Shanxi sliced noodle with braised beef. Both the noodle and meat have great texture!

Tucked away inside an ordinary business building, this northern Chinese noodle spot feels like a delightful secret waiting to be discovered. The entrance can be easy to miss the first time. You'll likely circle the building once or twice but that small bit of wandering is part of the adventure, and you'll be rewarded within minutes. Steer your expectations away from décor. The dining room is unapologetically basic, furnished with folding picnic tables and a vibe that's closer to a humble canteen than a polished restaurant. It is not pretty, but that stripped-back atmosphere somehow lets the food do all the talking! Let's deep dive into the noodle bowl. The noodles are the real star and spiciness is the theme here. Perfectly bouncy with a pleasing thickness that gives each bite satisfying resistance. They hold up beautifully in the broth and pair wonderfully with the tender, braised beef, which comes slotted generously into the bowl. The broth itself is savory and well-balanced, complementing the noodle texture and meat without overpowering them. Honestly, it's the kind of bowl that feels both comforting and expertly executed. Small dishes also shine. The chili sauce wontons offer a lovely peanut kick that's balanced and flavorful; while the preserved egg dressed with soya chili sauce presents a shaper, savory heat. They are distinct flavor profiles. I found myself leaning a bit more toward the wontons, though the preserved egg is certainly enjoyable. It's just a matter of personal taste. Portion sizes and pricing make this spot a standout for value. The food quality you get here feels unbeatable. The price is simply unbelievably inexpensive in today's economy. Service is another pleasant surprise. A single server on that evening was cheerful, attentive, and managed everything efficiently, adding to the overall positive experience. If you can overlook the minimal décor and focus on the food, and if you particularly like spicy food, this little Markham gem delivers authentic northern Chinese noodles with heart and skill. For anyone who prioritizes flavor and authenticity over frills, this place is highly recommended! Don't forget about the 5% cash discount.

Truly a hidden gem! Tucked away at the back of an office building, I never would've realized there was a restaurant here if I hadn't come across it on IG There's 2 entrances: one in the back (you'll see a white circle) and one through the inside of the office building from the front (they have signage) Inside, there's minimal seating. Can fit probably around 20 people are so. Been here a couple times now and tried a few different items. Price is affordable, portions are huge, and they even have free refill if you order the knife cut noodle but one bowl is plenty to fill you up. Salad Mix: I get this everytime and love how we can mix and match the different apps/salad Sliced Dried Noodle w/ Pork & Veggie (little spicy): this is my go to order! Beef Noodle w/ Soup: tried it with both knife cut noodle and potato noodle. Beef was tender, both variation was great but if you get the one with the potato noodle, it comes with more toppings Sliced Noodle w/ Tomato, Egg, and Pork: simple but hits the right place Sliced Noodle w/ Pickled Veggie & Pork: it's okay, but prefer the other options more Sweet & Sour Meatballs: the taste kinda reminds me ikea meatballs. I like it but found the sauce to be too thick/goopy Chili pepper w/ Preserved Eggs: WAYYYYYY TOO SPICY.

'Knife Cut Noodles' is also 'Shanxi Noodles' when you google on map. This small eatery is hidden inside a commercial office building without sign to be found, obviously the place survives by words of mouth. You may enter from front through building entrance, then restaurant entrance is on right hand side, or otherwise you may go around to the back of the building for the back entrance. The place is with basic decorations and with not many tables, it was full on a Tuesday lunchtime. They serve authentic Shanxi cuisine such as soup noodles, cold noodles, dumplings, a variety of cold appetisers and hot dishes. We tried the signature pork soup noodles, pork & cabbage dumplings, cold pork slices, and a cold vegetable combo. All foods were strong in taste but flavourful. Service was good, portion sizes were good and inexpensive, we'll come again.

Knife cut noodles are tasty and made fresh to order. I had the pork and veg noodle in soup. Also wontons in soup. A nice broth with a slight tang note.

We visited 老山西面馆 with our two kids. It's tucked away in the northwest corner of Warden & Highway 7, inside an office building -- the sign is small, so it's easy to miss. The restaurant itself is tiny, with only about 5-6 small tables. We ordered Beef Knife-Cut Noodles, Lamb Knife-Cut Noodles, Hot & Sour Vermicelli, a cold appetizer combo, and a crispy pepper-salt flatbread. What we liked: Both the beef and lamb knife-cut noodles were chewy and well-made, with generous portions of meat and good flavor. The flatbread was crispy, and the cold dish was fresh. Service was quick and efficient, and prices are reasonable. What we didn't like: The Hot & Sour Vermicelli was a complete miss -- the chili used had a harsh, choking spiciness rather than a fragrant heat. I only had a couple of bites before giving up. Overall: If you're craving authentic Shanxi-style knife-cut noodles, this is a great spot to try -- just skip the hot & sour vermicelli.

Cheap homemade noddles I saw this place on map, but it is hard to find. It is at a back of a office building. I would not expect an office building has a small restaurant. If you want to come here, park at the office building parking lot as map suggested. Walk into the back. We came on a Saturday, and this place is not busy. There were only a couple of tables. The food is very homemade, fresh noddles, large portion. There is 5% discount if you pay cash. I would definitely come back because it is pretty cheap. I would recommend if you want to eat homemade noodles.

The food was very flavorful and my son enjoyed all the veggies and noodles. We came for lunch and due to the location it was very quiet and nice to be at

Shanxi Noodles is a restaurant that I would never have known existed on the map, even if I were to live close by, if a colleague of mine had not taken me there. All the menu seems to have the same common base and then customized to your liking, e.g, beef, porc and spicy or not. I typically choose a restaurant that offers food creativity options that I would not be able to make at home and replicate that same taste or close. I ordered the beef noodles with the option of adding spiciness. Ordering is done by taking a photo of the barcode stuck on the wall and choosing the menu which goes to my cart. Once I confirm, the order goes directly to the kitchen. Service was very fast and pleasant. The size of the bowl was enormous and I wished that they could cut back on the size and by default, the price too. It was far too big for my lunch and half a bowl would have been enough, as the rest went to waste. Although the food was tasty, it looks plain, to the extent that there is nothing that I could not replicate at home. It is an ok menu but not one that would arouse my urge to have a repeat. Since all the rest of the menu has similar common characteristics, it is as if I have tasted all the different food on the menu.

A hole in the wall noodle place, located behind an office building. The entrance was very hard to find but there were a handful of cars parked. The food was mediocre and tasted like something I can make at home. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special either. The broth wasn't very flavourful. The noodle were also a little too soft. There's a sign in Chinese that says if you write them a 5 star google review, you get a free side dish.

It comes with 1 hot clay pot rice, 1 soup noodle, and a decent sized snack. A few choices for each of these items. Check the menu out. Honestly can't ask for more and this is why it gets jam packed easily at lunch time. Good news is that people are usually eat-and-go without sticking around for long. So even with the crowd, you might be able to get a seat in 10~15 min during the busiest time. Alternatively, quite a bit of people simply call-in for takeout's and Uber. Awesome price-value, decent comfort food with great taste, jam-packed at lunch time. Not a bad choice.

It was really oily, though the noodles were really nice and chewy. I found the pool of oil quite difficult to get past though. Next we got the classic beef noodles. We went for the flat, soft noodles which were great. As they state though, it gets really soft and mushy after a bit, so I recommend maybe sticking with the regular chewy noodles. The beef was soft and the radish was sweet. The soup base was comforting in a way but also very heavily salty. I couldn't tell if there was just a lot of MSG in there, but I couldn't sip on the soup much. We also ordered the shan xin bao, which is a fried soup dumpling of sorts. The breading was really thick and the soup was quite sweet. Not really the taste we were use to. We also got the pig ear and cucumbers cold dish. This was absolutely swimming in oil as well. They chop up black bean in there for flavour and it just added a really bitter taste. We didn't end up touching most of this, opting to bring it home, rinse it, and re-season it ourselves instead so the food wouldn't be wasted. All in all, the service is nice. I think the baked rice could be worth a try, but there's a lot of great noodle options in the area I personally prefer. As always, give it a try! They have a lot of great reviews on Yelp, so it potentially just doesn't suit my preferences.

They also have tomato base, spicy or other options if you're not a fan of fish, but my favorite is probably the original fish broth base. It comes with pieces of white fish. You can also switch it up and have it come with other ingredients such as fish tofu, or brisket. Definitely recommend to come try. There is a bit of a wait often when I come on the weekend but service is quick and speedy, in a typical hk-Asian style. The space is also a converted house so the layout is a bit odd and a bit hot in some corners, but manageable. If you cannot do steep steps, ask the servers to have you seated on the main level.
