    Omg the tacos are BOMB!!
    Matt C.

As someone who flies a lot, I have a short list of spots that offer exquisite cuisine at ungodly hours and this taqueria is at the top of my list for midnight tacos in Berkeley! I've been coming here for years (RIP to the salsa bar that existed before COVID stole it from us!)--but I remain loyal because of their fresh ingredients, succulent meats and authentic cuisine. This legendary spot is basically like the Abuela I never had who is always down to make me tacos whenever I'm coming back from Oakland airport and find myself driving down university avenue in the middle of the night

I was anxiously waiting on a call and realized I hadn't eaten so I headed into Monte Cristo Taqueria on a whim. The person who took my order was very attentive from the moment I stepped up to the counter to order. I ordered a carne asada burrito with spicy salsa. I was a bit indecisive but the person taking my order gave me a suggestion that worked well for me. The place was clean and the prices actually seem reasonable, which was a breath of fresh air. I got the call while I was waiting and the person who took my order was so kind to bring my order out to me which was completely unexpected. That kindness meant a lot to me during a not so great moment. I picked up a few salsas before I left. I was so pleasantly surprised by the burrito it was very good and full of flavor. The spicy salsa actually added a nice bit of spice. The salsa verde was nice and had a light flavor. The "spicy" salsa was also good. The more mild red salsa wasn't my favorite. I would definitely eat here again and recommend it to others. I might try some of the other items next time.

Absolutely delicious flan. Best I ever had. The taste of sweetened condensed milk and that caramel sauce Besides that I had the chimichanga plate with heaping piles of guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The chips were also really good! They tasted house-made and were thicker than other places. Only critique is that it would have been good to have the salsa in a bowl to dip but they came in sauce bottles instead. I'll definitely be back!

Open late! Order at the counter and they'll bring it to the table. Plenty of vegetarian options and they're clearly marked on the menu. We particularly recommend the enchiladas and the horchata, as well as all of the desserts (mmmm flan!). Not sure what it means that smiles are free on Wednesdays? Don't park in the lot, that's for customers of target and other places on that lot. There's metered street parking on university Ave but if you're here late enough it's free :) Plenty of room for big groups and you might even hear some live music. Restroom in the back.

i've lived so close to here for almost a year, and just now finally got to try it out! i can definitely say i've been missing out! i got a carne asada burrito, and it is huge! it can easily be split into two meals! the only downside is that they do kind of skimp on the meat hahaha the service is great! they prepared my food fast for pickup, and i can also see this as a great place to eat at with family. plenty of seating and a super fun vibe.

This taqueria has been on University for quite a few years, and I've noticed a lot of traffic coming in and out of their parking lot when I strolled by, especially cops for some reason. Well actually, I can see why since they serve old school, straight-ahead Mexican food with no frills. I decided to get a delivery from them for Jamie W. and me. Jamie went for the $10.80 Pollo Asado Burrito which was quite a stuffed monstrosity with adobo-marinated grilled chicken, black beans, and green tomatillo salsa (photo: https://bit.ly/3xsvoN3). Judging from the way he was gorging it, the burrito appeared to hit the spot for him even if it didn't have any veggies to complement the filling. I decided on the $17 Pozole Verde, which featured plenty of chicken and hominy in a tomatillo-infused soup filled with shredded cabbage, onion, oregano, and lime wedges (photo: https://bit.ly/319Itys). It would have been satisfying if it weren't oversalted. Oh well, I can think of worse sins...like a real Monte Cristo sandwich which they don't serve here. Gratefully. I would probably trust what the cops order. FOOD - 3 stars...sturdy and salty Mexican fast food AMBIANCE - n/a...just a delivery this time SERVICE - 3.5 stars...no complaints TOTAL - 3 stars...follow the cops here RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? We had been to Tarocco for lunch and figured we would ask them for a quote, too. My daughter warned me that the owner is trying to be an "influencer" on Instagram and posts photos of herself in crop Tops so I should beware, but that's fine by me. We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. We took our business elsewhere and recommend that you do, too.

It's also one of those places that makes you want to stay. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and generous. Every time I come here, I tell myself I'll pace myself... and every time I fail because it's just that good. The burgers are loaded and perfectly balanced, the fries are always crisp (never soggy, which is rare), and everything tastes high-quality and made to order. You have to try the chicken and waffles. The waffle batter tastes homemade and the butter takes it to another level... it's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after. I'll even DoorDash it all the way to Jingletown. The patio setup is really well done... there's a mix of larger tables for groups and higher bar-style seating for smaller hangs. The wooden furniture and cushioned benches make it comfortable, and they've got heaters for colder days and umbrellas when it's sunny, so you can usually pick your ideal spot. You order at the window and then just hang out while you wait... it's a relaxed flow and the food comes out pretty quickly. The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.
