My boyfriend wanted Indian food and we were at sunset beach to watch the beautiful sunset unfold! We had about an hour and then about 45 mins for food or to get an order in since they were going to close at 9. We called ahead and they said we can order ahead of time so that they're aware of what to prepare. We got there and there was a group of 4 with 2 other customers. Place is small but we didn't mind :) The restaurant owner was very hospitable and nice! She explained what was available and asked what we prefer and took the time to answer our questions. The curry chicken korma was seriously so flavorful and spicy with a really good blend! Like it was pretty spicy but oh so good at the same time. Try the house bbq combo plate - it'll be sure to fill you up! I loved the sheikh kebab and the chicken boti! The lamb was okay -- it was a bit chewy and normally I love lamb. It came with a nice salad (my bf actually love the round raw onions on top of the salad ... and that is a first!) lol Each dish comes with rice on the plate and fresh naan bread! Normally at most Indian places, naan is separate with an express cost so overall, everything was very good! The restaurant owner commented and asked my boyfriend "is this your girlfriend?" "If so, I feel she has a very positive energy/ radiates such positivity!" That was very nice of her to say and such kind words. The place has a ceiling fan and a fan but it was generally very warm :/ so that's why I docked a star but it's generally understandable too. Love these hole in the wall small family owned places! In my first review for Mirchi, I wrote that I expected to be back -- and that has proven true. We love this place and consider it one of our regular places. The flavours are fantastic. We've tried most of the main dish options: the lamb and chicken versions of their Karahi, Vindaloo, Classic korma, Tandoori Masala Tikka, Goat curry, Saag , House combo (various meats). Every one of them has been excellent. We haven't had anything we didn't LOVE. Our minds have not changed about this place. It's our favorite Indian spot in the city, and we eat here (take out) often. read more

My husband and I have been enjoying the food here for more than a decade. We are ruined for any other Indian restaurant!

They used to be really good and decently priced before COVID. Went there yesterday to pick up a Butter Chicken order. Surprised that it took less than 10 minutes. $17 for Rice, Nan and Butter Chicken Curry. Went home after a 5 min drive and noticed Rice was cold and Curry was oily and watery. Never had such bad Butter chicken before. Feels like they did not correctly cook it properly. Portion is on the small side, not much chicken. Menu says it should come with salad, but no salad was included. Also should mention that the restaurant has really poor ventilation. Was in a restaurant for less than 10 minute and all clothing smelled like curry. Will not go back for Indian food ever again. There are much better options for the same price. Fantastic place for Pakistani food. I've been to many places for South Asian food (mostly Indian) but by far I really enjoyed coming to Mirchi. The place is pretty small and tight (not a lot of seating beyond some 4-person tables) but - the good thing is that it's a quaint little restaurant that has very nice staff. The owners seemed to have come back from vacation the day that we came to the restaurant so we were a little sad to find out that many items were not in stock. Despite that, our group of 6 got several dishes to try and share which made it great to try a bunch of new foods. I have to say, the lamb vindaloo and the naan were two of the dishes that I really liked, topped off by a delicious mango lassi. And despite ordering several dishes for us all to share, the total was $20 before tip! Definitely a great deal. Overall, this place is out of the way from where I work and live but I would definitely come back here to get my fix of South Asian food. This place has become my new benchmark restaurant! read more

Would not have tried this gem if it weren't for the Yelp reviews! It was a wonderful time enjoying the homecooked style food while it was pouring outside. Ordered two lunch specials, which are served daily 11AM-3PM. The rice and salad were displayed like a work of art on the plate. Rice was so fluffy and intact. Naan was great. We ordered the butter chicken ($9.50) and aloo gobi ($8.50). Very tasty and the rice and naan were perfect to soak up every last drop. I liked how the meats were cut into small pieces as well. My husband and I were walking around in Marpole and thought we'd call into Mirchi for some Indian food. It is a very tiny place so don't have any high seating expectations. It is a family run Business; they have a great story about their journey. All the photos on the wall is of their journey to open this restaurant - it's phenomenal and very touching. I was almost in tears when I learnt of their story. Now to the food - it is spectacular! I ordered lamb and my husband Biryani. There is no doubt that this is home-style cooking; nothing fancy but right from the heart. The portion is generous. The food was fresh and comply delicious. The service was very slow - it is (or was) a one man show. We had a brief chat and I don't think he is planning on hiring anyone anytime soon. He is an amazing guy though. If he expanded a little bit, this place can be phenomenal. I just hope he gets some help so that the service is faster than what it was. read more

This was our first stop after we landed in Vancouver and thank you to this restaurant for our wonderful meal!!!! His flavors are kicking ass and they come through in every bite. Best Indian food I've ever had. The nihari is so good. The butter chicken is amazing. The saag paneer was on my top favorites. His rice was great, fresh, fluffy perfection. We knew when we walked in this place it would be good because we saw him in the kitchen cutting the fresh veggies and the reviews, we didn't expect it to be the best we ever had. Yes! This place is awesome! So cute, so tasty, so nice. This brightly coloured establishment with super friendly and sweet owners is just the place to grab some lunch. Yes, the food takes a while, and the sign tells you to be patient, but it is well worth the wait. And for the price, you just can't beat the quality and love that goes into this food. In case you aren't sure, there are little signs that tell you how much love goes into their cooking. Adorable. Joe and Parveen have polo shirts that match their lime green and yellow walls and they are just so sweet. I was asked if I would like my chai sweet, I was thanked many times for coming in for lunch and told to come back again, and I was treated so nicely throughout my meal. I had the eggplant curry for lunch ($7.50, meat dishes $8.50) which came with salad and rice. The salad had a fruity mango dressing. Tasty! I also ordered a naan, because you have to have naan, and it was light and soft and perfect. The chai was nice, too. Not the best chai ever, but good. The curry was awesome. And it wasn't heavy, how some curries can be. I had medium spice, and it was quite spicy. Not too spicy for me, but not for wimps. The portions are big and I really would have been full without the naan but I ate it ALL. Every last scrap, and every grain of rice. The decor is definitely a little outdated, like the Tiffany lamps, but it's cute, and who cares when the food is this good and cheap. Their walls are covered in photos of regulars and famous people that have come by. They really love their customers, and seem to have a good following of regulars who are happily greeted when they come through the door. You've got to give this place a try! read more

A lot Indian/Pakistani restaurants cut corners by using the same curry bases for all their dishes and loading up with cream and butter that make dishes rich at the expense of flavor. But not at Mirchi, everything is so fresh, that you can actually taste the aromatics, spices and herbs that makes Indian food so delicious. Stumbled upon this place tired and hungry after a day of sight seeing, with lots of skeptical family members. The restaurant didn't seem like much from the outside and maintains a simple interior on the inside. But as I entered and saw delighted customers leave the restaurant, I saw hope. Simply put, this restaurant is a gem. It is extremely rare to fine someone who cooks with such high regard and love. Everything we ordered was prepared with care and tasted delicious and succulent. Order the kabab combo, it has the essence of the restaurant in one plate. Even the salad was fresh and you could tell from the onions and tomatoes. The chicken and lamb kababs were delicious, the lamb korma was flavorful. The vindaloo was complex. The basmati rice was fresh and perfectly cooked. The service takes a while, but if you wore a tuxedo and waited for the same time at 1-star Michelin restaurant, you wouldn't be complaining if the restaurant brought you finely prepares complex dishes... So my recommendation, try this place if you are in Vancouver or visiting. Keep an empty stomach, and clear out a few hours and savor the magic of this place. read more

I am at a complete loss for where all of these 5 star reviews come from. Both from a food perspective and the experience, probably one of the bottom 3 places for this kind of fare I've had in Vancouver over the last 30 years. I would hope that I'm just plain wrong and it was a bad night but 2 things make that not possible since they would not change,... high prices (for this kind of food) and the bizarre layout of the place that makes it completely. There is a big wall down the centre that makes it feel cramped and weird since you know the chef is 2 feet away. The food itself was not bad,.. maybe middle of the rankings for Indian or Punjab food, but I couldn't shake that this place was not clean. The floor was slippery with oil, extremely slippery, and they also had a very smokey grease fire while we were there. I might have been able to look past some of that were it not for the horrible uncomfortable service. We're pretty low maintenance and generally like to be left alone,.. but not that much,.. 3 times the chef (who I think is the owner) had to take matters into his own hands and come out to deal with us,.. the woman there must not be the regular staff (I say that because other people claim service here was good,.. I've rarely seen worse, not rude just weird and inattentive unless you think of being ignored as rude). It was snowing this day so I wonder if the staff couldn't make it in,.. we also were the only customers on a Thursday night. The rest I can just say was "awkward", that is the best way I can describe it - but I will not be back. I was hoping that this place was some hidden gem only slow because it was in a less busy neighbourhood - wrong. read more

A great place for spicy Pakistani style Indian food in Marpole! I had the chicken biryani which is available only on Fridays and Saturdays. The spices tasted very flavourful and there was a generous amount of chicken, but the spices might make you sweat. I wasn't really prepared for the sweaty forehead and face. I should have brought a sweat towel. I also managed to try some of the butter chicken and chicken curry. The butter chicken was nice and it actually tasted a little spicy and the sauce was light in texture. The chicken curry was almost as spicy as my chicken biryani, but the chicken curry didn't taste as good as the chicken biryani and butter chicken. There just wasn't that curry taste to it that made me say, "This stuff is so good." All in all, this place is perfect for those who love spicy food and chicken dishes. Interior is very small and there's a pleasant spicy scent to the place. I was even surprised that only one person who was the owner ran the entire restaurant when I was there on a Saturday. read more

Food at MIRCHI are good! Chef Joseph is a nice kind and respectful owner. I have been to this place for long time time and it really get busy sometimes, depends on the day. Chef Joseph is only alone cooking and it gets really crazy some days but he still catch up the cooking though and rushing making everything done. The place is not big but it gets crazy hot in there especially this hot summer day.... We were searching for a new restaurant to get Biryani since our favourite place closed last year, Can Ra in International Village. My significant other had read about Mirchi online a few months back and we finally dropped in. The aromas hit you as you enter and, although it's not the cleanest, we were inspired to try it anyway. After all, we already smelled like a charcoal fire from hanging out waiting for a table. The Friday-Saturday lunch special looked simple enough but all the elements of a good Biryani were in the dish. Seeds, twigs and pods of great spices, tender flavourful chicken and the right rice with a simple romaine, onion, tomato and cucumber salad with a few drizzles of orange dressing and a refreshing and plentiful raita add up to a delightful lunch. I had to find a remote to mute the blaring TV and this is a one man operation so you may have to wait a while but I still would have given the 5th star if the place was cleaner and less cluttered. We will return to try the other India inspired fare so it could end up in our permanent rotation. read more

I love curry, curried lamb, curried chicken, curried fish, if they made some sort of curried brownie I'm sure I would love it. I think I'm going name my first born Curry McCurryson. Thanks to yelp we found Mirchi which was conveniently located close to my parents airport hotel. Right when I entered I knew from the smell i was going to be in for a treat. This is a tiny little family run joint that is not known for it's ambiance, but from my experiences this seems to be the best formula for some of the greatest curry dishes I've ever had. Note: do not come here if you are in a hurry. This place has a sign "Please be patient as the food is made fresh", I knew from the reviews that I might be waiting but that's a-ok with me. We ordered the Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma and Matar Paneer, all three were delicious, but the icing on the top was the hot fresh naan bread. -drool- read more

We were heading up to Vancouver for the day and were starving so we yelped for Indian food and Mirchi came up with rave reviews. I'm so glad we stopped here. I had the saag and lamb, my daughter had the channa Marsala and her boyfriend just had to try the goat curry. They were all so delicious! We added samosas and mango lassi's. Mercy, Mirchi! You make some tasty Northern Indian/Pakistani food. First impression is that they must do a lot of take out business because on a Saturday night, other than a couple who were just finishing up and then a couple who arrived as we were finishing up, we were the only customers. The decor is bright and cheerful - although the fake poinsettias in the vase on the table were an *interesting* design choice. The one point demerit comes from the overall cleanliness of the establishment. We had a table against the wall and the wall was very grimy. By the look of it, it had not seen a cleaning in quite some time, definitely gross. Service was pretty good and the food was outstanding. We started with a vegetable pakora which came with 2 sauces. The individual pieces were a lot smaller than I am used to but they were plentiful so no complaints here. Although they were fried they were surprisingly light and not the least bit greasy. The chicken korma was fabulous. I tend to not eat Northern Indian food too often because as a rule I find it too rich and heavy but this dish was the antithesis. I ordered it medium heat which I have to warn you is Indian medium not North American medium. No need to use decongestants for the sinuses after a bowl of this. The chicken melted in my mouth like butter and the spicing was spot on perfection. The naan was hot out of the oven and so good I could have made a meal of just that. The portion size, particularly of the basmati rice, was very generous. We will be back on a Friday or Saturday for the chicken biryani. Because they usually sell out early, we were told that if you call in and let them know that you are coming in for dinner they will save you a portion. There are a lot of signs scattered throughout the restaurant stating that the food is cook to order so it may take slightly longer to get to you - well worth the wait. read more

My favourite place for Indian food in Vancouver! Tucked away in sleepy Marpole, this place is a hidden gem. Everything is made from scratch which really pays off in terms of quality and flavour. I have tried several of their dishes, but the Karachi Lamb and Goat Curry are stand out favourites. All dishes are served with rice, salad and naan. The dinner prices are reasonable ($12ish), while at $8.50 the lunch prices are a steal! I just wish they delivered!!! Personally I prefer this (or a fusion type Indian) because I find Indian flavours to be sharper and saltier. Service is friendly, the lady (Chef's wife?) take the time to explain what the dishes are. I used to live right around the neighborhood (about 10 min walk to the restaurant) and now that I've moved about 1 hour commute away I still find myself making the trip at least once a month. That's how much I love this place. Their food is just simply amazing. I've been trying different things on the menu and there wasn't one that I didnt like. My all time favorite would definitely have to be the Butter Chicken. It's just the best I've ever had! One small complain I have about this restaurant though is that it is very small. Definitely not a good place for large groups. I made the mistake of eating there once while the place was jam packed with people. Food just took forever. I can understand the reason for the wait since there is only one chief and one waiter. I just wouldn't want to be in that situation again. All in all, great restaurant, great food, great people. We were in Vancouver this past week and decided to go to this place as it was close to the airport. I have to say this place is a gem. It's one of those that's the last one of its kind where owners actually talk to customers and then serve fresh cooked food while we wait. It's a one man show and he's great at it. This really is a fantastic place and flies under the ethnic radar. There's lots of street parking on nearby streets off Granville, and after rush hours, Granville's up for grabs too. This is a small, brightly-coloured little family-run PAKISTANI place. Not Indian. Close, but there's different seasonings going on here, and, lordie, that's a good thing. If I have one complaint, it's that there can be some confusion when phoning in an order. It's a language/translation thing, so just clarify stuff once or twice. It's *really* worth the hassle. The channa masala is really amazing, not too much tomato, a nice mix of spices, fresh cilantro. Just wonderful. The samosas are made in small batches, fresh-fried to order. You'll find that the curries don't seem to be thickened with starch or flour, the oils separate, and everything seems much less "restauranty" than other places. For me, it feels like going for dinner at that friend's place who has the AWESOME cook for a mom? Except she's Pakistani and it's even cooler. When you order, say, butter chicken, for about $13 (lost my menu), it tends to come with the channa, naan, and rice, so it's actually a really good deal compared to some places. (Like friggin' Joey's and their made-by-white-people version for $17.) This is the kind of business I'd love to see more people support -- good qualities, skillful cooking, off the beaten path, more traditional ethnic food, great service, and a lot of food (not just a big bowl of rice). Check out Mirchi's if you like Indian food, because Pakistani cuisine's awesome, and these guys have it nailed. PS: I've only had a sampler of their biryani, but they make it the traditional way in large batches, but only on either Thursday/Friday or Friday/Saturday, and it's a great lunch special for about $8, and often sells out long before it should, the owners tell me.
