot for Mexican in downtown Berkeley. Pricing: A bit expensive, but comparable to other spots in the area. Burrito with chips is $16-20 Food: The shrimp burrito is good and I appreciate the salsa bar they have. They have 6-8 salsas that you can try that range from mild to very spicy. Most of them are pretty solid and worth a try if you enjoy salsa. Location: Restaurant is in a narrow street. Parking is limited next to the restaurant, so you will likely have to park in a garage nearby. Service: Staff are friendly and food comes out fairly quick. Generally not too busy during lunch on weekdays. Seating: Plenty of seating inside, but no seating outside. read more

Was looking for an outdoor spot to grab a quick drink on a weekday evening - there was open seating here so we stopped by. There was no line inside which was nice, we were able to order quickly and were given a number. The only item requiring preparation was a Margarita which they said they'd bring out to our table. We didn't order any food. After 10 mins of waiting I went in to check and the person who served as our cashier then made my drink and handed it to me. The service was great, clean setting, good salsa. That being said... The post pandemic menu is revised. Now, they nickel and dime you on ingredients for a burrito. Ended up getting a $15 veggie burrito that was completely underwhelming. They charge for salsa, so the meal ended up costing more. You are given one small cup for the salsa bar, which will force you to return to the salsa bar for refills. We will not be returning anytime soon. read more

I hate to see all these negative reviews about pricing. Especially when the food quality is great and everyone who works there are nice. This was my 1st time there, on a Friday night. Not crowded at all inside or outside seating. They didn't even rush me to leave as they were getting ready to close. I got the street tacos, aqua Fresca and a chocolate cream dessert for about $30. Shared my friends chips and got the mango salsa from the bar. I was very satisfied and would go there again. Noticed a few people come in for take out orders too. Would go there again as it's easy to get to being close to Downtown Berkeley BART. Good place to go with friends or alone. read more

This was a three star review because it is quite different now. I'm trying not to punish them for not being what they were many years ago pre-pandemic. When they had kicking food and all of the salsas. Unfortunately, things have changed and they don't have the selection of salsas (only three).They have a Cevicheria now and it turns out that was the better deal. My husband bought a carnitas plate that came with a salad, picked veggies, and something else. The carnitas was ok. Unfortunately, I got the bowl, something the didn't have when I was there many, many years ago. The tacos were $7.55 for one. Yikes! But the bowl, a dream of mine since going gluten free was a dream. I wish it tasted as good. First, the salad was on the bottom, something that I am not into. Good news, it didn't wilt. Bad news, the rice and beans were tepid, which is why there was no wilting. Next, there was meat and veggies. Unfortunately, those veggies were cut way too big and consisted of veggies I don't like. Summer squash (yech) and bell pepper (not cooked long enough - my taste). I put all these veggies on my husband's platter and he loved them. So I didn't like these veggies. Back to the salad, I know it's a thing to put salad on top of or under food that's being consumed, but I'm American and eat my salad in a separate bowl. But it became a four star review because my the people who work there are super nice. And the manager (I assume that's who he was) walked around to each table to check in on us and see how we were doing. That was an awesome touch. Thank you. The restaurant is located in a small side street off of Shattuck. My friend and I walked, but the street is pretty narrow and busy in this area so I'm not sure if parking would be easy to find. There is outdoor and indoor seating and it was no problem at all to find a little table for my friend and I to sit at even though they were relatively busy! We ordered separately from the register. I got four carnitas street tacos and a strawberry aguafresca. (The other flavor of aguafresca available was horchata.) My card was having issues but thankfully they had change for $100 which surprised me as most places don't normally accept bills over $50. After ordering, they hand you one of those pucks that vibrate when your order is ready. There is also self-serve water available. My friend and I chatted for awhile at a table. The wait wasn't very long, but it was a tad loud inside because of how busy the place is. Once our food was ready, we took our little order number devices all the way down to the end of the counter alongside the wall past the register where our food was ready. The food was delicious!! I devoured two of the tacos and got a to-go box to eat the last two later on. They came with radishes, pickled jalapeños, carrots, a wedge of lime, and tortilla chips. The aguafresca was refreshing and on the sweeter side. I took it with me and sipped on it all day :) After we finished our meal, there is a bucket to stack your tray in near the door. Overall, a wonderful place to eat with quality food and friendly service. Will definitely be coming back! read more

First few bites of the carnitas torteria were delightful and packed with flavor, but the high amount of grease became unbearable and made the dish difficult to finish. Love that fresh local Acme Bread was used, but unfortunately it was drenched in grease from the carnitas. Writing this review a month late and I still vividly remember how immensely greasy the carnitas were. Fortunately, the green salad that the torta comes with helped balance out the fear of clogging my arteries. Highly recommend ordering another protein. Although they offer an extensive menu, Jamie W. and I recently ordered the same thing we ordered over two years ago. Back then, it was called the Paleo Plate, although we probably overdid our trips up to the salsa bar. We were pleased to see Cancun on the Grubhub app and noticed the Paleo Plate has since become the $15.95 Paleo Bowl. For easier delivery presumably. The ingredients are the same - choice of meat, grilled vegetables (peppers, zucchini, onion), nopales, lettuce, and fresh pico de gallo. Do try their delicious soup! Rare in Mexican restaurants in the US; way more common in Mexico. Tasty and (I think) vegan.

One of my favorite places as a kid and the tradition to go here has not stopped. But I haven't been here in a while! And things are a little bit different after the pandemic. You will notice the menu has changed and I am wondering if this place has new owners now? My go to is the Nachos with steak & black beans! They are still pretty good! - and the workers behind the kitchen are so hard working! This is mainly why I am rating Cancun a 4 star. I saw they have ceviche so I ordered the ceviche verde - the cost is $19.00 - this was definitely a mistake. I'm not sure how you can mess up ceviche but it has too much lime, the shrimp is boiled beforehand (instead of it being cooked in the lime juices). & they put the green salsa from the bar on the side ... . which actually spilled in my To-go bag! I have attached a picture for reference of the ceviche. It's just not worth 19.00. The ambiance is casual, there is an added space where Mexican sandwiches are being made (not Mexican tortas style ... it's more like the American fancy Sandwich with a "Mexican" twist. But they do also have other things like rotisserie chicken, tortillas and the ceviche. To summarize my review of this place, Cancun needs a little bit of work, as the previous owners (if the ownership is the issue) set the bar pretty high! I give two stars for the nostalgia. It's just not the same. Just being honest there is a hint of a dirty mop smell when you walk in not a food smell so that was off putting. Non the less I wanted to give them a second chance to redeem themselves after the burrito I received that was underwhelming. I ordered 1 crispy steak taco - the meat which was pre made (understandable) was cold not understandable. The whole taco was full of oil the wrapper was soaked in oil. The chips were extremely oily. The steak had absolutely no flavor and the cheese was slices that were not melted because the meat was not hot. Extremely disappointing. I am happy I followed my first mind to only get one item. Sad to say I will not be returning to one of my old favorite Mexican restaurants.
