I haven't been back to this restaurant for at least 15 years. I was surprised that it still exists. It is located right across from Mountainview cemetery. It has been around for at least over 30 years. The restaurant is quite small and parking is very limited. There are pay street parking and residential free parking if you can find any. The food itself was pretty good. Prices are slightly cheaper than other place and portion size is quite big. We were a table of 15. I came here with my cousins and aunts and we ordered a lot. We had more than enough food but when my cousin came to ordering, the server kept on saying it was not enough when it was clearly way more than enough. The restaurant's decor is not bad. It must have been renovated sometime within the last 10 years. The restaurant itself is bright and clean looking. Overall, good food and good experience.

    Various dim sum dishes
    Thu P.

My favourite dim sum dishes are the deep fried pork dumplings (ham sui gok) and the shrimp paste with eggplant and Koon Bo by far makes those the best in Vancouver in my opinion! The shrimp paste and eggplant dish has a light coating of batter on the outside to give it a nice crisp. The pork dumpling is crispy on the outside and perfectly soft and chewy on the inside for my soft mouth. It's incredibly well-fried. I also really like the salted egg yolk custard bun.. Eat it while it's still hot! My brother says it's "life changing." Even my partner who doesn't like salted egg still thought the filling was okay. If you order a certain amount, you get free plain rice rolls which are really yummy! All the other dishes I tried range from good to bad. DO NOT get the egg tarts, Trust Me. I'll continue coming back here to get my delicious favourites since those are all I order anyway haha. Service was typical Cantonese restaurant service. It was extremely slow on a Saturday morning! We were the only table in the restaurant for a long time. I like how quiet it is. Doesn't feel bustling or rushed.

    Roasted squab!
    May L.

One of the top restaurants for roasted squab in Vancouver! Sun Sui Wah is apparently ranked #1 but I've been told it's debatable. My family has been coming here for years and are usually sure to come by at least once every time we are in town. We preordered squabs when making the reservation to ensure we'd be able to have some. The food here is solid. We had their west lake beef soup and it was literally the best one I've ever had. Honestly can't really remember what else we ordered beside the squab but everything was really good. The squab here is also the best. The skin was roasted enough to be crispy but not dry and the meat was juicy and bursting with flavor. Definitely got my hands dirty trying to get all the meat off the bones. It's so good my cousins from Toronto always order extras just to hand carry them on the flight home for their extended family. I can't wait to be back for our next family dinner here!

    Half eaten pigeon

My friends and I enjoyed eating here last night. Parking was easy, they have a parking lot in the front. I showed up a bit early and our table was already set. We were showed to the table and our server recommend some specials of the day. We decided on getting a oyster each. On the phone I have already made an order for their award winning pigeon and winter melon soup. And it was one of the best I've had in a long time. There were 8 of us, we each had at least one bowl of soup and we only finished half the soup! Wouldn't recommend on getting the soup unless you have a bigger group. The food came out at a good pace. We ended up eating until they closed at 10pm. They weren't rushing us out as we dined past their opening hours. 10/10 would come again

Saw they were opened for dimsum. Decent dimsum and definitely on the larger sized dumplings. We came here for their signature shredded chicken and it tasted just like how it did 10 years ago. Love the pickles and crunch in the dish. Moderate priced dimsum. Bring your own worsheshire sauce. Odd that they didn't have it.

Very good service. Really liked the hand Schroeder chicken fish, and the BBQ duck. So tasty, we have been back a number of times.. Yummy Lobster specials also.

    Two crabs

They got the different packages on sale recently and we tried $148 for two crabs and 3 other dishes. As usual, we must order the shredded chicken which is as good as usual. Thereafter, we ordered the minced tofu and fried beef... all tasted good with good portion. While crabs are selling at $12.8/lb, two crabs package set is such a great deal and is yummy... will try the lobster or peking duck set next time... looking forward to it!

Crispy Stuffed Tofu and Honey Garlic Rib

Koon Bo is a place that is a well-known Chinese restaurant in the Fraserhood neighbourhood. You can see all their awards posted on the door and walls. Service may be severely lacking when busy on the weekends. The layout of the restaurant is extremely cramped. They definitely have overbooked the seating capacity. As you can see, most tables have the same dishes. Roast squab, shredded chicken salad, pan-fried black cod, winter melon soup, lobster with sticky rice on the lotus leaf, and crispy stuffed tofu and honey garlic rib are mostly reviewed by the food bloggers. We came in a group of 13, and we followed the same path and pre-ordered almost every signature dishes on the menu. We felt the food quality was not the same as before. 水凖大不如前 My faviourite was their winter melon soup. The soup was super delicious as its full of seafood (scallops, crab meat, shrimp, and squid). It also topped up with a few slices of roast duck breast. Super yummy! Koon Bo Restaurant 冠寶美食之家 is located in a small strip mall at 5682 Fraser Street, Vancouver, BC. Food: 4/5 Should Try! Service: ‍‍2/5 Kids: 3/5 A-Ok for Kids ! Price: $50-$100 for two (dinner) Presentation: 2/5 Parking: 1/5 super small strip mall, but easy to find along neighbouring streets parking Tips: *must make reservation *requires pre-order in advance if you want to try their features dishes *serves huge portions Would I Return: Yes ‍

    Lobster with rice

Ok I know the reviews aren't stellar here, but we actually had a fantastic experience and it was one of our favorite meals on our Vancouver trip. The food is phenomenal. The lobster with rice was so delicious and flavorful. The winter melon soup was creative (served in a carved winter melon) and tasty. The fried tofu was perfectly crispy. And the tapioca pudding was just right to top off the meal. Service was really good for us - the waitress was attentive and made sure we were kept updated on our food when needed. She was really nice and had a great attitude. Ambiance is nothing special, pretty typical Chinese restaurant vibes in a strip mall across from a cemetery lol, but the food will make you forget where you are. Would highly recommend and gladly come back next time we are in town!

We came in for a family dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant looks like it's renovated. It looks way brighter and the menu books look brand new when compared to the time we came in a couple of months ago. The staff and menu items look the same so I don't think they changed owners. We ordered the famous shredded chicken again. Sweet and sour boneless pork, fish maw soup and seafood on steamed egg whites. Chicken with black bean sauce on crispy egg noodles. I was quite impressed that eventhough restaurant was half full but the dishes came out pretty quickly. The shredded chicken appetizer was a good size for 5 people. There were lots of pickled vegetables and crispy wontons but there could be more jellyfish for sure, this dish was $21.00. The menu indicates they used half a chicken but I don't think that's true. The steamed egg was not over done and it was super smooth. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually used big prawns while most places use the baby tasteless shrimp. The chow mein was very crispy with lots of chicken. Overall we spent $100 for 5 people. And I would come back to try their other dishes like the Cod 2 ways for $62.00 (fish soup and cod stir fried with vegetables) This restaurant is located in a small strip mall with limited parking but street parking can easily be found. 1 star was taken off because they don't take MasterCard. Only visa and cash

The latest advertised $19.8 is just for the small crab itself, they should clearly list there's a cooking fee (from $4) on top.

A Gastronomic Awakening in Chinatown! You don't truly know…read moreuntil you go--and now that I've been, I'm haunted. As I write this, I am literally still dreaming of the Hong Kong Style BBQ Pork. It didn't just "eat" well; it dissolved into a decadent, sweet, fatty puddle of pure bliss. Walking in, the vibe is quintessential Chinatown: a bustling counter, a glass case showcasing glistening roasted treasures, and a seating area that trades fancy decor for pure, functional authenticity. We were clearly out of our element, probably looking like deer in headlights, but the staff met our confusion with warm smiles. Then came Bobby--the absolute heart and soul of this place. We walked in expecting the standard American-Chinese routine, but Bobby whisked us away to a cozy table and treated us like family. He started us off with a fragrant jasmine tea so naturally sweet and floral it didn't need a grain of sugar--perfect for a biting winter night. While we flirted with the Happy Hour menu, Bobby took the reins. You don't say no to a man with that much charisma and passion! On his expert recommendation, we pivoted to the Two-Meat Combo (BBQ Pork + Soy Chicken) with a side of their famous Roast Duck. The food arrived in a lightning-fast 10 minutes, but the real treat was Bobby's play-by-play on how each dish was prepared. You can taste the pride in every bite. The balance was masterclass: a symphony of sweet, salty, and umami. The meats were succulent, the skins were shattery-crisp, and the glazes were perfectly sticky. The undisputed heavyweight champion, however, was that Hong Kong BBQ Pork. Imagine the best "burnt ends" of your life, drenched in a caramelized, mouth-watering sauce that demands your full attention. We left Chinatown BBQ feeling more than just sated--we felt enlightened. If you're looking for a "one in a million" meal, let Bobby order for you. You won't regret it.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.
