When I clicked "2 Star" the automatic question from Yelp was "Oh no! What could improve?" My answer ... EVERYTHING! Placing the order at the counter prior to sitting at a table was pretty uneventful. But as soon as I sat down and my arms made contact with the sticky table top I began to have concerns. My order, 2 chicken enchiladas rojas, was completely unremarkable in every respect. Flavorless chicken inside of enchilada shells smothered in a pretty bland, tasteless thick brownish sauce. Rice, beans, and a tiny amount of chopped lettuce with a dollop of not very sour sour cream. All for the bargin (not) price of $26.50 including an 18% tip. Customer service was perfunctory at best. I blame myself for eating here without checking review first. A clean table, a gracious smile from the wait staff, or any indication that my business was appreciated would have been sufficient to leave a 3 star review, but alas ... the vibe was completely indifferent to my presence. read more

Amazing food, I ordered only a few things to go, didn't get anything fancy, didn't need too! The classics were spot on and didn't disappoint. Also I don't speak a lot of Spanish and even with a little English everyone was so kind. Just visiting for two days but I've spent both lunches ordering from here. Tacos are tacos but this place was eh... My husband and I have always drove by this place and wanted to to stop and check it out. Kinda wish we didn't. I ordered an horchata thinking it was going to be home made, but it was that powder klass stuff instead that was so disappointing. They also gave us free chips and salsa. The chips were your average chips, but the salsa... was so good and spicy... I got four tacos with three different meats, two chicken, carnitas, and pastor and none of them really shouted muy bien! They were all right nothing special but not terrible either. My husband ordered the super burrito but wanted chorizo which they served but refused to put in a burrito (confused) so he asked for Chile Colorado burrito but not available so he asked for Chile verde burrito finally yes they had it but decided to give it to him in a plate not what he asked for but charged us for it. The Chile verde was eh also nothing special but not terrible although the beans and rice were bland and not very good. We went during the day so it wasn't busy at all food came really quick usually not a good sign, all in all this place didn't really hit especially when we can cook better than what we were served we won't be coming back again. The restaurant itself was cute lots of Mexican decorations and seamed authentic. To bad the food didn't reflect that. read more

The menu is pretty big and has a ton of options. Unfortunately, all of our food was just okay. Nothing had a real kick to it or elevated flavors. "Regular" in this case included pinto beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, and salsa. Additionally, I received complimentary chips and salsa. The chips seemed fresh enough, probably fried earlier in the day. The burrito itself arrived after ~10 minutes. It also tasted rather bland. I was attracted by the exterior Mexican ambience along with its presumed food. To which I was immensely disappointed once I received my reheated wet burrito. I decided to bring two businessmen with hopes of finalizing pertinent paperwork as we'd ate. Due to our paletes being disservice'd by Gallego's cuisine, the business acquisitions fell through. Upon walking it I was instantly mesmerized with all the colors the feeling of being in Mexico. I especially liked all the photographs on the walls and the Piedra Del Sol that is commonly known incorrectly as the Aztec Calendar. The food is delicious, as most people have said. If you come on a weeknight, the place is usually a bit quieter and there's less of a wait. The seafood is fresh and flavorful, and as everyone else has said, the tostadas are soooo good. Now, I'm sensitive to spice so most everything I've had there is a little too spicy for me -- but I don't want you to think it'll be the same for you. I think black pepper is too spicy, so I'm not the best judge. Also, one time I got the banana sushi roll as my meal and it was just super sweet and very weird. Would suggest having that as maybe a dessert instead? I think that's just my poor ordering skills though. Everyone is super friendly! Ok, this is bad Mexican food. Period. Got a super burrito. It was super bad. You have salsa, sour cream, and guacamole to help flavor the under seasoned beef, or gristle, whatever. One of the best Mexican joints in Berkeley - with a trippy Southern Californian feel. This place is like a old-school Mexican place from Pasadena Ca - you walk, bike, or drive in, pull up a chair in a covered area basically IN the parking lot, then settle down for really authentic home-style Mexican food. Usually there are only two people (family members?) working this hole-in-the-wall, but the food makes up for the informal dining atmosphere. This place is a gem - probably the best Mexican food in Berkeley, and one of the only places where you can actually eat outside. It's in an odd spot on San Pablo, wedged between a liquor store and a body shop, which means that you often get serenaded by boom-bap or a barking guard dog, but it's worth it. This place is fresh, fresh, fresh. The tacos are huge, and the al pastor (pork) I usually order is some of the best I've ever had. Quesadillas a grilled to a nice crisp, and with carne asada, are perfect. The service is always friendly, and it seems like the place is truly family run, as I always see the exact same people working there. Be warned though: it's only open for lunch, and not on Sundays. If you're not looking for it, you just might miss it ... despite the bright blue and year round decorations around this joint. Inside only seats 7 small Mexicans, but the covered outside seating (in the back) has room for the entire family. Cash only. We got a carne asade super burrito and a carnitas super burrito. The meat wasn't bad, but minus 2 stars for charging us a super, but leaving out all the fixin's (no guac, sour cream, salsa). Boo. Messed up orders have been happening to me a lot lately, so I'm getting frustrated and less forgiving. The carnitas were tasty - tender and moist (maybe too moist?) and were definitely better than the carne asada which I found to be too fatty and chewy. The lady working there was nice and I'm sure it was just a mistake that they messed up our orders so maybe after they move locations (across the street onto Allston) I'll try again. The chips were good though ... fresh and crunchy. But our take out only came with a tiny container of salsa (which they didn't close properly so it spilled out) ... you should definitely have more at home if you like your chips / burritos with salsa. read more

And $8.99 for two mexi-objects with beans and rice is robbery. For a plate-by-plate analysis: * Taco al Pastor: Tough, overcooked, dripping with red oil, and no onions or cilantro! * Chicken Enchilada: OK, but the chicken and red sauce were extremely mild. * Pork Tamal: Dry, dry, dry! The pork was some kind of long nugget that looked like a old pancreas. And the tamal was hard and grainy -- everything a tamal should not be. * Carnitas Sope: Big wet barrio mess. A sope should be a little fried and a little toasted, but this was mostly like an uncooked masa patty. And the carnitas weren't roasted, so their flavor was undeveloped. * Rice and Refried Beans: Bland. I suppose if you want homecooked Mexican meal and you don't care whether it has any flavor, then be my guest! Otherwise, don't believe the hype, and skip this place. Oakland has some much better parking lots to eat in. read more
