New owner, new signage, still not great doughnuts Gave this place another try, since it recently updated and had new signage. For a place that extolls fresh donuts, the two I got were not so fresh. The red velvet was weirdly bready, rather than being a cake-like consistency. The chocolate flavor was artificial, and there wasn't enough sweetness to counteract the artificial perfume of the donut. You doughnut know what you're missing! Saw this local shop and thought why not! What a cute little shop ironically situated right next to a Dunkin Doughnuts which is brazen and hilarious! This is my favorite donut shop. The donuts are large cakey happiness. The flavor options are plentiful and oh so tasty. On several occasions, I've brought a couple dozen of these in to work to make workshops less painful. Now people ask me to bring them all the time and are really disappointed if I don't! They are definite crowd pleasers. Some of my favorites include - coconut - toasted coconut - chocolate toasted coconut - red velvet -blueberry cake -maple bacon with real bacon -so many more... The coffee is pretty good and they have flavored syrups. The egg sandwiches are really good but will take a while because they make them from scratch. Maybe you can call ahead to order them? Why did it take me so long to enter this shop? I donno, I drive past it almost everyday. One of the best old fashioned donuts I've ever had... I walked in at around noon ... the shelves were almost depleted ... all were gone just a couple left so I had very few to choose from apple filled, glazed , marble frosted, fritters and the blueberry cake.... and that's what I picked the blueberry cake, very crumbley more cake like (as the name suggests) and less Donut like.... had a crisscross pattern on it and was lightly glazed you could see the blueberries peeking through it. All you need to know, tastes like heaven and extremely fresh donuts. If you get there early enough you will have plenty to choose from all kinds of shapes too. I ran in for an iced coffee & thought wtheckfire, I will get 2 donuts & do some taste testing with the kids. This is a VERY simple little shop on the corner of Hartford Rd & McKee St right off 384. It's about as barebones as they get but you can immediately tell the bagels & donuts are homemade. I actually really wanted a bagel but decided to try some donuts for once. I ordered the maple bacon & Bavarian creme. Both light but with a nice substantial weight & slight chewy texture. Both were solidly very good. Not OTT good but perfectly fine. I had the iced coffee which in my mind, could've been a bit better. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't that flavorful or robust. They have a large selection of flavored shots to choose from including pistachio which I thought was pretty cool. The woman there was very nice, polite, friendly & efficient. Ellen, the owner of Jem's Gardens (as well as my neighbor), recommended King Donuts to me when I asked her if she knew of any local places that sell a nice cup of coffee. I've been here a few times, and the coffee IS great, and really cheap. If you're looking for a fancypants frapparamalamadingdong latte...this ain't it. But a good, classic "donut shoppe coffee", it is. It's what I imagine the cops are drinking on their donut runs in the movies, honestly. How are the donuts, you ask? They definitely hit the spot. I can't say that they are the best I've ever had by any means, because I'm still searching for my "holy grail" of donuts in the Hartford area. This is one of those odd 'hole in the wall' donut places that I passed by for years. I've lived in Manchester my whole life and always passed this place by since I've always gone to other coffee and pastry places (Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts). I figured I'd try it when I was in the area and wanted a quick coffee. Their coffee is awesome - always fresh and super hot (I like my coffee lava hot, something other coffee places are hit or miss with). In particular I really like their cream. I know it's an odd thing to praise, but they use a delicious type of cream for their coffee. Also their donuts are top-rate. They're not those light and fluffy donuts you get at Dunkin - these are old-fashioned, dense donuts. And their coffee rolls are about the size of your head (I'm not even exaggerating). Their prices are extremely fair - small coffee and a donut for $2? That's less than the price of a single coffee at the other 'big' chains. A medium coffee and a donut runs you around $3. Everything here is a great value. The only reason I'm not giving them five stars is because they run out of donuts pretty quick in the morning. I'm not an early riser, so when I stop by around 11:00, there's usually only a couple of trays of various donuts left. So apparently the service or lack there of you experience depends on the time of day. Go early in the morning and the service is impeccable. Go in the aftertaste noon and you may be subjected to a miserable woman with short blonde hair. The food is excellent! I've had an assortment of doughnut holes. Old fashioned glazed... 4.5, excellent, thick, good flavor Sour dough... 4.5, thick cake, good flavor Maple... 5, best maple I have had in a while, thick glaze, and the thicker glazed donut chaise works here Apple fritter... no rating, they forgot to put apple in ours and it wasn't fully cooked, but it looked delicious.
