Not my favorite Dining experience. I'm not a huge sushi fan, however there's been sushi restaurants that HAVE impressed me and that's usually what i hope to expect most restaurants want to achieve with their dishes. To make newcomers become a fan of not only their ethnic cuisine but of THEIR cuisine. Kumo Sushi was not one of them. They get a star for freshness of food (thank god, because getting sick from seafood would be horrible) and the flavor was pretty decent. They also get a point for decoration, thought i thought it was a little too dark. however there were some glaringly huge negatives in our dining experience. -The service was terrible. Despite there being 3 waitresses, they were impossible to flag down and would give a pretty bad attitude when i asked about clarification with their menus. They also never really came back after they dump their dishes in front of you. Granted, at the end of the meal i kinda craved water. -The price is expensive. This wouldn't be a problem since Sushi is on the higher scale of fine cuisine but the portions are TINY. I never seen sushi rolls as pathetically tiny as the ones at Kumo. I came for dinner and left hungry. It's all mostly flare and fancy and less actual eating. -everything outside of their sushi menu is pretty mediocre. Protip: Order their lunch specials, 3 rolls for 12$ and have it take-out. Saves you the horrible service and it truly is a deal for their overpriced tiny rolls. read more

Terrible service! There were 4 waiters by the counter when I went in for picking up order. The waiter grasped the bag, told me the price, checked my signature and never looked at me. Even no one responded or looked at me when I said thank you before I left. I asked for the ell sauce, one pointed to the sign without looking at me again, and asked for $1. I came here with my husband and his friend Mark for dinner one night. The green tea was absolutely amazing, I believe it was roasted green tea and I only had one other cup that great when I went to a sushi place with another friend of mine in the city. I actually had the vegetable teriyaki, it was pretty good. The atmosphere in the restaurant was hopping, you could not eat there without having a good time yourself. There have been a few times that you can tell the quality suffered but overall a great place. Excellent quality of fish and food, mediocre decor, below average service. I come here for the fish and look past the service. On a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest): Food Quality (4) - Fresh fish as evident by texture and taste. Whole grain rice can be purchased as an option. Service (2) - Fast and often times too efficient service. I find the wait staff a bit too aggressive for my liking and often trying to take dishes away to early. On the bright side, food is delivered quickly and tables are turned quickly! Decor (2) - It fees like a dungeon to me.. Poor lighting and dark curtains over the windows really make it unwelcoming. As others have said Kumo Sushi from the appearance outside appears to be closed down or as if it's hiding from something, but I decided to give it a try and was quite pleased with them. Inside is a elegant restaurant that is perfect for a date or get together with friends or even a dinner for business, the atmosphere is lively and inviting. They have a full bar and Saki bar with TV screens perfect for watching games. I had a King Crab and California roll which were absolutely delicious, I am craving more of the King Crab roll as I write this. The prices were reasonable and the service was pretty quick. read more

I wish I'd kept track of everything we ordered. We had two dragon rolls (the first one went too fast). There was a spicy tuna crunchy roll whose name I forgot that was quite good. Then we had another spicy roll that was I think 3rd from the last on the list on the second page of specialty rolls. That one was wonderful. Had some salmon and yellowtail nigiri. I rarely ever write any negative comments about my dining experience but I was compelled to write a review here regarding the service and food. First of, I live in NYC and am only here because i have some business that I have to attend in Melville for the next couple of months. Although we have some great sushi in NYC, by no means is the service great in NYC. However in NYC they are at least respectful and try to accommodate you if you weren't satisfied with your order. So here is the quick lowdown of what happened. My team ordered takeout lunch - a couple of rolls, bento, lunch specials, etc. My team has dined in several times and had no real complaints prior to today. Well this was my first time and all I can say was that I should have ordered a sandwich from the deli instead. They delivered the wrong order to me ( shrimp teriyaki bento box instead of chicken teriyaki) and when i had informed the woman on the phone that this was the wrong order she kept repeating that it was "our fault" and not hers and that we can order the right order for an additional charge. First of, I don't know how one can mistake shrimp for chicken and then continue to be rude and blame us for the mistake. When I finally did open my bento box, the whole entire dish was covered with teriyaki sauce, including the sushi rolls and shumai that came with it. The whole bento was just poorly put together and the sauce was everywhere. The flavor was eh, nothing specials, maybe because everything was covered in teriyaki sauce. Dealing with the woman on the phone was the worst experience. My team members vowed never to revisit this place again because of the rude service provided to us today. read more

Had lunch here today and enjoyed the food. It is a pretty standard sushi place, though the sushi has less rice and more fish and/or vegetables. The ambiance is fine, a bit dark. The service is fine as well, not noteworthy, but not bad. The menu contains many helpful pictures (and many typos..."Vocano Roll," "Yellowtial"). The one oddity is the business hours that are posted on Yelp and by the door of the restaurant. Both Yelp and the sign by the door indicate that the restaurant opens at 2 p.m. on Sundays, but we arrived at 1:15 p.m. Since there was a lit up "Open" sign, we went inside to see if they were open, and they were. After reading some reviews about the sushi here, I decided to place an order to pick-up on my way home from work the other day. The pint of shrimp dumpling soup was tasty, not overly salty and didnt cheapen out on the dumplings in the soup. While my spicy tuna rolls were fresh, they were just a little over pureed/mushy and watery for my liking. For soup and 2 rolls (they charged me for a side of extra ginger) it was a little pricey than some other places I've ordered the same thing at ($19). I'll keep this place on my list but I'll definitely be searching around for something better. read more

I wish I could give it more stars and a year ago I would have giving it 5 stars. But the portions have gotten much smaller! The salad was just lettuce and 3 strings of red cabbage. I didn't take that into account because I ordered from there for sushi and sashimi not salad. We used to order a minimum of 3 times a week and it seems like the prices went up the portions got smaller and the quality wasn't consistent enough. If u don't mind the smell of fish you should have no problem when you walk in here. We were seated immediately & within 30 seconds were asked by 3 people if we were ready to order. We ordered the 2 & /or 3 roll sushi lunch which comes with miso soup & salad. That was served very quickly. While eating the soup,waitress came by 3 times to see if we were done. Talk about feeling rushed. There were plenty of empty tables & no one was waiting by the door. So while eating our sushi the waitresses came by at least 6-7 times to see if we were done. So rushed. Listen, its not Kotobuki but it is the best place you can go to in Plainview. It is the only place around with Futo Maki (fat vegetable rolls) and it is very good. The rainbow rolls are great. If you want to get something a little heavy that will blow you away try the the Tuna Pizza. They have a lot of really great appetizers also, though they tend to be on the smaller size. If you go with a larger sized party they have a nice private table in the back that we enjoy. read more

I do not care how good the food is! I will not be treated with rudeness! The waitress pulled the menu right out of my hands while I was trying to explain two other meals we would of liked to have tried. We started off with miso soup and all of a sudden the salad and meal was brought out all at the same time. I needed more then one napkin and had to take an extra one next to me. Not sure if this was a chain place as the name is common. Nice decor, posh clientele. Menu was nice with gleaming photos. Price on the high side. One roll was $19 with king crab meat. Ramen was $15. Ingredients was so so and came in a huge basin of soup which I did enjoy. However, the kitchen prepared the meat Chinese style and was soy saucy. The wait staff was very inattentive. We had to request small plates to eat our sushi??? Like mentioned, we had a huge soup, they never offered to bring us a small bowl to share. And never filled our tea. The tea was unimpressive for a Japanese restaurant. I am Chinese American and I am perfectly fluent in written Chinese as well, but Chinese owned and operated sushi place never impressed me. I know it's hard to find authentic japanese food in long island, but really, the lackadaisical attitude of the wait staff will run this place down if they don't bring it up. read more

Five stars or not five stars? That is the question. As you can see, I answered that question with, well, five stars. But that doesn't mean Kumo actually deserves five stars. Let me explain my crypticness: Kumo is my favorite restaurant. Its sushi is the best I've ever eaten, the place is clean (you want that in any restaurant, but with raw fish it's especially important) and attractive. Kumo does not look like much from the outside. It's set in the Fairway shopping plaza in Plainview, right by the Cheeburger Cheeburger. Inside, though, it's a lovely combination of dim lighting with dark wood, a pleasant raw bar, deep booths and two and four seaters that can be combined. Kumo is small, and the wait for dinner during the later part of the week and weekends is extensive. If you go, I recommend the shumei (spelling?) appetetzier; those dumplings are delightful. I also recommend the spicy maki combo with a side of spicy mayo. I've tried most of their sushi dinners, but that one is by far my favorite. Entrees are served with either a salad in ginger dressing or miso soup; both are tasty. Lunch is an especially good deal, at least for me, because you can choose two or three rolls (for a slightly altered spicy maki combo!) that come along with the soup AND salad, for $12 or $13 (depending on the number of rolls you actually order). That's down from the $16 spicy maki dinner, and you get both the soup and salad. The other lunch entrees look similarly enticing price-wise. Back to my cryptic remarks from earlier: You know my bias, I think Kumo's sushi is the best I've ever tasted, I like the restaurant itself, and, despite what I'm about to write, I like the people working there (they are always very friendly). That said, service is at best average and at worst poor (worst is usually to be had when they are moderately to very busy). The servers at Kumo are over-attentive; almost the moment you finish that last bite of sushi, your plate is whisked away from a server who may or may not be yours. There are no commas between soup, salad, appetizer at Kumo. Expect soupsaladappetizer as a mishmosh served all at once. I've ordered appetizers that were never brought, or were finally brought along with my meal. I've watched as my spicy maki combo languished on the sushi bar while others' non-sushi dishes were cooked in the kitchen. Everything is fast-paced at Kumo. I often don't know who my server is, because someone different brings every part of the meal, including the check. Other things that are spotty at Kumo can be very easily remedied, and should be. Sometimes when you go you are offered a hot hand towel when you sit. Sometimes at the end of the meal complimentary watermelon is brought over for your party. Sometimes. I eat or take out at and from Kumo between 3-4 times a month. I gave it five stars, yes, because I do love it there, but I hope that my review was honest enough that, if you go there (and you should! I love it!), you have an idea of what to expect. read more

They have 3 pages of salads and not one of the items could be made gluten free with salad dressing. I was told only the garden salad with no dressing is gluten free. I asked myself, why are the blinds all down giving the impression that the restaurant is closed. I was not able to see a thing through the beige/white blinds. The only thing signifying that it was open was a neon light on the window saying "Open". As soon as we entered, I took notice of the Chic design with dark wood tables, high ceilings, and a marble/tile bar which all gave the restaurant a very modern and hip ambiance. The place was pretty busy (about 3/4 packed) around 12:30 pm, with about 15-20 tables made of dark furnished wood. Separating the tables were ~4 foot high Japanese Shoji screens. Near the back was a semi-private room (with a bead curtain), fitting about 10-15 diners for groups/parties. The modern marble/tile sushi bar fit another 5-8 customers so that they can be entertained watching the sushi chefs create such fine delicacies. There is also a full bar serving alcohol. The bathrooms were very modern with stone/marble floors and walls, and smelled of sweet lavender/vanilla. It was easily large enough to fit a wheelchair for the handicapped. The circular drop down sink bowl felt like something you would expect out of a Kohl commercial, along with a modern stainless steel faucet. Service was impeccable. There seemed to be about 8-10 waiters and waitresses serving the tables. There was always a waiter no more than 5 ft. away to cater to any of our needs. Our green tea and glasses of water were refilled before it ever hit the half-empty point. A waitress came to our table only seconds after we sat to give the polite inquiry if we were in a rush for lunch (since we were in our work clothes) or if we would be having a semi-leisurely meal. She just as easily and politely stepped away and kept an eye on us to see when we were ready to order. I've heard that the Chicken Teriyaki was very delicious, which I also recommended to my other 2 colleagues. We all decided to order the Chicken Teriyaki Bento box which was served with Miso Soup, Japanese Salad, California Roll & Shumai for $11. We had asked if we could substitute the California Roll for another roll and the waitress gladly said yes, but it would be an additional charge of $1. We all thought that was a minor charge in order to get a raw seafood roll instead. I decided to substitue my California Roll for a Spicy Salmon roll. The Miso soups came out in about 5 minutes after we had ordered. The Miso Soup was your standard fare tasting soup with Miso broth, tofu, and seaweed. One disappointment was that my coworker had a piece of a plastic wrapper in his soup (a wrapper that you would find on a pack of Orbit/Five/Stride bubblegum). The waitress apologized and took the soup to the kitchen to get another one. My colleagues were a bit disappointed. In another 7-9 minutes, our Bento boxes came out. The Chicken Teriyaki portions were huge, far more than any I had encountered at any other restaurant. The chicken was juicy and tender, and sauce was just right, not too salty and not too bland, with just the right consistency. Below the chicken was stir-fried onions which slightly had the onion taste and could have used a little salt to taste. Also served was rice, and 3-4 Shrimp Shumai which were very tasty. The Spicy Salmon was well-prepared and very fresh. The salad with Japanese dressing was your standar fare salad, but the dressing felt slightly thinner in consistency and a little less tangy (this may be preferred by some as the dressing can sometimes be too strong). In all, the meal was very delicious, portions were substantial, ambiance was very pleasing to the eyes, and service was very good. My only disappointment was my colleague finding a small piece of plastic in his Miso Soup. For that, I will give Kumo Sushi 4 stars. If it weren't for that, I would gladly give it 5 stars. One side note, they were also serving the Chicken Teriyaki on a hot skillet, which I believe was the Kitchen Lunch portion. Everyone knows about the American Dream, the rags to riches story that many new immigrants endeavor to accomplish. However, too many new Japanese restaurant owners attempt to catch the dream, using the same route. Kumo Sushi is yet again another cookie cutter Japanese restaurant in Nassau County that is undoubtedly the dream of some Chinese chef turned restaurateur, who wants to duplicate Manhattan on Long Island and profit from the area's long love affair with Japanese cuisine. Although it has copied many dishes from restaurants in the city, it also has a few notably original items on its menu. Kumo Sushi's design is full of contrasts. As one approaches the restaurant from the parking lot, its facade is spartanly white except for a garishly flashing neon "open" sign. It seems like the face of a seedy strip club. Why not goad passersby to come in by showing off a clearly busy restaurant through the large windows? The restaurant's interior, however, totally contrasts with its exterior, surprising the customer with a lofty, yet cozy dining room. The room features rich, floor-to-ceiling dark wood paneling along with a grid of blue ceramic tiles behind the steel and granite sushi bar. Nevertheless, the interior design goes awry when incongruous elements, such as neon lights and a cheesy, oversized tuna is suspended behind the sushi bar. The addition of such aspects detracts from the attempted portrayal of a Japanese minimalist aesthetic. Furthermore, the sushi bar was unattractively dustier than grandpa's living room. The dining room's ability to absorb ambient noise is almost nonexistent also. Even though the restaurant doesn't play any music, diners still have to shout at each other to carry on a conversation, which makes the dining experience unpleasant. Nothing is more annoying than having one's conversation interrupted by the cries of a child or the obnoxious cackles of Carrie Bradshaw wannabes. Kumo Sushi's service is full of contrasts as well. The hosts are professional and hospitable, greeting and seating customers effectively with style. The servers, on the other hand, are just short of being stock exchange traders; they minimally speak to their customers and, like in many Japanese restaurants, desire to turn as quickly as possible to make tips. Although attentive, service is impersonal and rushed. Moreover, the sushi chefs exhibited a range of enthusiasm and emotions. One of them appeared as if his girlfriend had just left him and made nigiri that wanted to cry while another tried to honor all the stereotypes of the fastidious Japanese chef, like Morimoto, for instance. Kumo Sushi's fish and shellfish selection is fresh and comprehensive, including bonito, giant clam, kanpachi, and live scallop, and its sushi rice is balanced, but at times undercooked. Even though the restaurant has lifted various appetizers, such as "Black Cod Miso," "Rock Shrimp Tempura," "Tuna Pizza," and "Yellowtail Jalapeño," from well-known restaurants, it also has devised some interesting appetizers and rolls. Its "Kumamoto Oyster Tataki" is effectively prepared; its finely chopped scallions, grated spicy daikon, and acidy ponzu enhance the sweetness and fleshiness of the oysters. The chefs experiment with the "New Style Sashimi" appetizer, putting a twist on the traditional usuzukuri by pairing fluke with yuzu and spicy olive oil. Although one anticipates the bursting punch of citrus that the dish promises, but its combination with oil just doesn't impress the palate and the overall dish is bland. Another attempt at experimentation results in the "Pizza Sandwich" appetizer, an amalgamation of spicy tuna, crab, lobster salad, tamago, and avocado in a hors d'oeuvre-sized sandwich, which, unfortunately, solely tastes like a creamy mess of spicy mayo and avocado. One could remove all the fish and the dish would taste the same. The restaurant's creative rolls, however, are often appealing and successful. A nameless special roll, a chopped toro and scallion roll topped with a mixture of sweet shrimp, wasabi tobiko, and mayo, brings all its ingredients together well. One would expect that such a roll with myriad ingredients would detract from the flavors of the fish, but each constituent complemented each other and brought out the essence of the fish. Unfortunately, Kumo Sushi offers a limited wine and sake selection that is not well thought-out and interesting. It also has a cocktail list, most of which are garnished Kool-aid with a splash of alcohol. Thankfully, the restaurant is not pretentious; it understands that it is a neighborhood restaurant with a few good things to offer. read more

Ever felt like you were unwanted or being watched awkwardly? Well I have at Kumo! They try to take your food as soon as you take your last bite, not bothering to wait for everyone to finish or gasp for air. They stood almost on top of us the whole meal which just felt as if we were being rushed, and there were 2 tables taken in the whole place, not the busiest of times. Also, we had asked for 2 sodas, no ice, and she brought them with ice, hence we corrected her. She said well next time tell me before, and we said we did! Listening skills or maybe a far fetched language barrier? But still won't go back due to the unrelaxed meal and feeling of being unwanted. read more

Me and a friend recently visited this place, and the place was most certainly NOT crowded. There was only one other table aside from ours that was taken. The service was terrible, and let me tell you why. When we sat down, they offered us a complimentary hand towel. We maybe picked it up for one second and then then snatched it from us. They were quite rude and irritable about our drinks, and when we asked what they had, we were met with a sigh. I'm no waitress but I should think you'd be a lot more welcoming and willing to help a customer. Now, we move on to food. I asked a waitress about the beef sukiyaki and was met with another sigh, and a rude explanation of what their version of it was. So I decided to order steak teriyaki(I think, I hated the place so I don't really care what it was). It was okay... The sauce lacked in flavour, the rice was undercooked. As we ate, as noticed in another review, they circled our table like vultures and stared at us. Now, we move on to when we went to pay. They were rather rude and disgusting as we asked for the bill. We kept track of what we bought and they overcharged us. As we paid, the waitress was rude, and the people at the computer thing were pointing at us and talking about us, and when we paid, we were shocked that when my friend said something to the lady, she gave him a rude look and snatched up our money. I can assure you, I will NEVER return to this place. And there are definitely better places with better service. read more
