I give two stars for the nostalgia. It's just not the same. Just being honest there is a hint of a dirty mop smell when you walk in not a food smell so that was off putting. Non the less I wanted to give them a second chance to redeem themselves after the burrito I received that was underwhelming. I ordered 1 crispy steak taco - the meat which was pre made (understandable) was cold not understandable. The whole taco was full of oil the wrapper was soaked in oil. The chips were extremely oily. The steak had absolutely no flavor and the cheese was slices that were not melted because the meat was not hot. Extremely disappointing. I am happy I followed my first mind to only get one item. Sad to say I will not be returning to one of my old favorite Mexican restaurants. I ordered the "Cancun Salad" with lime dressing. I received the lamest, most basic salad with a giant scoop of wet, watery, tomato salsa poured over the top. Terrible. So much for "Lime Dressing." The fajita chicken I added to the salad was like rubber. Comal is better food. Go there. read more

I loved it! I got a super quesadilla which was a great size for a full meal. My friend got the enchiladas which while a little pricey, came with 3 enchiladas with beans and rice on the side - enough to have two meals out of it! The staff were very friendly and the service was quick. Also, they make all their own salsas fresh daily and you can tell! I got a mild one (forget the name) and the traditional salsa (hot) and both were delicious. Will definitely go back to try some of the other options! read more

First and last time here! We decided to visit this location because of the salsa bar. Well, unfortunately, we won't be returning. We both ordered beverages and one order of fajitas. The cost was almost $60. The one serving of fajitas had maybe 13 little pieces of chicken and the tortillas were not good. The Jamaica agua Fresca was also the worst we've ever had. It was extremely bitter and when I shared this, he handed me a cup of sugar. For almost $60, we expected better service and definitely, better food! One and done! read more

This a a fair departure from most of the burritos I've tasted around here. Cancún's style kinda tastes more of homemade Mexican food. And I don't mean low quality or un-excellent. There is just a taste there that I don't see replicated elsewhere. The two standouts in this home style taste is the house made tortillas of course but also the cook on the beans. Cancún is truly a sabor de Mexico!!! Upon entering you are greeted by beautiful murals and delicious aromas, the atmosphere is welcoming and inviting! The menu offers so many amazing options but we had to go with the Lorenzas (it was the Monday Special) that came with freshly made flour tortillas, Monterrey cheese, carne asada with onions and cilantro but everything on the menu looked appetizing and yummy !!!! The staff is welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The salsas were all savory. They even have a vegan option, my daughter ordered the vegan Al pastor burrito that she said was mouthwatering! Atmosphere: Cancun had a bustling and lively atmosphere, and the place is great for groups. There are tables for two and four, and there are long tables for larger parties. The wooden tables and rustic vibe give the place a cute charm. Food: I ordered the chicken quesadilla. This dish came with chips as a side, and there is a salsa bar with a plethora of salsa choices for all types of palates. The quesadilla was flavorful, and the guacamole was a nice touch. I couldn't really taste the cheese, so more cheese would be great. The cheese is within the tortilla itself, so this was a bit drowned out. Also it was semi hard to eat due to the lack of cheese pulling the ingredients together--it was more of a taco-like dish. However, the flavors were great, and I'd recommend it. Overall, the place is good. The food is flavorful, and the salsa bar is great. Been coming here for years - glad they made it through the pandemic okay. Lots of great options for tacos, burritos, agua frescas, and of course salsas. I recently went to Cancun Sabor Mexicano in Berkeley. I got the burrito de vegetales- grilled vegetables w/ black beans, rice, & guacamole. I had it customized vegan by omitting the sour cream & cheese. It would be nice to be able to add tofu to the burrito like some of the taquerias do in the Mission for vegans dining here. The burrito was quite alright. It comes w/ corn chips & the salsa bar is the crest jewel of dining here. More than a dozen varieties of salsa are here that all are quite spicy. Even the mild salsa is spicy so proceed w/ caution perhaps starting w/ mild before moving up to the more spicy salsas. They use quality ingredients here that are local & organically grown from their own farms from their beans to their produce. Corn tortillas & corn chips are made from scratch in house using a traditional family recipe. I will be back. read more

This review is just about their burritos and salsa bar. Look, the prices here aren't that bad for Downtown Berkeley. Comal Next Door is the next best burrito spot and very close in price. I think Cancun is the better burrito spot (Comal is overall better) in Downtown Berkeley. Chipotle is on a tier of its own... The ingredients here are amazing. I always get a carne asada burrito with avocado, pinto beans, and pico de gallo. The carne asada is always so juicy here. It's grilled so it just tastes better. When I take a bite of the burrito I teleport to a period in my life in Mexico where the food was simple but delicious. Not oily, not dry, flavorful, not hectic. Just a simple carne asada burrito. The reason I gave this spot four stars instead of five stars is because they charge for the #$%@ salsa. Are you kidding me?! Look, I get it with the burritos. I would easily pay 30 dollars for that burrito. But 75 cents for salsa containers is mind-boggling. I think the guy hooked it up with one extra container...but my guy, I need A LOT of salsa. They no longer add rice to regular burritos so I paid 16.99 (not including tax and tip) to get a super burrito in order to get rice but did not want sour cream or guacamole, the other additions you get with a super. Cancun has been one of my regular go-to spots for years within easy walking distance of the UC Berkeley campus. I think of Cancun as BayArea-style Mexican food, that can appeal to a very broad audience. If you're looking for something that will bring back sweet memories of Mexico, Cancun isn't it. They use olive oil as their cooking oil, which might be the main difference why their food tastes so different to me. I would have given Cancun a solid 4-stars, but what earned the fifth star for me was a relatively recent addition to the menu: VEGAN AL PASTOR. I *love* meat, and to be honest, I'm always a little underwhelmed by Cancun's meats... but their vegan al pastor is INCREDIBLE. It's not quite exactly like pork al pastor, but that doesn't even matter because it's just so darn good! I usually get it in a Super Burrito. Other highlights: - Exceptional professionalism and care from everyone who works here. I'm glad they survived and I know it's been hard so they've had to raise prices, but never have I ever paid $20 for a small to average sized chicken burrito (or any size actually, even with prawns or fish, which would've been another 2.99 on top of that), and the salsa was extra! Used to be able to choose from several salsas at the salsa bar with no extra cost, plus a huge variety. That's gone. The taste of the burrito was fine but nothing to write home about to justify that price. Sorry to say I won't be going back. read more

Okay so let me start by saying I almost didn't post this review because I've been coming to this spot for years (including through the pandemic) and it was easily my fav Mexican place in Berkeley. But looking at other recent reviews, I think my experience was in line with them and I need to make sure the management read this. The base burrito is $12 and adding shrimp (which is my fav meat) is another $3. But after $15, you just get beans and rice. Like literally you have to spend around $21, to get your burrito in a decent shape. After tips and the works, you end up with a $26 burrito and you don't even get chips and salsa (it's extra couple of dollars). The salsa bar was supposed to be an attraction. And to add to all of this, the limited service they had, no longer exists. You order at the counter, you pick it up and once you're done, you clean up after yourself. I understand pandemic has been tough on businesses and inflation is a thing, but I'm sorry, I can't do a self service $25 burrito that don't even come with chips and salsa. read more

This includes meat, beans, salsa. sour cream was $1.00 per person Guacamole was $2.00 per person Mexican Rice was $1.50 per person (I have never, and I mean, never in my 60+ years of burrito eating, ever heard of anyone charging for RICE. Its probably the cheapest component of the burrito.) Jack Cheese $1.00 per person Chips and Salsa $1.50 per person. For the two of us, JUST burritos, NO special drinks, a modest tip, tax. The tab came to $50.69. For TWO burritos. Nope. Food was not even that special. Really limited salsa bar and we paid for it???? Not going back there. I usually get the Al Pastor street tacos but the burritos here are also great. I used to come here all the time pre pandemic. they've since changed their menu and of course raised prices. I totally get it. I run a small business and I know how hard it is to keep up with rising costs. however, I wanted a very simple veggie burrito with rice- beans and nopales. I ordered a regular burrito because I didn't want sour cream or guacamole. I didn't even want the cheese. what I didn't realize is with the new menu structure, you essentially have to order a super burrito which is $20 if you want RICE in your burrito. that's right- a $15 burrito got me beans and cactus. I should have read more closely but I assumed that a regular burrito would come with rice and beans inside. those are the most basic ingredients. unfortunately they have lost me as a customer. their salsas are delicious but it isn't worth the price if you're just ordering basic items. read more

I heard this place was really good so I wanted to give it a try, but it was a huge disappointment. I got the veggie burrito (~$13) and it only came with beans, veggies, pico and salsa. All their add-ons were kind of pricey (~$2 for rice?!?), so I only added lettuce (an extra $0.50). There was very little pico, salsa, and lettuce, so most of my burrito was beans and veggies, which didn't taste great. Overall this place was extremely disappointing and not worth the price.
