Went here for lunch a few weeks ago with some out of town co-workers. I had eaten here a few times before. It's a nice room and decor. To me it's average sushi for a high end looking place. On this day, we walked in and the place smelled like fish. Really in your face. I've always heard that if the fish smells like fish, it's not fresh. We discussed leaving but didn't. I've dined at Kumo at least 10-12 times either with my girlfriend or friends and have yet to have a bad meal or any bad service. I'm not sure where the other reviewers are coming from as far as poor service, it's always been prompt without the feeling of being rushed. As far as their sushi's concerned it's always been fresh and well done with some standouts along the way. They have a stellar selection of well thought out and executed rolls and some really nice sashimi specials as well. The sushi/sashimi is definitely a few notches above standard grade fare and again has always been fresh for me. A good tip if you want to sit down fast on a busy night is to ask for the sushi bar which is well laid out and very roomy unlike most that I have come across. Came to Kumo today for lunch with a coworker. I haven't been to this sushi restaurant in awhile and now I remember why. Sushi is ok, nothing to write home about. I ordered the maki lunch special. First the good. It comes with miso soup and a salad. The miso soup is some of the best I've ever had, the salad is a standard Japanese restaurant salad. I ordered 3 rolls as part of the special. A shrimp tempura, a Boston and a spicy shrimp. The spicy shrimp was basically the same as the Boston with a drizzle of spicy mayo. Not what I would call spicy shrimp. Still everything was pretty tasty. Hostess is polite and sat us quickly. Wait staff on the other hand seemed to rush us to order. This might not have been so bad if when we did order the waitress spoke English clearly. It was difficult to order let alone ask questions about their menu. Maybe I'm spoiled by Kotobuki, but I'm not sure I'll be going back. I might order some takeout miso soup though. Seriously I freaking love that soup. read more

Found this place in the Top 100 Long Island restaurant book. A gem, the location and outside are decieveing but it is actually very, very good. We ordered shumai and edamame to start, both were good. Then our waitress brought out a complimentary two little pastry cups filled with spicy tuna mixed with apple. For dinner we ordered sushi ala carte, and 3 rolls everything with brown rice. We got white tuna, salmon, yellow tail, and blue fin toro. We ordered striped bass but they were out so we got blue fin toro instead and it was amazing. The rolls we got were rainbow, rainbow naruto, and the woodbury roll. The rainbow roll was especially good. Everything was very fresh and melted in your mouth. It was all delicious. Service was decent, but the food made up for it. Overall it was a very good find, we will be back. read more

I ordered food and they told me 10 minutes, when I showed up they said it was not ready yet and they asked me to sit outside and they would bring my food to me. Well, 20 minutes later they never came outside and forgot about me. Not only was that not professional but they really did not care that I was sitting outside. So there are plenty of sushi places to go within the area and I won't be going to Kumo anymore. It just so happens on this night i ordered food from another restaurant and because they were so late my other food was cold and that just made it even worse. Honestly I have been coming here for years. I ordered a shrimp tempura. I'm thinking it's a small little shrimp dipped in tempura batter. It was something long with tempura coating. Not what I pictured. I literally took a bite out of it and called the manager, Luis or this, over to just show him like I did not like it. So rudely, he responds, "well you HAVE to pay for it. Want something else?" .. honestly I would have paid for the dish. I hate to waste something that they took the time to make but he could have been more polite. The sushi, appetizers, and salads are top notch. The Fantasy Roll is one of the best rolls I've ever had in my life. And I've eaten a lot of sushi. At other sushi bars, there are times when the sushi isn't 100% fresh. You can tell by the smell, taste, and texture. HOWEVER, at Kumo, I've never eaten something that wasn't fresh. Whenever my boyfriend and I are craving japanese, we hit up Kumo. Unfortunately, unless you're ordering take out, don't even waste your time at this place. The service is horrendous. I went there twice, and everyone was rude, from the host down to the bussers. Two waitresses were serving my girlfriend and me, and they kept taking our plates away before we were finished. One of them even had the audacity to reach onto our table and move my friend's salad plate closer to her (as to signify that we were wasting her time, and we should eat faster.) I've never ever seen someone do that before. I guess they don't value their customers. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we're not wealthy-looking, or that we're women? Time and time again, my office orders from Kumo because they love the rolls and the food. But after picking up another take out order yesterday and AGAIN being rudely treated and ignored as I paid my $95 bill, I figured a review was appropriate. Yes the food is good, usually fresh and prompt on pickup with very few mistakes made in the order. But the downside of the lack of personality and almost arrogance that comes from the staff is off putting! And to top it off, they have now raised their prices on upgrades. If you order a Bento box and choose an upgrade on the california roll (which is BS Filler roll anyway) to say a Spicy Salmon roll, the charge was $1.00. Reasonable. Now, it's $2.00 for the upgrade. If you order a maki lunch of 2 or 3 rolls, to upgrade to Brown Rice, the charge was $1.00. But now? Wait for it...waitttt...the new charge is $1.00 PER ROLL! So you're telling me, Kumo, that brown rice which is available in just about every Sushi bar worth its salt, is a luxury item that with a 3 roll lunch should now cost $3 more? Insane! My 3 roll maki lunch went from $13 to $16 yesterday. And there's no way anyone should be paying that much for a take out lunch during the week. Kumo, congratulations. You are officially crazy! And I will no longer frequent your place. Not that you gave a rats ass when I actually did. read more

LET ME EXPLAIN The food was fantastic, it was fresh, tasty and delicious however the service was god awful. They were rude, we never were served our miso soups and when we asked they looked annoyed and gave us luke warm soup along side our main dish. They rushed us from when we first sat down (and we ordered drinks and lot of food so we were a good table to tend) to when we finally had enough and left. No one was even waiting to be seated so there was absolutely no reason for such bad rushed service. My husband and I came here with another couple to catch up and have a good dinner but we could not even make conversation because we were to busy telling the waitresses to shooo shoo away from our table. The waitress was circling our table like a vulcher and I had to tell 3 different people to leave the plates alone MULTIPLE times! They would try and take our plates away when there was STILL SUSHI on it and it had been a total of 5minutes from when they put the plates down. While I still stick by my original post about the food being very good from Kumo, I do have to chime in about their service. The last time I ate there, my bf and I were rushed so much. The waitress kept trying to take our plates before we were done, and we weren't eating slow. We decided we wanted to get a dessert and the waitress brought the check without asking if we wanted to dessert. When we said we wanted dessert, she was visibly annoyed. The service is consistently like this. I would frequent this place more if the service was better. I go here infrequently because the service sucks and I don't want to be rushed through my meal especially when you are paying the money that Kumo charges. read more

What a disappointment. I had such high hopes for this place, given all the hype surrounding it. When my favorite sushi companion and I walked into the joint, it was hopping. It was also a Friday night, during Lent - and you know how the Catholic guilt has you avoid meat on Fridays during this time. Anyway - my boy noted that it was packed, and that this was a good sign that we were in for a delicious sushi dinner. Not so much, it would turn out. The place can seat a lot, and given how packed it was we were seated quickly but the tables are practically on top of one another and I don't necessarily like that. A girl needs a little elbow room. Happened to opt for a drink tonight, and got a bonsai (plum wine plus saki), which was tasty. However, the rolls were a serious let-down. We ordered the Black Pepper Tuna Roll, the Avocado Roll, the Manetto Hill Roll (a special roll with seared salmon and raw salmon) and another special roll with tuna wrapped in cucumber (don't remember the name). Compared to other sushi places, their special rolls were small. For a $12 dollar roll, I expected a bit more. The salmon roll was covered in scallions which wasn't listed on the roll description (I HATE scallions), but I managed to scrape enough off of two to try it. Just meh. The black pepper tuna roll...where's the pepper? The kick? The spice? Nowhere to be found. Thank God for wasabi. The tuna mush with cucumber was nothing special, and the avocado roll was your typical avocado roll. I saw comments talking about the bad service, which I disagree with. Service was good, albeit a little slow, waited around for a bit for the waitress to ask if we wanted anything else/to see how our meal was. But we weren't rushed out at all, and on a Friday night, I like to take my time to enjoy my food and the company I am with. The only reason I am not giving this place one star is because they give you watermelon and Japanese gum at the end. Service was friendly and we were seated quickly, and my drink was good. But honestly, I don't think I'd come back here. My date and I left underwhelmed and still in need of a sushi fix. Oh well. read more

Update: We came here a second time and the service was really rude and unfriendly. Reduced my rating from 4 to 3 because it has so far been consistently unwelcoming. They rushed us to order, coming over several times when we were clearly still reading the menu. It was 830 when we sat and they close at 10. We found out soon after ordering that it was because she wanted to sit down and eat. That's fine but when we were looking for her wanting to get some water she was nowhere to be found. And after we saw our tuna pizza sandwich appetizer sitting at the sushi bar for 8 minutes we had to call over another waitress. Customer service is severely lacking to say the LEAST. Otherwise, really great sushi. The uni was delicious - very fresh and melts in your mouth. The xo scallops my boyfriend got were also delicious, well cooked, and fresh tasting. The red tobiko was yummy. The toro tartar was surprisingly not flavorful enough for me but still a good combo with the ponzu. I will definitely get the pizza sandwich again it's amazing!! This place was good... Recently discovered it and it's great that it's right by work. Kind of unassuming front but the interior is nice and modern. I've been there twice so far. Once for dinner (3 couples) once for a business lunch. The fish is some of the best on Long Island. The staff could use some English lessons (shocking I know). When we were there the 1st time, the girl who served us had such a thick accent I honestly couldn't understand a word she said. Regardless, the food is superb, and the price is pretty reasonable. The lunch menu is excellent, and very reasonable. I left well fed for $15. Hell... The vendor was paying, and I wasn't looking to save him any money... But you'd really have to drink to run a lunch bill up. Food: even though the fish served was very fresh, the amount of mango and other relatively sour tasting ingredients (i.e. Mango) that were placed in some of the items we ordered really made the restaurant lose Japanese food authenticity. They also seem to like cheese a lot, which is rarely placed into Sushi, or at least I rarely see cheeses in sushi while I'm in Asia... Service: Great! Very friendly staff. Eggplant Sandwich: Served like a special roll with fried eggplant, spicy tuna, lobster and salmon (YUM!, but definitely enough to share as an appetizer or to eat alone.) Now I'm stuffed because I also got the spicy crunchy tuna roll w/ avocado (i used to live in california, I love avocado and can't ever resist.) I tried some salad, next time I would get the ginger dressing on the side. My dad had the huge portion of udon soup which was smokey flavored and very tasty. This place has excellent quality and variety of fish as well as highly skilled chefs. It's the most clean cut sushi restaurant that I've encountered on my one week tour of long island sushi restaurants. I've heard different things about the service quality but my experience was a pleasant one. I like this place but I don't think they like my coworkers and I when we stop by for lunch and are loud and rude. Good food. None of us had sushi but the chicken teriyaki was pretty damn good and sizzling once it got to our table. After a long absence, I finally made my return to Kumo... still crowded, and a longgggg wait, but definitely worth it. My (then) girlfriend wanted to take me somewhere special... so I thought up this place and was extremely excited when she agreed. It was her first time, and she was very impressed. We ordered a few rolls to start off with. We got the hand rolls which were a bad idea b/c its almost impossible to share (hard to cut). but they tasted good. For dinner I got the bento box -Sushi (real deal sushi- dead fish and rice) and Chicken Mahki and she ordered Rainbow rolls and a dragon roll. She decided to pay... so def. no complaints! read more
