Butter Chicken Promo Banner on Company Vehicle
    Vittor B.

A co-worker recently asked if I'd heard about Krsma Restaurant on Victoria Drive, knowing how fond I am of Indian cuisine. Since I rarely venture out to East Vancouver -- being comfortably based in the downtown core -- this piqued my curiosity. Out of sheer impulse, we decided to check it out that very afternoon. My friend made a reservation for two, though, as we found out later, it really wasn't necessary. Krsma is located on the west side of Victoria Drive at 36th Avenue, nestled among a variety of eateries offering diverse flavours. Not sure about guest parking availability (and probably none), my friend simply parked on a nearby side street. We arrived on time, and the dining room was quiet -- no more than five customers at two tables -- with just one waitress on duty. Normally, a well-trained server could handle that, but it quickly became clear that professionalism wasn't her strength. Despite many empty tables, we were placed at a tiny corner table, hardly suitable for two adults. This isn't a fine dining establishment with rigid section assignments -- there was no reason not to seat us more comfortably. We mentioned it was our first visit, but the waitress didn't seem to care. She left us with the food and drink menus, expressionless. Their Butter Chicken is proudly advertised on the back of their company vehicle, so my friend went with that. I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala. The waitress asked if we wanted rice or naan, and we requested two servings of rice and one garlic naan. The food took more than 30 minutes to arrive -- a bit long, but understandable due to a couple of takeout orders. During the wait, we witnessed a customer complaining to the manager. To his credit, the manager handled it well -- bringing over some mukhwas (digestive seeds) and promising to waive an item on the bill. That showed a good level of customer service on his part. When the food finally arrived, our small 20" x 20" table was overflowing: two dinner plates, two water glasses, cutlery on paper napkins, two bowls of chicken, two bowls of rice, and the naan basket -- no elbow room whatsoever. I'm 6' tall with broad shoulders, and I had to sit angled the whole time due to the lack of legroom. My friend, who doesn't eat Indian food often, asked the waitress which dish was which. Her response? She pointed and said, "Butter Chicken always has cream in it." The tone implied, "How dumb, do you not know that?" I caught my friend rolling his eyes. **The food itself?** Flavourful and authentic. Both dishes were medium spicy, and overall well-prepared. The basmati rice was plain -- nothing special. In hindsight, I should've chosen a flavoured option like coconut or saffron rice. The Butter Chicken sauce was a bit runny; my Tikka Masala had a thicker, richer sauce. The garlic naan was tasty but disappointingly small, especially for $4.95 a piece. A single bowl of plain rice also felt overpriced. While chicken entrees were on the pricier side, I get it -- that's just the cost of dining out these days. **A small anecdote:** My friend noticed a sticker offering "Free Dessert" via QR code. He asked the waitress, who said we had to scan it and leave a review to get a Gulab Jamun on our NEXT visit. We just smiled. A party of four had just arrived, and the adjacent table hadn't been cleaned. The manager once again stepped in to help while the waitress was off somewhere. One customer asked about the jars of spices on display and whether they were actually used in the kitchen. The manager answered honestly -- "No, they're just for decoration." (At least he's honest -- I chuckled.) **Final Thoughts:** Our first visit was underwhelming. The food was decent, but the service left much to be desired. Seating was cramped, prices were high for that side of town, and even with a reservation on a quiet weekday afternoon, we weren't made to feel welcome. A complimentary dessert for first-time guests would've made a lasting impression -- how much could a piece of Gulab Jamun really cost? Contrast that with a well-known Western chain that offers a free ice cream pie (12$ value) and even sings "Happy Birthday" -- no ID needed and now that's customer experience. By the way, three larger tables were still empty when we left -- so the choice of cramped setup felt unnecessary. As always, I paid cash to help the business save on card fees and left a decent tip. But for me, this was a one-and-done experience. **Final Rating:** * **Food:** (3.5/5) * **Service:** (2/5)

Looks like Old Hanoi Quarter has now been replaced by this Indian restaurant. I assume the name is pronounced "Charisma". Parking is available on Victoria, as well as the side streets. The inside looks a bit like a tropical hut. Not sure if authentic, but oh well. Bollywood style custom posters on the wall. Staff are friendly. I think it's a mom and pop, as well as a chef. Pricing is reasonable. Garlic butter naan - can't go wrong. Tastes exactly as it sounds. Lacha parantha - buttered flatbread. Nice and greasy. Beautiful. Chicken 65 - nowhere near as spicy as I was expecting, compared to other places. This one is more sweet. Something to keep in mind. Samosas - 3 per serving. Decent filling. The order was undercooked (frozen in the middle), but I ate them anyways. Buddy and I mentioned to the owner, and he gave us a discount, which was nice of him. Hopefully they cook them longer next time. Otherwise, no problems with the dish. Lamb bhuna - tasty. Decent amount of meat. Butter chicken - also tasty. Nice amount of heat when we asked for "hot". The entree portions are reasonable sized (some places use snack sized pots). While paying our bill, the owner also gave out some fennel seeds and rock sugar as a dessert, served in 2 large bowls. Pretty nice and refreshing after the meal. Definitely a good choice if one is in the area. Recommended.

Tried out this place today with my parents. We came in late Friday and just missed their lunch specials (darn!) so we only opted for a few things. We ordered the samosa chaat, eggplant and potatoes curry and garlic naan. The samosa chaat was comparable to other restaurants but let me tell you their garlic naan was so good! Fresh, hot and flavourful. Their curry was also very good! Wish it was a little bit saucier but the eggplants were great! Decor wise - I really liked the painting on their wall. The area looked clean and organized and I just wish the tables were a bit bigger. The server came by to check in with us on the food a couple times and he was very polite and I thought it was very nice of him to do so. Even though we had an issue with our bill (PST was charged incorrectly for some reason), he addressed the issue straight away and thanked us for identifying it. We are glad to have discovered this Indo Chinese place in the neighborhood!

    Gobhi Aloo (vegan)

Very solid Indian food with a clearly labeled vegan subsection of the menu. I did an online takeout order of 3 dishes plus breads, and it was ready in about 15-20 minutes. We got: -Gobhi Aloo -- very solid version of the dish, with soft, creamy potatoes and well-cooked cauliflower that still has some texture. -Vegetable Jalfrezi -- full of different veggies, cooked with a spicy, tangy, tomatoey masala sauce. Excellent. -Chana Masala -- similar to the jalfrezi but with chickpeas and plenty of tomato/masala sauce; it was even a touch on the smoky side, which was nice. You select the spiciness level for each dish. We did the Gobhi Aloo medium and the other two hot. Don't order hot unless you can handle it -- they definitely deliver on the spice, which we appreciated! Each dish was $14.95 plus tax and substantially portioned. On several days during the week, they also have buy-one-get-one deals on select dishes -- not sure how long that'll last, but that's a nice deal. The man who greeted me on arrival for pick-up was extremely friendly and professional. Good spot. Recommended.

[2024-April-05 Update] Their Monday -Thursday 15% discount is no longer. Still, the food is well worth the money.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.

From the gold railings to coat check to a piano on the stairs to an old school oyster bar showcasing their wares proudly on display, Joe Fortes has a lot going on for it. But perhaps more so than anything else is an amazing happy hour for anyone who loves oysters. Service Before diving into the food let's talk about service. The servers here are dressed in the old full whites with black ties and give you full service. They have an expert knowledge of the menu and are willing to give you any and all opinions if asked. They check on you frequently and make sure you're having a good time with enough banter to make it friendly and welcomed. Happy Hour - Alcohol With that out of the way, we can talk about the happy hour. Yes, they have a great deal when it comes to their house red and white wines where you can get 6 oz for $6 CAD or 9 oz for $9 CAD. Their beers range from $5 CAD to $8 CAD and their cocktails are all under $10 CAD. Happy Hour - Food They have some incredible truffle fries, cut thick and sprinkled with parmesan as delicate as snow for $9 CAD. Their crab & corn fritters are slightly chewy but packed with flavor and come at $12 CAD. The coconut prawns sound just as delicious as they taste and come at $13 CAD. I would avoid the Steelhead ceviche though as it was more mashed avocado than ceviche. However, HOWEVER, the star of the show are their oysters. Coming at $1.75 an oyster, you get to be as gluttonous as you'd like whilst keeping your pockets happy. Vancouver is known for their amazing seafood and with this happy hour from 3 PM - 5 PM it gives you 2 hours to fill your belly with as many oysters as you can. Even if you ordered 50 oysters you would be under $90 CAD. I should know, I did that. Last Thoughts Even without the incredible happy hour Joe Fortes would be a restaurant you have to visit during your trip to Vancouver. With a great selection of food on their menu, wait staff that feel old world and professional, and a setting fit for the city, the happy hour is just the bonus that makes visiting Joe Fortes even more enticing. Come with an appetite, leave with a smile.

And while there are no shortage of seafood restaurants serving fresh crab on the Steveston waterfront, we wanted to give The Crab King a fair shake. I'm so glad that we did! My wife ordered a King Crab for herself which, after tearing it literally limb-from-limb, eventually declared it to be tied for her favorite boiled crab dish anywhere! High praise coming from such a consummate crustacean connoisseur! For myself and our son, an order of fish and chips, and the grilled chicken sandwich rounded out our order, both of which were crispy, tasty and delicious. Regarding the fish and chips, they appeared to be tempura-battered, and I'm still not 100% sure what type of fish it was. It may have been cod, but it seemed more like catfish, but either way, it was tender, juicy, flaky and delicious. No complaints here! More than anything, though, the employees here went out of their way to make our experience enjoyable. Our toddler son, who is normally extremely well-behaved in restaurants, was having a bit of a fuss here and there. Without prompting, the servers brought us a little radio to play music for him, as well as a couple of toys to play with, one of them being a wind-up truck that they gave to him to take home! He loved it there, and still plays with it at home! They even played peek-a-boo with him from behind the counter, soliciting laughs and giggles, for the better part of 15 minutes! That sort of customer service is nearly impossible to find, and should be praised and cherished wherever it is found! Whatever the past may have held for this restaurant, the Crab King is an entirely new animal now, serving up fresh seafood by uncommonly wonderful employees, in a fantastic floating location. They even offer to cook spot prawns and other seafood purchased from the boats docked at the nearby waterfront marketplace, for a modest fee. With all these things going for it, there's no doubt who wears the crown of Crab King in Steveston Harbor!

Everything tasted fresh and ocean-sweet but the lobster rolls buns were getting wet and soggy from the plate to ice condensation - an oversight on presentation logistics.
