We had already tried to go to a different seafood restaurant elsewhere in North Vancouver but we didn't have a reservation and the restaurant was too busy to take us, so we decided to try our luck at The Fish Counter. When we arrived at The Fish Counter, it was around 6:20pm and there was a sign in the window which said that the restaurant would be closing at 7pm for a private event. I asked whether they could still take us if we made sure to have a quick dinner and they said they could. We ordered the following: New England Clam Chowder Handmade Crab Cake 1 Piece Ocean Wise Halibut Fish & Chips Oyster Po'Boy. The food was all very tasty. My one complaint though would be that there didn't seem to be any clams in my clam chowder. It was a very tasty soup. They put lots and lots of fish in it. I enjoyed the soup but it was really more of a fish chowder rather than a clam chowder. If it weren't for the soup I'd be giving this place 5 stars. The guy who seated us was very kind and gave us 10% off our bill just because our meal was quite rushed since they were closing unusually early for the 7pm private event. We very much appreciated this gesture, and the food was all very tasty. Highly recommend this place and will definitely come back again sometime.

This review is way overdue. Today's 100+ degree weather in SoCal is making me wish I had an ice cold glass of the gluten free beer I enjoyed at The Fish Counter this past April. The tropical draft brew our server recommended, complemented the equally delicious gluten free fish and chips I enjoyed. The generous piece of cod was fresh, well-seasoned and perfectly crispy on the outside. The chips were good too. My husband had the regular Fish & chips plus a cup of clam chowder and he too loved his meal. The restaurant is a cute, unpretentious eatery with friendly service. Will certainly return to The Fish Counter next time I'm in Vancouver. Wish I could remember the name of that tropical gluten free beer!

The menu was sparse and the fish and chips had funny after taste - cooked in old oil. We were not impressed.

Brilliant service along with awesome fish and chips. Cod and halibut (and likely salmon and snapper) perfectly cooked in a crispy batter.

Details: My GF and I greatly enjoyed a HH and early dinner at the bar on a weeknight in early October 2026. How lucky for us to find ourselves in the care of Calvin, a deeply-knowledgeable and thoroughly professional oyster geek. On Calvin's advice, we slurped up about 1-1/2 dozen raw oysters. We especially loved the brininess of the BC pa'aje and WA totten virginica bivalves; the slightly sweeter SunSeekers were good too. Every oyster was clean and delicious! The accompanying beverages (dry vodka martini and aperol) were lovely. Our follow-on main-course dishes were just okay. GF liked the poutine with shredded Atlantic lobster (when she could find any!), but declared the dish to be mostly gloggy french fries. My dungeness crab cakes were dull. For best results: stick to the raw oysters!

was looking forward to this spot but was kinda disappointed? i guess it just wasnt the spot for us…read more upon entering i noticed it was a busy night n so we waited for the host, who eventually walked up and stared at me until i said that i had a reservation. i hate to feel karen like but even a minor greeting is part of a host job i think. im sure he may have been quite busy or something but it definitely threw us off a tiny bit. the food overall was okay but nothing that i thought was worth the hype.. maybe we picked bad choices? i dont know. we were also sat at this awkward hightop/bench seating where my back was practically touching the girl around the corner, and we were super close to the table next to us. otherwise, the server was very nice and she had a good attitude. i think we expected to be wowed here but i guess it just wasnt our spot - oysters (im allergic to raw ones but family had it) - were reportedly good, nothing crazy apparently - seacuterie half with smoked scallops, prawns, mussel or oyster dip i think - overall was okay. the prawns were the only mere standout. there were good vegetable dressings that we enjoyed, but we felt like the chips tasted bland and kinda old - fish and chips - was good, fish was not dry, big amount of fries - fish tacos - okay for the price. nothing standout about it. was hoping for more sauce or the fish to be a littleee less dry - scallops and pork - as a whole none of us were very much fond of the scallops taste. the sauce was too herby and not in a refreshing way? just kinda off. they were cooked well it was just unfortunate about the taste. the pork was also cooked well but with an okay sauce.

Great Happy Hours are hard to find and grateful we came to North Van for this gem!…read more Loved their fantastic menu and their shrimp cocktail is exactly what you'd like. Huge fresh shrimp with some tasty cocktail sauce along and beautiful (and edible) garnish. Also ordered their buttermilk fried chicken which was nice and juicy! When they have oysters... definitely get them! Fantastic and super worth it at only $1.50 each :) And of course, truffle fries. Yes, that was our dessert and last minute add. My boyfriend and I were in a seafood mood and ordered the following: Seafood Tower: A showstopper. Beautifully presented, overflowing with fresh oysters, chilled prawns, lobster rolls, caviche, and tuna tartar. Everything tasted fresh and ocean-sweet but the lobster rolls buns were getting wet and soggy from the plate to ice condensation - an oversight on presentation logistics. Wagyu Carpaccio: Melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The wagyu was sliced paper thin and had that rich, buttery texture you hope for. The shaved truffle garnishe added just enough flavour without overshadowing the beef. Served with a few pieces of sourdough bread, it was one of my favourites. Roasted Chicken: I know--ordering chicken at a seafood-forward spot felt risky, but it ended up being one of the surprise standouts. Perfectly roasted with crispy skin and juicy, flavorful meat. It was served with a zesty sauce and roasted vegetables and really homey and tasty. Scallops Risotto: Creamy, aromatic, and cooked to that ideal al dente bite. The scallops were seared beautifully--golden on the outside and tender inside. Service was warm and attentive, and the coastal-chic atmosphere made the whole experience feel relaxed but still special. If you're anywhere near the area, Seaside Provisions is worth a visit especially since they have a Happy Hour.

I asked my daughter to search the neighborhood for a full-service restaurant, preferably seafood. Well, what a find - Fishworks was wonderful. Fortunately, since it was late that Friday evening, we were able to get a seat in the very crowded restaurant. Our server, Lucy, was very good. She described the fish dish of the day, and we were both sold. It was a great decision, as the halibut on a bed of polenta with vegetables was delicious. Normally, we would have ordered a salad or an appetizer beforehand, but being on vacation means not taking home leftovers, so we figured the entree would be enough. It sure was. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance too.

We also ordered the seafood tower for 2 and it came with clams, mussels, shrimp, baked oysters, calamari, crab legs, and lobster tail. It also came with a few distinctly different sauces and garlic butter, all of which were delicious and went with whatever piece of seafood you decided to dunk. We ate on the outdoor seating patio located streetside with a view looking down the Main Street towards the water. Stunning!! We came during their slow hours after the lunch rush while they were getting ready for dinner and they were still quick and attentive, very friendly, and consistent with service though out the afternoon.

2.5 stars -- Wonderful waiter, but a disappointing overall experience…read more I arrived at Riley's in Vancouver with five-star expectations, but unfortunately, my experience fell short. Despite having a reservation and taking an Uber to the restaurant, I did not feel welcomed as a solo diner. One hostess told me there had been a system error because I had just made my reservation, and that I would need to sit at the bar or potentially could not be accommodated. I checked out the bar, but because of my back issues, the seating was uncomfortable for me. Thankfully, the manager stepped in and accommodated me at a table. The clam chowder was absolutely amazing--at CAD $19, it was well worth it. However, both entrées I wanted were unavailable. First, I ordered the sea bass and was told it had just sold out. My waiter recommended the salmon Wellington, but that was also sold out. I ultimately tried the sablefish, which I found overly salty from the miso preparation. The Brussels sprouts were delicious, but by that point, I decided against ordering anything else. My waiter was phenomenal, and I appreciated the manager's help. Still, between the unwelcoming arrival, unavailable dishes, and disappointing main course, the overall experience did not justify the cost or meet my expectations. Others may have a better experience, but I won't be returning.

Our AirBnB hosts listed it as the only 5-star restaurant in town so we made a last minute reservation, which they graciously accommodated. What a great choice! First impressions don't convey 5-star, but once we settled in, the cozy and casual ambience was perfect. They have an extensive cocktail and wine list and we dove into the cocktail section. Really smart and interesting selection - would've loved to try more than two. We had a featured appetizer - an heirloom tomato salad with goats cheese and gazpacho dressing. Fresh, well presented and delicious. We also ordered the bread with lemon butter and olive oil. The multigrain bread was fantastic! For mains, I had the kobe beef and my partner had the meatballs with a side of roasted carrots. The beef melted in my mouth and the chimichurri sauce was possibly the best I've had. The meatballs and carrots had a decidedly north african flavour profile and were beautiful and balanced. Their menu is fantastic - if we lived nearby we would return to try almost everything.
