I've been meaning to try this place for awhile and finally got my chance as i had a medical apt close by. I went in and ordered 2pc snapper and chips. Once my order was completed I found a seat and started to eat. The seating area is limited and if various options, a couple tables here and there and a counter by the window. The fish was crispy and nicely battered and chips were decent. Fish size was again decent i wouldn't say the largest nor small but regular in size to decent fish and chip places. I visited here on August 1st on Friday to use up my gift card. I didn't get a chance to go when they were closed. I ordered an Oyster Po Boy, fries and a drink which came to total of $27.10. It was messy to eat Po Boy, but that wasn't an issue. Baguette was so crunchy on the outside it was perfect! There was some arugula, kimchi and 3 pcs of oysters in it. I also ordered fries it was huge! Fries were bit salty and overcooked I tossed it out in the end. I left my water and soda to drink them later after heading to washroom. Staff cleared my water and soda away. I still had half of soda in it. I felt thirsty after eating my food in the end. It'd have been nice if she asked me first before clearing dishes. Tasty fish & chips place on Main near 22nd. This place also sells fresh (frozen) and refrigerated seafood. Parking is available on the side streets. The inside does look like either the inside of a boat or a marina, with the rustic wood panels. Staff are friendly. No complaints. Pricing is a bit high, but this is the W side after all. I had the salmon fish & chips. The salmon batter was a bit thick, but crispy and juicy. Fish seemed okay. Nice large portion of fries, which is good for filling up. Comes with coleslaw and tartar sauce. The coleslaw is a bit light on the dressing, but still tasted okay. My buddy had the fish burger and enjoyed it. They also have other items such as oyster sandwiches, as well as wraps and tacos. Not a bad place to check out, but be prepared to shell out a few bucks more. read more

A couple of weeks ago I visited the fish counter on a rainy weekend. I was craving for some delicious fish and chips - I remember going to the fish counter years ago where I knew the fries would be perfectly crispy and the fish would be fresh. I was SOOOOO disappointed with my meal because it didn't live up to my expectations. The staff were super friendly and I was the only customer there-I was waiting for my fish and chips patiently, as I knew my order was going to be made fresh. I didn't think I would have to ask for my chips to be extra crispy as I remembered their fries being the benchmark for how perfectly hand cut fries should be done. I was proven so wrong that day. I know the chips I had were fresh as I saw them being prepared. I fully expected my meal to hold its crispiness when I took it home (which was about 10 minutes away). The fries were limp, borderline undercooked, not crispy at all. In photos it looks decent but it missed its trademark super crispy on the outside and pillowy soft in the inside (usually this is done when the cute fries are frozen and then fried). This was a huge disappointment as I was looking forward to the chips-even more than the fish itself. What happened to this place? I was so disappointed that it was hard to enjoy the rest of my meal. The deep fried oysters were fine and the fried fish was just okay, the batter felt a bit greasy. I really want to go back again to see if I was just unlucky and the person didn't leave the fries in long enough. Probably some of the best fish and chips I've had!! The cod was flakey and fresh, the frying oil was recently changed so it didn't have a bitter taste at all, and the fries were ultra crispy. I also loved their house made tartar sauce to dunk everything into. The fish and chips is quite a large portion so depending on how hungry you are you might only need one fried fish per person. This is the first time we visited since they changed ownership a couple of years ago. We ordered the 2pc cod/chips and 1pc oyster. The Cod--not dried out yet not moist at all, fish not seasoned at all, it was flavourless. Plus I was given 3 long strips of thin cut fish trimmings! The Batter--thick not light as it should be, soaked in so much grease that it overpowers the delicate flavour of white fish. The Oyster--taste fresh except for the oily heavy batter The Chips--uneven slices, some stuck together, taste ok If your palette prefer greasy oily battered fish, then you will enjoy it! It is always interesting to go to a place for the first time. There is a full menu of lunch options and choosing just one can be interesting. It was really quite nice. Not a five-star dining establishment but a "down to earth" place to get good seafood either to take home and cook from their real "fish counter" (not us this trip but I suspect quite a few locals do this) or to eat at their counters or shared tables (also seemed like neighborhood locals). Fish and chips seems to be their specialty but we ended up splitting a crab/shrimp croquette sandwich (with fries for us Americans) which was exactly what we wanted in a light lunch before walking in Queen Elizabeth Park. I didn't love the pickled cabbage that was in the baguette but it certainly wasn't bad and the slaw on the side was delicious. We will definitely return to try something else. And the big bonus for us turned out to be one the few shelf staples they carry with a seafood connections. One of our goals for this particular trip to Canada was to replenish our supply of Maille Dijon mustard that can be difficult (or more correctly expensive) sometimes to source in the US. After striking out at the Costco in Richmond (definitely not a place to go on a Saturday) we were happily surprised to seeing several 800 ml jars of it (we bought two) for a very reasonable price. read more

My first impression of this place was the appeal of their rustic decor. Both the food and the service were great. The menu has a good amount of options. I visited the fish counter on a Friday evening in search of some gluten free fish and chips, and wow they did not disappoint. The batter was comparable to a tempura style batter - very light and crispy. The tartar sauce was also very flavourful! From the time we ordered until we received our food was about 5 minutes even though there were other people in the shop. They were super fast in getting our order to us! There is one large table and some high top seats that face outside, so plenty of seating to choose from. My new favorite chippy in Vancouver! Sort of a chip shop with fish market all in one. This undoubtedly makes for really fresh fried fish and seafood stews! Two cod + halibut fish and chips: I like that you can randomly (for a price) add on an extra piece of fried fish to your order if you are hungry or indecisive. I don't usually like frie Halibut as it can come our a bit dry and chalky. This was decidedly not that! Very tasty and so fresh! The only downside would be the fries which were not as exceptional compared to the fish. Maybe next time just get the fish! Fried oysters: they sell them individually. Too huge to be eaten raw but quite good fried up! Again the freshness cannot be over stated Crab and shrimp cake baguette sandwich: nice little sandwich for a snack! The side of cole slaw was a nice counterbalance to all the fried things. I ordered so much I couldn't finish this. Bouillabaisse: this was also very excellent! Rich mixed seafood stew with clams, mussels, halibut, cod and salmon. Great use of the odds and ends from fish trimmings. So good and filling! The market is also full of great things to pick up like a variety of pickled seafood and kimchi. This place is amazing! There's clear signage to direct traffic in and out of the restaurant. The staff here are wonderful, they managed my allergy related questions well. My son has a peanut and wheat allergy and they were patient and answered my questions. The fries are always gluten free and they can make gluten free fish and chips. I highly recommend, often times I find a gluten free spot the mix is weird (gummy or falls apart). The gluten free battered chips were so crispy with huge chunks of fish! It's a Friday (a lenten Friday) and I was on the hunt for seafood. Thank goodness the FIsh Counter popped up because I was losing hope. I ordered 2 shrimp and crab baguettes over the phone and it was easy & seamless. I came to pick them up and was on my way back to Seattle with 2 yummy sandwiches in hand. My husband could not stop raving about this sandwich. When he can't stop talking about a dish/meal then you know it was THAT GOOD. The slaw was nice and crisp laced with celery seeds. The shrimp and crab patty was pan fried to perfection. Not a lot of breading and was filled with seafood. The bread was the perfect compliment to the patties + veggies. 10/10 recommend. My partner ended up eating it because 3/4 of us refused to eat it. Crab and shrimp sandwich - bread is soft and crusty. Too much filler IMO. but the Pattie's were not soggy so it worked out. THE BEST halibut fish and chips ever!! And I went on a fish and chips binge between Vancouver island and Vancouver the city so I know!!! First of all, it's a walk up counter situation with very minimal seating. I was lucky enough to get 4 seats at the counter top for my group. We noticed that there was fried salmon but we asked the staff and they said they would be able to grill us some salmon if we wanted. The staff are incredible. Very friendly and knowledgeable (Talked to my bf and his dad about salmon for 15 mins I swear). As we were walking away (about a block away) one of the staff members ran out to say bye to us. Been a while since we last visited The Fish Counter -- with the pandemic, they only let one person at a time for retail and food and they have markings on the floor to maintain proper distance. We called ahead for pick-up ai we didn't have to wait too long for our orders to come out on Father's day. We ordered the following: gluten free ling cod fish and chips for me, 1 deep fried oyster, salmonito (salmon wrap) and a side of caesar salad. Loved my GF ling cod -- it was cooked perfectly and the batter was crisp yet light and gluten free to boot! Their tartar sauce and coleslaw were perfect accompaniments to the fish too. The fries were tasty but sad that I waited too long to eat em as they became cold (my fault coz we had to drive to Queen E for a picnic). The oyster was huge and yummy but they don't offer a GF version for this but delicious nonetheless. The hubby scarfed down his salmonito and caesar salad.
